UNEARTH THE SECRETS OF THE DINOSAURS WITH THE NEW LEGO IDEAS DINOSAUR FOSSILS
The LEGO Group has announced the LEGO Ideas Dinosaur Fossils, perfect for a desktop museum display
[16.10.19] Take a step back in time to when dinosaurs wandered the Earth with the all new LEGO Ideas Dinosaur Fossils set, available directly from LEGO stores and online from 1st November. Dinosaur and LEGO brick fans alike can get their hands on this highly detailed set of brick-built fossils to proudly display on their desk or at home.
This set is a must have for anyone with a passion for dinosaurs and all things prehistoric. The set contains three buildable dinosaur skeletons of the infamous T-rex, Triceratops and a Pteranodon with display stands to create a LEGO style natural history exhibit.
The LEGO Ideas Dinosaur Fossils set contains 910 pieces, creating three detailed dinosaur skeletons that are perfect to learn more about these magnificent creatures. Each of the models are posable, allowing builders to recreate ferocious poses on their desks.
The set comes complete with interesting facts about each of the dinosaurs on display and information about the sets LEGO fan designer. The set’s LEGO Ideas fan designer is Jonathan Brunn; a graphic and web designer, working in a creative agency in Perpignan, France. He is also a massive science and dinosaur geek, into space, searching for fossils and everything related… and of course, he’s a big LEGO fan.
Jonathan tells “When I was little, my passion for dinosaurs was almost obsessional. Dinosaurs were the most incredible thing ever for me, so I made this project to please my inner child! I would have loved it as a kid, and I think every kid who loves dinosaurs and science would agree with me”.
The models are built to 1:32 scale and each come with their own individual stands and a sapiens skeleton figure to truly showcase the fascinating scale of these prehistoric animals. The T-rex model is the largest of the three measuring over 7” (20cm) tall and 15” (40cm) long making this set significantly easier to display and store than a real 12-metre-long T-rex!
LEGO Ideas is a platform that allows fans to submit their own LEGO brick creations to be voted on by other fans. If a set reaches 10,000 votes then it will be reviewed by the LEGO Group and maybe even brought to life.
This detail packed LEGO Ideas model will be ready to discover in LEGO Stores and online at LEGO.com from 1st November. Act quickly before the set goes extinct!

Whys is the pterosaur there? That's not a dinosaur and it wasn't even in original...
Buildwise they look cool, but originals were WAY more acurate
I really like it. Disappointed that there is no stegosaurus in particular, but I still think it's a nice set.
Why white though?
Awesome!
Really awesome! Would love this set! Good thing my birthday is coming up in December :)
Shame there are grey and tan elements in there, all-white would look much nicer for these skeletons...
I’m keen! “When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth!”. Reasonable Aussie price too.
It's a brand new set, but it still looks like it's 65 million years old...
The CG renders make it look very ugly, particularly in this case.
I love the original and appreciate it as a MOC, but compared to LEGO's offering it was a bit big and repetitive. The switch to white was probably a practical one for parts availability, and is a shame for authenticity, but not too much of a loss.
This one looks a lot more 'fun' with poseable predator and herbivore animals; a bit more cliched as species, but they are contemporary. And the inclusion of the paleontologist and the explorer skeleton with his hat on is a delight.
A very nice set. But sad to see the stickers.
I was hoping something Minifigure scale that would give me an excuse to start working on that city museum. Well they sure didn't disappoint on my end! Bricklink, Pick A Brick, and another over-budget argument-inducing city modular build... here I go!
"All in all, this archeology toy makes a great dinosaur gift"... Archeology toy? Paleontology toy!
I love the look of this set but it is very changed from the original. I’m disappointed in the lack of a sauropod skeleton.
Maybe I'm not knowledgeable enough on dinosaur skeletons, or I'll just need to get used to the set, but I feel it's much too massive when compared to real dinosaur fossils. I wouldn't mind for this set to be more delicate, at the sacrifice of playability.
Fantastic set of models that look like they'll be a joy to build. I'm disappointed there's not more skeletons, like the brachiosaurus or the plesiosaur, but I'm grateful for what I can get. I've wanted Lego dino skeletons ever since playing the TT Lego Jurassic World game :)
This is a must for me eventually but I don't get the changes and I hoped you would have some words about it. So you had this since before yesterday, thanks for not spoiling us this surprise.
Breathing a sigh of relief that this does almost nothing for me. I wasn't too enthralled by the original submission, but the stegosaurus was probably the best one so it's a shame that it's ommitted.
