Star Wars Advent Calendar Review: Day 3
Posted by CapnRex101,
The Sandcrawler scene in A New Hope is among the most memorable and one of the best known droids from that scene is the LIN Demolitionmech. This mine laying droid is seen being polished by the Jawas as Uncle Owen and Luke approach and has since become a fan favourite as a result of its unusual shape and warbling speech pattern, so it makes a welcome addition to this year's LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar!
This is the first appearance of the droid in an official set which is somewhat surprising given that two models of the Sandcrawler have been released since 2005. However, the dome shaped droid is not particularly easy to depict at minifigure scale and I suspect that has resulted in few designers wishing to take on the challenge.
Now that it has finally been attempted I think the designer has done an impressive job. The shape of the droid has been recreated fairly well in my opinion and it is easily recognisable if you are familiar with the source material. I should note that the arm is mounted in the wrong place and the size of the treads is exaggerated but I don't see how it could be improved upon without the release of a new element. The play value is limited at the moment unless you own 75059 Sandcrawler in which case this slots in nicely beside the other droids. I am sure this will be rectified shortly though as we are due for our first minifigure of the calendar.
Overall - 3.5 - A good representation of a difficult form and one which will hopefully improve as other models are revealed in the coming days which will increase the playability.

Cool.
Mine laying Droid, any Army builder will get an use of this little guy.
Theres a jawa on the box so hopefully that will come soon to go with it
If you put a 4x4 dish under the 3x3 dish it helps with the overall scale (and height) of the dome to the treads, but the larger dish covers the claw. I think using just the 3x3 dish is a decent compromise, because there is no great way to represent the claw arm in this scale. It's always interesting how the initial reaction to the pictures (from the toy shows) differs once you get a chance to actually build it.
I didn't know that droid in the film was called the LIN demolitionmech, but now that I know that this Lego version is meant to be that, I think its okay.
I have seen the OT a few times but never seen this droid until today, and later discovered where it come from. So I was totally blank of what this was. I thought of one of those small droids but it did not fit the size. :-)
I recognized it for what it was when I put it together, but it's a weird droid to translate into LEGO form. It's weirder still that it hasn't been created officially in LEGO before. Surely I thought there was already a piece that was a squat half-dome in black. This is a worthy effort of LEGO and its designers!
I've never seen this robot before. It IS Star-Wars-y, but I don't really care about it.
You may want to be careful where you leave this droid, you don't want sudden tiny explosions sending minifigure parts flying across the room.
I know this is an unrelated comment, but I do believe I found 76044-1: Clash of Heroes. Being associated with the Jawa Sandcrawler, then this droid is LIN-V8K.
A nice addition to 75059 and to be honest, you can never have enough droids.
Great and thanks for finally clearing up what it is meant to be. I just presumed it was from the new movies as I didn't recognise it. Here is an image of the droid in the movie: http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/galleries/2010/Review_JawaLINDroid/Review_JawaLINDroid_still.jpg
I just watched A New Hope the other night and I didn't recognize this. First time in years I haven't been able to figure out what a model was meant to be.
