Star Wars Advent Calendar: Day 17

Posted by ,

Our first model from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Director Krennic's Delta-class T-3c shuttle, was revealed yesterday. Presumably we will see a selection of further gifts based on the movie over the next few days as we get closer to Christmas.

Imperial Officers are ubiquitous throughout Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the entire Original Trilogy but have appeared in relatively few LEGO sets. This minifigure is therefore very satisfying and I think the graphic designer has done an excellent job, including a dark bluish grey kepi which is printed with an officer's disc as well as metallic silver code cylinders in the breast pockets on the front of the torso.

Furthermore, I was very surprised to discover that the officer's torso is brand new, featuring a unique insignia which denotes the rank of an admiral, a commodore or a commander in the Imperial Navy but a colonel in the army. One wonders why this subtle change was made as it does not feel entirely necessary but I am certainly glad that it was, just for the sake of some additional variety.

The printing on the back of the torso has also been updated with some creases but the legs and head remain the same as usual. I think dual-moulded legs could have been used to represent black boots and a new head would have been great, although I like the sneering expression and reddish brown sideburns on this one. A standard blaster pistol completes the figure perfectly.

Overall - 5.0 - Imperial Officers are fairly rare and are often restricted to more expensive sets so I am very pleased with this minifigure, particularly as he is wearing a new rank indicator!

A good figure, maybe the calendar's best so far. The face is indeed perfect Imperial Officer.

I really hope Star Wars can get dual moulding at some point. So many figures would benefit from it, but Lego seems unwilling.

I want the calendar just for this figure.

THIS!! This is why I get these calendars! I desperatley needed some heavy brass for my Imperial forces. Definitely a 5.0. It would get a 5.5 IMHO if he was a named Officer.

I thought 4 red, 4 blue and 2 code cylinders denoted a Commodore. Of course, if you're doing a ROTJ MOC, they should all have exactly the same insignia anyway!

I missed out on the calendar this year but may buy it at a discount after Christmas.

I am extremely happy with this figure. Definitely a 5 rating! It's only my 2nd Imperial officer. Lol. Love the torso, head, and I'm pleased he comes with a blaster.

By in Germany,

I think you don't get the inside joke, Lego makes here. Our imperial officer started out in 2016 as Captain (3red/3blue/1Cylinder) aboard an Imperial Star Destroyer, was then demoted to some Operations/Crewman rank (3red/3yellow/no cylinders) working on the first Deathstar, but then he made it back to the top ranks in 2017 as Commodore of the Imperial Navy (4red/4blue/2Cylinders). I guess he was one of the few, who survived the destruction of the first deathstar, so was promoted back up the ladder... :D

There is little consensus between sources where Imperial ranks are concerned. However, according to The Essential Guide to Warfare, the closest to a canon source that I could find, four red and four blue squares with two code cylinders denote an admiral, a commodore or a commander in the Imperial navy and a colonel in the Imperial army.

However, as @Richpepperell mentions, there is almost no consistency from one film to the next so making an accurate assessment is impossible.

I'll just use this fig as additional crew for my Death Star.

The cap isn't a kepi—it doesn't have a flat top—it is just a kind of military field cap.

@quixotequest - You are absolutely right but the term 'kepi' is used to describe Imperial Officer command caps in Star Wars reference materials, hence it has been used here.

The 70's sideburns are just terrific.

By in Australia,

Shame the rank would be wrong but the face looks like Cassio Tagge.

By in Luxembourg,

I agree the sideburns are magnificent.

By in United Kingdom,

The rank on the uniform doesn't match but the head print reminds me of General Tagge.

Stoked for exclusives! At first, I thought it was the same, from the updated Death Star...but it's an exclusive (for now). Excited!

I really wish Lego would make tons more of Imperial Officers, with different heads. I never got this figure from before so I am really glad to have him, but I wish they would make other specific officers. This is a great 5 as well!
