Ideas Showcase

Posted by ,

It has been a while since I last posted an article on LEGO Ideas. I have to thank Rock99rock for posting the last article on my behalf.

Rock99Rock has posted an article which outlined some new changes that affect Ideas submissions in their first 60 days: projects must get at least 100 supporters in two months or they will be withdrawn. I believe this change will be good for the Ideas concept; a preliminary target of two supporters per day or an early project expiry should help clean up the Ideas site.

There have also been some changes to how the filters and navigation works as well. I hope all these changes will draw disaffected followers back to the site and that LEGO Ideas becomes more popular.

With these comments in mind, here are eight LEGO Ideas projects that I would like to promote this week.

I encourage you to add your own comments to these choices and links to your favourite projects in the comments below.

Mako Shark

By Shark Builder

Over the last few years, new parts have been added to the LEGO system which help build curved, organic models.

As his name implies, Shark Builder has submitted several shark projects to Ideas. All of these projects have some interesting building techniques and they all capture the fierce sea predator look.

I selected the Mako project as "Mako" is a name that is derived from the Maori language of New Zealand.

This project has 249 supporters and with over 400 days to run.

Pop up Book

By JKBrickworks

I like the clever way in which JKBrickworks has made a LEGO pop-up book by incorporating hinge pieces and a catch.

There are several ways in which stories can come alive and the project offers a few suggested stories to pop-up.

This project has over 4000 supporters and more than 500 days to run. I am sure it will reach the 5000 supporter milestone and receive a further 182 days.

Jaguar E Type Roadster

By Ozzyeatingbats

LEGO have produced a few Creator style vehicles that are listed on Brickset with the tag 14 Wide Car.

The Jaguar E Type is an iconic car from the 1960s.

This is another Ideas project that attempts to capture the much curved look of the car that was dubbed "the most beautiful car ever made" by Enzo Ferrari when it was first released in 1961.

The Series 3 Roadster was released in 1971 and came with a massive 5.3lt V12 engine (326.1 ci).

Is there room for another Ideas vehicle after the recent release on 21307 Caterham Seven 602R?

This project has close to 1500 supporters with over 500 days to run.

Donut Shop – Modular City Store

By LUCIUS SWEET

While this is listed as a modular City store, it looks as if it could be a stand-alone building. It is also smaller than most modular buildings that appear in Ideas.

I like the pink candy-store look of this model and could see this appealing to a diverse range of LEGO fans.

The project has 360 supporters with just less than 400 days to run. I hope it achieves the 1000 supporters milestone soon.

Pete’s Dragon

By nunki-psi

Pete's Dragon is a movie that was released by Disney in August although this project is based on the original film released in 1977.

The original film combined live-action and animated content: Elliot the dragon was animated while all the other characters are played by real actors.

I am not sure whether the Disney IP will affect this project's popularity.

This project has 461 supporters but only 180 days remaining.

Dwarf Hamster

SarielPL

If you are a Technic aficionado, then it is quite likely that you will have viewed Sariel's YouTube reviews of LEGO sets and his MOCs.

Sariel's pet hamster features in all his video posts and here he has made a LEGO model for prosperity.

This is a creative LEGO model of a cute furry hamster.

This project has over 2000 supporters with just under a year to run.

Hugo Cabret?

By vedosololego

What appealed to me about this project was the fantastic steam-punk look to the model.

The project is based on the movie "Hugo", which was in turn based on the book "The invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick.

This model also uses those large 40-tooth gears from the original Technical sets of the 1970s.

This project has 840 supporters with 277 days to run. It should get past the 1000 supporter milestone.

LEGO Designer

By AWI2345

My final featured Ideas project is the LEGO Designer.

This small vignette has some features that remind me of my relationship with LEGO.

There is an AFOL designer working at a computer with a LEGO model on display, ready to be photographed for a review that will soon be posted online.

I just wish my LEGO studio was as tidy as the studio portrayed in this model!

