Super Mario set revealed by Amazon.es

Posted by ,

While we wait patiently for more official information about the products resulting from LEGO's new relationship with Nintendo, Amazon.es appears to have prematurely revealed pictures of one of the forthcoming Super Mario sets.

Other than the pictures, and a cryptic title, 'LEGO-tbd-leaf-1-2020 Leaf Construction Kit, Multicolor 71360', no further details are provided.

You can view images, hot-linked to Amazon's server*, after the break.

Via Stonewars.de and Hoth Bricks.

(* so that should LEGO or Nintendo want them removed they can ask Amazon)

Looks rather fun!

Yet another license...

Looks uninteresting. It's a gimmick that will probably be entertaining for a few minutes. It's a shame they didn't go with actual system sets.

By in Netherlands,

This is just 1 set out of many, and the price to piece count ratios vary a lot within those sets.

So just because this set looks like this, doesn't mean the other sets in the theme have to be all the same.

I wonder if you could build something around Mario, to make him look like something else.

That might be what I do with this, if I get it.

The hype was so short lived, wasn't it?

Still waiting for actual Mario minifigs

Cool collectible at least and a fun game at the most.

Maybe a collectible minifig series is a better way to go.

Hmm... I think this is a meh from me.

By in United States,

From a tech perspective, this is pretty interesting. Mario seems to read whatever is put on top of the bricks (sticker with QR-esc-Code) and react accordingly. A lot of future potential for interesting other sets. Bricks that react to Bricks can lead to some pretty exciting new Spike Prime designs (Boost/Mindstorms/what-ever-other-robotics-theme). If people have the opportunity to print out stickers with their own reactions, quite a few fun things can be done.

I do feel like there’s been a bit too much time between the ‘reveal’ and the product actually releasing that the buzz has worn off a little. Obviously the world has changed a bit in that time, but they should’ve rushed these to shrives shortly after that video.

By in Ireland,

Meh, its more for young kids, nothing here for adult collectors.. unless a UCS Mario figure with over 1k pieces appears..

Gravatar
By in United States,

Clearly kids are their target audience here, which is fine - Lego is a toy after all! However, as a now-adult who always wanted Lego Mario growing up, I’m still hoping for legitimate sets and minifigures . I have very high hopes for the rumored CMF series!

It's the little things that cheer me up. When I was a kid and got into Nintendo, the vibe of the company and its games felt very much in the same neighbourhood as that of TLG. Never really imagined we'd get the two combined so nicely! I've not kept up with Nintendo closely for a long time (my video game hobby has been another casualty of my 30s), but I could fall back in love again...

Oh great, this was Leaf too? What a continued disappointment.

Very cute! This not only gives us a better idea of the contents of the "starter set" on its own, but there's also one component that didn't appear in the previous press release/video—a clever little Lakitu-style cloud that Mario can presumably ride.

It also tells us what components in the video AREN'T in the starter set (and thus, will presumably be appearing in other sets in the theme instead). Those include the Koopa Troopa, Yoshi, Shy Guy, Monty Mole, Piranha Plant, Lava Bubble, and Blooper, as well as locations like the Toad House, desert, a separate tower that can be knocked down with a lever, a small coral reef for the Blooper, and a castle area with torches. This starter set alone samples from lava, water, and grassland areas, so I'm curious whether other sets will be as varied or whether they'll be dedicated more to individual level types.

These sets will go on clearance at Walmart pretty fast.

By in United States,

It's probably too early to judge these based on looks alone, they're clearly play sets and not display sets so naturally they don't appeal to people who prefer sets that go on a shelf to look good, I'm interested to see how the play gimmicks work.

With that said I do hope they make regular sets with the license later and maybe even release other Nintendo themes, I'm one of those that prefer original themes over licensed ones but this is one that I'm really looking forward to.

Not a fan. Maybe little kids will like them.

By in Australia,

Not bad, I think my 7-yo cousin would really like it. But I was never much of a gamer to try this out. I might get a small one to try it out.

Okay, so besides Mario, here are the other new pieces we can positively ID now:

4-stud, 6-stud, and 8-stud bases with partial stud patterns on top
4-stud base with no studs (the gold one Mario is standing on)
Sewer pipe
2x4 tile w/ round ends
turtle shell
foot (possibly one foot design shared by Goomba and Bowser Jr.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I was so hopeful we'd wind up with actual Mario minifigs, with a little Yoshi he could ride around as he saves the day alongside Sonic, the Avengers and the Justice League.

