Unikitty TV series announced

Posted by ,

Just over a month after the original 'leak' in a Russian Cartoon Network sizzle reel, a Unikitty! animated series has been confirmed to be coming!

From Deadline:

As ruler of the kingdom, Unikitty has busy days full of royal responsibilities. Unikitty is most interested in making sure everyone is happy and ridding the kingdom of negativity, but don’t misunderstand her optimism – she is one kitty not to be crossed. While she may be full of boundless energy and creativity, Unikitty is a force to be reckoned with if anyone gets in the way of spreading her positive vibes, especially if anyone makes her little brother and best friend, Puppycorn, sad. Also living in the castle are Dr. Fox, the resident scientist, and Unikitty’s trusty bodyguard, Hawkodile. Through it all, Unikitty and her friends make sure that every day is the happiest and most creative ever.

The voice cast is led by Tara Strong (Teen Titans Go!) and Grey Griffin (Be Cool Scooby-Doo!) along with Kate Micucci (Be Cool Scooby-Doo!), Roger Craig Smith (Regular Show), Eric Bauza (The Adventures of Puss in Boots) and H. Michael Croner (Review).

The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Movie producers Dan Lin, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Roy Lee, Jill Wilfert executive produce with Sam Register (Teen Titans Go). Aaron Horvath (Teen Titans Go!) is supervising producer. Edward Skudder (Dick Figures) and Lynn Wang (Star vs. Forces of Evil) serve as producers.

A premiere date has yet to be announced.

What do you think? Do you think it will be a hit, or complete trash of a show? I'm curious to see what happens.

By in Belgium,

Will we be getting a lego toy line for this??

By in United States,

Oh... so this actually happening? ??

By in United States,

^ And you guys thought this was an April Fools' joke for the short time that my original article was up! ;-)

By in United States,

Looks interesting. I will make my judgement after I learn more, or after I watch an episode. It's too bad Alison Brie isn't named in the voice cast, so it leads me to believe she won't be voicing Unikitty.

By in United States,

As a huge Unikitty fan, this news has me super-excited! Although I am a touch disappointed that they didn't get Alison Brie to reprise her role as Unikitty. Luckily Tara Strong is a skilled enough voice actress that she can presumably get the voice close enough to the original.

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

we have to get a UniKitty dressed as Batman, as Vader, as Iron Man, etc!!!!!!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I fear for the worst! But then I suspect I'm also not the target group...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I worry this will be bad, but both Tara Strong and Kate Micucci are really amazing. Remains to be seen if they'll have to carry the show on their own, and if so, if they are able to do so.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Is this another one of those shows aimed at young girls but end up prominently watched by adult males? Creepy

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Argh! My eyes! I am actually losing my sight looking at that image! They'll NEVER get sets out of this. NEVER!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sounds weird.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

I'm not sure what to say, it doesn't look promising to me

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Ok I guess, nothing to crazy. I liked Unikitty in The Lego Movie. Also i hope for a lot of new Unikittys like OscarWRG said. Would maybe get a set if something comes out. It's not terrible but not awesome.

This might be the story of Unikitty before The Lego Movie?
Couse we got Ninjago, Batman and now Unikitty! I am hoping for something with Benny.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Also @Speed Champions fan, i think they will. This will probably not be something AFOL's would buy eccept those who like Unikitty. But it can be popular with kids.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

So excited! I love Unikitty, and she and her friends look adorable in this style! The premise sounds like a great setup for all kinds of fun stories. I hope there are sets to tie in with this!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm personally hoping for the best! Also, good to see another female-led show on Cartoon Network, there aren't that many. Great voice cast, too.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

They have a lot of great producers, wonder if the set will be great part pack.

Gravatar
By in United States,

No god! No god please no. NO! No...noooooooooooooooo!
Like someone mentioned before...another show aimed for kids and then it'll be creepy adults claiming it's a great show with inspiring themes...ughhhh.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

gonna copy+paste my comments from twitter about all this:

I'mma need a trailer before I can judge it properly. The pics we got looks pretty neat and stylised, so I'm pretty excited about that. Hopefully it ain't overly-stiff in motion or anythin'. The voicecast... is pretty solid, yeah. Kinda a shame we ain't getting Alison Brie back, but Tara's hella great so it don't matter too much.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller being on board is p good too, all I need now to be properly confident about this is a list o' writers. Good ones. Assign properly good writers to this and we should get somewhere, but if we get TTG or PPG'16 level stuff... yeah, no.

tl;dr: Please be good. PLEASE.

By in Japan,

It's surprising that in todays times this doesn't become webisodes online.
I'm definitely looking forward to possible sets, as I like whacky things in toys. The TV show I won't watch though, not too interested.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@legoDad42: And also obnoxious, small-minded cynics trying to spoil everyone's fun before an episode even airs, apparently…

Gravatar
By in Norway,

I WANT TO GET SETS OF THIS THEME SO BADLY

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hmmmm.... I really don't know. I really just don't know.

I am not sure if I am going to end up being surprised that I am actually enjoying this, laughing at how bad it is, or cringing through every painful second.

Here's hoping I will be pleasantly surprised!

By in United States,

I don't know how to describe this. It's probably going to be something like the Minions, a character everybody loves and then the companies will start to blow it out of proportion. The bird thing seems a little ridiculous, I would like that to be clear.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would describe my feelings about this endeavor as "morbidly curious."

