ARGHHH ME HEARTIES! EXPLORE AN EPIC SHIPWRECK WITH THE NEW LEGO IDEAS PIRATES OF BARRACUDA BAY

The LEGO Group has announced the latest LEGO Ideas set, bringing back memories of the beloved LEGO Pirates theme.

[24th March 2020] Become a pirate with this brand-new LEGO Ideas set, inspired by the 1989 Black Seas Barracuda pirate ship model. Adventurers can now explore the island and the wreckage of Captain Redbeard’s famous ship, which was lost at sea over 30 years ago.

The new LEGO Ideas Pirates of Barracuda Bay set has been created based on a submission to the LEGO Ideas platform by fan designer Pablo Sánchez Jiménez, who has a passion for all things pirate and was inspired after building LEGO brick models with his dad when he was young. The concept behind the LEGO IDEAS Pirates of Barracuda Bay set reached the 10,000-supporter milestone in just 25 days - making it one of the quickest sets to hit the target.

With 2,545-pieces in total, the model contains everything a pirate or LEGO fan needs to create the ultimate shipwreck – including a captain’s quarters, food store and supply dock. LEGO builders can even uncover buried treasure on the island by removing parts of the ship to explore new areas and create new stories.

This set also contains 8 Minifigures all based on pirate characters from the classic pirate lines, including the iconic Captain Redbeard, Lady Anchor, Robin Loot and the twins, Port and Starboard, as well as 3 other pirates and 2 skeleton figures and various animals to discover on the island.

When builders tire of being stranded at sea, the island can also be reassembled to create Captain Redbeard’s legendary ship, the Black Seas Barracuda. Rebuild the ship to launch a rescue mission to take the ship’s crew back to safety and find the buried treasure.

The LEGO Ideas Pirates of Barracuda Bay set measures over 23” (59cm) high, 25” (64cm) wide and 12” (32cm) deep and is sure to catch the eye whether proudly displayed or placed amongst other LEGO Pirate sets.

You will find more images on the set details page.

What do you think of it? Are you happy that it has deviated significantly from the original submission?

We'll be publishing our review as soon as it's finished!

Duude that's amazing

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Is this... a 2-in-1 Ideas set? With actual sails? And properly nostalgic box art (even though outside of 6254 I have little nostalgia for Pirates)? And, I guess, not a completely outlandish price tag given the 2-in-1 aspect, how extensive the main model appears, and the fact alone that the rebuild is a Black Seas Barracuda?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ok, that’s cool.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Love it!!!

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

This Ideas set is going to be the best one yet!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Boy, this looks gorgeous! This is easily in my top 3 sets of 2020!

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Best Idea set ever! Barracuda Bay! The designers took the original idea and moved it even futher! I love retro sets. I really want this!

Oh gods!

Arrrrrrr!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s beautiful! Different from the original submission, sure, but it’s a love letter to the classic Pirate theme.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

This. Is. Beautiful. Thank you lego!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

How many people are going to opt for the ship build?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll take two.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wow, this looks amazing!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I might buy this on day 1, especially if the Easter Egg GWP is still around… Did not expect the 2-in-1 build, but it's all right. I preferred the original submission (especially all the little details), but I knew its footprint (and raised baseplate) was too big for it to become a real set.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

That is tempting.

Is it me or is there a lot of continuity, here, between the original (and classic) Black Seas Barracuda, and this set?

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Not interested in this set until this reveal, it surely deviates from the original submission but it was for the best.
Edit: d--- it LEGO, we need those funds for the current pandemic.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well there goes $200.

I hoped it would be good, it looks great!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

That's what I was waiting for!
Super super super.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Gorgeous. Hits the nostalgia in all the right places.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wowwwww. It's the 90s again and I'm at Kmart. This set is incredible.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Everything about this set is extremely cool. I love everything about it. Even the packaging! :)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Afraid this is an April Joke :-o

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

My first IDEAS set for sure, best set of 2020 by a longshot.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The set can turn into the pirate ship + island.
Mind = blown.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^No joke. Newelementary.com and Brothers-brick.com have reviews up already.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Holy sh*t!! This looks amazing! The original Ideas design was very nice, but this is wild. I'm afraid I'll need to buy 2 of these sets

Gravatar
By in United States,

OMG I love this! So cool! Nostalgic, classic, creative and innovative all rolled into one. Fantastic job LEGO!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is an example of a perfect lego set. Great price, great figs, nostalgia to the max. The way it separates into the Black Sea Barracuda is insane. It’s absolute perfection. I’m speechless. 10/10. This is what lego is all about.

Gravatar
By in United States,

glad i didn't go nuts on the current double VIP points, now i can "justify" buying this on day 1

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Sorry to buck the trend but for me this is disappointing...I much prefer the original submission. Reading the above comments it seems that I'm in the minority. This was originally a must buy when I saw the original, now I think I may have saved $300 instead....

