Twelve Ideas projects qualify for third 2019 review
Posted by Huw,
The third 2019 LEGO Ideas review period ended today and LEGO announced this afternoon that a dozen projects will be considered, including several that we featured here and encouraged you to vote for.
In addition, LEGO took the opportunity to remind us that the results of the second 2019 review are due soon, in which 10 projects are being considered. Hopefully, the fate of Anatomini will be revealed too, a decision postponed from the last results announcement in September.

I'm hoping for Zelda, Ratatouille or Winter Chalet.
Bionicle would be great!
Hoping for Zelda and Futurama!
Hoping for the Bionicle and aquarium
The BIONICLE one is what I'm hoping for most, but the Legend of Zelda, Futurama, and Aquarium ones are really good too!
I love that aquarium, that's what I'm rooting for.
Futurama is my fave, Zelda would be fun
The Zelda one doesn't have any special molds this time, yes? Maybe Lego will finally score a deal with a Nintendo property...
Also I really want Anatomini to pass, as I stated last time.
I think the typewriter and aquarium are great ideas and true to the theme, but I love Ratatouille....
Needs to be the Queen set, I need an official Freddie Mercury minifigure no matter what his wearing, I'd also would love to see the Planet Express set as I love the Futurama series.
Wouldn't mind the:
Home Alone
Ratatouille
Type Writer
Winter Chalet
Personally have no interests in the rest.
That Home Alone set is AMAZING!
Would love to see Futurama in LEGO form, but this one lacks minifigures...
The Queen set looks great, but I'm kinda saturated with sitcom sets at this point.
The Zelda, Futurama, and Ratatouille sets look fantastic. I would appreciate any of those.
I really like the Huascar...anything from Peru :)
I also like the aquarium and the typewriter.
All that said, my gut feeling is that either the aquarium or the Ratatouille set are the ones that ultimately get approved.
Where's the love for the Toronto Rocket? More trains!
I vote The Office. :]
BIONICLE, Futurama, and the Aquarium are my favorites.
Bionicle needs to happen, and I feel that with the success of the Friends set recently, LEGO would be stupid to not at least entertain the idea of a set based off of The Office.
Futurama for me, but I can’t help thinking the Aquarium will do well.
I think it’ll be Seinfeld and Ratatouille, aquarium as a strong contender too.
Argument for Ratatouille: Ideas has become Disney’s baby - a method to churn out one off sets based on their IP without releasing an entire line.
Argument for Seinfeld: two other sitcoms aimed at adults made it already
Argument for aquarium: the primarily displayable sets seem to do well (Maze, pop up book, ship in a bottle, caterham)
Personally I prefer the non-licensed Ideas sets, it feels like people are voting for the set on its’ own merits and not the license. But damn that Planet Express ship looks good, so I’m willing to admit I’m a hypocrite as well.
I wouldn't mind Bionicle and Zelda sets.
I think the train, aquarium and Bionicle are the least likely, after that it's hard to call.
Having said that, this is probably the least excited I've been about an Ideas review round...
Queen: A Queen-themed minifigure set might happen some day, but not like this. I don't think Lego's ready to take on a cross-dressing theme yet. :) Chance = Very Low
Seinfeld: Given the success of the Friends and BBT ideas, it makes sense, but people might decide this TV theme set is one too many. Chance = Medium
Zelda: A Zelda theme set is a no-brainer, it's just a matter of getting the license from Nintendo, which will run them a pretty penny. Chance = Medium
Planet Express: Futurama! Won't succeed without minifigures though, and the Planet Express HQ may be a better way to introduce the theme. Chance = Medium-Low
Ratatouille: We know Lego is willing to make Ideas sets with Disney themes (Steamboat Wille, Tron Legacy), and this one is charming, but it needs a piece count reduction and Lego would just release a theme set itself if the theme was popular enough. Chance = Medium
Typewriter: Clever, no licensing, right-sized. Chance = High
Bionicle: It's a bit weird making an Ideas tribute to a recently discontinued Lego theme. Chance = Medium-Low
Huascar: Many ships have been reviewed and none passed, so good luck. This one doesn't have much international recognition. Chance = Low
Winter Chalet: Old Fishing Store got through, so large buildings do stand a chance. Needs some redesigning and maybe piece count reduction too. Chance = Medium
Toronto Rocket: I don't see a subway train from a specific city happening. Does it stand out that much? Chance = Very Low
Home Alone: Has the same problem as the A Christmas Story idea. Sure, some fun things happened inside, but it's just a big, plain house. Chance = Low
Aquarium: Clever, no licensing, right-sized (deja vu!). Chance = High
@xprojected
Good write-up, I agree with most of those!
