It was last June that LEGO announced that it would be releasing Minions sets this year and since then we've been waiting patiently to get a glimpse of Gru's yellow workers. The wait is over. Five sets have just been revealed ahead of the New York toy fair: four minifig sets and one larger scale brick-built minion set.

You'll find all the details after the break.

75546 Minions in Gru’s Lab

Ready to get inventive with the LEGO Minions in Gru’s Lab set? The Minions have helped to transform Gru’s basement into a laboratory. Now they’re preparing to have some fun. Watch them create mischief as they slide into the bananas and test out a vehicle on the ramp. See if they can make a vehicle crash into the fence!

  • Kids who love Minions movies and Minion Toys will enjoy this LEGO Minions in Gru’s Lab playset (75546). This Minions toy set is an ideal birthday present for kids aged 4 and up.
  • Minions fans can have lots of fun recreating scenes from the Minions: The Rise of Gru movie. With Kevin and Otto Minion toy figures, there’s plenty of opportunity for role play after the model is built.
  • Lots of fun features make this an awesome playset for creative fun. Kids can make the Minions slide into the basement, test the car on the ramp, or use the trigger on the back of the washing machine to make it turn.
  • This set makes a great birthday present. LEGO 4+ sets are a fun way for kids to learn to build, boosting confidence with simple building steps.
  • This lab toy building set with Minion figures measures over 3” (8cm) high, 6” (17cm) wide and 5” (13cm) deep, making it the perfect size for kids who love to role-play with Minion toys.

75547 Minion Pilot in Training

Take to the skies with LEGO Minions Bob and Stuart. They’re on a mission to save Gru and are piloting a plane for the daring rescue. Stuart is the pilot and Bob is a flight attendant in the passenger cabin, so it’s sure to be a bumpy ride. Watch out – an accident-prone Minion might fall into the toilet. And don’t forget to find the fart blaster for extra fun!

  • A fun Minions toy plane building set (75547), featuring Stuart (in pilot outfit) and Bob LEGO figures. Kids can build the plane, then recreate thrilling scenes from the Minions: The Rise of Gru movie.
  • There’s lots to discover in this fun toy set. Minions fans will love the Bob and Stuart LEGO figures and the cool accessories for creative play – including a banana, hotdog, peanut bag, suitcase and fart blaster!
  • Creative fun is easy with this toy playset. The detachable roof lets kids explore the plane along with the Minions. Put Stuart in the cockpit or let Bob’s sweet and subversive nature play out in the passenger cabin.
  • This set is a great choice for kids aged 4 and up. And with Instructions PLUS, learning to build is even more fun.
  • This buildable plane set with Minion figures measures over 4” (11cm) high, 9” (24cm) long and 9” (24cm) wide, making it the perfect size for kids who love to play with toy planes.

75549 Unstoppable Bike Chase

The chase is on! Help Gru and the Minions protect the zodiac stone from the villains who want it back. They’ll need to be speedy to outwit the evildoers. Luckily there’s a banana to throw as they ride along. Gru’s taking control of the LEGO Minions Unstoppable Bike Chase, with Bob helping up front. Meanwhile, Stuart’s enjoying a thrilling ride as he’s dragged along on the rocket skates.

  • There are lots of ways to play with this fun set. Gru’s on a mission and kids can help by putting the Minions on the front of the bike, pulling them along on the rocket skates, or giving them a toy banana treat.
  • An action-packed Minions toy motorbike building set (75549), featuring Gru, Stuart and Bob toy figures. Kids can enjoy full-speed action as they role-play epic scenes from the Minions: The Rise of Gru movie.
  • Role play is easy with this toy motorbike set. With 3 figures, including the exclusive Gru LEGO minifigure, only available in this set, kids will love making up their own Minion stories.

75550 Minions Kung Fu Battle

Join the Minions for kung fu training and celebrations at the LEGO Minions Kung Fu Battle. First the Minions practice kung fu moves using the weapon rack and rotating wooden dummy. Then they can parade with the Chinese dragon before admiring the pretend ‘fireworks’ stud shooters that fire from the top of the temple. Watch out for the dramatic reveal as Otto appears out of the temple.

