60 years of the LEGO Brick set revealed
Posted by Huw,
2018 is the 60th anniversary of the filing of the LEGO brick patent and it looks as if the company has some goodies in store for us.
The January US store calendar (which we can't link to at the moment) reveals a set called '60 years of the LEGO Brick' which will be free with purchases over $125 that month.
It contains micro versions of four classic sets from the 1970s and 1980s, one from each of its evergreen themes: Town, Castle, Pirates and Space: 6399 Airport Shuttle, 375 Castle, 6285 Black Seas Barracuda and 928 Space Cruiser And Moonbase.
Even from this low-res picture, it looks fantastic, doesn't it!
Thanks to Marco for the news.

Much better than that theme we're getting for the milestone!
@Huw, as it's the US calendar, it's $125, not £125, right?
But yes, it looks marvelous :)
It looks great! If only there was something else interesting that was on that store calendar... hmmm...
I wonder how fast this is gonna sell out. I'll be purchasing the Downtown Diner day 1 on Jan 1 anyways.
Nice! Looks similar in nature to the set included in the Great Lego Sets book.
Are we ever going to get more mini modulars in the vain of 10230? Its been over 5 years now and the 10th anniversary of the theme has come and gone.
Perfect way to celebrate the 60th. Hopefully they have many celebratory sets throughout the year.
Now if they were to reissue the originals...
All good news! Yet, the fact that there is the January calendar out there, and Brickset is able to post picture of the 60th anniversary, but none of the new modular is ridiculous.
@Huw when does the embargo lift for the 2018 modular? I've seen it all over fan cites and you tube.
This is really exciting - great sets to do micro-build of. :) And free with $125 purchase, certainly a surprise too!
Yihaa!
This is excellent. I am hoping the Mack truck is available in the US in time for this (many of the larger 2017 H1 Technic sets weren't available until H2, for some reason).
I just don't like how it comes out in Januari, the only sets I already know i'm going to buy (Fallen Kingdom and Infinity War) come out a few months later. Though I really do want it i'm not spending 125$ on sets I don't really want/need.
Edit:
Seeing as this is an 60 YEAR CELEBRATION SET it really should be available the entire year but that may just be my opinion
I'll definately have to pick this up with the Diner. Sadly I only have the original Black Seas Barracuda, and also wish LEGO would re-issue the others, to display them with. Also even though these are low res pics it looks like there's a fair amount of detailing, which means a charitable amount of pieces for a free set!
Me wantee. :D
Looks wonderful! Good thing I'll be at the LEGO store when it opens January 1!
Yes, I missed the opportunity to acquire a tote bag this year but boy this I will get.
Sigh. I feel like I'm spamming by wishing that they would bring classic castle and classic space back. But honestly, I wish they would. Even if it was 4 sets a year.
i would love to get a re-release of the yellow castle!
I have all the original sets and they are all great sets! I am surprised they included the monorail, as it is a cool set, but wasn't that popular. I am guessing it is iconic in many ways.
So cool!! Man, what to spend $125 on! This is aimed squarely at my demographic--I grew up with classic space, my all-time favorite theme!
@Guyon2002 I may just buy something I know I can immediately flip, like the new Diner. Even if I take a few dollars loss on it, it's essentially a very cheap, very cool set.
Maybe a chance to re-release some of best selling products of all time.
Possibly more exciting than the modular reveal! what a fantastic display piece to celebrate the classic era of Lego. It's a small phot but all four builds look nicely detailed and well displayed. Really hope we get the same offer in the UK as this will make the Diner a must have purchase in January.
I feel like I must be reading that wrong. It has over 400 pieces? That's a generous number for a free with purchase set.
Very cool!
Hopefully available in the UK at the same stage. Looks great as a freebie. Here’s hoping for some re-releases of such sets next year online with the 60 anniversary
Looks like a kinda similar setup to the 50 Years on Track set they did for LEGO employees. If so I might find a few things to buy.
Nice! Gotta order the new modular in January then :)
It all sounds really cool, only I wish there was a higher resolution picture.
If there any good Star Wars sets by then for $125 I might go for it. Although I think they'll come out a little late, so I hope this set will be available throughout the rest of 2018 too.
Splendid idea and execution, I wish it was sold separately.
I will definitely be buying the $125 worth of LEGO to get this set! Check out my LEGO Ideas project (submitted a few years ago, so expired now) for a similar notion: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/a87febc8-0ac2-4f09-9259-0589dde888e3 .
Very cute little representations of obvious masterpieces and deep plunge in childhood and a bit of nostalgie... I like it, I had three of them when I was a kid, Yellow castle is still at home, parted but almost complete and bricks used by my daughter for her MOC's... All the minifigs are intact and complete but for a few stickers, waiting for the moment I will take time to find the building instructions and check what is missing (a little BrickLink order I think). Good idea, GG and thanks Lego.
Oo-la-la, I'm liking this!
This brings on waves of nostalgia, growing up I was very fortunate to have the castle, the pirate ship and the space cruiser (with its fabulous lunar baseplate) but unlike Brick't et al I don't have them now. It's lovely to see them in micro and +1 to them being really re-released, in however a limited fashion (but don't see that happening) but will look out for this in January. Lego definitely knows it AFOLs!
I wish LEGO did the same with the 50 years of Train set that LEGO employees got last year.
This is a definite 'purchase'! I will happily shell out $125 of my limited budget to ensure picking one up. I absolutely love last years 50 Years on Track set the employees got as the Christmas gift, and this is a perfect companion!!!
I wonder if i using VIP points to purchase something will disqualify me from getting the 60th anniversary set, even though the model would be worth more than $125
So I guess here in UK it will be an add-on while spending £100 in LEGO shop then? Definetely something to have!