Praise Mata-Nui.
I can only picture someone at LEGO feels like they're playing Whack-A-Mole with all the Zelda Ideas projects.
My personal favs are the Queen, Futurama and Ratatoullie sets. I don't think Queen has much chance though given the characters natures of cross dressing and Lego's 'family friendly' code. Futurama needs minifig to be a seller, so unless they add some it won't do well, and Ratatoullie is one of my and my partners favourite movies, though I think they've overdone the detailing on it and we'll end up with a much simplified set if it does get through.
As mentioned by others, Zelda is the no brainer to make, but they just won't get the licence rom Nintendo to do it.
Seinfeld takes it for sure. After the Big Bang Theory and FRIENDS.
I would like to see Ratatouille pass. Speaking of, did any one else think that the Parisian Restaurant modular had some references to the Pixar movie, like the moped and the rat behind the building?
Only Bionicle looks interesting.
Ratatouille, Winter Chalet and Aquarium!
Winner has to be Futurama...the series that brought the classic "Shut up and take my money!" meme. They've already produced a Zoidberg Alien (CMF Series 13) just wrong colour and needs pincers instead of hands (like Davy Jones).
I won’t mind Seinfeld, but I feel like Friends and Big Bang are too similar. Otherwise Ratatouille or Home Alone are my favourites. And that Winter Chalet looks appealing.
Here is my prediction breakdown:
Queen: I Want to Break Free-- I'll be surprised if this one makes it, given that it's a little obscure for many people (including me).
Seinfeld 30th Anniversary-- Seems likely to succeed, given the popularity of the show plus LEGO's love of sitcoms.
The Legend of Zelda: BotW Stables-- While a Zelda set would do well, I'm just not sure about this one.
Planet Express Delivery Ship-- The retro aesthetic plus the popularity of the source material makes this a rather strong competitor.
Ratatouille: Open The Doors!-- LEGO loves Disney, so I'm sure they wouldn't hesitate to make good on their pre-existing licensing agreement, though I don't feel to confident in this one.
LEGO Typewriter-- It's original, it has moving parts, and it's a classic icon of a bygone century(?). I predict that it has a good shot at succeeding, but size may be a limiting factor.
The Legend of the BIONICLE: Celebrating 20 years of Lego stories-- I know EVERYBODY seems to like Bionicle, but I don't. However, this is not about me nor my lack of nostalgia for the theme, but rather how likely LEGO is to make this idea into a set. By that metric, I would say that it could happen, but given that many new prints would need to be created (along with the fact that no Bionicle parts are even included), I am not sure that LEGO will go through with this one.
The Huascar-- While it is a nice model, in my opinion it doesn't seem like it would fit well in the Ideas range.
Winter Chalet-- Between Friends, City, and Winter Village, this one doesn't seem likely to break through the competition. It's a shame, though, as I really like this one.
Toronto Rocket Subway Train - Minifigure scale Electric Train-- City-style trains in the Ideas theme? Not gonna happen.
Home Alone. McCallister's House-- Given the status of the movie, this is a very strong entry, though it is a bit large.
Clockwork Aquarium-- This one really stood out to me, what with the amazing kinetics and all, and is original and well-executed enough to make it. Fingers crossed that we get this one!
Good luck to all the creators!
Bionicle, please.
Ratatouille I definitely want, but I wouldn't mind Legends of Zelda. Home Alone isn't too bad either. The rest.... meh, they either won't pass review or are too niche.