I mean, if Lego has the license, I'm not giving up hope for that. But I'll still be passing on this set.

By in United States,

Should have either done a Mario theme or a Mario Kart theme

@Double_J_Bricks:
They've got the license now, and I can't imagine that Nintendo locked them into this one specific concept with no other possibilities.

Nope, two foot designs (one 2x2, used for characters like the Goomba, Monty Mole, Koopa Troopa, and Yoshi, and one 2x3, used for characters like Bowser Jr. and Shy Guy). Also from the earlier video, there's a also 3x3 tile (shy guy mask), and two separate shells (one with spikes for Bowser Jr. and one without for the Koopa Troopa)

@Steakz: Whether or not you see much interest in the digital gimmick, these are definitely actual System sets. "System" doesn't by definition require classic minifigures, and frankly, most of the characters besides Mario involve way more actual building than they would if everything had been done at "minifig scale".

Just saw an article shared in one of my friend groups with pictures and prices for two of the other sets: Bowser's Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set at 99.99 USD/EUR and Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set at 29.99 USD/EUR. It also lists some details about a free app that will be launching alongside this with features like score tracking:

During the original product reveal I thought that the red image with Mario, Goomba, and flagpole was all that would be included in the "Starter Pack." This however looks much more substantial!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now give us Steven Universe

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is what Lego has been trying to get to for years with various gimmicks like the Ultra Agents "brick", Hidden Side app etc. Now that Nintendo is involved, maybe it will be more than a "try one or two times and forget about it" trend. Still waiting for that Labo/Lego announcement...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Still scared of that Mario

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It reminds me a bit of Mouse Trap

I'll probably get the set that has Mario in it just to have a look at the technology. But I suspect it will end up in the box of Lego tech mishaps along with the Spybotics and barcode scanner truck

But that's exactly how licensing operates.

This gonna bomb so hard.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hoping and frankly expecting that this is just the first round of what will be many different styles of sets (CMFs, microbuilds, game worlds, character busts) and many different brands (Starfox, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby) from Nintendo. Now that they have the working relationship, it makes sense to exploit it for all its worth and I can't wait till they do!

As an opening salvo, this is not my thing, but it's fine, and I hope it does very well so as to encourage more. Depending on price, I may or may not get one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hmm. Looks fine as an interactive game for kids. As an adult collector, tho, I have no real desire for it. It'll be interesting to see how well it does.

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

It looks like these sets are made more for kids, but I can't see much playability in the platforms. Jump, jump, spin, fight? It works in a game, but not so much in LEGO. Just my opinion.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I personally like these sets, but obviously minifigs would be better

And minifigs will obviously come eventually

Gravatar
By in Italy,

wow, this looks really good!
I'm hoping for a Lego-themed level/costume on Odyssey 2 for the Swtich.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I'm still waiting for another Creator Expert train... just saying TLG... no interest in this although I loved the game as a kid.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Meh, i would have preferred actual minifg scale sets without crazy gimmicks

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I completely get Nintendo’s desire to partner with Lego. Dependant on how fair the partnership goes I would then get Lego’s desire also. But I don’t so much see any real interest in this set from any age group.

By in United States,

@Lyichir:
From the Bowser Castle pics, I can confirm a 3x3 round tile. Bowser's mouth also uses a 2x4 tile with round ends, and he's got a bigger turtle shell on his back. I didn't see any other new parts that haven't already been listed.

@GSR_MataNui:
That set should cost $20-30, probably depending on whether or not Mario is included. As we find out more about this system, I suspect they wanted to cater to three basic needs. You need a robust starter set so that one purchase gives you a lot of variety. You need a boss battle, so there's something "epic" to end your level with. And you need "army-builder" sets that allow you to bulk up your level with lots of repeated sections. So if you want tons of basic villains, you need something on the small side rather than buying multiple copies of a $60, $70, or $100 set.

@SeekerBear:
Itsa me! Your NightMare-io!

@Snazzy101:
There are two possibilities. One is that they got a generic "building set" license, which would allow them to do all kinds of stuff beyond this format. The other is that they got one that was very specifically tailored to this brick/game system. An open license would be more valuable than one that's locked into a specific format, so Nintendo could ask for more money.
