75159 Death Star unveiled in brand store

While we wait for LEGO to officially announce 75159 The Death Star, we can now bring you pictures of the box courtesy of the Arundel Mills LEGO Store in Maryland in which it was being built in full public view yesterday.

At first glance it appears to be 99% identical to the old version which is a huge missed opportunity to produce something better. Of course 10188 Death Star is pretty much a perfect set anyway but in the 8 years since it was released, new parts and building techniques have surfaced which could have been leveraged to improve it.

Although it may well appeal to those that are still looking to buy a UCS Death Star, those that already have the old one, which surely must be a significant number by now, are unlikely to want this one as well.

What's different? There is plenty of discussion in the forum about what changes can be seen on the box but I think it mainly boils down to updated minifigs.

You can view full sized images of the box, the minifigs and, importantly, the box in its public setting, after the break.

By in Australia,

When I first saw this set, I was disappointed, but as I missed out on 10188, I'll probably snatch this up while I can. Too bad there's no interrogation droid though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What a huge disappointment, with the exception of the slightly updated minifigs I have no interest in this at all. I have the previous version and as stated above the main set looks like a reboxed version, could have at least improved the look, more rounded edges, smoother sides etc. Believe it has a hefty price tag as well, and looks like another profit over what people actually want to see. With this and UCS Hoth earlier in the year, two potentially great sets wasted, over priced and nothing new or exciting at all.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Really didn't like 10188, so I was really hopeful for this. Oh well, I didn't really have the money for it anyway. I dont think Lego Star Wars has produced a single good set this yeah.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Now I wish I'd bought the original when it was on clearance sale.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

OMG, what a wasted oportunity to do something great

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks for sharing. The old one was still selling when it was discontinued (from what I saw) so I'm happy for folks who still want one, who will now again be able to get it at a retail price. I'm waiting to see the actual final price though (not the rumors). I'm sure the months of work not invested in designing a brand new DS instead went towards many other sets that have already been released & enjoyed by many, or will be by the holidays, so it's just a trade-off.

Gravatar
By in Greece,

Take that, collectors! :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

This really aggrivates me. Why did they even bother to make a new one if it is the exact same as the old one. From what I can tell, even the figures don't seem different. Cmon LEGO! :/

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I just missed the older one, I mostly held out from buying it because of the old looking minifigs so I'll probably get this! Also the last one was also a rerelease anyway so is this a rererelease.

Gravatar
By in Czech Republic,

There is 2013 extra pieces somewhere in there :D

Well I don't understand it really. It really feels like some designer who was up to design new big set accidentaly wiped out his harddrive or something so they found this fix :) Honestly, if there would be an adept for the future UPDATED re-release, this death star certainly was it. But so soon? And NO real updates? Boo :(

Plus we can hardly expect any lower price (no design cost?! Lego...? :D) so it's still to expensive no-buy for me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Missed opportunity? Absolutely. Looking on the bright side, this is welcome for new buyers who previously missed that opportunity. If you already have it, be thankful you don't need to spend more money.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

That may be a very a diplomatic response @theJANG but well designed small sets will not satisfy UCS collectors and after many years of exceptional releases 2016 has been a huge fail and leave many of us wondering if 2015 was the last great year for UCS Star Wars sets. With the next planned set a re-released Snowspeeder I really hope this "months of work" saved this year have gone towards something mind blowing for this time next year.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It will be interesting how Lego market this when it is officially released.

And now they've done this they need to (re)release #10179 and give the majority of AFOL something they really want (and properly stuff it to the hoarders).

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

So the disappointing Star Wars year continues. Hoth is mostly a collection of existing sets, the blue/white X-wing is 95% just a recolour of last year's black and orange, and now this. Are they short on designers in Billund?

I can see the TIE has been redesigned but I do wonder where the 213 extra pieces are.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The biggest missed opportunity is not having any minifigs or play relating to Rogue One which seems to be the only real justification of bringing this set back so close to the movies release.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

That was disappointing.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Very disappointing - but at least it saves me some money. Why didn't they do a new version of Cloud City instead?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have always been toying with the idea of getting the DS, but have never been able to pull the trigger as I always have other things that I want to get.I was really excited about there being a new DS, but with this it is a hard pass.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'd been toying with getting the old version for about 4 years but have held off since the very first rumours of this remake appeared. Although I'd love something new, I'm also really happy that I've now got the chance to own this set with a fantastic selection of updated figures.

