Brand new theme revealed: Brick Sketches!
Posted by Huw,We've just received four sets from a hitherto unseen theme that is set to launch on June 1st: Brick Sketches!
These 2-dimensional pictures are the work of Chris McVeigh, who came up with the idea before he was hired by LEGO last year. You can view his work on Flickr. In the preface to the instructions, which you can view after the break, Chris explains that "through an amazing series of events, Brick Sketches are now available from the LEGO Group itself. It's a dream come true."
There will be four initially: two Star Wars and two DC Super Heroes.
Expect our first review in a few hours, and in the meantime you can view pictures of the boxes after the break.

Seems like I'm going to start yet another collection… :D
Oh interesting! Wonder if these will be like the ‘kids’ version of the upcoming ‘adult’ Mosiacs line.
Any info on pricing ?
Great idea! Hope it will be reasonably priced. Otherwise, this concept can be MOC'd by everyone. Start your engines!
Oh my gosh they turned his MOCs into a product!! How cool is that!
I also heard these are $20 USD?
BrickHeadz 2.0!
2D Brickheadz!! Great! Darn, why didn't I think of that? :)
The Batman and Joker ones scream "Batman: The Animated Series" and are suddenly must have for me
I’d only be interested in the Star Wars Ones or Nintendo ones, if they make Nintendo ones. I’m hoping they do
Why?
I dont really see anyone buying these because they are very easy to make yourself for way less money then 20USD (if that actually is the price these will be going for)
I thought I recognised these!! I love that not only did his creation/s become an official set, it was made into an entire new series!
Interesting idea, it's definitely going in the same direction as the BrickHeadz, but I wonder how people will display these.
That being said, it will also be relying heavily on licensed IPs, and will also be priced accordingly. I wish they did a bit more of their own original stuff, rather than relying on the merchandising powers of StarWars and DC/Marvel stuff...
They're neat, but like others have said, I would probably just download the directions and make them with pieces I have, unless the price was really good.
Boba Fett please.
Love these!
Fantastic! They're a buildable collectable like Brickheadz but without that theme's horrifyingly dead eyes.
The addition of magnets would seal the deal.
I just heard my Dad's voice from years ago say "with the pieces you've got at home, you could already build that". This is the first time seeing a Lego set where I've thought the same thing.
Look good, though. I hope it's a successful line!
I think this is aesthetically better than BrickHeadz.
This is fantastic - I’ve always loved Chris McVeigh’s brick sketches but have been too lazy to gather the parts together and make them for myself. I can’t wait for these!
I just have to say I really appreciate 2D (and space friendly) builds. Sign me up.
Ooo... these look nice, but I’ll only get them for $20 AUD. If $30, I still “might” get them.
Initially I thought, oh whatever next... then I was strangely drawn (geddit) to the joker one. Attach some magnets to the back and it’ll look great on the fridge!
These would look great as murals in a city setting.
No prequel-content from Star wars this time either??

There's an upcoming mosaic liinnnne!!!! I had no idea!
Good on Chris McVeigh, this a great idea for (re)using lego bricks. As a product, though, besides not being my cup of tea, I fear we are once again witnessing one of those periods when LEGO loses track of what their core product is, and starts shooting in all directions. That hasn't worked in the past, and I fear it will not work now, either.
And about time too! I've been a long-time admirer of Chris's work so it's good to see him start getting official releases. Having said that, these look to be a little less detailed than his original "unofficial" sketches.
The Stormtrooper definitely seems to be missing some of the features that were present when Chris was still operating solo (excuse the vaguely punny SW reference). Maybe I just remember them being more detailed. I'll have to check back against the original designs.
Either way, still excellent work (Joker's just outstanding!) and - as others have said - it's the start of *another* collectable line!

