First sighting of Galaxy Squad?
Posted by Huw,
Murphquake has just posted this picture, from the latest Club Magazine, of what could well be our first glimpse of what 2013's Galaxy Squad sets might look like.
They look like an updated version of 1998's Insectoids, which is no bad thing, and interesting because I believe Mads Nipper, Executive VP Market & Products, LEGO Group, said at AFOLCON that his favourite LEGO theme was Insectoids :-)
I certainly like what I see, it has a lot of potential, and if LEGO_Nabii has been involved they are bound to be great!

"Yar's Revenge!!" =)
Looks cool... and yes, the orange text-box in the lower right panel says "Galaxy Squad"
Yes! Want!
Can't wait to see pictures of the sets!
Reminds me of Galaga. Getting pretty pumped for this!
I love The LEGO Group's space themes but honestly, I also think they over do it. I mean really, do we need a new space theme every year? At least keep the theme longer! This looks like it has potential but so did all the others and they didn't stay for long. Hopefully we will see some more effort put into this.
Looking good. I think it will be this, Superheroes, Ninjago and maybe a few Chima sets for me next year.
^
This year we had a nice refresher from all of the space sets released in the years before. It really isn't a big deal but it would be nice to see LEGO put some effort into other themes such as western or possibly a old time detective theme.
The color scheme is very welcomed to my LEGO collection, especially any dark red pieces. I wonder what the opposing side will have to offer?
Lets see, giamt bugs are promissing, however, I am much more curious about the galaxy squad vehicles itself.
Trans red canopies again? That will be popular. Hoping those alien insect figs are like the twitch fig from TS with the antenna and all. Looks like wings on a neck bracket too. Lovely, now let's see the (no doubt) human good guys, their ships and so on!
That alien ship looks brilliant and the Minifigures are even better! If this is indeed Galaxy Squad it will be a must have for me! I agree with ChicoCheco however, I am more interested in the Galaxy Squad vehicles.
The only issue I see here is that I feel very sorry for is the creator of the Space Marines on Cuusoo, his idea has been gathering supporters for a whole year and now it is almost certainly doomed to rejection with this theme about to be revealed. Why they ever discontinued Alien Conquest is beyond me, it was popular and there was plenty more they could have done, but Lego chose to end it! Why?
I like where this theme is going. It might be the only lego theme I buy this year. That set reminds me of a starcraft mutalisk or this older set http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=4774-1 .
This theme will probably be very popular. Hopefully it could blend well with alien conquest sets, as well as having some good mini-figures and set mechanics, (unlike Legends of Chima)!
@halfpenguinhalflego - Unlikely, as this theme predates cuusoo as it's has been in development for at least 2 years ...
WANT! WANT! WANT! WANT! WANT! WANT! WANT! WANT! WANT! WANT!
At Skaerbaek Fan Weekend last month, Mads Nippers said that Technic is his favourite theme ... went on about it for a while in fact ...
Defending the Earth from nasty aliens? From where is it so familiar to me?
Eh.
For us it will come down to the minifigs. My son is reallllllly into space/aliens. I'm not sure he is going to care about insects, though, as opposed to the cool aliens from Alien Conquest. While he wanted every set from Alien Conquest, this line may be a complete dud for him if the minifigs aren't fun/cute. If they just look like bugs, then he will not see them as cool aliens, but simply as bugs.
I can't wait for this line to come out, that and Lone Ranger. Pretty much the only two themes I will be interested in for 2013; oh and any new modular building. :) I will be getting every set!!!
Space Marines was never going to fly anyway, so I don't think you can blame this if it doesn't. As for AC, it really didn't sell well at all according to most reports, hence no second wave.
This looks good, I can't wait!
I'm excited. As for continuing themes, I believe LEGO bases it on sales. If theme is selling well, they will continue it for an iteration or 2 before retiring. If it's not selling well enough, it simply ends like Dinos or Alien Conquest. I liked both, but obviously they didn't sell well enough.
more space !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the interests of my love for anthropomorphic figures, I shall be wanting a few of these sets.
Gunna re-use the head of that Toy Story 3 insect, you think..?
