Summer BIONICLE images released
Posted by TheBrickPal,
The Toys R Us website has now put up high-quality images of four out of the five new BIONICLE sets to be released in June. Oddly, the only one missing is 71315 Quake Beast. You can see all of them in the database!
I'm particularly fond of 71312 Ekimu the Mask Maker, to the right.
Read on after the break for product descriptions. Thanks to GK733 on Eurobricks for the find.

I keep putting off new Bionicle purchases, but Ekimu the Mask Maker may have just pushed me over the edge. He looks so epic.
Ekimu has got to be my favorite Bionicle that LEGO has released (excluding Star Wars). I just love translucent blue pieces.
I must be the only person who doesn't like Ekimu...
Also, the link to Lava Beast says 75098 instead of 71315. I take it you guys have Assault on Hoth on the brain?
^ Yes, I used that link from the review to use as the basis for linking Lava Beast. Forgot to change the set number in the appearing text. XP
I'm most excited for http://brickset.com/sets/71316-1/Umarak-the-Destroyer (great rendition of a bigger and more monstrous mutated version of http://brickset.com/sets/71310-1/Umarak-the-Hunter) and http://brickset.com/sets/71314-1/Storm-Beast (extremely creative function, build, and color scheme). I'm not totally wowed by the others but I'll probably end up picking them up since they're decent designs and (like most Bionicle sets) not very expensive.
It's cool that http://brickset.com/sets/71312-1/Ekimu-the-Mask-Maker has two gear functions (one in his shoulder and one in his waist), but it's kind of a shame he lost the shooter function in his hammer and the spinning function in his shield. Both of those feel kind of upgraded visually but downgraded functionally.
I kind of wonder what the story role of this version of Ekimu will be, since it's a pretty big transformation from last year's version in http://brickset.com/sets/70795-1/Mask-Maker-vs-Skull-Grinder. To be honest I kind of preferred Ekimu as a smaller mentor character, like the Turaga or Protectors, but depending on how this version is justified in the story I might warm up to it.
Holy moly! I made a couple MOCs with hands sort of similar to the ones on 71316, particularly the fingers!
Just my luck, the one I'm most interested in is the one missing :P
I can't find "more images" button on set pages here.
Also, there are no pictures of back of boxes of all five sets and no pictures at all of the quake beast on toys"r"us website, but I found them on pages of these sets on ukrainian internet shop "rozetka". And, what is the size of pictures, which where found on toys"r"us website?
Interesting to see that they are deviating from the "one type of action feature for each wave" design (eg rotating arms, rotating waists etc). Now its looking like the "punchable jaw mask pop-off function" will become the new action feature. (i have no idea how that would work out, looking forward for some videos)
Is it just me, or does this new wave of villains (excluding Ekimu) looks rather...simple in their construction methods? It reminds me a lot of the previous Bionicle theme (ie no gearbox in their chests, just a skeleton with armour stuck to it)
Visually they do look interesting and appealing, but as a FOL who loves play mechanisms, I cant help but feel disappointed.
@Omega X: To be honest, last summer's villain wave also had a very diverse set of action features. Skull Grinder had a standard rotating arm function, but Skull Warrior had that plus a shooter, Skull Slicer had FOUR rotating arms, Skull Basher had a custom Technic function that made his arms swing horizontally, and Skull Scorpio was completely non-humanoid, with a lunging tail function.
This year's Beasts may not all have standard gearboxes but they have some diverse and original functions themselves. Lava Beast is maybe the least impressive, with only spinning blades and the waist rotation from this winter's Toa. But Quake Beast uses one of last year's gearboxes SIDEWAYS to create one massive, horizontally-swinging arm with spinning club. And Storm Beast may look bony, but has the most complex function of all—two rotating arms that are driven not by a gear, but by the movement of the tail—lifting the tail swings both arms forward while swinging the tail side to side swings the arms in alternation.
^Fair enough... I have a fair number of G2 sets, so I might try my hand at MOCking up the functions.
Love Umarak, and the beasts. Eh on Ekimu.
@lyichir Ohh i see...erm i may have not been clear about my comment regarding the previous waves, i was intending to say that the previous waves of Bionicle have the same underlying mechanism, which Skull Warrior, Slicer and Grinder all share, abit with some modifications. But yes the Skull Basher and Skull Scorpio have pretty fascinating mechanisms, i have to agree =P
And about the current upcoming wave, wow! To be honest i really didnt spend much thought into the Storm Beast's function, and i am regretting doing so now. I was aware that there the arms are connected to the tail, but didnt realise that it was such a complex feature! I am impressed by the simplicity of it i will say =P Thanks for pointing it out! =D
Nice! I always loved last year's Toa Masters, the personality they have makes them timeless to me, and are perhaps my favorites of the whole line! When this year came around, though, I was less than impressed by the Uniters, loved the creatures, and LOVED Umarak. Now, while I think the beasts are cool (like the skull villains), I feel they may not be immediate buys on their own (like the skull villains). Ekimu looks quite nice, and might be my favorite of the 2016 Toa sets, but I still prefer Mini-kimu to this one. And then there's the Destroyer. What else can I say but that he looks PHENOMENAL :). I mean, he might be the most satisfying build of the Bionicle reboot so far! So, I'm pretty happy with this summer wave, at least for now. Thanks for posting this!