If there are no magnets, you could attach them to the magnets that Lego already sells. I'm looking forward to Batman and the Joker, and thanks to you, I'll be attaching them to those magnets!
Funny I was just wondering couple of days ago when we'll start to see the work from Chris McVeigh’s at LEGO. This is awesome! Well done! I prefer this a lot to BrickHeadz.
I gotta wonder why a First order trooper and bb8? Like imagine being sold Fish Mooeny and teenage Bruce from the gotham show instead of Joker and Batman. I never see any of the "fandom menace" cover lego star wars stuff, bb8 and the trooper are probably the best choices of st characters to merchandise, but its certianly not leading with your best foot. Hasbros not doing great with the sales of star wars toys, I gotta wonder if the license is gonna end up hurting them with an obligation to st merch. Either way between this ,missing the bar with Mario, and those ridiculously over priced monkie kidd sets i think Lego (like most companies it seems) might need to take a second look at whos calling the shots.
They look nice but I'm scared to find out the price
These should be dead easy to rebrick for about half the rumored RRP, if it is indeed 20 USD/EUR.
I like these the dc comics one especially I hope they do a marvel selection too...
Oh hell yes! That Batman and Joker are fantastic.

Yup! Iron Man, Marilyn Monroe and The Beatles are amongst the rumoured ones coming soon.
Everyone is comparing these to Brickheadz but I don’t see the connection at all. Outside of licensed characters, the two themes have no similarities. Brickheadz are stylized 3D figures and these are 2D pictures, almost mosaics. They’re just completely separate, it’s like comparing the Star Wars sets to the DK books.
These look neat, I'll definetly wait for the Mosaic line for the moment.
Wow! This is great news. I’ve followed Chris for a while on Instagram and loved these sketches. I knew he got a job at LEGO and I guess this is what it was for. This is amazing.
Looks great, but I have zero interest in this, even less than the Star Wars helmets.
I will scream if we don’t get Mando and The Child at some point.
Omg! These will be an awesome pop culture grid on my wall!
These are pretty interesting, but not for me until I see something from a theme that I'm interested in, such as Marvel Super Heroes or Star Wars (Episodes I-VI).
These are fantastic! I've always loved the previous ones of these he's done. I wonder how much they'll end up costing?
Ugh. Between this and the upcoming Mosaics, it seems LEGO is lurching backwards 15 years.
And, shouldn't these be called "Plate Sketches"?
Fun for those that like these (I'm happy for you), but I'll be passing, especially at $20/per!!!

Thanks for the info. Wonder if they'll do some landmark mosaics.
if it's gonna be 20 euro I wonder is it worth to buy or maybe pick pices from bricklink will cost less.
At the right price I'd definitely want some of these.
My wallet cannot stand the tension! Once the STAR WARS sets are revealed, my life will be complete!
I don’t much care for that BB8, but the Stormtrooper is a a much have!

"BrickHeadz 2.0!" Good things these aren’t numbered
These are great ideas! And they seem to be relatively inexpensive as well.
I prefer these much better over the BrickHeadz line. They don't give off a creepy vibe like you get from BrickHeadz.
Very cool development for Chris. I've been following him on Instagram for years and like all his work.
Do the big gaps in the set numbers indicate many many more to come?
Release Chris's Bumble!
And couldn't agree more about Brickheadz, ^^MTBrickHouse, creepy.
Very refreshing theme, I will for sure get some.
Good job to the designer for pushing it through!
@ Blakus
"The Batman and Joker ones scream "Batman: The Animated Series" and are suddenly must have for me"
I can see it with Batman (although technically in BTAS he was blue), but for the Joker it looks more like Cesar Romero from the old old live action Batman television show.
I just very recently got my hands on a LEGO case for my new iPhone SE (853797, I know a Friends one exists 853886 but I wasn't able to find any local sellers), and this looks like another cool project to do with it although I'm already all set on DOTS!
I really like how the logo's font seems similar to BrickHeadz, given the similar concept.
Right now these don't have that much of a draw to me, but I'd love to see some LEGO original characters like Johnny Thunder or Tahu in this style (or as Mosaics.)
Also, is this a different theme than Mosaics? Brickset still has them listed separately and they do have completely different set names and numbers. It seems kind of odd to have two portrait oriented themes running at the same time. The concepts of the Mosaics' titles seem much more interesting to me than these, but these seem like they'd be more affordable and collectible.
These actually look very cool! I recall seeing Chris's work in the past, so it's got to be extremely gratifying for him to see these come to life as official Lego products. Congrats Chris!
Interesting idea, I'm looking forward to seeing how this "theme" grows in the next couple of years. But these are a definite pass for me.
I thought these looked familiar! Congrats to Chris! I wonder if eventually it will be more profitable for Lego just to sell instructions for sets like these, that only seem to use very simple parts. I'd rather spend $5 on instructions than $20 or even $10 when I have half the parts and can get the rest for cheap on BL.
I remember these from the internet!
It is great to see them as sets.
I wonder if this line will become the new seasonal offerings, replacing the Brickheadz which replaced the vignettes, which replaced whatever came before that.