Brick built insect ships and insect minifigs? Yes please! Hard to imagine what the color scheme will actually look like on the bricks, but hopefully they sway away from anything too bright. Here's hoping for dark, ominous hues! I'm also hoping for a variety of insect-figs. If this theme is anything like the ridiculously cartoonish Alien Conquest I'll definitely be saving a buck.
Those look pretty great to me. Certainly above the expectations I had after I read that it would have insect-like aliens. After all the crushing disappointments with just about everything that's due out in 2013 (Chima? Meh. Star Wars? Meh. Superheroes? Meh.), I remain hopeful about this one.
^^ The colors look relatively cartoonish to me. Lime green, purple, and red don't strike me as particularly dark or ominous.
That looks pretty good; it might be a good continuation of Insectoid's legacy... except where the bug-aliens are the villains?
There's also some china, heroica and tmnt pics
For those wanting a closer look at the page (without text boxes), illustrator and LEGO Ambassador Paul Lee has the page up on his Flickr: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8463/8145566804_86f5a64964_o.jpg
When seeing that the sets were lime green, red, and purple, I was quite confused, since that's essentially the 2012 Ninjago enemy vehicles' colors, and TLG doesn't like having sets on shelves at the same time with similar color schemes. But on closer inspection, this bugship has a heaping helping of Dark Red and either Sand Yellow (Dark Tan) or Olive Green. In truth the color scheme looks a bit chaotic on this panel, but I imagine it will look a lot more enticing IRL.
The bug people look brilliant as well, though I hope they get lots of cool weapons and more variations on the bugfig theme to differentiate the figs from the different sets. It'll definitely be nice having those wing elements in more than one color (since they appear Trans. Bright Green or Trans. Light Blue here rather than the Trans. Brown (Trans-Black/Smoke) ones on The Beetle in the Ultimate Spider-Man sets.
Awesome! I've been checking Google (etc) the past two weeks to see if anyone had gotten some leaked photos of set pictures. I know there's some popular demand among adults for Halo-like space marines, personally I wouldn't mind that either. So it appears like the revival of insectoids might have some StarshipTrooper/MuvLuvAlternative plot line. I'm even more curious as to what the humans will be using to fight these creatures, whether it be vehicles similar to AlienConquest or we get something straight out of Exo-Force.
Insectoids was the only old space theme which I'm still interested in buying used from somewhere like Ebay. I have no interest in classic-space nor have I enjoyed modern twists on the theme like Alien Conquest. There's a lot of possibilities which could take Lego's next space theme into a league of its own, but after seeing much of what Lego has to offer in the first half of 2013 my hopes have already been trampled on.
When I heard insects, I was hoping for more complicated wings, like the gorgeous ones that came with many of the Insectoid sets. Some of the most beautiful pieces the Lego Corporation ever produced, in my opinion. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=30231pb01
Dammit LEGO, now I have to change my pants again.
@Aanchir - Polywen confirms the figures are olive green, but not the vehicles. You appear to be correct in your original assessment of the color scheme - lime green, black, light and dark tan, dark and trans red and a smattering of purple. In my opinion, it actually works, despite how chaotic it sounds.
I love Alien Conquest, my favorite Space theme since UFO. I'm sad it never got a second year, but I'm glad Space mixes it up. We get the same City sets every year, we get the same basic Castle sets every year.
Space is different every other year, and it spices it up, and brings something new and originality back to LEGO that is sadly missing in other themes.
OMFG... look at the "feet" on the bugship... is that 3-way technic joints?
I honestly don't get why people are feeling bad about this guy on cuusoo that created the so-called "space marines". The minifig design was obviously taken from the CMs and it looks just like halo with warthog vehicles etc.
^ I think most people who follow Cuusoo just appreciate that Nick Royer has put a LOT of effort into producing one of the better 'theme' submissions on the site, has crawled towards 10k votes as he has no licensed IP to drag in non-FOLs to vote, and now it looks like Lego always had another space theme in mind which will fill the gap he was aiming for so they may just knock it back anyway. Tough luck.
@Targellian: Yup! they appear in the Vampyre Castle, too. In brown...not exactly the nicest colour for Technic users but I imagine that they'll pop up in black or grey in a Technic set fairly soon, if they're not already scheduled to appear in next year's first wave.