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

This is spectacular news. The new Barracuda has a gorgeous shape. I also love the ruined Islanders statue on the right side of the model.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I literally screamed when I saw that it can be built into the seaworthy ship!!! Aaaaaaaarrrrghhhhhh!!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Would buy for the Black Sea Barracuda alone, but I wish they had some instructions to rebuild the leftover pieces into something.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I think we will all agree this one IS amazing

Gravatar
By in United States,

Incredible. And I wasn't even a huge fan of the Pirates theme as a kid. But this looks amazing. And the fact that it can be rebuilt as a full-fledged a boat is just the icing on the cake.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

What a fantastic set!

I was very underwhelmed when it was announced as the winner last year. Little did we know what Lego had up their sleeve!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Ok, i am SERIOUSLY impressed right now. The original submission was great, but this.... this just takes the cake.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They absolutely killed it. I'm so tempted to get two and have both displays set up.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This completes me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

WOW, seriously can't say anything else but just WOW, its a beauty.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks fantastic. I love the 2 in 1 function which makes it so much more useful.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

100% getting this, and probably filling it with ghost pirates.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Baring a new OT Millennium Falcon release I’ll definitely be getting this. So cool!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

This might just be the best Lego set of the modern era. If they cheapen it with stickers I'll be extremely annoyed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Who said classic themes are dead?! My head just literally exploded

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It’s ok and may end up buying at some point, but I much prefer the style of the original submission and that’s what I voted for. They should have probably just rebooted the Pirates theme separately from Ideas

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Impressive!
Thank you for the good news Lego in these rather dark times.
Maybe a fort turning into an imperial flagship for next year ...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is awesome on Soooooo many levels,
And the minifigs are so cool so they Arraaaghh lol..

Hope it does well!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is amazing. I absolutely love it.

The only problem is that it is SO different from the proposed version. The original had a much more realistic look. (Like the Fishing Store) The final looks like the cartoon version.

Still highly satisfied.

it's not a "2 in 1", the set disassembles into the ship, leaving the island intact!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Well, I'm sold !
I would have loved something much closer to the original submission and this set as a different one (let's face it, apart from the island, they don't have much in common...).
But on its own, it's definitely a fantastic set with a great core idea (rebuildable shipwreck) and realisation.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Going to opt for that pirate ship build all day long here. It looks stunning. Would almost rather have had the set just be the ship itself. The island configuration looks a little too messy for my tastes but that pirate ship is just the best thing ever

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Oh, my god, I had no idea this was happening! And holy crap - to see not only is it a shipwreck set based on such a classic, but it's ALSO able to be assembled as a re-imagining of the Barracuda as well?! This set is truly inspired.

What a beautiful and loving homage to a set that is so beloved!

Gravatar
By in France,

this is going to sail off the shelves !!!

awesome

Gravatar
By in United States,

Be still, my beating heart. Just breathtaking.

Gravatar
By in France,

Oh my that's way better than the original submission o_O

Gravatar
By in United States,

Getting this beauty as soon as I can!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I have very fond memories of the 2009 Pirates theme and building Brickbeard's Bounty, years later I sold the sets with no regrets because I was saving up for the UCS Millennium Falcon but now I think I might buy this set as a way to commerorate my memories from that time. It's pretty amazing how this set will probably mean the same to fellow collector's who remember the very first Pirates theme.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Looks wonderful! A clever compromise to the original submission which was brilliantly designed but would make it expensive. So glad to see a return of a great Lego theme. Judging from the responses this will be a sales succes and could motivate Lego for similar projects.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Omg! Only the box art makes it worth buying! I’m totally in love! THANK YOU LEGO! <3

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Yay! A certain day one (or just past midnight) order regardless of if for Easter break or continued Covid home office mode.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

OMG. OMG!!!! I am going to get it first day launch!!!

and the most important question is, where is my monkey and parrot? did i miss it somewhere, i mean i could possibly miss it as i am not in my right mind right now (too EXCITED ahhhh)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

People didn’t want another space-themed Ideas set, and they wanted more Classic themes to return.

LEGO is listening.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

This. Could. Not. Be. Any. Better.

Gravatar
By in Lithuania,

Shut up and take my money!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The original IDEAS submission was a nice build, but could have been a little dull on the shelf (no offense to the creator, who did a really good job with it). While I think this set is perhaps a little less cohesive, I'm SO glad that they chose to go the route they did! The ship looks astounding, and even in wrecked form, the whole set just looks like fun! A definite purchase!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Looks cool, but I have the original ship (and fond childhood memories of it); it feels like I would be buying the same set again... I guess I would have liked a different aesthetic so it would stand out more between my old pirate sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love it! Very nice!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

WOW!
I wonder if having all the brand stores closed will give a bit more stock for online orders, as this is bound to be plundered into Back Order very quickly!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can just imagine how this would happen on LEGO Masters:

Wil Arnett: Stop the clock! Hands down! Okay builders. We're going to change the goal of today's build a little bit. Now, instead of just building a vehicle, we want you to modify it so that it looks like a wrecked version of itself, but still make it able to be reassembled into the original vehicle.