I know a lot of people who own the original are massively let down, but there are plenty of us who are pleased with this too. Also, if this set stays available for even half the amount of time as 10188, there will be a lot of kids and afols picking this up who would never otherwise have had the chance.

Ps. Love Han's hairpiece!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@CJ_Gamer There is still an interrogation droid (using an actual needle now). Good to see there are now 25 proper figures and no brick built ones included in that count.

I guess this re release was partly to jack up the price a bit, partly to add Disney branding and partly out of necessity due to retired molds (e.g. Chewie's head and Vader's helmet). Maybe that's why the tie fighter now looks worse - to make room for Vader's larger helmet.

Interested to see the UK price. It was originally one of the few sets that was cheaper in the UK than the US. Just worried if this anomaly is addressed as the US price has been jacked up by 20%. Lego could feasibly put the UK price up by at least 50-60%. Really hope they don't.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wow - that's disappointing - was hoping for something more akin to a 10143 for a UCS - this is just another play set - which is fine for what it is - but definitely not the UCS set I was expecting. Wish they would stop using the UCS name for these types of sets - really starting to move away from targeting the AFOL's, which in itself feels like a bit of a let down. I just cannot see how this compares to the UCS Tie Fighter or UCS Slave 1.

2016 is turning out to be a really sad year for Star Wars UCS. This is a definite no for me (I don't have the 10188 - as I found it a bit meh ). :(

Gravatar
By in Poland,

2016 - The year of horrible Exclusives

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What are the rumoured prices?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What if they re-released cafe corner?
Would you be happy then?
Im I kid and I want this set and do you know why? Because I want to play with it.
Like all Lego sets should be played with.
Just remember who Lego is targeting this at. Not adults, kids

Gravatar
By in Czech Republic,

James: only if released in accordance to today's standards - having proper interior :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Definitely a let down for majority of AFOLs and how come this set gets the UCS label whereas Ewok Village was called a regular one!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yep I agree. Lego mainly test sets with children and I expect they were very happy with this. The amount of money that is spent on children these days (I got £10 gifts in the early eighties) this will be a huge seller at Xmas. I've also been waiting for this but I think I'll pass and get the Disney castle instead. Glad they didn't release the other death star (big grey ball!!)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The only change is that the minifigures have been updated to newer style and some more pieces have been added to the Death Star. Big disappointment for me 2. I didn't get the old one but I would not buy this one either.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Are you sure this is correct and not someone just playing with the box and showing what they would like it to be? Previously Brickset, earlier this year you posted a note for new star wars sets with numbers and prices. The price for this was supposed to be around £100 so to make a UCS style set for that amount with Disney and Star Wars Licensing, really????!!!???. Besides isn't this supposed to be the Death Star from Rogue One or Star Killer Base from TFA. They have only just discontinued the original UCS Death Star and that was still a big seller and probably one of the longest UCS's to be on sale at nearly eight years. I hardly think this is true.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Oh look....another deathstar set. Guess the inspiration has gone into space at LEGO

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

That's really bad. They could have tried to make it closed, or smoother, these quadratic slopes still look awful. I didn't want to buy the old version and was really excited about this one, but now, as I see it, never gonna waste money on that crap.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Rumors are €500 which is insany and incredibly greedy

Gravatar
By in France,

What a joke lol
"What about remaking the same set but sayin' it's New ?"
Imagine a car seller doing the same....
All the people that already get this set, including me, will not buy this one.
All to economize even more on R&D. Price tag will probably be even more expensive at 450 €.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@theJANG I love that you've always got a bright side to everything while others are sulking and making demands, as if they're owed something.

