Super Mario 2021 sets revealed!
Posted by Huw,
Here's a press release for new expansion packs, power-up packs and character packs that are being launched on January 1st:
The LEGO Group and Nintendo build out LEGO Super Mario world for even more customised adventures
The two companies expand LEGO Super Mario with exciting new sets including: Master Your Adventure Maker Set, which puts kids in charge of the interactive level play like never before, three new Expansion Sets, two new Power-Up Packs, and 10 new collectible Character Packs
BILLUND, November 17, 2020: The LEGO Group today announced a brand-new range of sets and characters, opening up even more new adventures for the LEGO Super Mario experience. Fans can expand on the LEGO Super Mario products launched earlier this year with a whole new range of sets and Collectible Characters – all designed to help them build a Super Mario world that’s unique to them and comes alive exactly how they want it to.
The other sets introduced today are the Chain Chomp Jungle Encounter Expansion Set, the Piranha Plant Puzzling Challenge Expansion Set, the Wiggler’s Poison Swamp Expansion Set, Penguin Mario Power-Up Pack and the Tanooki Mario Power-Up Pack.
The new sets and characters will give fans the chance to, among other things, have LEGO Mario slide on his belly as Penguin Mario or spin round as Tanooki Mario. The sets will also introduce much-loved enemies including the Piranha-Plants, Larry, a Goomba, Wiggler, and Koopa Paratroopa, to the play, all of who can be defeated or played with for coin rewards.
LEGO Super Mario jumped into existence earlier this year through a unique partnership between the LEGO Group and Nintendo. The adventures were kick-started with an entry-point set: LEGO Super Mario Starter Course, which includes an interactive LEGO Mario figure that collects coins in interactive level play created with LEGO bricks.
Each Expansion Set and Collectible Character is designed to be used with the entry point set, featuring seven action bricks for different interactions with the LEGO Mario figure, which has LCD screens in its eyes, mouth and belly to display instant reactions to movement, colour and action bricks.
Building on the existing biomes of water (blue), fire (red), sand (yellow) and grass (green), this second wave of products introduces Soda Jungle, a whole new biome characterised by its purple colour, which represents poison, that enables children to experience different reactions from LEGO Mario and new ways of playing.
All sets and characters are compatible, allowing fans to combine sets and characters announced today with the Starter Course and all other LEGO Super Mario products revealed in June this year.
All sets come with their own series of distinctive challenges and characters, and have also been designed to work alongside the free LEGO Super Mario app, so fans can make the most of the experience when playing solo, or when challenging friends or family members.
The app hosts 3D Building Instructions for the sets, keeps track of scores and provides inspiration for builds and ways of playing to encourage continuous rebuilding and extended playtime.
“It wouldn’t be Super Mario if we weren’t constantly creating new worlds and adventures for everyone’s favourite Plumber,” said Simon Kent, Design Director and Creative Lead for LEGO Super Mario, the LEGO Group.
“The LEGO Super Mario sets we released earlier this year have been extremely well-received by fans, and we’re really excited to build on those with even more characters and experiences today. We really want to empower users to be as creative as possible with LEGO Super Mario – and today’s expansion sets and new collectible characters have been launched to broaden the horizons of the LEGO Super Mario universe, letting players be as imaginative as possible in the way they have Mario interact with his friends – as well as defeating his enemies.”
The recommended retail prices for the sets will be:

No love for Luigi/Peach etc...?
Missed opportunity for a follow-up starter set.
Woah! Look at that new poison mushroom, that’s very cool
So looks like no Luigi
The sets all loom brills though especially that epic Wrigglers Posion Swamp. Wonder what the poison Purple plates will do when interacted with Mario.
The new blond bags are epic and that penguin suit Power Up is adorable. Like that you can change his arms out for the flippers.
Great wave overall.
Having picked up all the Dimensions sets (although most at a big discount), I'm very releived to have not started down the Mario path. It looks to be a very expensive endeavour in an already expensive hobby.
These look fantastic!
Doesn’t look like anything from Mario, at a glance
71386 looks great but I feel they might not have unique actions.
The two power ups look pretty good and I especially like the NSMB Wii throw in.
I wonder what the maker sets will be about.
The remaining jungle sets look very nice IMO.