However, if smaller versions if these were in an oversized modular Natural History Museum....
Love it, only thing is colour seems a very bright white, surely bone colour more appropriate?
This’ll sell like hot cakes in run up to Christmas i think. Good price as well. Wonder if Natural History museum will pick it up
I wished there was the following option in the poll "not decided - waiting to see the set in real or for the review"
I like the Indiana Jones hat on the skeleton.
Someone needs to tell them a pterosaur isn't the same as a dinosaur
These look brilliant and I wonder if it is the beginning set like minecraft was? Hopefully there will be more !
And how I'd love to have had all those parts in tan... sigh
@Tynansd - tan or earth orange would've been nicer, although I guess white will yellow over time just like the real thing lol.
I'm not really excited about it, although EUR60 isn't that heinous for 910 parts, when I saw the piececount I immediately thought this'll be another needlessly 90+ set.
@Guyon2002 they literally say that in the description
I can't really see much detail as the white pieces are against a white background, surely a contrasting background colour would have been better. But I think I will wait for the Pirate Bay Ideas set anyway.
I voted 'eventually' before realising there were stickers. I've made a decision never to buy a set with stickers. They're lazy and cheap, and Lego is a premium product. Plus, I'm saving a fortune :)
I'm sure it will sell well. The real appeal for me was the range in the original submission. Think they might have missed a trick not doing individual dinos on plinths to choose from, each one retailing between £10 and £25, with the Brachiosaur at £35ish?
Shame they left out the Brachiosaurus and the Steg. Probably not a buy for me... discounted maybe.
If there's an interview with the Lego design team, please ask why they changed it so drastically from the submitted design. This looks more like 31058 than it does the submitted design.
I honestly forgot about this until the teaser yesterday, but I quite like it. I love these scientific/historical sets, and I'll definitely pick this up pretty soon, unless reviews are negative. It's nice that the models are decently close to minifigs scale too.
Original Idea was Tan instead of white
@datsunrobbie: The answer is most likely going to have to do with the fact that the submitted design was a digital-only MOC that would probably be severely structurally unstable in real life. It was also huge, possibly bigger than the supporters were willing to commit to. The new versions are perhaps a bit less skeletal looking but also look less likely to fall to pieces from a faint breeze.
I believe it's easier for me to win the lottery than seeing LEGO produce these ball joint parts in colors other than grey and dark grey...
Looks pretty good, though I do wonder why they altered it so drastically. No matter, still looks great.
Say, I wonder how much-
*Reads price and piece count*
Woah!
@lynels I heard once that different colour bricks have very slightly different characteristics, most notably in terms of clutch power. Lego would (apparently) have to do a whole battery of tests to ensure that the ball and socket joints behaved exactly the same way if cast in a new colour, so they stick to light/dark bluish grey because that's what they have the most data on. Not sure I believe this, since the colouring is just an injected dye, but it sounds plausible.
It looks OK to me, but nothing more.
The original submission looked much nicer imho. Easy pass.
me seeing the original Ideas set with a featuring stegosaurus: if Jurrasic World doesn't bring me a LEGO stego, then at least I can have a fossil version of it! NEAT!
me seeing the final product: ohh, so no stego at the end? okay I guess...
still worth buying, but at this point I feel they dislike stegosaurus in general :(
The models are nice, but I was really hoping for the Stegosaurus. Still, I might pick this up sometime, plus the living versions from Bricklink.
@Lyichir If that's the case, those are some amazing renders, especially the "family portrait" where they are shown in a display case. It's nice for the designer that he got approved, but the released product really bears very little resemblance to his submission.
Wow the price is so much less than I was expecting, for 910 parts £55 is a steal.
I'm totally fine with the scattered grey and tan pieces - fossil skeletons don't stay up of their own accord, so any museum display has a supporting framework. Of course, the fossils aren't white either, so points off for that, but I guess it's traditional.
"2 dinosaur skeleton models (Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops) and the pterosaur reptile (Pteranodon) skeleton toy"
You can just say pterosaur, Lego. It's okay. 'Reptile' is paraphyletic anyway, it doesn't mean very much.
Really digging this set (lol see what I did there). But also I like how the models appear to be in scale with the other large Dinosaurs LEGO has released for the Jurassic World line which is amazing.
I like the pole at the end!
I like it I probably won't buy it... should of been made as a Jurassic park set with john hammond and Alan Grant in it, I also think the some more dark tan and grey should of been added for the fossils instead of white, the paleontologist minifig looks cool though:
Money saved, thanks. WAY too far from the original, easy pass.