  • Bring the excitement of Chinese New Year to any home for young Minions fans. They’ll have lots of fun building this toy temple, ready to recreate scenes from the Minions: The Rise of Gru movie.
  • Play starts right away with the 3 LEGO Minion figures. This set (75550) includes Kevin and Stuart Minion toy figures in kung fu outfits, plus an Otto figure.
  • Kids can help the Minions perfect their kung fu skills with the weapon rack and rotating training dummy, before launching ‘fireworks’ from the top of the temple while the Minions carry the colorful Chinese dragon toy.
  • Looking for a birthday present, or holiday gift for a Minions fan aged 6 and up? This is a great choice. Ideal for creative fun, it’s an awesome gift for kids who love building toys and Minion stories.
  • The toy temple measures over 6” (17cm) high, 5” (13cm) wide and 10” (26cm) deep, making it perfect for creative play.

75551 Brick-Built Minions and Their Lair

Want to step inside the unpredictable world of the Minions? Well, now you can! Build your favorite Minion then turn it around to reveal their room. Check out the figure version of each character. Put them inside the room to explore the mischievous personality of each Minion. Create inventions with Kevin in the lab or pop Stuart in his bedroom. Then rebuild Kevin into Bob with his kung fu playset.

  • A creative building set that lets Minions fans build their favorite Minion character. Kids can build both Kevin and Stuart, and then rebuild Kevin into Bob.
  • Once the character is built, the fun goes on. Kids will love seeing the eyes turn. Then they can explore the intricate room playset inside, using the fun accessories to create their own Minion stories.
  • Inspired by the Minions: The Rise of Gru movie, kids can explore kung fu with Bob, build inventions with Kevin or let Stuart take a nap in his bedroom.
  • Makes a great birthday present for kids aged 8 and up who love Minions toys. After playing with their creation, kids will love putting their models on display.
  • Each brick-built LEGO Minion measures over 3” (9cm) long and 4” (11cm) wide. Kevin is over 5” (15cm) tall, Stuart is 5” (14cm) tall and Bob is 4” (12cm) tall, making them ideal for play and display.

75551 models look awesome.

By in Hong Kong,

Sets look pretty cute. I liked Despicable Me 1 and 2 well enough and hated Minions, so i would not call myself a super fan, but those are some nice sets. Like the lab and the temple in particular

Gravatar
By in United States,

So who does Minions better, Lego or Mega?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Everyday we stray further from god.

Though I do like that Kung-Fu battle set, it's like a cute 4+ Chinese New Year set

They look pretty dang good for what they are

indeed

Oh dear... Well, I guess they don't look too bad.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

How come these are proper sets, but Incredibles 2, a franchise loved by kids and adults alike, are relegated to Juniors?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

75550 - Has there ever been a set with a greater variety of banana colours?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, that kung fu battle set really looks like a normal CNY set just with minions in it. These figures are pretty cool, not as demonic as the Trolls, but Gru looks wrong without a nose. The brickbuilt minions are pretty cool!

Gravatar
By in United States,

"Fart cannon"? I cannot unsee that.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’m certainly not going to get any, but I must admit these actually look pretty good for what they are. Without doubt more appealing than the Trolls sets

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No appearance by the Girls, no interest to me xD

I mean, they certainly don't look terrible, by any means! But for me, it's the human characters who make the Despicable Me franchise, not the minions. If we had a set based around Margo, Edith and Agnes, you can guarantee I'd be sold right away!

As it is, though... yeah, these are nice enough, but they're not for me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the brick built minions, bit disappointing that you can only build 2/3 at a time though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

75550 Minions Kung Fu Battle is being built and put right into my Chinese New Year display. I also really want the set with Gru. Thanks for the news!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice reuse of parts from the Chinese New Year sets. I’m on the fence. Have to see them in person I guess.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Were is Gru? And who is that random mechanic figure?
...
Wait, HE is supposed to be Gru?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

These have exceeded my expectations massively, all of them look fantastic.

