Women of NASA

©2017 LEGO Group

We expected this to be under wraps for a week or two more but this morning the next LEGO Ideas set, 21312 Women of NASA, was revealed on the Ideas blog, perhaps done so early because certified stores in eastern Europe have started selling them already.

It'll be available in brand stores and shop.LEGO.com on 1st November for €24.99 / $24.99.

The blog also reveals that there'll be a pre-release signing event at the New York Flatiron store on Saturday, 28th October.

Maia Weinstock's original Ideas submission proposed the inclusion of Katherine Johnson, whose work was the subject of this year's Hidden Figures film. However she's not present in this set because, as a company spokeperson explained to Gizmodo, "In order for us to move forward with a partner we need to obtain approval from all key people, which was not possible in this case. We naturally fully respect this decision.".

View more images and the description after the break.

Follow in the footsteps of 4 pioneering women of NASA with this fun and inspiring LEGO set.

  • Build the Hubble Space Telescope and learn astronomy with the ‘Mother of Hubble’ Nancy Grace Roman.
  • Develop the software for space missions with computer scientist Margaret Hamilton.
  • Launch the space shuttle with Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, and Mae Jemison, the world’s first woman of color in space.

Build, play, learn and one day you too could become a science, technology, engineering or mathematics superstar!

By in Germany,

I will buy this for the mini shuttle alone..

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks neat!

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Love the set in general but a little sad they didnt find space (no pun intended) for Katherine G. Johnson. She was a key component in the calculations during the early years of the U.S. space program...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice set. Great price, too!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

So, we're back to Ideas sets with a more manageable size :) The telescope and shuttle look like fun mini-builds. I'll buy this, but I can't say I'm particularly thrilled.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No UK price?

Gravatar
By in France,

Looks very good actually, but the display stands make up half of the build ...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Did anyone notice how Lego excluded Katherine Johnson from the final set. Missed opportunity on Lego's part as they just made a movie about her earlier this year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ Might that be part of the reason? I wonder if any licensing issues arised due to Hidden Figures...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would like all Lego dresses to be done with dual-moulded legs now please. The crazy-tall slope piece's days are over!

Also that dustbin on the Hubble telescope makes me laugh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Here's hoping they stock this in greater quantities than they did the Research Institute set...

Gravatar
By in Australia,

At least it's an ideas set that won't cost three hundred dollars. And that space shuttle is ridiculously cute.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll download the instructions to build the shuttle. The rest, yawn...

Gravatar
By in United States,

There was an Ideas set that cost $300?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That's rather good! Hurting my pledge to stop buying every Ideas set though...

For the people saying it's a missed opportunity for Lego that Katherine Johnson isn't in the set, did you read the article? It seems that they couldn't get permission to include her. Not really Lego's fault!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@stet No, but buying both the Saturn V and Old Fishing Store will set you back nearly that much. ;-)

^ I think that statement was recently added in, so we couldn’t see it before.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Poor Margaret Hamilton, her build is nothing but a stack of books/papers and a drawing board. Her coat rack doesn't even have a lab jacket, hat or anything on it. I wish her drawing board had at least something strange looking like a Feynman-diagram (similar to what was used in TBBT).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feynman_diagram/media/File:Feynman-diagram-ee-scattering.png

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Really happy with the price. Makes it seem good value for money!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Considering the small size of the set, they couldn't have made the SRB's and external fuel tank just a little bit bigger? Looks like that will be the only thing I will change myself, otherwise this looks like an excellent build.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I rather have the female scientists set as it was a lot more creative, but maybe LEGO will make enough of these to sell it for more than 6 hours.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Best use ever of a dustbin ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice set and a terrific price. I'll be getting one for my son and maybe even one for myself.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the concept, and I really like the Hubble model and the orange and blue Shuttle minifigures. I'm not sure I like them to the tune of $25, but that's a fair price for the set.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

it looks very nice! I love the mini Hubble telescope, but that space shuttle has a comically undersized fuel tank

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

well that's...small. But I guess after a Saturn V, you can't go big again

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Definitely picking this up, if only to have more minifigs with real flesh tones to get terrorised in a Gotham City moc.

