Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 24

Posted by ,

Christmas Eve has arrived, heralding the finish of the latest Star Wars Advent Calendar. One festive character emerged yesterday and another seems inevitable today.

Hopefully the final item will prove satisfying...

Star Wars characters dressed as Santa Claus traditionally emerge on the final day and this adorable porg conforms to that trend. The combination seems odd but works remarkably well in my opinion as the red and white hat slots nicely onto the creature's head, much like with BB-8 who earlier appeared in the 2017 Star Wars Advent Calendar.

However, while BB-8 elicited some criticism because the Astromech Droid was otherwise unchanged, this porg incorporates red and white elements for its body! The resultant figure is recognisably festive but could easily be changed to become a standard porg if you prefer. A tiny pearl gold present is also provided today, consisting of a 1x2 jumper plate and a golden star component.

Overall - 4.5 - I am pleased with this seasonal porg which looks incredibly cute, although an exclusive festive minifigure might have been even better.

Nine different Star Wars Advent Calendars have been produced since 2011, providing an enjoyable range of miniature models from throughout the Star Wars series. 75245 Star Wars Advent Calendar encompasses all three trilogies which is brilliant and several of these vehicles have been excellent. I was particularly delighted with the Quadjumper, the Corporate Alliance Tank Droid and the Cloud Car.

The minifigure selection is superb too, featuring several desirable characters for army building along with some who are only otherwise available in expensive sets. The exclusive Luke Skywalker is very appealing, although that has been overshadowed to some extent by the greater quantity of exclusive parts in 75964 Harry Potter Advent Calendar. Hopefully a higher budget for new pieces and prints will be assigned to the Star Wars Advent Calendar in future, thereby matching the Harry Potter set.

I hope you have enjoyed my analysis of the Star Wars Advent Calendar. Which items have been your favourites and have you been satisfied with the Advent Calendar? Let us know in the comments.

Oh hey, you were actually right about no weapons rack, @CapnRex101 .

So much Sequel content really didn't help this calendar, and the Porg is a really disappointing note to go out on - a simple santa hat does not compare to the wonderful festive figures we got prior to 2018. I'd feel robbed opening this up today.

Oh, do have to give credit for the Cloud Car; perhaps the best model of any calendar this year.

By in United States,

I skipped attaching the orange “foot” to the Porg and instead used one of the spare black 1x1 round tiles from earlier in the month to mimic Santa’s boots.

Overall I enjoyed the calendar, I think the Gonk droid is my favorite though I really liked adding a Mynock to my 7965 Falcon.

Thanks for all the time you spent doing the daily posts!

I laughed at this one. Nice conclusion to the calendar.

Well the final scores of the great Advent Calendar wars

Today the Harry Potter advent gave us a great set of pieces including the chest, Hedwig and some nice tiles including an exclusive 2x3. Star Wars gives us a exclusive Santa Porg with some fairly common parts and a few uncommon ones like its head piece. The Porg also had a nice present build.

But I believe the Harry Potter has to take the final point: here is the final score

HP : 13
SW : 11

Merry Christmas Everyone and a Happy New Year

Thanks to @Matt_z_ for starting this great Advent Calendar score.

Thanks very much @CapnRex101 for the great Star Wars advent calendar daily reviews.

And so the final day in the Advent Calendar battle is upon us! All month both Harry Potter and Star Wars have provided exclusive minifgures and builds. Let's see who won today!

Harry Potter offers a wonderful build today which received a score of 4.0. The chest is a wonderful inclusion but the star of the build is the Hogwarts acceptance letter. The print is stunning and is a must have for all HP fans. The inclusion of the chocolate and Hedwig is also appreciated. SW really needs to bring its A game today.

Star Wars offered up a Porg today! SW wins automatically.

This leaves the score tied! Both calendars have amassed 12 points!
This may seem different from yesterday, but based on viewer input I changed the winner of yesterday's battle to SW.

And now for the final decision: Which calendar won over all?

Harry Potter:
This is the first time we have ever gotten a HP calendar and its performed beyond my hopes. With so many fun characters and builds it will truly brighten up any HP fan's day. The best part about the calendar is that there are no micro scale models, allowing everything to be seamlessly integrated into your Hogwarts castles.