I think many of us always assume everyone has a vast collection and can just easily make this. This is definitely not the case, and there are plenty (probably majority) of LEGO fans that do NOT have an extensive collection to readily make these, nor want to tear apart another set to do so.
I personally think these are really cool and will likely be low price points and will sell like hot cakes. I will be buying them just for the parts since I need more plates, wedge plates and tiles in my collection. Love these!
I want!!!

I agree with you that Nintendo ones would be very popular, especially Super Mario or Pokemon related ones, but I don't know how likely it is that Nintendo ones would be made. We can only hope!

Both lines of sets are collectible images of figures like superheros, Disney characters, and the like. You really don't see the similarity?
This is great! I always wondered why there wasn't a theme for mosaics such as these, and I hope they do a good range of characters. I think that classic and modern Disney characters would be popular, and with LEGO's recent Super Mario theme, it would be great to have Super Mario characters in the Brick Sketches theme too! Can't wait to buy these.
I’ve always admired his Brick Sketches on Flickr.
Its fantastic that they’re now an official product.
Now if these sets were designed as 2in1, constructable either as a BrickSketch OR a BrickHeadz, that would be something I could appreciate. Any set that doesn't offer alternate builds is just lazy design limiting, not encouraging, creativity.

Why not?
Wow, I certainly didn't see these coming! Absolutely loved them as soon as I first saw them. (I love Chris McVeigh's work, especially his mosaics). As a huge Star Wars fun, two of these are automatically a must-buy for me, although I think the others look fantastic as well! Can't wait to see more official stuff from Chris!
Upon closer inspection, these actually look nice!

You don't need a vast collection to rebrick these. Getting those parts cheaply via Bricklink shouldn't be a problem.
^ Time is money. Who can be bothered for the sake of a few €...?
@swedishbrick:
No Star Wars from Disney Wars, either.
@SinKiller_Nick:
No way. Dark-purple jacket, instead of dark-pink. Green hair, instead of lime. Orangey shirt instead of grey. Green tie instead of black. Yellowed teeth and yellow eyes (showing this actually is B:TAS, rather than TNBA where they made his eyes black), and most importantly, if he was the Romero version, they would have had to stick a white 3743 on his face.
@Teriyaqi:
I mean, they post the instructions for free on their website, so I'm not sure how that format is supposed to pay for itself. Designing sets does cost money, after all.
@STL_Brick_Co:
And people with vast collections are less likely to skip sets if they're trying to stay complete in a theme.

Actually, every brick building fan I know.
Over time it becomes much more than "a few €".
Sure, if you buy just the occasional set you might not care, but if you buy hundreds of sets over the years (or more than a thousand like with several people I know), saving a couple of € per set adds up to considerable amounts of money.
The first wave is Star Wars and DC? Huge surprise!
In all seriousness, these look super impressive, although mosaics aren’t really my thing.
They have a brick built stand in back so they can stand like a photo frame. There’s more bricks than appears from front.
I could see these working well as wall art in a kids room, but you would need to have a way to hang them, which wouldn’t be too hard to build a nail holder on the back, but if that isn’t included in the original set, I doubt parents would buy these.
I would pay no more than a £5 each.

These will probably be cheaper than the Brickheadz, and in a lot of ways this is finally a GOOD example of "do more with less". These should sell unless the prices get spiked, and still have a good margin. That it started off with a MOC, double bravo for not only is LEGO finally being smart, they're being smart and listening to the users.
The criticism about it being focused on LIPs is accurate, but I think the observation is accomanited by an unrealistic conclusion. Licensed items guarantee a market. I can sell more Jokers and Darth Vaders to the general public than I can Ninjago or Hidden Side. They do sell, and if you aren't in business to make money, you aren't in business. If your ideological and aesthetic purity is more important, your company is going bankrupt.