Lego does what they do. If this was a bad move, their sales will reflect that and they won't do it again.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This set will work perfectly for Lego and will sell like hot cake before next xmas and the next couple of years.
Keep in mind that there are always growing new Lego fans (especially Kids) out there who are not familiar with the whole history of Lego sets. For them this DS is totally new and is an outstanding playset.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Despite all the naysayers here I have to think Lego has not really missed the mark. There are always Star Wars fans who will never have bought one yet or those that will actually buy the second so they have the updated figures and minor changes to the set. Of course there are always new fans as well and I very much doubt TLG will have misjudged the value in simply updating a few things. Yes perhaps disappointing to those long term collectors.

As a newer collector although not of Star Wars I wish they would do this with some of the Creator sets. Its seems to have happened with a few but I would love to see it happen with the Modular line. Now again this would upset and enrage many fans that have collected for years but would allow many of us new collectors a chance at something we have missed out on.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I'm going to be hyperbolic here, but that's got to be the most disappointing "new" set that LEGO has ever released. Certainly in their resurgent renaissance period of the last 5-10 years.

And call it what it is — a reissue — not a new set.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The problem is Lego is pretty much ignoring the cries for rerelases and is also giving their products a relatively short production cyclus. This set follows a production stop of 10188 rather quickly. Also it would have been nice if there were like a service kit to get your old 10188 up to date...

And I am bit of a hypocrit. I don't want a set I already own rereleased...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oops....someone at the Arundel Mills Lego store is getting fired...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well I have the last version 10188 which I do like. I was wondering why they would rerelease this set but I supose it's nice to get more updated figures in it but where are the extra 1200 bricks? I can't see it in the build so far, but we all know that the price will jump up now to about £350, I would think here in the UK. There are going to be a lot of pissed off buyers that have paid over the top prices on ebay for the old one not knowing there was a new one out soon!
Looking forward to the review but I wont be buying this version.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Um... what? The person who took the pictures? How can you be sure if they work there or not?

@djlegobear: It's most certainly not a fake... the build has a few subtle differences, especially the TIE, which you can see is ALREADY BUILT in that picture. Besides, this correlates with the other two leaks that surfaced last week of the exact same set. This sounds like a conspiracy theory...

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Well there goes an opportunity. I was hoping that this would be closer to the old UCS version of an enclosed Death Star. I have 0% interest in an open one. For the increased price over the 2008 edition, you'd think they would have wound a creative way to add paneling to it at least so it could be both an exterior and interior Death Star. Ugh. Pass.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a great disturbance in the force. It's as if millions of AFOLs suddenly cried out in terror...

Ever since this set was rumored, I have entertained the idea of a set similar to 10143. What a disappointment to see ANOTHER playset. LEGO certainly owes its adult community a spectacular display model in 2017.

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

Wow, yellow skinned minifigs?
I find it OK to exchange buildable droids and Dianoga for the imperial pilots and officers

Gravatar
By in United States,

I agree with both Down Under Bricks and Jang. I will pick up a copy of this set, sadly because I am a Lego addict. Lego always has me at hello. (That was a reference from the movie Jerry Maguire. LOL)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

dissapointment,
the only diffrences that I can see is han's new hair, the tie and the springloadedshooter exept of the cannon

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Not sure why there are so many complaints, it's pretty obvious (to me) that the aim of this re-release is purely to jack up the price.

Can't blame them, though, as they have to factor in the yearly inflation for the 8 years since original release. As they can't suddenly jack up the price on the same set, thus the new box printing and minor changes done.

10188 previously retailed here at S$900, which is about US$650 at current conversion rate. With the US price increase, I wonder will it hit beyond S$1000!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I understand why Lego did this, but literally the only interest I have in this is for Han's new hair.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

It looks almost the same as the old model (which was great for it's time) but it looks very old-school seen from a 2016 perspective. Although it looks brilliant, and for those (like me) who hasn't got the old one this is a must have, plus it comes with 23 "real" minifigs and 2 droids!!! Especially Han Solo looks impressive.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am so disappointed in this new Death Star. There really is nothing new about. Besides updating the minifigs this set isn't necessary. Lego could of done a better job and done something new. As I said, very disappointing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is the dianoga still in the set?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I... Don't see anything new... And if there is, it's hardly enough to merit a second purchase. (Even though I never bought the first one. Was never interested).
Honestly, I would probably would've been more accepting of this if they included an outer shell so you could have a proper sphere instead of the playset-y look it is now...