Jamie (to camera): This is going to be a challenge for our builders because they need to make the components strong but still able to be easily assembled into the vehicle and broken down into the wreck.

Amy (also to camera): Boone and Mark have started off with a pirate ship and created an island as background scenery already. I am really looking forward to what they come up with in the second half of this challenge!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Great work from LEGO! This simply made my happy, in those harsh days. Feeling like its 1989 again :) As a huge clasic lego pirates fun I was afraid how this set will look like, they made it perfect. Will buy at least two of those. Hope to see more big sets based on classic themes in the future (perhaps some Castle themed?)

Gravatar
By in Lithuania,

Thats insane :) Glad it's available in one week. I bet we need to buy this asap or it will be gone in seconds. Even a box reminds me of the 90s pirate sets !

Gravatar
By in Luxembourg,

Oh this is surprising. Similarly to @ dbbunny and @ yellost, I think I prefer the original submisson as it seems more grownup. (At 200€ this is after all mostly aimed at AFOLs). But I appreciate this old school approach. It’s more a combination of the original ideas submission and a present to all nostalgic AFOLs in one and that isn’t bad either. And hopefully a test for Lego to see the market response and restart the pirate theme for good.
This brings such a grin to my face, my childhood memories in a brand new set, just brilliant.
It’s gonna be one of the first sets I buy twice as there is no way I can keep this out of the hands of my kids...and it would be a shame to even try (they are not allowed to play with my original Black Sea Barracuda).
And since we are still in the lockdown/stay at home phase here in Luxembourg the release date is perfectly timed as well.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Oh jeez my poor wallet.

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

Didn't expect it to be a 2in1, but both builds are incredible! So want it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Amazing, absolute purchase!

Gravatar
By in United States,

When the Tree House set came out, I lamented the fact that they didn't stick with the dark brown colors used in the original Ideas submission. Now I do even more-so. Had Tree House been made with the original dark brown color, these two Ideas sets combined could have made an awesome pirate ship and hideaway.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I can see this being the gateway drug into collecting pirate sets

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Perfect

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's a shame I won't be buying it even though I supported it on Ideas, the original model was so much better, it was a huge fully realized pirate island, this is just a throwback set with a ship that can be placed on an island, sad. The Ideas set was essentially a pirate themed modular, it had shops a full 2 story detailed interior, a veranda etc. This is one of the biggest LEGO disappointments in a while. No I wasn't born in the 80s so I don't have nostalgia goggles. Pretty much all of Bricky Brick's submissions are modulars, they just used his project to make a throwback pirate ship instead of what people actually voted for, sad....................

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is how you get my money.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Holy sh*t that's a beautiful set if I've ever seen one! I hope it will still be on sale by the time I have the funds, considering it's a (undoubtedly best-selling) ideas set :/

It's a shame that beneath the cannon covers there are windows. I wonder to what extent the ship version will work.

But I digress. This set is marvelous!!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Finally, I have been waiting for this ever since it was approved. I wish the train engine was still available for this, as nothing on my list could include that until now.

Gorgeous set, everything looks fantastic.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Looks great, but also how utterly depressing it is to realise that the only way to get LEGO Pirate sets nowadays is through Ideas, that there's no interest at all from LEGO to have a mainstream Pirate theme anymore.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The new design looks a bit crowded and busy to me, but that's possibly the angle on the box-art, more than anything. In any case, I like that the shape is still very recognisable from the submission, despite the reduced piece count; and even if the colour scheme doesn't feel quite as cohesive in the island form as it might have done, I imagine that certainly serves the ship form better, making it a worthwhile compromise ^^

And it's neat to see the familiar face of Captain Redbeard again; I always enjoy seeing classic minifigure characters get a modern update :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

Come on, Lego. I'm trying to move this summer and you keep acquiring more real estate in the truck!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I literally have goosebumps. This set is incredible!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now that's what I'm talking about. This is awesome!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Jaw dropped.

I still remember that Christmas when my brother and I got the original Barracuda. We still have it today. We also still have the foil Christmas candy wrappers that we pressed together to make more gold and gems.

This is an awesome set, then I saw the 2 in 1 aspect and...wow. Lego really came through on this one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

All my wildest pirate dreams have come true!!! The new torso are AMAZING! Redbeard has a little gray! :D AND it can be built as a BEAUTIFUL ship?!?!!? WOW !!! And the box is a throw back to the old pirates line, how fun!!!! LEGO dropped the ball for Pirates 30th, or were they waiting on this?!? :D

Gravatar
By in Germany,

It is only loosely based on the original I'd say. Which is a bit of the shame on one hand. On the other hand, this is probably as retro as it gets. And I think the ability to rebuild the (iconic) ship is fantastic! I am not that deeply invested in Pirates (it's all been my little brother's stuff :), but still I really like this. Probably not enough for an immediate buy, but it's on the 'things to very seriously consider' list for sure

Gravatar
By in United States,

I.... I LOVE IT! When this was announced I did some research into the different LEGO Pirate Captains and their ships in the hopes of setting up some sort of PotC3 Pirate Brethren Court but with LEGO original characters in the far future, and now that I know the set is just as awesome as I had hoped.