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll add this to the list of cartoons I watch. Wait, I don't watch cartoons - never mind.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know a lot of people hate it, but Teen Titans Go! is actually pretty funny at times. Since it's partially made by its creators and Unikitty is voiced by the voice of Raven, I will give it a chance.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I just don't like it's not brick-stylised.

Gravatar
By in United States,

She was one of the funniest characters in The Lego Movie, so this is pretty cool! My daughter will likely want to check it out. What's with all the selfish man-children complaining about it?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The end has begun...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Tara Strong is an amazing actress, don't get me wrong, but she is used WAY too much these days.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The only thing I'm complaining about is that they're using the guy who made Dick Figures, even though I have nothing against the show and Mondo Media, it's just Dick Figures isn't for kids

Gravatar
By in United States,

To be totally honest, I really don't know about this. Unless, or rather until, I can find an episode on YouTube, my mind will be on the skeptical side. But the possibilities are quite indeed limitless. It could be a prequel to TLM or a sequel to help fill her story out until TLM2 releases. And if the latter is correct, I'd be quite interested to see these characters return in aforementioned movie. But... I still don't know about this...

Gravatar
By in United States,

To all those saying "this is awful!!! its the end of lego!!!", remember that there's a thing called children.

As for me, I'm not too interested in it, but it's an interesting premise.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

@Coson: too right. Reminds me of the Simpsons when Professor Frink plays with a toddler's toy and says the kid won't appreciate it on as many levels as he does.
I'd like to hear opinions on this show from kids and parents.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sorry BrickPal, still think it's an April Fools joke :D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hmm... Cartoon Network has changed a little since Dexter's Lab and Johnny Bravo - the days of yore. It's also interesting that this will be the first 'non-cgi' Lego based cartoon that I'm aware of in recent years, going for 2D instead.

I'm probably going too deep here but guessing that the aesthetic is quite a good fit with the potential ways the brand group intonated for taking brand Lego beyond the retail sets themselves. When you've started developing characters (and maybe stories) as engaging as Unikitty then it's a good idea to expand them, especially as there's such a big gap between 'regular' Lego Movies i.e. ones with Emmet et al in them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Something else that might sell me on this show is if the other TLM characters show up in little cameos. They don't even have to be played by the original actors! Anyway, still not really sold on the idea of this. But, I do understand that I am not TLG's target audience for this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Aanchir You know that's where it's headed. Just like My Little Pony. Even my 10 year old thought it was for little kids and then you know what happened to that. Go blank yourself.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sort of been pondering, I think the show's gonna be sort of like Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, where it's the "in series explanation" for a franchise, explaining why Unikitty exists in-universe in the LEGO Movie universe.

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

I know I'll eventually watch a few episodes on CN, but I won't get too attached to it. Except if there's sets, that would draw my attention some more. Luckily, it will be Mixels-like: all the characters, concepts, PIECES and overall fun of a Big Bang IP, but without all those pretensions and eventual disappointment.

And yeah, like @Brick_Knight said, the world could totally use something with Benny. Hopefully Benny and his siblings in an 80-something moonbase going on exciting space exploration, with a charming and kid-attracting audiovisual style that leaves room for nostalgic references.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I like it so far but I'd rather have a Benny show. I hope it'll have mixels-style sets.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I love Unikitty. I can't wait for it. I hope there will by sets.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

All I am going to say about this: thank you, I'll pass.

Gravatar
By in United States,

How do you give unikitty a show before Benny...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@legoDad44: Your ten-year-old was right. My Little Pony was, and IS, for little kids. Bronies who think that it exists for them or that they make up the majority of its audience are as delusional as AFOLs who think the same about LEGO. Of course, there's nothing wrong with liking something that's not aimed at you — if there were, then communities like Brickset probably wouldn't exist. For every dullard who thinks bronies are creeps for enjoying a kids' brand, I guarantee there's someone with the same clueless opinion of AFOLs.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

The unholy bastard child of The LEGO Movie, Teen Titans Go, and My Little Pony.

Gravatar
By in United States,

i very much believed that the first article describing such a horror was indeed an April fools joke. how unfortunate it will become a real show. Such a show will be a sin to humanity, and to the elder gods of mankind,

may Cthulhu smite those who will make such a heretical cartoon!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Aanchir...another of the clueless individuals.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@legoDad42: so are you basically saying "I DON'T LIKE THING SO NOBODY MY AGE CAN LIKE THING" because that's the general vibe I'm getting and it sounds hella dumb.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Ayliffe, no...my original statement was talking about the creepy nature of adults to a child's show meaning taking it to politely say 'adult' theme/obsession. I see it possibly headed this way towards this new cartoon. So you're off base on the hella dumb.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks interesting. I'm sure it will be comical enough. I don't have TV so I won't watch it, but the few snippets I've caught of Teen Titans Go were hilarious, so this might be worthwhile. It will be interesting to see if any sets come from it (since they have to promote it I'm sure). My daughter might like it since every other little girl seemed to like Unikitty. But I don't know what to make of the supporting cast. Unikitty worked great in the LEGO Movie, just like Batman did. But put them in their own movie and it doesn't always work out (I'm talking to Batman. His supporting cast made the movie worth watching. Too much arrogant Batman was not my cup of tea).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well this looks bad

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

How about a collectible minifigure series instead of a theme, would probably work better and we could get more variants of Unikitty, as well as the other characters :)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Slavomir: Tricky thing about that is that collectible minifigures usually only have one instruction manual for the whole series, and if these characters are any indication then only Unikitty and Puppycorn would have highly similar builds.