Far better than the Trolls and Angry Brid themes combined, these sets are epic love every single one of them. Definitely going to try complete this theme.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hate to say this, but the Megabloks Despicable Me sets were better then these.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

75550 is the only one that has me interested... meh...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@BionicleJedi, yeah, I'd like to see those set w/the girls, especially in their Girl Scout-like outfits, based on Despicable Me 1. As this movie is based on Gru being a child himself the girls have not come into existence yet, so if they appeared in these sets they'd cause a rift in the time-line and would slowly disappear Back to the Future style. Disappearing LEGO is not good value : ) As this movie is based on Gru being a child, why does he have adult legs? At least give him the medium length legs which still allow figs to sit. For my nearly final random thought, as an adult these sets are surprisingly good, nothing I'd spend much money on other than if on deep discount for parts, but especially the Minions look much better than I was expecting. Now, my inner Minion says: "Red BA-NA-NA? Gold BA-NA-NA! Oooohh..."

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Perfect for the target audience!

I love buildable figures so i will most likely get 75551. Also 75550 will fit perfectly with the Chinese New Year sets. 75547 almost looks like a LEGO knock-off though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Builds look pretty cool but as for the Minions themselves, I think Mega did them a bit better

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow I actually love most of these

Why do I love most of these

The biggest two will likely be purchased by me !!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks fine. I like the kung-fu battle. It does work well with the Chinese New Year sets.
They seem to have used different molds for the minifigs. Not sure why.
The plane is cute.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wish lego would of started this theme when the yellow fellas took on scarlett overkill and balthazar Bratt, love these especially the king fu face off and the brick built Kevin & Bob lol...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

2 Awesome new lego themes in two days!! :O

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Angry Birds Movie sets were still better in my opinion

Gravatar
By in United States,

Even as a fan of the Minions since the first Despicable Me film, this theme makes me question Lego's marketing direction even more. Even as a LEGO fan, I have quite a few of the MEGA Minions all over the place. I will be more than happy to add actual LEGO Minions to that shelf.

The Minions themselves look pretty good. They seem to use a simlar design to the old Mega Construx Minions, but without the specialized head/body piece--while still retaining the slip-on goggles for eyes.

Gru is the real problem--he looks like just some generic background character--not like Gru at all. Gru should've been a specialized big-fig--given the Minions are minifig sized.

Gravatar
By in United States,

No Gru minifig in this first wave?

Gravatar
By in United States,

As for the sets, the only one I am really enthusiastic about is 75551. The brick-built Minions look great--and they also serve as quarters for the Minion figs included. 75550 is gorgeous as well. Unlike the Chinese New Year sets, I will probably be able to find that one locally.

The rest are a mixed bag. 75546 is a decent little viginette capturing the Minons at their finest. However--it is obvious that it is a 4+ set. The plane in 75547, well, it's one of the worst planes LEGO has done outside of Jack Stone. Too-short wings and no panes in the windows. 75549--hard to believe the minifig is supposed to be Gru. It looks like he just uses a generic City print on a nougat head. Compared to the trailer on IMDB, the bike doesn't look right.

For the most part, I will be buying the Minions on Bricklink. 75550, 75551, and 75546 will be coming home with me; as well as the eventual polybag.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Not into Minions (between Minions TRoG and Trolls WT I'd watch the latter) but these are so cute!

Agreed with @LegoSolo77, it doesn't seem right for Gru to have adult legs, but I guess teen legs are still too elusive yet.

Gravatar
By in United States,

75551 is cool. Wouldn't mind having that. Lots of yellow pieces. My sons would enjoy this.

But let's talk about Gru. If that's a minifig of Gru, he looks completely not like him. Terrible. My 9 year old says he looks like Paul McCartney! The character is distinct, and this minifig is not.

That is absolutely amazing!!!

Also, am I the only one that thinks the kung fu suits make them look naked?!?!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd forgotten about these and kind of wish TLG had too...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I love 75551, those are great sculptures and will definitely be going on one of my shelves. I'm also intrigued by the new piece(s) in the Minion mini-figures - are the heads just regular 2x2 dome bricks with a new part slotted over to let the eyes be attached, or is the entire head a new snot brick?