Being a big Bionicle fan (as can be surmised by my username), I would love for the Bionicle set to go through, but I can see how the failure of G2 might make Lego hesitant to produce something Bionicle related again. In terms of the other projects, it would be interesting to see the typewriter and aquarium, Ratatouille is somewhat of a sure bet due to Lego's work with Disney, Seinfeld would go along well with past lego ideas sets like The Big Bang Theory and Friends, Queen could possibly work due to the Beatles set, Futurama could work due to The Simpsons sets from a couple years back and the others I have no freaking clue (aside from Zelda which probably won't make it due to Nintendo's previous work with Knex)
Bionicle is the only one that catches my eye this time around. I'm a long time fan of the franchise, both gen1 and gen2. This idea is a very loving tribute to gen1 and it's 10 year legacy, and I'd love to see it pass.
Sure, it might not have a lot of appeal outside of us bonkle fans, but I think there's more than enough of us to warrant this nice little tribute. Ideas has done some niche stuff, I don't think it's a stretch. Plus they wouldn't have to go through the hassle of acquiring a license and pay royalties and all that. I'm rooting for this one, but only time will tell. But how I'd love to have one more visit to the time before time...
If there were to be a Zelda set, I wouldn’t pick this. There are more iconic scenes and places to make. It’s very well made though for sure.
I’m really hoping for the Zelda one, mostly because it could clear the way for more Nintendo sets, but it is unlikely due to Lego having to get the ok from Nintendo. Still gonna cross my fingers.
Hoping for Home Alone and Seinfeld.
Bionicle, typewriter or the aquarium would be my shortlist. The latter two kind of occupy the same niche, and I think are in a similar vein to past entries like the ship in a bottle or the pop up book. All 3 are (or could be made) a moderate size too.
Any ideas on when we can expect the next ideas set? I don't follow this process too closely, am I right in thinking that the last shortlist hasn't had it's winner announced and produced yet?
Hope we all will be able to chant "Hail Denmark!" when the results finally roll in!
I reaaaaally want Ratatouille made but IDK how likely it is
If there’s no Bionicle we riot.
hoping for Zelda, as not only I love this game, but also the stables look great and could be fun even for not fans
tho it will probably fail... bc Nintendo will say no :<<
I’d prefer the winter chalet, or the home alone house,
but those don’t seem likely given their size. The
Ratatouille and Zelda set is most likely if they can get the
licensing. Otherwise either the Aquarium or the bionic set,
the latter of which I don’t care for but can appreciate the
nostalgia for the fans and excellent work put into it.
Best of luck to all!
Personally tired of the Seinfeld, Friends etc type sets. Sure I guess they are quite popular and can draw a new crowd into the LEGO store even just for the one time.
Those I would like to see through:
The Legend of Zelda: Seems to be this ones biggest obstacle would be licensing. Fond memories of play Zelda many moons ago.
The Huascar: Personally would love a large LEGO ship. They have done at least one in the past with the Creator Expert series however perhaps as mentioned the name recognition isn't here with this one.
Toronto Rocket Subway: Simply a vote for the home country guy although I realize its unlikely as I think this is possibly a very specialized interest for most. I think the TTC would certainly have some name recognition coming from Toronto.
Clockwork Aquarium: Perhaps this would be my vote for the one most likely to get through of those I like the most.
Seinfeld, Bionicle, and Zelda are easy picks for me. Would love if a Nintendo ideas set could open the floodgates.
Please, not another licensed IP Ideas set. Nothing wrong with them, but my personal opinion is that IDEAS sets, and LEGO, in general, are overdoing it as of late.
My prediction is, most likely, Seinfeld. Given, it's pretty much a household name, still well known (unlike Ratatouille, which I only remember from it being in theaters when I was a kid) , and LEGO has already produced several similar sets, involving Friends and Big Bang Theory.
Winter Chalet or the Train!
The Huascar looks simply awesome, and I also hope that both the fishtank and the winter chalet make it.
Ratatouille and Home Alone.
I'm rooting for the aquarium. The chalet looks good too.
Regardless of which sets are approved, I will more than likely buy one of each. I guess I am just a sucker when it comes to Ideas and almost any other LEGO theme. The sets that I would buy multiples of are Planet Express, Winter Chalet, and The Huascar. After all, how many typewriters does one need anymore. Best wishes for good luck to all of the designers.
The aquarium, the train and the typewriter are my favorites. :)
The aquarium and typewriter are both awesome, and the former is fun and colourful for younger builders to be interested too. Some of the others are still heavily getting by on popular licensing. That Seinfeld set is just a massive bore. At least the BBT and Friends sets are more colourful.