Gravatar
By in United States,

A new hair mold for Han!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I thought is would be more like 10143. I'm sure many thought that. Now that is going to go up in value even more.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I always thought lego said they don't rerelease products...and while it isn't an exact rerelease since there are mild changes, this trend had been going on for a while. (Ucs xwing, winter village toy shop, etc)..

The set looks fine, but so did the other one. And with this being more expensive, I definitely can't afford it since I couldn't afford the other one.

Lego has released way more $200 (even $300) sets in recent years than I ever would have expected.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not gonna lie I'm sort of glad this is a bit of a 'flop' because i really didn't have the money for both this and the Disney castle for my kids... problem solved!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is this some kind of sick joke?! I cannot believe they would rerealse the same set, and I find it sad, and feel they are trying to take advantage of collectors.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe they'll rerelease #10179 next year. And maybe they'll return with the black boxes like the X-Wing and Tie. As for this set, I don't have the older one and my son has already told he would like this set, said he'll even help save up the money for it, so perhaps I'll get it to go with his Hoth set, however not liking the $400-$500 price tag rumored..

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have mentioned my thoughts on Eurobricks a bit and I'll try and sum them up here.

Yes I agree this model is a bit of a lazy rehash. Despite that, I want it. When the original Death Star was released I could never have had the funds to acquire it. Now, the new Death Star gives me an opportunity to get a great set I missed out on.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

A dissapointment for many AFOL collector's and the investment hoarders, but I'm sure there are many children who wants this set. I'm still waiting for a remake of the Death Star 10143 ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Man, I was there yesterday but must have missed it.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

OK, this is the disappointment of the year for me lego-wise.
I didn't buy the old one cause I dont like it, this is exactly the same design, so it's a no for me again. Maybe I'll just go and buy the slave-I...

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Oh and I just noticed...judging from the scenes this is the first DS...what the hell is the emperor doing there????

Gravatar
By in United States,

If someone had a picture of the back of the box maybe we could see the entire thing and find something new. Right now not too impressed

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I never bought the previous set because I was waiting for the new one, and I gotta say i'm disappointed. Updated figures aren't enough to persuade me to buy one, and the price will be astronomical. I'll have to pass, and patiently wait for a good UCS set.

Gravatar
By in Montenegro,

If these pictures are true and genuine, I don't understand why people say that LEGO, and particularily this DS, are made vastly for children - as children would have argues and dislikes toward the hypotetical new design of the DS in advance?

It's not like kids would be disappointed by a newer version of the DS, especially when these kids don't have developed philosophies and nuances about their collecting preferences or such.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So they are just releasing the same set and increasing the price? This is ridiculous and frankly I don't like the pattern. However if it does lead to the release of Cafe Corner with an interior I might view this pattern more favorably.

I would have remodeled it, used new pieces for new details. Maybe even have new mini figures to tie into the new movie coming out. Really weird to me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hope to see a rerelease of 10030 or 10221 one day..

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes! Finally, my dream of owning the Death Star can become a reality!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This makes me so happy! I will have no need to go get a new one. The design of the 2008 model was so good I wondered how they would improve upon it. Turns out they most likely added stud shooter play features and updated the mini figs. I've been adding mini-figs to the thing since I got it, so I'm good.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm glad to have seen this article this morning, as I have been torn for the last couple weeks as to whether or not I a should open my sealed copy of 10188 or if I should resell it and use the money to buy 75159 in the hopes that LEGO has just been playing a large April Fools Day joke on us a couple months early! Looks like my life just got a whole lot easier! :p

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just goes to show ya' lego is a 7 year cycle, everything just comes back to pick up new customers for a seven year run. Who hangs on longer as a customer is just a bonus to them. If everything was bigger and better each time/year how would any new customers enter?

