Tips and Tricks #1

Posted by ,

Hello everyone!

My name is Tiago Catarino, a former Creator 3in1 LEGO Designer who still can't get enough of LEGO!

For the last couple of months after I've left Denmark, I've been doing daily building tips on my Youtube channel.

Reading the recent posts What will Brickset do for you, I couldn't help but think that, maybe sharing some of these tips could hopefully teach you some new LEGO tricks, and maybe, inspire larger builds of your own. LEGO as we all know, is an awesome time killer, especially so in this troubled times we're living.

So without further ado, I'll be sharing 3 building tips with you all hoping to inspire you to build something fun today!

Clock

Inspiration for LEGO builds can come from all places, just look around! In this case, my grandfather used to have a clock just like this, so I had to do it!

Find out how the parts you need and how to build it in this short video:

Pool table

The beauty of LEGO is that a boring green table suddenly becomes an interesting piece once you add some dots of colour.

Vending Machine

I always looked at window elements and thought that they can be used for so much more than buildings! Fun fact, I had to open a 76119 Batmobile: Pursuit of the Joker just to get 2 elements to do this MOC!

Building his gingerbread house was one of my favorite building experiences! The way the roof came together was simply incredible.

I love all three! I just built the vending machine for my city layout. I also subscribed to your Youtube channel. Thank you!

The world is not having its best days right now but Brickset is doing a pretty damn good job to keep spirits up with all these great articles!

By in United Kingdom,

I love these but my minifigures insisted on staying inside so I poked the pieces through their home windows for them to try these out.

By in Canada,

Regular features like this would make an amazing addition to the site.

Fantastic feature. More please.

All 3 of those builds are brilliant, I love them! Perhaps if the vending machine were brown instead of black, this could be a... 3-in-1 set?

One of my favorite inspirations came at an Italian restaurant one evening--there was a scythe on a wall and I thought that would make an interesting form for a space ship. I was participating in a Blacktron building contest at the time, so I made an asymmetrical Blacktron style ship in the form of a Scythe.

That vending machine is a delight!

These are the sorts of things that I expect Blocks magazine to have and to find it for free, because someone’s goodness has allowed them to help other people’s experience whilst in troubled times, is rarely seen. Thank you.

Awesome! Subscribed!!
Hope you don’t mind me asking, and completely understand if you don’t want to answer.. by how comes you left Lego... I think most of us AFOLs would love to work for Lego and would never ever want to leave! I understand there may be a million reasons/personal reasons or new projects you may want to do... but am just curious... once again sorry if the question is too personal/private...

By in United Kingdom,

Nice! Thanks for sharing your tips, Tiago! Expect to see some of your builds in my MOCs soon :)

Hey, in case he won't answer your question for some reason, I suggest you to check out some older videos on his channel, I believe he has a video where he explained it and shows his last day at LEGO! ;)

By in New Zealand,

Great idea. Thanks. Something to build while New Zealand is shutdown and everyone is in quarantine for the next 4 weeks.

By in Norway,

Yawnn... More videos which doesn't even work at my end. I *really* don't want to be negative here, as these are great builds and it's nice to provide tips and inspiration, but I still think you should have a few pictures showing how these are built. I don't expect full one-piece-per-step type instructions, but maybe one picture of the parts used and one or two more to show how it goes together. As-is this really is just half an article.

By in Canada,

This is the type of content I've always wanted on Brickset.

By in Ireland,

Cool, I would love to see some more alternative builds on rebrickable.com, unfortunatelly my own creations are not enough creative to appear on that site:/ stay safe everyone..

By in United States,

Thanks for the tips! These are really cool.

By in Portugal,

Thank you Tiago for sharing your talent.

Hoping to see all Brickset members subscribed to your social media!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks so much for sharing this! I love all three, but I think the first one I'll do is the pop machine.

@Brick_Bricky_McBrickface

The reason he left LEGO is in one if his videos. He doesn’t go into details, but states that he and his family wanted to return to their home country of Portugal.

Gravatar
By in France,

Now, I just need to make that same vending machine in red.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, amazing. The 3-in-1 sets are some of my favorites, since they show multiple uses for some of the parts all in one box.

Thank you for sharing!