And then there's the fact that it can be rebuilt into the Black Sea's Barracuda. Oh dear. I may have to get two... You know what I'll get one and then wait for Christmas and hope for a gift.

Gravatar
By in Greece,

OMG!!! Take my non existant money now!!!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

When I saw the first image, I thought it was a pirate version of Apocalypsburg

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks Lego, for making an amazing set that I want multiple of.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Woah! This makes up for how badly they butchered the Flintstones, imo. Whereas that went from "must-buy" to "I don't care enough", this is the opposite for me.

Gravatar
By in France,

Amazing! And it's coming out in one week! Thank you, LEGO! I have to get this.

Gravatar
By in Albania,

Wow! Looks like you’d need two sets for a proper display :D Definitely a day one purchase

Gravatar
By in United States,

Where's the monkey?!?

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Huh.
I'm not even a Pirate theme fan and I still might get a couple. Pretty kewl.

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

Damn... I`ve just bought all sets I wanted. And now this one is released! Happy frustration:)

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Only 8 days to wait to order and hope to receive it for Easter

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wonderful work of genius! The ship has perfect shaping, beautiful lines, and is a worthy tribute to the original. I'm hoping that the new sails will fit the OG Black Seas Barracuda, as mine were unfortunately damaged by mold after a flood. It may be a long wait before I'm able to buy this epic creation, but it will be worth it. Well done LEGO!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Please don’t let the economy crash, please don’t let the economy crash, please don’t let the economy crash...

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

With tears of happiness - Thank you Lego! - immediately brings me back to 1989, 15 years old, already interested in the girls and admiring Lego pirates all together. What a time :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

The pirate bay does nothing for me but I'll buy it for the alternate model.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Amazing set, hope Lego limit it to 1 per customer initially to allow more people to get it during this time of isolation.

Gravatar
By in United States,

insane!

Gravatar
By in United States,

-Wow-! Heavily modified, with nostalgia cranked to 11! Love it--not a Pirate fan, but this is fantastic! We got the Exosuit, I guess it's only fair that the Pirate fans get one! I agree with many others, this is one of the best Ideas to come around. But they really should have released it on September 19th, yarrrr...

So next year, can we get a Wreck of the Galaxy Explorer Salvage Operation set, pleeease??

Gravatar
By in United States,

Two things I'm generally averse to: really large Ideas sets and changes that are too large from the original.

This set is both (though I voted for the original submission) and I LOVE IT!!!

Big sets need to bring the wow factor and this one does. And all the changes actually make my like the set even more.

This set is a complete win from Lego.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow! I'm completely amazed. I didn't think this would get enough vote to reach 10,000. Then I didn't think it would pass review. Such a great look project and I love Lego Pirate, so this a win-win all around. Can't for to get it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That ship is one of the only sets from my childhood that I keep put together all the time. I absolutely have to get this one! Even the box is the old lego box!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

This is my first "first day purchase"!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This exceeded my expectations for a Lego Ideas and pirates set. Buy it now, because this is probably the last classic pirate set for a long time. I can't wait to build this and put it side by side with my Black Seas Barracuda from back in the day.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Never had Pirates. Space, Castle and City for me. But oh boy that’s a beauty.

Gravatar
By in United States,

"Where's the monkey?!?"

This is the ONLY thing this set is missing. Otherwise, I LOVE this set!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh my gosh that's amazing. I definitely have to get this! My brother still has his original Black Seas Barracuda on display in his home. About a dozen years ago I used Bricklink to find some parts it'd been missing for years. I wonder if he'll be interested in it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's awesome! Looking at the first picture I was thinking I preferred the submission model to this, but then I saw that it can rebuild (which explains the yellow bricks). Sold!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Instant purchase. Heck, I'll buy two.

Looks like it's better than that, you can remove the ship sections from the island and snap them together via ball joints! No need to disassemble/reassemble.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

This... this has to be the best ideas set ever, might even have and edge over the amazing Saturn V...

Gravatar
By in Poland,

seems amazing and price is fair imo

Gravatar
By in United States,

Beautiful! Love the classic box design, wish they would stop using renders for box art instead of photos but the set is still fantastic

Gravatar
By in United States,

This set is incredible. It is a must buy. Lego - Please bring the Pirate line back. I am begging you.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's actually better than I expected but the price is too steep for me.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

instant first day buy! I just need a monkey with it...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Breathtaking. A must buy for me!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm loving it! Might just get this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

You asked. They listened.

Gravatar
By in United States,

When I first saw the release, I thought: the original design is much better. But, after about 30 seconds, I was sold. This new design is amazing. And, the ability to re-create the original ship is fantastic. The ONLY (very minor) thing I would have liked is if the "baseplate" was designed exactly like the original baseplate.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Love it! Would be great to do the same thing with Classic Castle and/or Classic Space (with a Monorail?)... AFOL dreams....