Both 75546 Minions in Gru’s Lab and 75547 Minion Pilot in Training are 4+ sets as per the description.

Gravatar

The king fu battle does look good, I must admit. Some good sets for smaller kids, but not for me

I see 4: yellow, red, tan, and gold. Am I missing any others?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll definitely check these out. 75551 looks to be about 1/3 the size of the Mega Blok build-a-minion set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pouting a bit here ... no sight of the Minion's lairs in the back of the big Minion figures!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

So is that 3 or 4 different colors of banana in one set? Red, yellow, gold, and maybe tan?

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Oh no, the Minions now have giant robots of themselves!!! We are doomed, doomed!!!!
These look fun but we would have preferred Sonic sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was worried that the minifigs from this line might end up cursed, but they're actually super adorable! Hopefully there's a polybag or something sometime down the line to mass them.

Based on the trailer I was *really* hoping for a set based on the crab villain's mech. It had such a sweet design, like most of the franchise's vehicles. I also wonder if we get more general Despicable Me sets if they'll make Gru's car from the original?

Can't wait to see what dumb and cursed memes Facebook moms make out of these.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe it’s my wokeness, but the squinty eyes in the kung fu set seem a tad racist?

I’ll pass on the sets in general. If these came out when they were popular, I’d pick them up. They are a bit played now.

Why they look racist when they are squinting? You haven't squinted your eyes when you are figthing and reacting Kun Fu movies? The Despicable Me series has always been about satire (Ronald Reagan is even spotted in the Villian meeting in the first Minions movie and there is literally a tank with the US white star as well as a multitude of different world villains?
Edit: the upcoming film has a Nun as one of the villains interviewing Gru.

Absolutely not.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Never understood what made the minions so popular. The real star of Despicable Me was Gru all the way, and then the other human characters. The minions were a good idea as... minions, but they can't hold their own as main characters.

So these sets are a bit disappointing. It's like they jumped on the bandwagon 4 movies too late, when their fame has eroded a bit too. I had been expecting a bit more of the new themes of 2020, but that's not an amazing start.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I don’t know which one is Kevin and which one is Bob.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like it. Think I’ll probably just get the last one with the models but I’m actually pleased how these turned out

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I really like that they kept them simple. Like, these will all make great gifts for the kids in your life. While I personally love all of the Trolls sets (like, completely freaking adore them), many of them feel just a bit too complex for little kids, whom I'd imagine were the target audience. I hesitate to give them as gifts for fear of annoying their parents.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Is anyone else wondering whether or not we are getting more scooby doo sets because theres a new scooby animated movie coming out!!

I think lego should of carried that theme on and added wacky races and yogi bear to the they're universe...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

....... errrrrr okay????
>.< looks like Lego too Mega Blocks Minions!!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is going to lead to some serious feel-hunting trouble when LEGO releases the minions as a Collectable Minifigure wave. You know it's going to happen.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lots of unique recolors of existing pieces, which is exciting. I'm just really perplexed that they landed on that generic design for Gru - I guess he's so oddly shaped that he doesn't translate to minifigures well at all.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The minions look super similar to the mega blok sets. The only one that mildly interests me is 75549, and 75550...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not for me, I'll pass on these. There's just no appeal here. They seem a bit to junior for my taste.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These sets turned out much better than I expected. They aren't for everyone, but I think those who are interested will like what they are getting.

Gravatar
By in United States,

haven't seen any of the films etc. with these things but pretty nice sets. guess if i pick up one (or two) then i'll have to watch and see what i've gotten myself into hahaha

Gravatar
By in Germany,

While I don't mind these sets I just don't get why LEGO does a complete rehash of what MegaBloks / Mega Construx has done years ago. I have got both of those Build-a-Minion sets plus several others frome that theme and they are great. Sure, the quality is slightly lower than LEGO or Cobi, but at least you got proper figures of Gru, the Girls, Lucy etc.
Might buy some of these sets when they get massively discounted, but am in absolutely no hurry.

And @TomKazutara: you can find some of what you are looking for in Flörsheim ;-)
Nuff said.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The marketing blurb states that the respective sets are for those 4+ 6+ and 8+ i.e. products squarely marketed at kids, or those who are kids at heart.