you actually attach the penguin wings over the arms
not much interest in the Mario line, cant be bothered to pay for the starter set and no interesting parts than can be used in other ways. im mostly a moc builder so these are useless to me.... I do love the little blind bags tho, they are great for parts!
Loving the recolours. Still don't get the concept. At all.
Not particularly interested in this line, but the little character packs look like they might be fun.
Collectible figures are much more interesting to me since I prefer building and looking at Lego to playing with it.

The electronics work without the app, but a software update is required for anything past wave 1 to work
Based on the description for the Maker set, it looks like it could've easily been an alternative Starter Course, but there doesn't appear to be a way to get Mario as an optional add since he and a goal action brick are all that's needed to make it a complete, self-contained experience:
"Among the new sets is the Master Your Adventure Maker Set – a creative toolbox, which enables children to completely customise LEGO Super Mario building, play time and ways to earn coins. Using the Customisation Machine included in the Maker Set, children can change how LEGO Mario reacts to three Special Bricks, offering variety in play, excitement and an element of surprise. The Maker Set also introduces a new special Start Pipe that will shuffle the known rules of the level play, in that players are challenged to reach the Goal Pole in less time, yet with increased rewards up for grabs. The Maker Set comes with 366 pieces, all selected to ensure that children can unleash their creativity and customise their own levels for themselves or other players."
The Soda Jungle biome looks awesome, but that might just be because purple is my favorite color. But none of these expansions stands out to me as something I'd get.
Interesting that a Poison Mushroom will be appearing in a character pack.

The concept is basically collecting as many coins as you can in 1 minute. Mario starts the collecting by entering the tube, and finishes it by stepping on the flag brick. In between you can stomp your mario on enemies, do balancing tricks or just hop around on any tile you can find and it will give you coins. When completed you see the total score on the display on Marios belly.
You can basically make your own course to make it a challenge for yourself, but of course you can also get a ridiculous high score by just lining up all the scannable pieces next to each other.

That’s right, all of the elements will lose their clutch as soon as the app goes away
It’s like we keep forgetting that 99% of the sets don’t depend on the app...
Oh cool, Larry. Suppose the other six Koopalings will show up eventually? I might actually be tempted to buy a set with Iggy or Ludwig, lol.
They look cool.
I can see the Tanooki suit being very popular!

While you have a point, the main attraction of these sets is the game aspect. And if Lego eventually (inevitably) retires the app, that main feature is gone. Kids can still play with these, pretending to be playing a Mario level, but I suspect a large number of them would at that point rather just play a real Mario game.

NEW THORN PIECES! I always liveove more lego flora!
In my opinion, these sets look somewhat 'weird' compared to the last theme. It doesn't have the same feel.
I think that they should have spaced out the set releases. They just launched 19 sets in August, and these 7 new ones would bring the total to 26. It feels like too much of a rush for me.
While I just had to get the lovely first character pack series - without getting any other set in the theme - the second series somehow doesn't interest me.
I'm so curious how this is performing at retail.
Don't give up on Luigi just yet. The set list we had for months was 100% correct (Brickset is actually missing a fourth expansion set) besides a second starter set. I think (hope) LEGO will reveal Luigi Starter set after the holidays because they don't want to decrease sales.
Or maybe LEGO just hates Luigi and we will never get him besides a green costume set, I have no insider info. :)