Gravatar
By in United States,

@omnius said:
"How many people are going to opt for the ship build?"

It’s not really like that. You build the whole thing and then can remove the boat parts and connect them. It’s not a 2-in-1

Gravatar
By in Malaysia,

Beyond expectations. Finally, a fine companion to the Imperial Flagship. Must buy.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I never did get any of the pirate sets when I was younger. I'll definitely be getting one.

I also appreciate that they went with the classic box art for this.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This set looks absolutely brilliant....

And my wallet cries some more.....

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm really thrilled with the direction that Ideas has gone the past few years, with a heavy focus on AFOL scale set. It makes me wonder if some of those early days ideas projects that were rejected in favor of small scale and/or pop culture sets would fare better in 2020.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The 2-in-1 aspect of this (making a proper ship or a shipwreck) is identical to what Lego did a year ago with the Minecraft set 21152 Pirate Ship. This is just blown up on steroids and turned into a proper Pirates theme set.

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

I see Retro space set in the future.

Gravatar
By in United States,

*hums Alestorm*

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love it, can’t wait to get this when it comes out. Ideas is such a great theme

Gravatar
By in United States,

Anyone else notice how the stripe in the upper right corner of the box art with the name of the set mimics the "Legoland" stripe that appeared on boxes from 1979 through 1990?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I need to panic buy this.

Oh I'd love that to be true. I even have a Neo Classic Space proposal over on Ideas. But sadly, nearly all such proposals die under 5,000 (or as will be the case for me, under 1,000)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The 2 in 1 nature is great, but I liked the original Pirate Bay better. It was considerably more substantial. I might buy this, might not. But I'm glad to see the enthusiasm for an Ideas set.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

My main complaint with this set is...
Wait a second. There is nothing to complain about.

True, it is quite different from the original submission, but still a truly great set. Can't have everything. The lovely old style box art, the minifigs, the lot. And then just when I thought it couldn't get better, I read it is a two in one set.
Awesome. Love everything about this. I think I might actually have to get two to build both versions simultaneously.

Finally some good news in these dreadful times!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Not a pirate fan one bit (although I owned most, if not all, of the original sets - which I eventually sold: mistake!) but after seeing the review by Brothers Brick, I will get this. I would not even mind having some smaller side sets to accompany it as well... (Eldorado Fortress(6276) anyone?)

Now if they can do the same treatment for the Galaxy Explorer that would be just perfect. Is there any current idea project that represents a closely resembling crashed 497/928 ?

If Lego wants to push the envelop even further, develop a new type of monorail - I'm sure there will be takers even if it is not exactly like the original.

Before I start on the model, thanks Brickset for including the Aussie price. Pity is $300.

As for the set AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! The fact that one can actually build the ship and that its a replica of the Barracuda is just mindblowing. A ship for $300 is a bit steep but worth it. The minifigures are great, Im sad theres arent any naval chaps but O well. Theres so much detail and I also love how the old Legoland logo is replaced with the set name.

People can also keep in mind that in Creator this year theres a small pirate ship so one can finally have ship battles!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh, I love that box art.

Prefer this to the submission, the fact you can build a ship out of the wreck is great, and it just feels more ‘Lego’ than the monotone original.

Nice little nod to the Islanders there too with that statue head.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love it! I really liked the dark colors used in the original Idea we voted on but the fact that this fits in with all the original pirate sets is awesome. Must get ASAP.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This set reveal was AMAZING news to wake up to this morning! Not gonna lie, I was kind of underwhelmed by the original proposal from an aesthetic standpoint, given its dull and dreary color palette, but I loved the focus on playable interior detail, something often lacking in more kid-focused Castle and Pirates sets.

This set keeps the amazing level of detail (arguably even improving on it in some areas that seemed basic or repetitive in the original model), but also makes tasteful use of vivid colors to crank up the nostalgia and tropical vibes even further! And truthfully, I'm not sure I agree with the notion that the overwhelming use of brown in the earlier model was any more "realistic" than the final set.

The popular tendency to associate the distant past with dull colors often has less to do with reality than with the tendency of historical paints and pigments not to age well unless painstakingly preserved, and the tendency of film to use a lack of color as visual shorthand for the past in a general sense.

"Real" pirate strongholds in places like Jamaica or Port Royal, even if perhaps not as lawless and barbaric in real life as portrayed by colonial officials, the 17th-century press, or more recent fictional portrayals, derived a lot of their sketchy reputation for extensively trading in stuff the government sought to strictly regulate or even outlaw: exotic stolen cargo, liquor, prostitutes, etc.

It's hard to imagine it being easier to keep a long-term, fortified hideout like this one supplied with that sort of contraband than to secure access to material like paint and plaster that will help keep a structure made entirely of reclaimed material from rotting away!

Anyway, I love the use of curved slopes to build the sandy shoreline, something I've been wanting to see for years now. And all the classic Pirates throwbacks (the crumbled Islander statue, Imperial Guard skeleton, pirate figures, and Black Seas Barracuda inspired build) are really tickling my 90s kid nostalgia, and inspiring me to think about what other childhood favorite sets and themes I could try and MOC modernized versions of!