I'm looking forward to this theme very much. The bug aliens looks kind of similar to some of Alien Conquest aliens, too - I can sort of see a resemblance.
@jinxjinx550: I don't particularly like the Insectoids wings (nice-looking, but tremendously specialized), but at the same time I would have liked it if the bugships' wings had been transparent like those. Certainly it's not unprecedented for click hinges to come in transparent colors-- Epic Dragon Battle had those smaller flap elements that debuted in Anakin's Podracer in Trans. Green, and next year one of the Chima sets has 1x4 click hinge bricks in Trans. Bright Orange.
Well, they obviously come from a lush planet like Feluccia or Pandora... Where lime green, black, light and dark tan, dark and trans red and a smattering of purple isn't just a color scheme, it is camouflage on their world!! =)
Thanks for the vote of confidence but I worked on Chima. However there is a new AFOL spacer at the LEGO design studio who worked on the line and he and the other designers did a fantastic job. It all looks awesome, I will be buying it all.

^^Nabii, I really thought this was one of yours from the design, now I am excited about Chima! Galaxy Squad looks like a very promising line, I hope we get further waves. What I like in Chima as a concept is the possibility to refresh it through new factions over time, it would be awesome if there is something similar in Galaxy Squad. Really looking forward to this.
So far this theme looks pretty cool, at least imo. Reminds me of Insectiods and Mars Mission, both of which I wish I had bought at least one set from.
^^^ Wait a second... emergency is that the first ever product and box shot?? (crappy dpi albeit)
Wow is that the first pic of galaxy squad?Ok I'm slowly gaining interest in the legends of chima. it's got some neat sets and some bad sets but even the bad sets are looking better every time I look at it. c'mon people be optimistic look on the good side, such as: the eagle jet legs are bad but hey the rest of it is pretty cool it wouldn't be to hard to fix up the legs to where it would be cool
I am really excited by both now!
Arrgh! More orange! Eyes burning! I hate that shade of orange. They really need to switch over to one of the other shades. Dark Orange and Bright Light Orange are so much more appealing.
You know, this is actually a pretty big deal. It's not typically Lego that gives the first look at a new product :)
@Ninjagoyo: It's funny that you say that, because for years many in the BIONICLE fan community felt the opposite way. Flame Yellowish Orange (Bricklink's Bright Light Orange, known to many BIONICLE fans as "Keetorange" after its prominent use in the set Keetongu) was used quite prominently in many sets starting in 2005, and BIONICLE fans, thinking the bright color was garish, often lamented how much they hated it compared to Bright Orange (classic orange) and Bright Yellow (classic yellow).
Then again, many people had a special antipathy towards Flame Yellowish Orange because it replaced the much more subdued earth tones (yes, including Dark Orange) that were previously used for sets themed around the element of Stone. BIONICLE fans can be funny sometimes in what colors they cling to: a lot of people who wanted brown sets to come back were at the same time complaining about the bolder, more earthy-looking "Metru" colors like Dark Red, Earth Green (Dark Green), and Earth Blue (Dark Blue) that had largely replaced the brighter colors Bright Red (classic red), Bright Blue (classic blue), and Dark Green (classic green). Then again, since BIONICLE sets weren't based strictly on real-life subjects, the colors that fans loved most often had more to do with nostalgia than anything else.
In any event, you can find loads of Flame Yellowish Orange in the lion vehicles from the Chima theme.
I'm dying to see that new pic in fullsize not blurry format =-(
Couldn't they have made blacktron, spyrius or ice planet make the return instead of insectoids? Oh well.
Orange is a great turn off. The little insect ship is awesome though.
Reminds me of a Brunnen-G fighter
How about this Vexorian, the ships are already white and orange, just add some blue and we can pretend that the sets are Ice Planet.
No idea if there is any legitimacy to this, but a site in the Netherlands has a few additional set numbers listed for this theme (at the very least, I think we can say the set names are not final). Thanks to CM4S over at Eurobricks for the tip-off. Most are slated for August 2013 while the "walker" is slated for April along with the rest of the first wave.