It looks like a fun set though so I will pick one up for my daughter to go with her Research Institute set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll likely be buying several copies of this set for myself and for gifts. :-)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Being a space geek I will certainly get this, especially as the price seems fairer than I had imagined. Originally there was a rumor of a 35 Euro price tag, which would have been ridiculous, but 25 Euro is really fair. Will go together nicely with my Saturn V
:-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Uk price?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hard pass

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Margaret Hamilton has the single greatest feet printing on a LEGO minifigure to date!

Gravatar
By in France,

How proud one must be when her or his idea and set goes through all Ideas steps and then she is officially released... Like a dream comes true I guess. Regarding all the projects which are submitted, it's a long way to see it on shelves. Good price for this one and, even if I'm not sure to buy it, it looks nice. GG Maia, super tribute to these women's work.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, while she's not in the set, there will at least be a set in the Katherine G Johnson Computational Research Facility at NASA Langley.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Impressive mini-models, but meh.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Very nice looking set, wich is affordable for everybody. Now fingers crossed it is available for the Lego fans in general. And not for the big re-sellers only.....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yet another PC stunt form LEGO *sigh* not surprising

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well they have successfully solved the issue of lots of people not really caring enough about a set with some female figs in a lot of people have never heard of by making it a set containing a mini Hubble and Shuttle!

Edit: Actually, probably not. I think I will just Bricklink the parts for the Hubble and the Shuttle on their own and build them instead. Sorry Lego.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Matgaret Hamilton's figure is so highly detailed, I love it! This set will look great with the NASA Apollo Saturn V!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Does NASA have a spot in the rest of the world's hearts like it does in America? I can't help thinking this set is kind of niche. I also feel it's a bit pandering especially after the scientists set--am I the only one?

That said, the models themselves are very nicely executed.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Useful new Flesh-Colored Minifigure faces. Nancy Grace Roman looks a little weird, though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@wizardry007 they couldn't secure permission from her or her family to use her image and likeness. So it's her own fault really

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bit of a meh set for me, I only liked Ideas when licensed themes we didn't expect were being made.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

I hope they produced many copies of this set, I'll get two the next time double VIP points are available.
There's several reasons this set appeals to me, but I'm not butthurt about supposed feminist conspiracies unlike some other people. If you're afraid of liberal feminism - which only seeks to increase opportunities and representation of women without addressing (and without aiming to fundamentally change) the actual societal and economic conditions that shape our world - and think it's some existential threat to the "Western way of life" or your own masculinity, you may either just be a sexist or you may not have any clue about emancipatory politics.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There's actually a reason LEGO didn't include Katherine Johnson. From the replies of the Facebook comments regarding this, LEGO Ideas said, "In order for us to move forward with a partner we need to obtain approval from all key people which was not possible in this case. We naturally fully respect this decision."

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is awesome. The Saturn V was WAAAAY out of my price range, but this is perfect. Maybe I'll buy an extra one and save it for my daughter when she's old enough to have her own sets, since I already have Friends and Disney Princess waiting for her.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Came to the comments to see if someone was crying "PC gone mad" or "eurgh! Another female set. That makes two!". Wasn't disappointed.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This set is destined to sell out long before double VIP points and free gifts come along. This set is pure marketing and hype serves that purpose well. It was even talked about on Dutch business radio just now. And that's just some small, local radio station on the global scale of things. So if you really want it, get it day 1 and don't be surprised if it is no longer available within a couple of days.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the way this turned out. Fun models! I agree with others; the printing on Margaret Hamilton's dual-molded legs looks great. Curious to see if this set is as criminally under-produced as the Saturn V (still "Temporarily out of stock" on the US LEGO shop site) and if the demand is such that it sells out quickly.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Those minifigures have amazing prints! I'm totally getting this set.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

I'll buy 2 for this price, one to build and 1 to keep boxed (for now :))

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh yes, immediate buy for me. Sad about the lack of Katherine Johnson (come on, she made up 1/2 of the women of color in the set, and TLG for some reason doesn't do much in terms of diversity), though understandable due to licensing concerns. And wow, those prints are great.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Why can't Lego just make an actual NASA theme already?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Well this is disappointing! With a title like 'Women of NASA revealed' I was expecting a swimsuit calendar or something.