With that in mind I see a bunch of fun sets, that bring a smile to my face, even if they won’t necessarily result in a purchase. But they’re joyous little creations designed to make people happy. Who can complain at that in the harsh world we find ourselves living in?

If they’re not your thing, then fine - there are plenty of other sets more attuned to the older fan.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What piece are they using to make the brick build minion's one eye? Is that a new piece? I can't see any studs. ??

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love the large brick built ones, other ones are ok. Although it does make me wonder if this will lead to other Universal/Illumination themes.

Gravatar
By in Croatia,

This is easily one of the worst themes we have gotten in a while. As much as I don't like Trolls either, that theme is MILES better than this theme!

Honestly, the Mega Blocks sets looked a lot better than those.

My problem with Lego's marketing direction in a nutshell. Lego's "bread and butter" themes have been pushed aside for an unending torrent of new licenses, and in many cases, the sets look half-baked and have sold poorly.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

The chinese one is great but THAT PRICE. 45EURO????
I actualy LOVE how they use printed tiles for eyes.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This really looks like Megablocks :/

Gravatar
By in United States,

Insofar as I'm not a big fan of licensed themes, these don't do much for me. That said, I am excited to see the steep elevation roller coaster track that is being used in the Gru's Lab set. It looks a bit different than the one that has thus far been exclusive to the 10261 Roller Coaster (it has a more curved incline) so I'm not sure if its the same one and may actually be a new element, but I'm excited about it nonetheless. Roller coaster track at a low price point is always welcome.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

That aeroplane looks very early 90’s. The temple could fit in city as well as in Ninjago. The washing machine looks nice, printed eyes too. But the big Minions are the best, especially when opened up from the back.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This made me very upset. Just more stupid, stupid, overpriced license. As usual the designers do their best to make good-looking models, but Minions license? Seriously?

I counted the length and height changes, and looks to me it's the exact same slope rail, 16 studs long 6 bricks height difference.

Rail starts 2 plates from the ground and goes up 6 bricks , goes across the 8x8 grey plate, then 6 studs of blue and then 2 studs via the red slope.

Mega, by a wide margin.

Gravatar

Better than Trolls for one thing. This aren't as bad as I thought. Hopefully, this will be worth LEGO's investment, unlike some themes...

Gravatar
By in United States,

For those wondering why the kids aren't in these sets . . . they are based on the new movie which is a prequel that shows the story of Gru's early life. And yes, that is a young Gru in the "Unstoppable Bike Chase" . . . it says so right in the description.

Gravatar

@Emilyjl said:
"This movie takes places before the girls were around"

Yeah, that's true. I just think it would have been nice for the wave to have included a one-off set based on the first movie, the one that started it all. I've seen all the DM / Minions movies so far, but none of the rest have won me over in the way the original did; the girls were the real stars of the show, imo, but they've been sidelined in favour of the minions ever since.

It's just... personal wishful thinking, I guess xD

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not my cup of tea, but Minions make fantastic looking minifigs.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Guess these could've been worse, but they could've been better too.

Gru's Lab: While it has some nice details (particularly the washing machine), it's overall very empty - shouldn't it at the very least have a workbench and some more tools, not to mention a Gru figure? And seriously, ONE measly track piece, what's the play value in that? We really need an affordable set/parts pack containing at least one of each (including the elusive middle-slope one).

Plane: Pretty meh. While I understand it's a 4+ set, I still think making the wings and entire bottom a single piece is bad. The rear end is generally poorly shaped, the tail rudder a little small and the side fins downright pathetic. The pilot has no hat (guess it blew out the open windows).

Bike: Another oversized motorcycle, but the main problem is how Gru doesn't look like Gru at all.

Kung-fu: Nice colors and parts, ignoring the Minions it could be used as an add-on to Ninjago and the Chinese New Year sets.

Brick-built Minions: If you absolutely WANT giant Minions on your desk I guess these are as good as any, even if they looks a tad square. Am I the only one who thinks their hands looks like film cameras? The playset interiors seems like a neat idea, aren't there any pictures of this?