Shows how much Futurama I watch that I thought someone had just come up with a cool retro spaceship design of their own and called it Planet Express.

I think your analysis is pretty much dead-on. Thanks!
What about the mystery shack? Is that going to be reviewed next wave? https://ideas.lego.com/projects/ec3ae09e-8507-4d51-b6da-3d08cf6de050
1. Bionicle 20th Anniversary
2. Seinfeld
3. Toronto Subway

That was unfortunately turned down early on, for unspecified reasons.
^mainly because of rumors that there will be GF Brickheadz on Eurobricks.
Though keep in mind that Home Alone is now under the Disney banner, so that also has as fair of a chance with Ratouille.
Only one I've recently cared about is The Office... :(
If LEGO is going to insist on making Ideas sets out of sitcoms, might as well be one I actually like.
Dream pick: Planet Express
Lego’s pick: Aquarium
And here I am just waiting for news on The Pirate Bay :)
The Home Alone house is a cool idea and Seinfeld is a curiosity. Nothing else seems very interesting.
Hear hear exactly! Plus this can be modded for NYC, or Chicago metros too.

Nothing here hits me the way some previous Ideas sets have. Nothing here I would buy. We've had enough movie / room sets, the buildings are OK but not spectacular, and the other stuff doesn't really stand out (yes I am a Futurama fan, but do I need that rocket on my desk?)
Winter Chalet is my favorite of this bunch, that looks amazing.
Typewriter is an impressive display model and I'm sure would be an entertaining build. Home Alone house is nostalgically cool and well done. I'm a huge fan of Queen and the model looks pretty good I just don't see it passing.
I do hope Anatomini gets approval also.
Lego will have to make Kevin's house to avoid the wrath of the booby trapping 8 year old. Imagine what that kid could do in a lego factory.
Home Alone is such a great idea for a set! I love it!
Cheering for Winter Chalet. The Aquarium is not my favourite but I understand its appealing to many fellows.
I think the aquarium is the only one to make it through.
MAYBE Ratatouille, but that set seems too large - with added Disney costs it’d be $100+ which is probably more than most would spend.
Zelda would be swell. No way they get the license. I am not sure Seinfeld would sell as well as Friends so I don’t see that getting through.
Seinfeld and Clockwork Aquarium have impressed me. I hope they are elected. What I especially liked about the aquarium is the size, small yet effective. Seinfeld is probably a given, having seen the Friends and the BIg Bang Theory.
The BOTW Ideas set might be the perfect occasion for TLG to acquire the Nintendo license for making building sets. Even if the project doesn't pass the review stage, that means we'll gonna see in the next 3/4 years Lego x Nintendo sets. (even if that means the sets will be highly overpriced)
I am sure the aquarium will make it!
Probably anatomini as well..
The rest of the sets depends on what Lego want so they are harder to guess..
The only one that interests me is Winter Chalet but I don't k know if it interests me enough to buy it.
If Lego doesn't produce that Futurama set, I'll make my own. With blackjack and hookers.
Really pulling for the Planet Express ship. Would love a full line of Futurama figs ala' the Simpson styled molds, etc. Since they've done business with Groening before I'm hoping this gets through and fully produced.
I'm thinking though a more built up detailed mechanical aquarium will be the kit that comes out and possibly the Home Alone set if they go with a fully detailed home with traps, etc. Give it the same attention to detail like the Stranger Things kit.
Is there an anniversary or possible new movie coming out from this soon?
Zelda...Zelda...Zelda.... Dont leave me hanging guys.... Zelda!
Most comments are wishes, not predictions.
I cannot predict (LEGO had strange choices for my mind) but Winter Chalet and home Alone would be great.
Great selection!
My favorites 1 Futurama, 2 Typewriter, 3 Huascar
Something around Zelda (and other videogames classics) should definitely happen.
fingers crossed for either the Queen - I want to break free, Typewriter and the Ratouille
Hands down, SEINFELD!!!! Please! If multiple are chosen, Zelda, and the Subway train are SWEET!!!