If I have one frustration, it's that despite the cots being cute and charming, hammocks like those in 31063-1 and 60153-1 would've probably been a better fit for the alternate build. But beds are totally fine for the main shipwreck hideout style build, and it's such a minor detail that it hardly detracts from my excitement for this set.

Overall, though, this set feels more like a "must-have" than any other pirate set ever has!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Another disappointing Ideas set for me, owing to the changes Lego has made. I would have happily paid 200euro for the original idea, which looks like a fantastic display piece. This looks more like a toy, but is priced like a display piece: again. The ability to change the scene into a ship is a fantastic one, I'll admit, but this seems like one for the kids (if they can afford it).

I haven't bought a Lego set since the huge Hogwarts was released, so I'm not against really expensive sets. I just feel like they need to hit that sweet spot of fun to build, variety of pieces, and attractive for display, otherwise they're not worth it. Lego has been really missing that sweet spot for me lately. Great for my wallet, but I miss buying gorgeous sets!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Finally! A proper Pirate ship to complement my Imperial Flagship! And after the Flagship's inevitable victory, the pirates can use the wreckage as a hideout!

Gravatar
By in United States,

When I first saw the "wrecked ship island" I was pretty disappointed because it was very different from the original submission which I thought was great. However, the fact that you can change this to an actual is pretty epic. And you still have an island. Very very tempting to get. Great set!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I really like this set, but I also like the original Ideas set, I would buy them both. So please make also the original Ideas idea :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Right, so I’m going to put the cat among the pigeons here, but I don’t like it. Not because it isn’t a fantastic set, it is, but because it deviates from the ideas submission so greatly. I felt the same about the treehouse. The whole point in my opinion in Lego ideas is that we vote for builds that we would like to see turned into genuine Lego sets. Pardon the pun but it seems that at the moment Lego are taking the sets that make the qualifying review stage and using those as ‘ideas’ towards future sets. We seem to be going away from making adjustments to suit playability/stability of those sets but keeping to their original form and turning them into almost completely new sets that vaguely represent the original submission. Just my thoughts!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is awesome.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

....

Well I’m buying 3 of this sheeet

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Although my initial reaction was a slight disappointment — mainly due to the disappearance of the many details in the original cabin's interior — this set has grown on me, partly because of its bright colours, minifigures and alternate build. It will probably be a day 1 purchase — although I could wait for a few months to get a 20% discount at a retailer…

By the way, I've never seen a Brickset article with so many likes and comments (resp. 318 and 219 at the time of writing this)! Is this a new record?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Ok, I don't like. Not because it isn't gorgeous, it is. Not because I won't be getting it, I definitely will. But because as a collector of ships (I have 8 - probably not really a collector, but more a gatherer), I will have to get two to be able to display both at once, as I cannot possibly choose - sigh.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Fantastic set!
When the worlds craziness is over, hopefully I’ll have the cash left to get two.
But...
Why are the Port and Starboard twins dressed in red and BLUE!?!?!?!?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

awesome, if they only would re release a classic pirate line to add that would be amazing!!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Amazing set! An absolute buy. Is it just me or is the Ideas line really a fantastic line? From all of the sets that where released under Ideas I've bought I think 90% of them...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The whole set is incredible, but what really pleases me is the way they've shaped the ship's hull up to the gunwales.

I don't think we've seen such drastic deviation from an original idea but TLG clearly took inspiration from it, and have produced something that will spark nostalgia in many of us. Great work by all involved.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I think I might get my Dad this for Fathers Day. Give him something to bring back memories of the Good Ol’ Days, and take his focus off the current situation.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

I prefer the muted colour scheme of the original submission.

I can understand why they used different colours to emulate the original Barracuda, but it diminishes the display piece value greatly.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

@huw
Suggestion for articles:
Ideas submitted vs Ideas released.
The before-after effect is really interesting.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

While this deviates quite a lot from the original Ideas submission to the point of it using the submission as just inspiration I think they nailed it in pretty much every aspect, not only is it practically a 2 in 1 set but it's also a proper pirates themed set a lot of us have been hoping to see for years and to top it off it's based on the classic Black Sea Baracuda with Captain Redbeard himself.

I only have one tiny nitpick and that is I'm not sure if I'm a huge fan of the usage of aqua colored plates to suggest the sea, part of that is because of how Ninjago City spoiled me with it's beautifully detailed waterway and while I don't necessarily think something that intricate is needed I would've appreciated it to be more than just aqua plates.

My thought as well, the hull is beautifully shaped and truly innovative when compared to previous ships! It's great that they made the effort. And having a hull which can be split/sliced in 3 is very interesting, as it allows to take a look directly in the ship without removing the deck/masts. Great!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Kamiccolo I have been wondering about the possibility of layering some 1x1 trans-clear and trans-blue tiles, plates and cheese wedges to give the water a sense of depth and add texture in the form of small waves to the surface. There would likely need to be some effort to resolve the contact with the shoreline, but it could result in a pleasing effect without great expense.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think that TLG have played a blinder here, they’ve taken a user’s “Idea” and used their own expertise to turn it into something much, much more.

