Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 17

Posted by ,

Our third Separatist item arrived yesterday and I am wondering whether anything associated with the Galactic Republic will appear before this 2019 calendar concludes.

Perhaps that will commence on day seventeen...

Escape pods appear throughout the entire Star Wars saga, although I imagine this model is intended to represent an escape pod from the Tantive IV. Its cylindrical shape and colour scheme reflect the original vehicle and this design is impressive, incorporating a red 2L axle that connects two 2x2 truncated cones in opposing directions. 75244 Tantive IV includes escape pods which are formed using the same pieces!

The pearl silver engine nacelles look superb and I think it would be difficult to improve upon this design, although this engine arrangement looks most reminiscent of Republic escape pods. Nevertheless, I am quite pleased with the newest model, especially because it differs from any previous Advent Calendars.

Overall - 4.0 - Interesting construction techniques have been used for this escape pod and it resembles the onscreen craft but offers relatively little play value.

Huh. I wasn’t sure what it was at first. Harry Potter’s entry may have been “weaker” but I think it offers more play and display value then this ship does.

Truncated cone parts are nice to have, but otherwise... let's call it "not exciting".

Printing would have helped, but unique printing is rare in Advent Calendars.

Battle of the Licensed Advent Calendars continues. HP fans are riding into Day 17 after securing three consecutive points and are feeling more confident than they have all holiday season. Will Day 17 see them bolster their lead or will SW put an end to the point streak? Let’s find out.

Behind Day 17’s door is another house flag, this time, Hufflepuff. This is now entry number 4 in “the gift that shall not be named” series. Whether the flags are as bad as originally surmised can be debated, but what cannot be debated is that this is the fourth time fans have built the same design. It’s simply not good enough, and as many fans have pointed out, placing the flags in pairs behind the same window would have been much more welcome. I for one cannot add much more only to say that the flag-saga has now come to a close and from here on in, the offerings should be as novel as they are diverse.

On the flip side, SW fans were presented with a buildable escape pod. The design while relatively simple uses unique techniques as the reviewer points out. The presence of pearl silver comes to represent the engines is very welcome as these pieces are rarer in this color. Although this might not be the strongest offering it is recognizable, uses unique techniques, and includes rare parts- all ingredients for a healthy offering.

In conclusion, today’s point goes to SW- based both on score and on the repetitive nature of HP’s offering. If there’s a pearl silver lining for HP fans, it’s that the flags are finished and the remaining 7 days should be much more exciting. With the win, SW cuts the lead down to a single point and refuses to give in. This battle should be exciting until the very end. The score is now:

HP- 9
SW- 8

To be continued...

I'm pretty sure this is to scale with the tantive iv from this year

Hold up, how does a banner have more PLAY value than this

Right? Sway in the indoor wind vs. swooshing around space and crash landing... hmmm

It's nicely apparent what this is, but I fail to see it offering any entertainment.

I think it's a cool little model, and when I'm bored with it nearly every part can be repurposed easily within the SW theme. Think cargo pod, power pack, munitions, extra greebling on a large model etc, etc.

By in Ireland,

I like today's build and hopefully this Advent Calendar will push on and leave the Harry Potter Advent Calendar far behind!!

Clever design for this model Pod. Simple and effective.

Any recognizable vehicle using less than 10 pieces is always impressive to me. Play on!

Hey, for as repetitive as the HP calendar has been, nobody felt the need to eject from it...

I like it!

@CCC - I think the play value is low because this escape pod has no weapons and cannot really interact with anything else from the Advent Calendar, so far. Swooshability is rather important but is certainly not the only influence upon play.