I really hope zelda is chosen
I remember supporting the Christmas Story House project. Yeah, it was a little plain, but iconic. For those who think Home Alone is too similar, I do think that house has more detail. Also, if you added a few booby traps on the inside and gave it a couple of play features, it would be appealing to all age brackets. I think it could have a chance. And absolutely the bathroom would need to have a mirror. The Kevin minifigure MUST have that famous expression for the bathroom scene.
I’m still fingers crossed for Anatomi.
TTC Subway (it’s not a train;) because cheering for home country & think it’d be a seller for transit fans in many places around the globe. Bionicle set looks amazing & if enough fans vote also w/wallets would be a good internal IP set. Futurama ship would be great to use with the old school spaceman CMF. Personally I’m quite over remainder tv/movie licensed vignettes...
Maybe sets that don’t make it via mainstream LEGO shops, could be available via Bricklink in some manner? The designs are there & Bricklink inventories could provide parts (unless some new colours &OR moulds are needed), which adult builders/fans could buy that way?
Planet Express and Home Alone are my favourites.
Don't mind me, I'm just quietly rooting for the BIONICLE project over here...
so tired of all the licensed stuff. typewriter is neat but all i'm interested in is the aquarium
Aquarium most original LEGO-like build.
Licensed = meh.
My vote for "The Legend of Zelda: BotW Stables" because it will fit in a apocalyptic setting and/or "Queen: I Want to Break Free" because of the wallpaper. -And the "Clockwork Aquarium". Small and cheap.
This is what will be chosen:
Anatomy
Aquarium
Typewriter
Just an educated supposition.
Hoping for the Chalet as a “replacement” for fishing Store in the line up,
Guessing for “more time” on the typewriter (also to push apart from Piano),
And assuming Seinfeld will take the next “random tv” slot
What is LEGO's hang-up on approving Anatomini?
I'm definitely rooting for Seinfeld to win.

That's just part of life in Paris.

That too.

"TTC Subway (it’s not a train;)"
Subway trains are still trains.
Anything that isn't a licensed product I'm good with. A few licensed products in Ideas have wowed me, but mostly I really dislike them.
So that leaves Winter Chalet, Clock Aquarium, and LEGO Typewriter. I love the Chalet and voted for the Aquarium.
I also tend to like recreations of real things so I'm partial to the Huascar and Toronto Rocket Subway Train.
The Planet Express ship from Futurama, why not?
Now, if they really want to shut up and take my money, LEGO needs to include the parts to build the hot rod Bessie version from 2-D Blacktop, and include all Planet Express employees - that includes Scruffy - and Nibbler.
I only want Seinfeld. And there is no way they say it doesn’t fit brand value.
Zelda would be cool for new prints, but I’ve never played the game And an unfamiliar with the characters or story.
This round is meh...
I'd love the Home Alone set but I'm rooting for Futurama.
I could also see the Seinfeld one happening as it would fit with The Big Bang Theory and Friends sets.
The Rocket looks great. I'm tired of sets based on TV shows, but they sell well.
@AlvaroRM1995:
I really want Bessie to get approved, but fear that the color scheme will make that unlikely. I'm just not sure enough sand-green parts have ever been made at one time to make this feasible without blowing the Ideas part budget for the entire year. The Awesome Express livery would be much easier to pull off (being primarily red), to the point that I long ago decided that if I were to ever try to build Bessie myself, I'd go with that iteration over the Planet Express livery.
As for the other part, I'm sure they are very aware of both sides of that equation. I think Sesame Street will be the seventh based off a TV series, but there are also five based on feature films, and one based on a short film. The stuff keeps getting approved because it's very popular, hence why many of the early Cuusoo sets sold out in under a month but the BttF DeLorean was still available a year after release and even led to two Dimensions sets. However, they also realize that their mandate was not to be a way to incorporate licenses that can't really fill out a full theme, so I believe they put a restriction on what percentage of approved sets can be based on an existing IP, so they have to also make sure to approve stuff like the Treehouse and the Leviathan.
IMHO, Seinfeld does not have enough global appeal to succeed. Personally, I dislike the show extremely. Really dislike.
Would there be licensing issues with the Futurama set?
I really like the typewriter, but I think the audience would be too small. But I want it to get approved so I can by it.
I'm a big fan of the aquarium set.