Gravatar

Kids will love these

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@cody6268: I mean, in this day and age I think there's a stronger case to be made that City, Creator, Classic, Friends, and Ninjago are LEGO's "bread and butter" than themes like Castle, Pirates, or Space.

It's not as though a theme having once been crucially important to LEGO's success means it always will be. Even Bionicle, a theme that was monumentally successful in the early 2000s, has gotten just as many years' worth of sets as Pirates has. For that matter, Ninjago has already surpassed the Pirates theme's original eight-year run, and Friends is on track to do the same.

I suspect themes like Castle, Pirates, and Space WILL show up again in the future, since LEGO is known to periodically recycle theme categories/genres. That includes not just those most traditional categories, but also others like underwater, underground, secret agents, "spooky", dinosaurs, etc. But they aren't somehow due special treatment just for being old.

Anyway, these sets look very fun and colorful! Definitely excited to see what uses the folks at New Elementary might find for some of the pieces we can see here, especially since it looks like even the goggled Minions have tiles for eyes, presumably attached to sideways-facing studs.

And the hairs of the tall minion (forget his name) could be a big improvement for future portrayals of Olaf from Frozen, as well as any number of other cartoon characters with sprig-like hair. They also look like they might have the same connectors as flower stems, in which case they could be great as a plant element in future sets!

Thankfully, hair pieces rarely seem to be IP locked unless they're extremely specific like Leia's twin buns or Queen Amidala's elaborate headdress, so I certainly expect ones from this theme to show up again in the future.

The eyes of those brick-built minions pique my curiosity as well. If the eye patterned parts in the center are removable, they could be great as people-sized pipes like the ones in the Mario games. And it's good to see macaronis in yellow make a comeback, since they're so useful for… well, macaroni!

I saw the trailer for this new movie, and am glad that Gru will have a role in this one, though his top-heavy design with an orb-like torso and skinny legs isn't very well suited to portrayal as a traditional minifigure. If this license does well enough, I hope that we might see future sets featuring characters and subjects from some of the other Despicable Me and Minions films.

I really ought to try and see more of these movies. I've only seen the first Despicable Me, and expect I'd enjoy the rest, even if they haven't impressive enough to bother going to see in theaters. Illumination has a real talent for bringing exaggerated, slapstick-heavy animation along the lines of classic cartoons (Coyote and Roadrunner, Tom & Jerry, Rocky & Bullwinkle, etc) into theatrical-quality CGI. I always love to see animation studios push their own personal styles like that instead of trying to be a carbon copy of Pixar.

By in Australia,

These are better than I thought. I really like the Kung fu and the Buildable figures, but the rest I can skip. Gru looks just awful.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That Gru minifig is...not good. It looks like any old fig from a City set. Really needs his distinctive nose printed at least.

Oh, man. Rocky & Bullwinkle (along with its associated segments like Peabody's Improbable History and Fractured Fairy tales) was the best, besides maybe some classic Looney Tunes.
But I would kill for a Dudley Do-right set!

By in United States,

Where's the purple minion? I guess Ill steal some Troll hair and mock one up.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nah...a definite pass for me. I might pick up one or two of the figs on BrickLink, but that's it.

Mega Construx used to have original themes, but now everything the make is licensed. I would hate for the same to happen to Lego. At this rate the only non-licensed sets are going to be Ninjago, City, Creator and Technic.

Yaaaaaaaaaaassssssss!!! You just made me so happy. If LEGO never makes a Dudley Doright set I may die. That would technically be Brendan Frazier’s first fig right? Since he played him in the film. Also those characters are conducive to LEGO form, unlike Gru.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

But that dojo one is on point and plus I expected these to suck

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like ‘em. That Gru set is rather disappointing though. Definitely getting the Kung Fu set, it’ll obviously pair well with CNY sets. And the brick built Minions are great.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

5 different colors of Banana in the Kung Fu set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They look great.

Prices I must know.

Prices are $20, $30, $20, $40 and supposedly 50 Euro which I'd guess would be $60 because it has nearly 900 pieces.

