Christmas Build-Up: Day 1

In October and November, shop.LEGO.com offered the free 40222 Christmas Build-Up set with qualifying purchases. Huw shared his initial thoughts on it when it was released; now on all twenty-four days until the holiday, I will be going in-depth with each of the individual models...

Note: Our articles about this Christmas Build-Up set will display an image of the model as the article image because they are *not* behind doors: once you have opened the set you can see all the models in the instructions, and once you have built Day 1's you will see Day 2's, and so on, so we do not consider them to be spoilers. We will, however, avoid spoilers on the actual Advent calendar ones.

We begin on December the 1st with a nice little sailboat model. Not sure how a sailboat has much to do with Christmas - not a good start in that regard. However, I am sure it is meant to be a toy sailboat for a small child to find under the tree and succeeds if you think of it that way. All of the important details are there: trans-blue windows, bridge deck for the captain, the sail itself and even the water supporting the boat!

Overall - 3.0 - A fine effort at this scale, even if its purpose is not too clear. Still, the best has yet to come!

Thanks to Huw for the photos here, and for all the ones that will follow.

By in Switzerland,

Could you please use something else than the build for the picture of this article, because I haven't opened the door yet and were a little bit spoiled when i look the news.
Thanks : )

@Josh._777 untick the Avent Countdown category in your news preferences to avoid spoilers ;)

@Josh_777, that's a common suggestion, it's said every year :^)
To you, and others who don't wish to be spoiled, your news feed can be customised so that the advent builds do not appear on the front page. All advent posts that reveal that days build use the "Advent Countdown" tag, which can be disabled from your personal settings- http://brickset.com/profile/newspreferences
However, one issue that still remains is the image of the daily set which appears on the Twitter feed...

By in United Kingdom,

These models are not behind doors! The Advent calendar ones will use a non-spolier image and won't be shown on social media until much later in the day, if at all.

By in United Kingdom,

They aren't behind doors, but they are still a surprise if you don't turn the page.

By in United Kingdom,

Yes but you have to be very careful to avoid it. In any case this set is not sold as a 'box of surprises'.

Just do what @BrickBob09 above says if it bothers you.

We have this conversation every year. This will be the first where we don't use the model image for the Advent calendar articles.

By in United States,

Maybe this is a nod to those of us in countries that celebrate St. Nicholas' birthday on Dec 6 (Dec 5 in the Netherlands). Sinterklaas travels from Spain in a boat, after all, this could be his boat.

I saw three ships come sailing in / On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day / I saw three ships come sailing in / On Christmas Day in the morning…

Perhaps a link?

All good ideas!

By in Netherlands,

is it 3.0 out 10 or 3.0 out 5

By in United States,

^ Out of 5. :-)

By in Belgium,

@flipus74 that's what we were thinking! Even though he comes in steamboat my son was convinced it was for Sinterklaas.

Wow, I think I actually like this better than the surprises in the themed Advent calendars! Maybe that's a strength of the build-up idea - you don't get to keep them all built at once, but each model can be a bit more sophisticated... I'm going to go and get ours now! :D

^^ That genuinely made me laugh out loud!

^^^ OK, next year we'll start in October!

^ LOL! You can't be serious, Huw! How about in June, before they even release? ;-)

You can roll your eyes and call it pedantry all you want, but the argument that the models aren't behind windows doesn't hold any water.

I dunno about you...but KNOWING the next day's model requires me to actually turn a page to see...makes it easy to avoid. That's my "door".

You're not compelled to rip every door open on day 1, are you? So whatever spoiler management you feel is appropriate elsewhere is equally so here.