There is also a 1x2 blue LEGO brick with an original LEGO System logo from the 1950s.

Of the eight projects that I have showcased today, this one has the least support: it has just over 100 supporters with 266 days to run.

So there you have it. Eight Ideas projects to consider. Please feel free to comment on these or add a link to your own favourites.

By in Belgium,

I used the old logo (1x4 brick) in my idea, but it was not accepted by the team. Wierd. Did they change the policy of the use of the LEGO logo?

By in Australia,

That Lego pop-up book is brilliant.

By in Canada,

The incredibly straight body line of the E Type pains me greatly.

By in United Kingdom,

The pop-up book is brilliant. When will TLG wake up and hire some of these guys? Pop-up book vs yet another helicopter anyone?

By in United Kingdom,

There have been suggestions in the past where I've thought "that would be cool, but it won't get accepted". Not this time though, I think any of these would have a solid chance of passing review. Great suggestions!

I love all but mine is so sweet, cute and 95% accurate to the DISNEY Jr. Show it was based on: MINNIE'S BOWTIQUE! It may have only 187 SUPPORT votes but with all your help it can go over the top! I have received wonderful comments! https://ideas.lego.com/projects/147115

^^ The AFOL Brick House ( https://ideas.lego.com/projects/154372 ) was one of the sets I looked at this week but I decided to promote the Donut Shop instead. I like the concept of the Brick House and could see this as a display cabinet at home or in an office. At 400 supporters with over 400 days to run, it has time to increase a following.

The Futuristic Security Force Speeder ( https://ideas.lego.com/projects/149380 ) is cute, but I think it will have trouble gathering support. It currently has only 65 supporters with a month to run.

^ Minnie Mouse Bowtique ( https://ideas.lego.com/projects/147115 ) has some loyal supporters with a lot of positive comments. I like the creative use of colours. It only has 187 supporters with just under a year to run. I will keep my eye on this one and see if the support level increases.

The Minas Tirith Battle ( https://ideas.lego.com/projects/140511 ) has a solid 1000+ supporters and more than 400 days to run. I am sure loyal LotR followers will get behind this project. The project also has a classic castle look to it which should bring in other fans.

The Android's Dungeon ( https://ideas.lego.com/projects/138888 ) is a great modular Simpson's building. As LEGO have already produced sets using this IP, I am not sure whether this project would ever be accepted.

It skirts close to the "Once we release a licensed product through LEGO Ideas, we won’t accept any more submissions based on that license" rule; although the existing Simpson's sets did not originate from Ideas. https://ideas.lego.com/guidelines

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The Bus ( https://ideas.lego.com/projects/82583 ) has a lot of work to do in the next 12 days. It MUST generate over 100 supporters per day in order to reach the 10K goal by mid October.

Thank You so much! Two of my projects in Your article, Hugo Cabret and the AFOL Brick House modular building.. I 'm really happy for that. And compliments for this space that puts some lights over beautiful models on Ideas. I really appreciate it.

Hi guys. Please check out my modular design and let me know what you think: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/141717 It's a modular courtroom with jail cells and I'm really keen for feedback. Thanks :)

I adore the pop-up book; I hope it succeeds.

Hmm. . .Been a while since I visited Ideas. I may take a visit soon

@Sky Pirate: That is an impressive modular court house! It looks as if it has the detail and playablity of a modular produced by LEGO. I am not sure whether LEGO would accept a modular building from ideas though. I may write an Ideas Showcase article focusing solely on modulars; if I do, yours will be included. This will be in a month or two though.

@ Speshy: I do like your creator-architecture style Adriatic Dream house.

@ Evil Twin: I always ensure that the link of the project creator takes people to the project page for that person. Quite a few Ideas submitters have multiple projects. I agree with you that all of Shark Builder's projects are worthy of a mention here.

Thanks FlagsNZ! I doubt anything will come of it but I love building modulars. I'm working on a new project at the moment and having great fun doing so :)
