Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 19

Posted by ,

Our attention has returned to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope during recent days. I expect that will continue today, although models inspired by the original movie are relatively common.

Something brand new would be welcome...

75192 Millennium Falcon introduced an impressive Mynock and this parasitic creature returns today! Its appearance remains unchanged from the 2017 version, featuring dark tan wings that were produced for the earlier set and have only appeared on three subsequent occasions. The reddish brown mouth looks perfect too and can connect to any studded surface.

Furthermore, I like the reddish brown horn which forms the tail and the Mynock's trans-green eyes look striking, although they probably stand out too much when compared with the onscreen animal. Even so, this is an interesting addition to the Advent Calendar and I am sure this model will be completely new to many people, given the expense of 75192 Millennium Falcon.

Overall - 4.5 - Animals from the Star Wars universe are always enjoyable and this Mynock looks superb, although something unique might have been even better.

This looks like one of the best non-minifigure builds of the entire calendar.

Just as for the rebel fleet trooper minifig, I have been waiting for a long time to have an opportunity to put my hands on this one! Only available in 75192,i t was of course impossible to get in an official set for me but from ordering specific parts on Bricklink.
Now I have it, at last, and already added it on my MF, eating wires while Han and Leia are in the cockpit seeing it through the canopy. One of the most appealing gift this year to me. Deserves a 5 IMO.

By in United States,

If I collected LEGO Star Wars, I’d be pleased with this build as an ‘army builder’ to give the lone mynock in 75192 Millennium Falcon a buddy with whom to munch cables.

This has got to trounce HP’s generic fireplace!

Came here just to troll the SW fans. HP's offering today is much better ;)

Great for someone like me who wants the UCS Millennium Falcon but who knows that realistically they won't get it. This is a cute little build and has some interesting building techniques. Love getting the brown cows horn plus an extra of it and I also appreciate the hard to find wing elements.

A great day for the Advent and marks just 6 sleeps before the big day.

I thought there would be something better seeing as how the rise of sky walker is premiering tonight in the US.

This is great- it's a good build, and a way to get something which is otherwise ridiculously exclusive.

Battle of the Licensed Advent Calendars continues. After an epic, head-to-head minifig battle on Day 18 which saw HP take its most contested point yet, SW again trails by 2 with six days remaining. After superb offerings yesterday, let’s see what each calendar has left in the tank for Day 19.

Behind the door of HP’s Day 19 is a buildable Christmas fireplace. For those with a keen eye, this mini-build is shown on the box artwork so it was to be expected at some point. Fireplace/mantle scenes are common in Christmas-based builds, but its inclusion here seems fitting, given that HP is developing an overall scene in the Great Hall. The mantle allows leftover chess pieces from Day 16 to be displayed, which is a nice. The medium nougat pieces forming the base are welcome rare colors, especially the decorative 1x1x2 design bricks. The wreathe with cherry inlay above the fireplace is also a nice touch, but it could have been something else (see below). The major knock on this build is that, unlike every other entry in the calendar, there is nothing definitively “Harry Potter” about today. For the most part, every other build to date represents something from the Wizarding World- be it a minifig, accessory, or both (one could argue the trees on Day’s 3 and 4 also slide into this category). That said, while the mini build itself is good, it is slightly disappointing to get a non-theme related entry this late into the calendar- something that could have been solved with a printed 2x2 portrait of Hedwig above the fireplace (just as an example).

On the flip side, SW fans opened today’s door to find a buildable Mynock. This build is only available in the UCS Millennium Falcon set. Naturally, this is a highly sought-after item for SW fans who may or may not have been able to purchase the UCS set. The dark tan wings are a very unique element as the reviewer points out. The presence of the reddish-brown pieces are also nice and the fact that the Mynock can connect via any studded surface adds a playability function to the build. While the overall design doesn’t speak to me (a little cartoon-y; the eyes especially) this is more of a subjective comment and won’t detract from the overall rating. As the reviewer points out, for many SW fans, this will be a brand new item for them and I am sure they are thrilled with today’s offering.

In conclusion, both calendars followed up with respectable builds today, after pulling out all the stops in yesterday’s high caliber battle. But based on the reviewer’s scores and also the fact that the SW entry stayed “on theme” today, the point goes to SW. With the win, SW is hanging around, cutting the deficit to a single point heading into the 20’s of the month. As advertised, the battle continues to be close and unless something dramatic occurs over the next few days, this one is going down to the wire. With that, the score is now:

HP- 10
SW- 9

To be continued…

By in Puerto Rico,

This set is a beast.

By in Germany,

Love it. A nice little build with play and display value, and not easily available otherwise. Also a thing for minifigs that isn't massively scaled down, which is rare in SW advent calendars.

Interesting build and hopefully the Harry Potter Advent calendar will now fade into obscurity!!!!

Only a 4/5 from me.
Nice wing pieces though.

Huh, I gotta double check my panel instructions, I could have sworn the mouth part was put on the rear facing stud from the LEGO camera element. Pretty great build though.