The poll needs an option for the undecided among us. I'm pretty ambivalent towards this one, erring slightly on not because they've gone with the obvious subjects rather than something more unusual. It's the same three subjects as 31058 Mighty Dinosaurs... which is a set I like a lot, but I don't need another brick built tyrannosaurus rex, or triceratops, or pterodactyl.
Original project looked better than Lego's version. Would have preferred more models at a smaller scale. Was considering buying this set until I found out the Stegosaurus was removed. Guess I will be saving some money.
Looks nice to me! I don't really remember the original submission much, so I guess I better not go back and check then :) However, the legs of these dinosaurs don't look very skeletal to me at all...
Wow...ch-ch-ch-changes...
Design aesthetic revisions, build technique changes, color change based on brick availability, all I understand. But no Steggie? Boooo....
No doubt who the skeleton is;
Niels Milan Pedersen ;)
I feel this set has enough parts/variation to make other dinosaurs or mammoth/giant deer/wooly rhino models out of it with some creativity.
I think they picked the right size/part ratio for this.
Now I'm certain what the meaning of IDEAS project is: "It Destroys Every Approved Submission"
I would definitely have bought something more aligned with the original. But including yet another T-Rex?? Why approve it if you can't produce at least half of the original models?
Can't wait to see what some of the creatives out there do with this set. I feel as mentioned above that perhaps someone will come up with one larger model. Will wait and see.
Don’t put this set anywhere near a window! I can already see these getting really yellowed, although that might look cool.
@dbbunny the T. rex was in the original submission, as was the Pteranodon - look up the original submission and then go to Updates :-) In fact, here you go: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/517f8513-d6ec-44ea-9353-f5c488ff67ee/updates (scroll down)
Hmmm...... normally if its an Ideas set then count me in (apart from Adventure Time) but this seems so far removed from the original submission (and not in a good way) that I’m very undecided. They just don't seem as ‘skeletal’ as the original, and thats the point isn't it?
Original was way better. Missing the Stegosaurus - and white? Really? Easy pass.
@Huw: very good idea of a poll related to purchase intent. It would be great to have it each time a new set is revealed to see how the community reacts.
Looks great! Significantly smaller than the submitted model, but to be honest if it was bigger and therefore more expensive I probably wouldn't have considered to buy this set. It's definitely on my wanted list.
^^ Agreed. We've been forgetting to do so until now!
@Huw - In future polls can we have an "undecided", "maybe" or "waiting to see what the reviews say" option?
It appears the original submission has been made more robust for child play. I still like it.
I'm a little disappointed that some of the lesser known dinosaurs like the dilo were removed in favor of the ever so present T-rex, but I guess that was bound to happen. That being said, the set is still looking great to me, and I'll be picking it up.
@Guyon2002 they know that, that's why they name it as a Pterosaur not a dinosaur in the descriptions.
Pterosaurs are often featured alongside dinosaurs in museums, and are also popular, so I don't feel it's out of place here.
How does it look next to 21110?
I prefer the models in the original submission as well, but think it's cool that all these are to scale as opposed to the IDEAS submission.
Looks like someone's been watching too much Power Rangers: Dino Thunder.
I like the idea of having the skeletons the same size as the "fleshy" Lego figures--displaying them side by side could be very interesting. Like many others, I thought the original designs were more elegant; on the other hand, having them be poseable is a definite bonus. I'm very sorry to lose the stegosaurus, but perhaps having it in scale with the other selections would make it impossible to use a current Lego piece for the all-important plates? Anyway, I've saved a set of photos from the original submission and may try to retro-engineer one or two of them later on.
Despite all the changes, I still like this set enough to want it without much delay--maybe not Day 1, but very likely Week 1!
I like these ones better. The overuse of technic pieces in the original didn't make them look as nice. Can't wait to put these ones next to the 31058 Mighty Dinosaurs equivalent!
Too bad it won't release during the double points event though, it'd have been a first day purchase for me otherwise!
It's hard reading the comments, as I didn't see the originals, its making me look at them in a different way, and it shouldn't. Think the set is a little much tbh, but, i think they look good. I like the platforms they are on and the professor too (i couldnt spell palentologigststs)
I think they'll look good as display pieces anywhere. Shelf, desk or dotted around.
Hard to jusge the size from the pics, but maybe could have been a 'tad' bigger?
Will buy, but not day one and will wait for discount