Gravatar
By in Mexico,

@shaasa The build for Margaret Hamilton is inspired in a photo of her alongside the code she made for the Apollo program, so actually it is quite faithful to the source, including the marks on the board.

If you look up her name on Google photos you can see the picture yourself.

Gravatar
By in United States,

10029 is a great set. Still haven't parted that one out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

look at this feminist bull. so many other ones in that review period were sooo much better...too bad we got this ugly ass thing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^I get your upset but please keep Brickset family friendly. That means no swearing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it just me but does Nancy G Roman kinda look like the church lady from SNL

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nahhhhh man.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@me_simon I just hope that they got this upset when the Batman theme was originally announced years ago. After all, we'd already had a whole line of Spider-Man sets, and they decide to make ANOTHER line based on a man who's a superhero?

Anyway, this set looks really exciting! I love the added detail they gave to the mini builds.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

More PC garbage. There are plenty of male scientists who never get proper recognition for their work, but SJWs would have us believe it only happens to women.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was motivated to join in order to say how actively disappointed I am to see so many Brickset users complaining about this set on the basis that it contains women. Hardly "playing well".

I intend to get at least one copy of this set, probably more. I'm really amused by the inclusion of the garbage can in the Hubble mini-model, and the mini-Shuttle does a tremendous job in a small scale of accurately representing the structure of the STS and its mission modes. The SRBs and could only be bigger with different parts, and the use of 32034 is pretty neat. There's some nice parts usage. I just hope the nebula picture is printed and not a sticker, but I'll survive if it isn't.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Did anyone notice the new piece in the telescope (I think that's what it is)?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Did anyone notice the new piece in the telescope (I think that's what it is)?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Scrolled through all the comments so far and actually, one of my issues I have is not the women content - but with the marketing behind the set. It just seems to be pushing the educational element so blatantly - I think there could've been more refinement to focus on the (I must say!) nicely constructed mini builds or the real people as accurate minifigures than the excitement of 'developing software for space missions' etc. The educational element speaks for itself to some degree - all these individuals succeeded in their respective fields.

There's also the underlying feeling that this is just Research Institute "remastered" - I don't mind Lego promoting women in science as it's a worthy cause but I can understand why some people react badly when we essentially already had this set before, albeit without a license, and a skeleton instead of a space shuttle. Sorry this one's not for me - but I'll pounce on something original like the Fishing Store any day!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@ lego maker homeboy I believe that piece, though still very new, has been in a set or two already, like Ninjago City. So the excitement over it has happened already!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@The Rancor Yeah, it sucks when LEGO repeats themes. That explains the dearth of interest in an $800 Millennium Falcon.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huey1 Funny how "telling it like it is" seems prohibitive to actually reading what is there. The set is called "Women of NASA." Nowhere is it purported to be about under-recognized scientists. Even if it were ... out of the thousands of sets LEGO has ever done, it is beyond pathetic to complain that TWO are centered around women and science. And this is from Ideas, so if you would like to submit a set about under-recognized male scientists, you are free to do so. But you won't because you'd rather just complain that your gender is only getting 95% of the representation and not 99%. Grow up.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Oh no! It's politically correct! If girls play with this it will turn them into engineers. If boys play with it, they will think girls can be engineers! Help us, Lego!! Bring back Classic Space and Paradisa!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm glad to see that so many people are down on this set. My boys are already calculating how many times they'll need to mow the lawn in order to earn enough money to buy as many copies of the set as they need. The printing on the minifigs is the best of any NASA or City "fake NASA" set. To have both a very accurate space shuttle flight suit and the blue coverall uniform in the same set is incredible. My non-space geek son was immediately attracted to the legalized version of the most famous Hubble image. Two thumbs up from this household!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm a man, and I'm not gonna get butt-hurt about this set. Phew. But yea, a follow-up set with maybe a more gender-neutral vibe too it would be cool. Like to get the Apollo 11 crew in minifig form would be nice. Maybe they could just do a CM Series or somethin. I would totally buy that.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

1. I really like this set. It looks like a sharp build, and the fact that it's something different and interesting for less than $200 is a good thing.