It's not something that will grace my wanted list, but I am glad to see how many people they have made very happy. Also, from a non-buyers perspective, I do think it is a lovely thing and a very smart design and I am enjoying pouring over the images.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

It releases on April first... It must be a very elaborate April's Fools joke...

Gravatar
By in United States,

At first I was little bummed that it wasn't as... heavily detailed, I guess, as the original submission. But after seeing what all it has to offer, this is definitely better. The 2-in-1 aspect is a great addition!

Also, I'm definitely opting for the Hideout build. Keep in mind there's a Creator Pirate Ship scheduled for later this year! It's a good time to be a Pirates fan!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Kalhiki : Truthfully, I'm not sure it's lacking in detail compared to the original at all! Most of the really distinctive details of the original like the wood paneling, crooked window, brick-built doors, interior furnishings, ramshackle wooden pier, and tropical plants are retained in the final set. But now a lot of those details are utilized more sparingly, and balanced out with other colors, textures and building techniques to create greater variety, rather than blanketing the entire model in the same colors and textures to the point that everything begins to blend together, with fewer specific points of interest to help guide the viewer's attention through the various areas of the model.

The Idea looks superb whereas the set is meh. All the wrong colors, a neatly stored set of sails on a wreck turned into a hideout? Can't image what the guy who created the idea felt when he saw the outcome. The ship however looks fantastic but why LEGO releases two pirate ships at the same time (with 31109 coming through soon)? They could have released the hideout without ruining it and release a great ship with 31109 at the same time.

The guy who created the idea was happy with the result and was involved through multiple steps of the design process, according to the designer interview on New Elementary. It's certainly okay to prefer the original project, but I wish people wouldn't project their dissatisfaction onto the original project creator.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As of late, a lot of the licenses LEGO has acquired and themes/sets they're putting out has been making me wonder--what the heck is their marketing department on? Yet this, uh, I can't find a single thing wrong with it. And only $200? Shut up and take my money!

As of late, LEGO's classic themes that sort of predated me for the most part have seemed to really be getting my interest. Now, when will we get a Western set that isn't tied to a video game theme or a box office flop?

Gravatar
By in United States,

BSB is one of my all time favorite sets. This is a Day-1 purchase for me, no matter the price...and I'm normally not a Day-1 buyer! The Ideas line keeps on coming out with fantastic sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thankfully I already have the BSB. But this looks like a great variant of it.

Once the covid stuff dies down and money isn’t an issue, this may have to get purchased. Hopefully it will still be around in a year.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'll join the minority by saying I found the original set extraordinary, but I'm underwhelmed with this one. While the playability seems great, I find it looks too "child-ified" compared to the original (and also, apart from the "Pirate lair" concept, there's really nothing in common with the original submission, which feels a bit weird).

Still great that so many like it :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm disappointed that it looks nothing like the one we voted for. I would have bought one that resembled the original Ideas submission, but not this marketing molested monstrosity. I am excited about the $200 I have to spend on something else though :)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Watched a Just2good video on this set the other day (as in: he got it early from Lego), and...WOOOOW!!!

It's one of the few sets (of the 'modern era') that looks amazing in either of it's forms: 'Intact' ('ship' form) or 'broken' (um...'resort'? 'Gilligan's Revenge'?), the ball-joint system used similar too 'Stranger Things' set to hold the 'broken' version...together? And even video and picture is impressive, like: love the ladder/hand-rungs or the hull, dig the new figures, and...yeah.

Haven't bought an 'Ideas' set in a long time, but this one 's got me interested...Even though I'm mostly 'City'folk:)...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I am loving this, and yes I voted for the original submission and loved that as well. I didn't expect to get that as a set though. I know the old fishing store was close to the original but I see that being more of a one-off. Although I would say this isn't better than the original submission it is as good. Because they are different. The question is now do I buy 2 or not.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@olivierz and @jondenial: I'm not sure how this is any sort of radical departure from the original project. Most of the complaints I'm seeing about how the model differs from the original revolve around superficial details like the color choices, rather than on features of more substance.

The general layout, the interior furnishings, and most of the interesting building techniques from the original are still present in the final model. Most of the changes amount to making the model more varied, complex, detailed, and authentic to the core concept (an island fortress built from wrecked ships).

And it's not as though the designers just ignored the original build and released their own unrelated concept of how they thought a pirate fort should look. New Elementary's designer interview clearly explains and shows in actual photos how the designers gradually developed a close recreation of the original concept into the finished set, with both creative input and approval from the project creator: http://www.newelementary.com/2020/03/lego-interview-21322-pirates-designer-madge-carlson.html

And rather than "child-ified", most of the color choices here are selected specifically to appeal to adult nostalgia. There are plenty of much more kid-targeted sets like 60131-1,60409-1, 70605-1, and 70621-1 that are way closer to sort of subdued earth tones in the original project than the 80s throwback color scheme in the final set. Even the brighter color of the water echoes the refreshing caribbean blue used in the box art for sets like 6285-1 and supporting media like 6255-1.