Gravatar
By in United States,

why would you curse all of humanity with the monstrosities. the figures dont even look lego.

No, no, no. NOT Brendan Frazier. I'm only a fan of the original, horribly animated yet irresistibly charming cartoon. I refuse to recognize that they made a live-action hollywood movie of Dudley. Or Boris & Natasha. Or Yogi Bear. Or any number of other things they should just leave alone and stop trying to ruin because they have no new ideas of their own.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love the theme, though the figures look bit odd. Looking forward to that "Brick Built Minions and their lair" set

Gravatar
By in United States,

Perhaps Lego has decided not to use special head molds for human or humanoid characters, regardless of the character's appearance. That's the only way I can explain this Gru figure. Or the Flintstones figures. Or the most recent Toy Story figures.

@CarolinaOnMyMind:

I would usually agree with you, but in this case, Brendan Frazier vs. Alfred Molina is absolutely amazing. It captured the corniness of the cartoon, but without trying to be the exact same thing. It’s actually pretty great. I do agree that the Boris and Natasha movie was maybe the worst idea in the long sad history of bad ideas. All that said, the cartoon will always be better, but the live action Dudley Doright is actually the exception to the general rule that live action adaptations of classic cartoons are bad.

By in Canada,

As much as I want to like the theme I just can't help comparing the minions with the Megabloks version and those are much better in my opinion. Maybe I'll like these better when I see them in person, we'll see. The Gru minifigure doesn't do much for the theme either, the prominent nose would have required a custom molded head which would have looked much much better. The design they came up with just doesn't resemble the actual character.

On the positive side...yes, red bananas!

By in United States,

oh no

By in Singapore,

I try not to be so skeptical on the LEGO planes, but that plane is seriously out of proportion. As I am an aviation enthusiast, I already think the LEGO city planes are a little off. The minions plane is even worse. The horizontal stabilizer and the tail are extremely tiny for it's size and the nose is also a really awkward shape. I hope LEGO will either spend a little more time designing a brick built nose, or make an entirely new mould for planes in the future.

By in United States,

I know nothing about minions but these are fantastic!

Gravatar
By in United States,

What is the piece used for Kevin(?) Minion’s hair on 75546 and 75550. It looks like a new stalk mold? So dope to get new foliage pieces!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Cooliocdawg
Fair enough. I might give it a shot on your recommendation. But my expectations are very low.

Gravatar
By in United States,

looks like we live in an age where LEGO is taking notes from mega bloks and not the other way around...
gru doesn't quite look like gru and it's odd that he has full legs in order to be taller than the minions
I also hate the 3x3 minion

Gravatar
By in United States,

Don't know if it's been said before, but I really think that gru is not gru without his nose. in the minifigure, it just loses something without it. also the minions are done how I thought, however they look really different then I expected.

Lots of agreement with that already. A quick CTRL+F or Find on Page search for ‘gru’ reveals that it has been said several times in the thread.

Kevin is tall and thin. Bob is small and round with eyes of different colors. And Stuart has the single eye. Otto is new to me -- must be in the new movie a lot.

That’s probably for the best. When I first watched it, I expected to to be terrible. It was actually pretty great, but if I had gone in expecting a masterpiece, I would have hated it.

That's two out of the five sets in the wave. Incredibles didn't have any regular sets.

@phi13: In most cases, yeah, that seems to be how they're approaching things nowadays. And I feel like specialized head molds would be just as divisive, judging from the reactions a lot of AFOLs had to the specialized head molds for The Simpsons, Powerpuff Girls, and 2010 Toy Story sets. Even this year's Trolls minifigures have invoked a lot of complaints that they "barely look like LEGO".

Additionally, LEGO also tends to be stricter than they used to be about adhering to conventional minifigure design standards for human characters, regardless of the visual language of the source material. Previously, they often opted for cartoonier styles that evoked the source material in many of their animation-based licensed sets.

Just compare the facial features from the pre-2010s Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars: The Clone Wars minifigures with the post-2010s Star Wars: Rebels, Scooby-Doo, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles minifigures.

About 3 years too late, as is tradition for LEGO.