2. It is a good set to serve as role models for girls, and is a great example that you can be cool and successful without having to be 'cute' or 'sexy'.

3. To the naysayers, I don't disagree either. We are living in a PC world where certain narratives are pushed even if they don't actually match reality, and it's cool to 'virtual signal' and show the world just how 'progressive' you are.

4. I'm just looking forward to a time, which will probably never come, when the colour of one's skin and/or gender specific body parts are no longer the defining characteristics of an individual. Where LEGO or any company can make all dude sets or all girl sets, or mixed, or whatever, and no one cares because it's a free world and there are choices for all to make, buy, or sell what they want.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah, LEGO is virtue signalling....... all the way to the bank lol. No matter how many men ages 18-49 crawl out and whine about ""PC culture"" and "AGAIN WITH THE WOMEN??", this set is likely going to get a bunch of press and be a hit across enough of the other existing demographics to more than make up for the dollars they weren't going to spend anyway. And if it's not? It's a single set out of literally thousands, it's not like they're going to fire dozens of employees if it fails. WORST case scenario, it shows girls and women in/going into STEM fields that they are worth celebrating via the most popular small plastic toy brand on the planet.

So glad this set is finally being released, just in time to start my holiday shopping. I'll be visiting NYC when the set designer is doing a signing at the Flatiron store, so I will definitely be picking up a couple of signed copies for myself and my girlfriend (plus the other progressive attention-seeking SJWs in my life.)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll definitely be getting this set, maybe a couple. I don't relate to the statements by some of the dudes about this being PC and complaining about women scientists, astronauts, and computer engineers getting some attention. I'm not seeing how this hurts anyone. These are fields that have primarily employed men in the past, and everyone who hasn't spent their entire life living under a rock should understand that girls and women have gotten messages for centuries that these fields are not for them - and there's no rational or valid basis for those messages. So, beyond being an awesome set (that's going to sell really well and make TLG a lot of $$$), this can serve as one small addition towards helping to send a better message to women and girls that they are welcome in these pursuits. Bravo, TLG!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Given the Toys'R'Us 4 figure sets are $20 for 4 minifigs, I see this as great value! I actually like the stands they have produced, although they prob account for a great chunk of the part count! As a father with daughters, bravo Lego! The telescope build looks great, and the minifig printing...shoe buckles printed! I'll be picking up one or two of these.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Other than not being able to include Katherine Johnson (too bad, but understandable and they obviously did try) I think this version is considerably more attractive than the original Ideas set. I think it's great for a whole bunch of reasons (price, size, quality, relationship to earlier Ideas sets, etc etc) and it's gone from being a "maybe" to a very definite "Yes!" on my want list. Well done TLG!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ TheAuk, completely agree. Especially with .4 it should not be made a PC situation regarding the gender or race of the mini figures included and it certainly shouldn’t be the focus or the defining reason to market the set. I feel that the research institute was great for demonstrating this point and should have been used as a precursor for the future of any set. This applies in general society also and not just LEGO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a good set, but they should of provided more in the builds.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It is really bizarre that the characters in this set are minifigs instead of minidolls. Lego knows that girls don't like playing with minifigs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, expensive! Good thing its a bunch of trash!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm hopping on the bandwagon of those wanting this set and hoping that LEGO produces more than their usual two dozen, which sell out in fifteen seconds flat, then cost 4x retail on eBay or Bricklink. This would look nice beside Saturn V, if LEGO ever gives me a real chance to buy it...