Star Wars:
As always, this calendar is full of impressive minifgures and adorable micro scale models. Each one is a magnificent display piece and offers lots of fun for all. The characters can all be integrated into your SW displays and the micro models can be hung up or displayed and are sure to brighten up any room.

Final Verdict:
It's a tie! 100%. Each calendar brings its own charm to the table and will be a delight for their respective fans. No matter which calendar you bought you're sure to be delighted. There are countless ups and downs with each but the new prints, characters, and designs more than make up for it.
Make sure to cast your vote down below if you disagree with me!

Thank you to Mat_Z_ for starting this and thank you all for letting me finish! Thank you to the Brickset staff for posting these reviews each day and thank you all for commenting on them.
Have a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, and safe new year!

Merry Christmas, everyone! And thanks again for the excellent reviews and SW / HP running battle! Sorry again for jumping the gun yesterday...

And although HP wins the overall battle, the Luke minifig wins the individual gold medal. Looking forward to opening Yoda tomorrow,

Yes, Merry Christmas one and all. Got a few Episode IX sets under my tree and am feeling pretty smug for picking up the Sith Troopers Battle Pack in my local toyshop today. Been a lucky boy this year after picking up both SW and HP calendars discounted on the 1st of December .....

By in United States,

I love this porg, my first one. I think the cute Santa Porg is a perfect end to this calendar. In fact, this calendar ended on a high note with the present GNK droid, too.

Great calendar. I am very pleased with this offering. It had great minifigs, some cute and clever little builds of spacecraft and vehicles, and no weapons rack.

By in United States,

Yeah I gotta agree with the tie scenario. The Porg feels like a stronger entry today than the HP one. I couldn’t figure out how to best integrate the HP into my LEGO Christmas shelf, but the Porg nor perched on the roof of the Firehouse.

By in United Kingdom,

The center of the Porg is exclusive to this set in red so that's a nice edition

By in United States,

Um...I don’t know what “but the Porg NOR perched..” means either.

The holiday egg nog is STRONG with this one...

Oh, and I now think that LEGO should start putting a Battle Droid in every Advent calendar they do, no matter the theme, every year, and never address how weird that would be. The way Paul Rudd has been playing the same ‘Mac and Me’ clip every time he goes on any show that Conan O’Brien has hosted.

Few would find the Battle Droid thing as funny as I would, but that’s what I want for Christmas, Santa. :D

By in Germany,

Even though I love Star Wars and have several of the advent calendars of previous years, this one to me was a huge disappointment and imho doesn't hold a candle to the wonderful HP one. The only redeeming features were some of the minifigs, the Mynock and the superb cloud car. But overall for next year they really have to up the budget to include some really worthwhile stuff again.

By in United States,

I can't complain as I was able to find this set for 50% off....but the final day "festive Porg" is a HUGE let down. I really wish Lego would bring back the exclusive print figs for the final day (love love LOVE the 2013 Santa Jango Fett!). All in all I'm pretty happy with this year's calendar ...my only real gripe is the Porg on day 24.

By in United States,

I think a tie about captures this contest--which was definitely a basketball game rather than a football match (by which I mean soccer, not American football, in deference to Brickset's location in England). Yes, from time to time the ball clanked off the rim and there were even a few airballs, but both teams poured it on at the end IMO and fans of each side ought to be pretty happy with their heroes' performances.

Although I bought the HP calendar with a few days to go, based on my feeling that it would do a superb job of filling out the interior of the Great Hall, I'm heading out into cyberspace to see if I can find a SW one too. I don't find the Santa Porg at all disappointing and the Mynock blew me away. Several of the smaller microbuilds will make great presents for the deserving children of the Winter Village, as well.

Thanks for a great paired set of reviews, Cap'n--as always, I enjoyed it all very much!

By in United States,

Why does everything have to be a pissing contest? I just enjoyed the calendars - I bought the SW one and will build 2 of the HP models - The Pennant thing was blah to me. But the Nano Train & Already built the Chess set - everybodies opinion will be different...

HP has been good enough for me to buy a few sets of theirs but I usually buy what I like & have room on my boat for...