If the cliche about adults preferring dull colors were really a reliable generalization, we'd see WAY fewer adults longing for a return of the yellow and blue spaceships and rainbow-colored spacesuits of Classic Space, yet indifferent to the more "realistic" colors and designs of LEGO City spacecraft or the drab colors of typical Star Wars ships.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

What a disappointment. The original Ideas submission was clever charming and chock-full of whimsical details. This now seems like a cartoonish looking homage catering to fan boys and girls in their forties that love the throwback to their childhood days. While nothing is wrong with that in principle - clearly lots of people are squealing in delight - this has absolutely nothing to do with the original submission. Colour scheme, general shape and details are all completely different and not what any of the more than 10.000 backers voted for.
I am for once are very upset about how this ideas set turned out. What a let down.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

"cartoonish": that's the word I was looking for!

Gravatar
By in United States,

After 30 years their clothes should all be made from the sails.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Surprised at how far this got from the Ideas submission, at this point it was more an inspirational starting point for someone else who clearly had their own thoughts about Pirates. The good news is that what they came up with is also great, just disappointing that it diminishes trust for some people in the process of Ideas. This is a beautiful start to another take on my favorite classic theme.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Fantastic news!
But where is the monkey? :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lego really are on fire these days, and as brilliant as the original submitted idea was, I love this nostalgic take even more. I didn't think they could top the IDEAS Treehouse, but this comes close and looks like being a much more fun build.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This takes me right back to 89 and drooling over the Barracuda set in the Argos catalogue. My best mate at the time had it and I was so jealous! Love this new set its such a trip down memory lane even down to the box design. Lego have completely smashed it with this set. Expect this to sell out fast.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Have just bought a Lego monkey to complete a set I may not be able get on release day if I do am going to use my trans blue tiles from PAB wall and or Ninjago city to tweak this into something just a tad awesomer.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Brick_Belt:
Well...after you rebuild this into the ship, you can rebuild the leftover parts into the island that the ship crashed into.

@TeraMedia:
The Treehouse was probably made in reddish-brown because more of the parts were already available, so they were able to devote those resources to getting other elements into production. In one of the interviews they did, they even mention that the only reason they included a black barrel is because someone else used it in an upcoming set, so they were able to pick it up as a regular production part rather than having to sponsor it themselves. So, for fans, the benefit to using dark-brown would have been the wide range of parts that would be made in dark-brown for the first time. As a set designer, the biggest problem with using dark-brown would have been the wide range of parts that would _have_ to be made in dark-brown for the first time.

@560heliport:
There's a hungry shark, a couple of what may be coconut crabs, a pair of vicious birds, and a bunch of pirates with nothing else to eat except coconuts. If they had no problem eating one of the enemy soldiers, I'm not sure a monkey has good odds.

@CaptainMutant:
I see three cannons.

@CaptainMutant:
And two parrots.

@Aanchir:
I actually have very little interest in the blue/trans-yellow Space craft, largely because somehow my brother and I managed to avoid getting a single one as kids. My first blue/trans-yellow Space set was actually Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!, and it kind of galls me to think that they did that when the blue Spaceman never came in any set using that color scheme. To me, Classic Space was light-grey with trans-green, or white with trans-blue. Except that, you know, the original Blacktron beat the pants off any other Space theme.

This is definitely not the Ideas project I voted for. The original submission was a pirate island, this is a convoluted pirate ship. I was really looking forward to this release and am hugely disappointed. No thanks, I’ll save my money. This is the second Ideas set that has been radically changed from the original submission. The Treehouse was a huge disappointment too. Hey, Lego, stop messing with the charm and artistry of the approved Ideas!

Totally agree the original submission was cooler with a much better Pirate base feel to it. The set as released is still pretty darn cool - they should have done both!

Firstly I am a big pirates fan but this is rubbish. Rubbish in the sense that they completely bastardised the original design which fans went crazy for and produced this cartoonish crap. Ideas range is meant to be for adults, this set is neither for adults or kids. No one in their right mind will spend that much on a set to give to their kids only too see it destroyed in 2 days. As an adult collector, I'm hugely disappointed how far this set has changed from the original. Lego has taken an extremely original design, destroyed it by making it cartoonish and hope the hype from voting will keep fans interested in this crap. This looks like a $150 set at best, the original design I would of paid $300 for but I paid less for the old fishing store which you didn't wreck !!

Lego you missed the opportunity to release nostalgia sets last year (?) for 30th anniversary and now you do this crap. I wouldn't even get this for the BSB conversion because it doesn't look like much of an improvement over the original, it looks very basic and less detailed but for $300 ! Get real TLG.

Remove the ideas logo from the box, this was no one's idea.