PS. Mixed feelings about Mararet Hamilton's dress, it's a nice print on both torso and legs, but sort of reminds me of a 1920's bathing suit.

PSS. Now that you've added the ability to "Like" a Comment, after reading some of the above posts I think it would be helpful to add a "Dislike" Comment option as well.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

29 CHF for 231 pieces. ugly minifigs, nice mini-models.........and the controversy around it

I furthermore do not like statements like this: The world’s first woman of color in space...............

If Lego enters politics, I will have to vote for Legoexit.....

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@davidzeman: what’s political about praising someone for a historic first? Besides that there were real political pressures keeping that from happening SOONER and she was the first to overcome them, because that honestly makes her achievement more impressive, not less. Perhaps in Switzerland it’s not as apparent how pervasive racism and sexism have been in American history, but people worked hard to break those barriers and it’s important for kids to learn and remember that so they can better understand the inequalities that are still being fought.

Not sure what’s ugly about the minifigures, either. They are basically the real people translated to minifigure design language. And assuming you don’t hate all minifigures, the only reason I can think that these would be ugly is if you think that about the people… which is a kind of nauseating opinion to express.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Well Aanchir your whole statement is political for example and sort of patronizing. You even go so far that you make assumption about what I think and condemn it. This is political demagogy......... Lego is about kids play and hobby for some adults. Political crap, patronizing, demagogy - please no more......

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

On sale in Toys r us today £19.99

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Almost 100 comments strong and hell hath no fury like AFOLs arguing over whether something is PC or not PC - surely all this angst could be directed elsewhere? Like scalpers ;)

Someone however did call me earlier on being somewhat of a hypocrite for liking the Star Wars theme but commenting about the appearance of 'repeating' the research institute. This opinion came from the fact that the Ideas platform specifically should always be pushing the envelope for new sets - it's inherently part of the concept. I wouldn't say re-runs of City and Star Wars sets fall under that same remit.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Behold gender equality: girls get something made to be exclusive to them. logic

Gravatar
By in United States,

@davidzeman
I totally agree with you. Like the concept or not, this is certainly an agenda and we don't need that in a kids' toy!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Boredom Surpreme

More like behold gender inequality: women get systemically shunned from and minimized in fields like science, and even when they do succeed in those fields their accomplishments often get minimized or a man takes credit for it. Recognizing that women as a whole are not only underrepresented in the field, but also those who are in the field are often made less visible, it only makes sense to celebrate their achievements especially, until they are no longer shunned from and minimized in the field.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^i just think that in LEGO specifically there should just be equality in everything. I don’t feel that there’s a need for women to get something special to make up for the past exclusion, but that’s just my opinion.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Boredom Supreme
Have you also been upset about Lego sets that only feature men? Or do you not really mean it when you say there should be equality in everything?

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

As somebody notified me in another forum - my comment above is too brief to be understood.

I do not find the minifigures in this set really as nice as they could be (ugly is not the right word - I meant not nice). One of them reminds me of grandma from minifigure series, just without basket and cat. The orange black reminds me of NBA players from lego sports, one is wearing some potato sack, the blue one is actually nice. I comment on the minifigures only, not the real ladies of course.

Two of the ladies are astronauts - astronaut is for me a combination of superintelligent scientist with physical capabilities of super-athlete. They have to be the best of the best. Now - one of the ladies is labelled on the box of this lego set as the first women of color in space, here I stop because the politics would start.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@davidzeman
...What do you personal feelings have to do with the fact that those women, in real life, are legitimately astronauts? Do you think they got in to """""tick diversity boxes""""" or something?? No, they got in because they were, as you suggested, some of the best of the best. Or were you still commenting on just the minifigs? In which case, what relevance does that have to the minifigs?

Also, don't blame LEGO for basing their minifigs off outfits they wore in real life. They may seem boring to you, but other people will be very glad to have minifig representations of people who have made important contributions to NASA and to science.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

These look better than expected and while I am still mad that some entries did not make it I am loving this vignette set (like the Research Institute set), that price is astronomical but due to the Nasa logo it may fit right.
