Review: HispaBrick 10th Anniversary set
Posted by Huw,
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the magazine a special custom set has been produced: 1001 Magazine Kiosk.
Limited to just 50 copies, it's been given to those who have been involved with the magazine over the years so I am very honoured to have received one given my own humble contribution has been merely to help promote it.
Packaging and contents
It comes in a full colour box showing the set on the front, and parts list on the back.
Parts are packed in a zip-lock bag and have been hand-picked. They were all present and correct in my copy.
There's also a sticker sheet with miniature versions of all 49 magazine covers. A couple of 2x3 tiles are provided to which you can attach two of them should you wish.
Printed instructions are not included; instead they are printed in issue 30, along with a lot of information about the design and production of the set.
The completed model
The model consists of two parts: the magazine kiosk and a rent-a-bike stand like that you see in many cities nowadays.
There are three minifigures in the box including one with a custom printed torso showing the magazine's logo.
The bike rack looks great and I particularly like the way the bikes are connected to it using the stud at the front where you'd usually add a trans clear tile for the front light.
The kiosk, complete with custom-printed tile showing the magazine logo, occupies 8x8 studs and has a pavement in front and vending machine at the side. It's not usual to see such things on the street in the UK but I know they are commomplace in mainland Europe.
It's fully enclosed, with a door at the back.
Inside there are a number of cool details, including a coffee machine.
The cover of issue one of the magazine has been printed onto a 2x3 tile and positioned outside to represent a magazine rack.
Verdict
It's a well designed and great-looking model and, as I say, I am honoured to have received it. It will take pride of place in my display cabinet.
If you want to own one yourself, like the magazine's Facebook page where I believe there will be competitions or something in the coming days.
In addition, I'm told that will be one set in auction at the Kobe Fan Weekend in Japan, another one at Skaerbaek Fan Weekend, and one will be sold on Catawiki to raise funds for the Magazine.
Thanks to Lluis for sending me the set. It's been an honour to have helped in a small way and I hope to continue to do so in the future.

Why are the best sets always these limited edition special releases and only 10 of them exist?
This could easliy be a retail set
I like it. Nice design, cool add to any city display I think. And IMO if someone deserves such a gift it's you Huw - let's say Brickset. Even if you think your contribution to promote this magazine as humble, you do so much for all of us Lego fans, and for those who try (each one his own way and medium, from most humble to biggest websites or YouTube channels) to promote Lego that I sincerely think that this gift was not wrong given.
"I particularly like the way the bikes are connected to it using the stud at the front where you'd usually add a trans clear tile for the front light."
I'll second that. I got to the photo before reading Huw's comment and thought the same thing. Neat! I'll steal, er, borrow that idea some time :)
@CCC there are a few specially printed parts in this set, so you wouldn't be able to build it exactly the same. You could order custom printed parts to make up for it though, but that might not be acceptable to LEGO purists.
This is a very nice build and I'm that the parts and instruction are being shared in a free-to-download magazine.
And I think purists will find printed parts of their choice to create their own little stores.
That's an awesome little set & I like the sticker sheet (for a change) with all the magazine covers.
I'd be tempted to display one each week of the year - just need a few more
For some reason I wasn’t expecting to see the Lego logo on the studs, but you can see them in the 8th picture. Interesting.
Given the context, I would've expected the design of the kiosk or the street to be a bit more hispanic-inspired, but it's a very well-crafted model overall. I especially love the roof and the bike rack.
@AgentR2 Why?
I love this! Is the vending machine supposed to be a Redbox?
@Librarian1976 As I explain in the article, it is a red vending machine, only because red parts are some of the most common ones. So when ordering the parts, it was easier that they were available. No relationship with any brand (nor cola drinks one :D )
@AgentR2, I didn't mention that the sets contains genuine LEGO pieces, I had assumed that it was obvious.
Lego could make something similar for $14.99 or $19.99 and it has thr big bonus of actually being a fully enclosed building. I love it! ¡Me encanta!
Nice sticker sheet.
I like the roof, made of panelled window pieces. Are they attached or do they just sit in place, nestled around the jumper studs?
What a great design.
Looking forward to building this, this weekend.
That bike rack is pretty technical, but fantastic design, I really like it. As is the rental box next to the kiosk.
@legodad1 just sit in place, and with the help of the studs, it has a fixed position. Of course it is a forbidden building technique in LEGO, but the result looks beautiful. That's why I used it.
@lluisgib will you be making the sticker sheet available separately for those of us wishing to bricklink our own and display with Hispabrick covers?
Wonderful tribute and build! Congratulations on 10 years!
@darkstonegrey Unfortunately we don't have capacity to manufactur and distribute more sticker sheets, nor printed parts. Furthermore, they are part of the undesired "exclusivity" of the set. We wanted to do more sets, but as you probably know, we are a free Magazine without advertisement. We don't have budget for things like this, and we had to do a big effort to produce that 50 copies.
Anyway, I am thinking to distribute a file that allow AFOLs to print their own stickers. I will try to do it this weekend.
Thanks for your interest and for your greeting message :)