Gravatar
By in United States,

People would not be so upset if this hadn't been hyped up with rumors of a brand new UCS Death Star. If we had known from the start that this was just another updated re-release, people would not have cared. Personally I am a little dissapointed by how little is changed, but I think this is good for people who do not have the original and I think that the updated figures look pretty good. It is also a bit dissapointing that the UCS name is being used for another playset instead of a new model like all the old UCS sets.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This is incredibly disappointing, both for the fact that it's a glorified re-release and the fact that it doesn't present owners of the previous version with anything new to buy.

While there is a small pocket of the adult collector market that desires these old sets be remade, there's a larger portion -- the one that can actually put their money where there mouth is rather than drooling at pictures online -- that is being alienated. I bought the last Death Star, and if Lego wants to sell me another $500+ set, great, but it isn't going to be a re-release of something I already have. So, for every person that's excited by this set, there are ten more that have no reason to buy it. This all equates to a lost opportunity for Lego, in my opinion.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

One in the eye for hording resellers, good! Quicker the Lego resell bubble bursts the better. Especially as more and more people with zero interest in the stuff just try to cash in. This is great for me as I never got chance last time and I have no objections to occasional re-releases as long as there are original releases coming out to like the Disney castle.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If they're willing to rehash an old design , then hopefully they re-release the UCS Millenium Falcon... Never got a chance to get that one.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I like to think that TLG is alternating what kind of UCS sets they make each year. Last time we got two excellent display models, and this time we got two playsets. We already know that we are getting a UCS Snowspeeder next year. Perhaps we will get another display model along with it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I hadn't originally noticed that the dianoga looks like he's been scrapped in favor of just his eye stalk. Can't say I'll miss him too much. I always thought things like that are better when they remain mysterious rather than revealed in all the cross section books (for example). Philosophy will clip an angel's wings (to paraphrase Keats). Midichlorians anyone?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This is ridiculous!

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Please, don`t buy this and let TLG feel the "medicine" with "0" sets sold. Low demand and sale is the only language they understand.
There`s too many bad experiences with Lego lately..: No London bus in Europe, I ordered the castle for over a week and it`s still not even sent out and several other bad things over time making me think their success have gone over their head. I may stop spending 6000 USD a year on Lego and retur to a second darkage? Shame on TLG.

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

Even previous TIE was better

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I think the only thing that should bother us is the fact LEGO is still using the "only the best is good enough" slogan. Those principles died some time ago already.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Chilis_no, wow, $6000 a year? You spend that much on Lego and this is going to return you to the dark ages?...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Those AFOLS who buy LEGO sets like 10188 to keep sealed for re-sale at huge profit....

....giggle, chortle :-D

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't think this was made to make money off of those who already have this....I think it is just to update a popular set. Most of those updates it would seem are with minifigures....like the use of the Doctor Who/Peter Venkman hair Piece for Tarkin. Does anyone know which pieces they are using for Luke and Hans hair...its hard to tell from the pics, but looks much different than what they have been using so far.

Gravatar
By in United States,

WTF - yellow skin figures?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Jedijon: No, they're flesh-toned figs. it's just the lighting.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Has Lego lost their UCS creativity or what? If you're gonna re-release, at least re-release something good that's been retired for over a YEAR! Like many, I was REAALLLLY hoping for a new 10143. I'm sorry to say, but… the 75098 Hoth playset is better than this.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Thank god Lego for releasing this. I had feared it could actually be a DS set that interests me. Phew, so much for that. After all, my Lego funds are stretched thin enough as it is, and I still have several large sets on my wanted-list. This is a welcome breath of fresh air for me. I'll pass.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

@monkyby87 Yes, this among plenty of other dissapointing things/sets lately.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, can't believe all the comments on here.

Veteran AFOLs are going to be disappointed by this set, but as a new AFOL who only came out of my Dark Ages because of LEGO The Force Awakens sets, I'm ecstatic about this. I will be buying this on day 1 and I am so VERY happy that they've re-released it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm disappointed. When I read the email linking to this article I got excited that they would be making a Death Star model that looked like a Death Star. This play set is more of a skeleton and looks more like a round building without exterior walls. I hope one day they make one with external panels so it looks like a small moon, not a half-finished construction project.