I vote we skip Luigi and go straight to Waluigi
Love these, will definitely be adding them to the wishlist. On that subject, has anyone else noticed a hard limit of 85 items on your wishlist on Lego.com? Seems low, but maybe I’m a hoarder. :)
It's just frustrating to watch all these cool ideas being wasted on sets that are so heavily abstracted and not minifigure scale.
71380 Master Your Adventure is a cool set with lots of cool new items specifically Larry Koopa, but I would have much rather had this be another starter set with Luigi. 71381 Chain Chomp Jungle Encounter is incredible and i'm really surprised it's only $20. Also I really want to know how that chain works, and if any one knows who the villain with the vines for limbs please inform me of it's name. 71383 Wiggler's Poison Swamp is fantastic because of all the large purple pieces, and of course Wiggler is fantastic. I also want to know what the gear that Wiggler's attached to does and what the bridge does. 71384 Penguin Mario was very unexpected in my opinion, but a welcome surprise. However I don't like 71385 Tanooki Mario, I think it's way too similar to Cat Mario from earlier this year and it's ability is kinda lame. Unfortunately I don't know the names of most of the characters from the 71386 Character Packs Series 2, so if anyone knows the names again please inform me of them (I really need to do some research on character names). Overall, a great second wave!

The enemy from the Chainchomp encounter set is called a "bramball."
Although 71380 Master Your Adventure looks to be the most useful in expanding the game play in your own ad-hoc way unsure why it is $20 more than 71383 for the same number of pieces? This is about 20c per piece whereas the others are around 10c per piece? As most are just plates rather than specialized pieces, TLG could include say 600 pieces for the $60 price?
Will there be paper instructions this time around?
I was hoping for a track maker tub, so Master Your Adventure is almost a dream come true!
That Thwimp is adorable, and it's great to see a new biome already.
Love them! The purple poison woods, i love it. I think i’ll buy the Tanuki suit (i didn’t buy a suit yet) and of course all the small packs, and i kind of need all the purple sets as well
On the one had, YES A KOOPALING! I hope we manage to get them all one day
On the other hand, no Luigi starter? Shame...

Very confused by this comment. So are they useless or not? Lol. You are buying them for interesting parts, so they must not useless ;)
I will for sure be ordering many of those new vines through BAP!
These look good. I'd been hoping for the addition of a "poison" biome, and the maker pack looks like it will be great for custom level designs (the starter pack has a few extra plates and platforms but from my experience they can get used up fast when linking the other expansions together). Some interesting looking new parts too, including a "half platform" of sorts in the Wiggler set.
This is so cool!
Yesterday was Harry Potter 2021, today is super Mario 2021. I hope tomorrow would be star wars or city!
My fave are the Character Packs. Even if you get duplicates, they have so many great and useful parts.
With harry potter and now Mario getting revealed, I can't help but get super hyped for the Ninjago sets! Anyway, I really like the jungle-themed sets, I'm just disappointed that you don't get Mario/Luigi/Peach with any of the sets, but other than that, wow these are cool!

Haha. Unfortunately, I find it hard to imagine that they would do Luigi due to Power-up packs. It may be hard to differentiate between him and Mario if you switch them both out of their red and green suits.

