Friends Advent Calendar - Day 3
Posted by MeganL,
So far we’ve had heart and stereo ornaments - not exactly things to get us into the holiday spirit! One thing I’ve noticed this year is that the doors don’t seem to be quite as square as in previous years, and they’re easier to open (meaning I likely won’t tear them like I usually do).
So, behind the new improved doors, will we have a more Christmassy ornament behind Door number 3?
These are adorable! My first thought was that these were lovebirds - considering there are two of them - and then I thought they looked like puffins. However, I think they're supposed to be penguins, especially with the white chest. Clearly they're supposed to be toy penguins, with the wind-up key in the back. I love the use of the eyes to give the birds some expression.
A bonus with today's gift is that you get almost enough spare bricks to build yet another lovebird/puffin/penguin - just add a 1x1 brick with four knobs. So cute!

Do we really need four - no, five - advent calendar articles every day? Can't you summarize in one?
@biffuz - yes, we do.
For many Bricksetters, the various Advent Calendars are deeply valued traditions (including the time-honored comments such as "toilet paper flingers")!
@biffuz you know you can hide / disable them?
For a moment I thought it is a face split in two!
And there is the usual purple.
@biffuz, https://brickset.com/profile/newspreferences. Un-check 'Advent countdown'.
I gotta say, as toy penguins go? They're pretty freaking cute.
We absolutely need these articles - wouldn't have minded if there were even more calendars to open.
Anyhow, today's Friends offering looks like a disjointed mess. A few colours too many, really. Should have gone for 'natural' penguins.
Despite already owning three Calendars this year, I'm of a mind that I need this Friends one too. Darn it, I skipped last year because of no Mini-Dolls, but now... Now I may need to try and collect them all again, hunting down last years and picking up this years to add to my Advent Calendar Countdown myself.
I don't care what they are, I love them.
Those are certainly effective birds. Not sure that they’re effective penguins, though. The beaks are a bit odd and they’re kind of short.
@Huw thanks, but still, how about 1 per day?
They are really cute and well designed. One of the best builds overall considering all the advent calendars gifts so far. Innovative, colorful, yes, I like it.
Biffuz, I can't see what can be boring having several articles about advent calendars per day?
I am with @biffuz and would also kinda like just one Advent article. Not because I'm uninterested, (I actually like to see them all), just because it's a pain to have to visit 5 pages!
Anyway, I don't mind too much. Keep up the reviews brickset team!
I want to follow the advent calendars but 5 articles every single day really clogs up the homepage, and other interesting articles can get buried very very quickly. 1 mega-article makes a lot of sense, just sayin
I personally prefer the five different articles. It allows me to view the Clikits, Friends, and City calendar gifts without ruining the Star Wars and Harry Potter ones for me.
I can see how one article would be preferred, but then it should simply be links to each individual article in my opinion.
I have to say, the doors do seem better. I offered my 7 year old Daughter the 2 previous City Advents ('17 and '18) or this one..... and I think its the most value for money. She loves it. And without me saying anything (Daddy likes to keep the boxes) she has opened 3/3 with no tares too. I have stuck to my OCD method of removing the outer case completely and looking inside to build the sets. Maybe I wont next year now. (for info she wanted the '19 Star wars Advent but that's mine)
I for one, love all the advent articles.
Some people only want to see one calendar.
But I’m with @SithLord196, I want to see some but not the HP and SW calendars, I want to open them myself!
I’d definitely not want them combined.
I agree about the doors too
My 6yr old hasn’t ripped or bent any of the three doors so far.
@Huw... thank you, I did not know about the news preferences... not that I wanted to disable the Advent feeds, but leaving out all other countries shopping is a pleasure.
Those are the best toy birds (or birds in general) I've seen in a while! Also, I like your line of thinking @BrickWeed !
As a fan of classic windup toys, I really like these!
i didnt get an extra 1x1 brick with 5 knobs nor an extra gold piece. I am guessing @MeganL did, as she only needs one more 1x1 brick with 5 knobs to make a third penguin. I got ripped!