Just so you know, the app is not needed to play the game. The app does two things, first it provides the instructions and shows how to play with the elements you build, although you can still download pdf instructions from Lego if you want. The app also updates Mario’s firmware to add new features (such as purple is now poison). If the app ever stops being supported, then you wouldn’t have access to firmware updates so buying sets on the second hand market 10 years from now may not be worthwhile, however, if you purchased the sets now, you will have no problem continuing to play with them in 10 or 20 years time. One possible solution to this is if you think you will purchase sets second hand later on, tell the app you have them now to update the firmware and then you will never have to worry about it not supporting features in the future. I fully intend to update my sons Mario to recognize purple, even if I don’t necessarily plan to purchase one of these new sets.
I’m glad that the pricing on these sets seems much more reasonable next year than it did this year. But why is the maker set so expensive? It seems like the maker set simply allows you to build larger layouts but doesn’t offer additional activities that would justify a higher price tag. Why not just use bricks that you already own to do this? That is what my son is currently doing.
What a great use of the flower stalk piece for the parachute goomba in the character pack!
A few observations:
1) I will join the chorus of "No Luigi?" It feels like introducing the franchise's other heroes and anti-heroes like Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Donkey Kong, Wario and Waluigi would be a nice way to keep the starter packs fresh by offering some variety.
2) While this theme is not exactly my cup of tea, I am really glad its finding its audience. Its surely a neat concept, and if lots of kids and FOL's are enjoying it, it opens the chance for more collaborations between Lego and Nintendo in coming years.
I fail at recognizing Mario Villains apparently.
Character Series 2 seems to consist of:
Para-Buzzy Beetle
Ninji
Fly-Guy
Thwimp
Poison Mushroom
A fish I don't recognize
A cloud enemy I don't recognize
What might be a Gloomba or some type of Goomba variant.
A Para-Goomba??? Isn't that what Super Mario World called the parachuting Goomba?
And that crab enemy from NSMB that seems to be a tad on the too small side.
Looks like it's off to the Wiki to find out the official names for some of these.
And I still haven't found an Urchin or Buzzy Beetle from Series 1 yet and most retailers seem to have sold out of the blind bags. So it's online only purchases for me to try and nab the last two for a complete set.
Love the idea of more, but I'd prefer a chance to catch up first on my outstanding releases before new ones hit end of December.

Crabs were also in Sunshine.
Not a bad wave, although I’m not interested in the theme myself, but the lack of Luigi is its downfall. Maybe next wave?
I think the reason there isn't a Luigi figure is the LEGO group probably thinks it's too soon.
Let's be real, Mario himself is expensive, and that's just for buying the thing actually needed to play the game. Do you think parents will be happy learn just a few months later that you'll need to buy ANOTHER expensive figurine in addition to the sets and costumes? This line is already a bit of a tough sell, so it would probably be best to enhance what you can do with one figure that's already out than double-dip.

Too soon? They released like 30 sets all at once. It's not like people would need to buy a second figure.
It's like saying it's too soon for another collectable figure series, we just had one 4 months ago.

I think this is different from normal sets and minifigure series. Mario and theoretically Luigi are electronic toys. LEGO likely would want to keep them both in kits at $60. This is unlike normal sets where prices can vary, and minifigure series usually have a low enough price to where you can get one for a few bucks.
That and with Luigi, it's likely that you will need him for some sort of special mechanic. No Luigi means not having whatever that may be, which might be a bit annoying after someone relatively recently bought a Mario.
Tanooki better have a tail.
Although it's not a favorite with AFOLs (obviously since they're not the target demographic), my sons and I have been enjoying the Mario sets and their creativity. So it's not minifig scale boohoo get over it.
So they didn't do a Luigi starter pack? I mean I understand that Mario is really all you need but it still seems kind of strange. I don't recognize the machine build in 71380, is it an original idea or is it from some obscure Mario game I haven't played?
The characters in the new character packs are:
Goomba with parachute
Crab
Para-Beetle
Thwimp
Foo
Poison Mushroom
Flyguy
Spiny Cheep-Cheep
Ninji
Bone Goomba

The proper name is "Huckit Crab", just to correct you.
No Luigi? Boooooooooooo
I should be into this, I love Mario, I love LEGO, but I just can't get on board. Something about it feels like not enough LEGO, it's off balance somehow.

It's for little kids. The large scaled Mario is cool but these sets are for the duplo to young children.
Not for the Afol or Tfol.

Maybe it's Mario's Time Machine, lol
I have been buying the Mario theme sets not to play with but to keep them in their original colorful boxes. They look superb as part of an unopened collection. I mean Lego and Super Mario? So neat..

These sets are spot on Super Mario 3 for the Nes.
Looks great.
huckit crab looks like the sonic crab enemy, because they have ninji in the lineup who originated in mario 2, the fourth expansion could be warts castle from mario 2?

It’s way too soon for Luigi. Assuming you are buying this set either for a birthday or the holidays, Lego needs to wait at least a year, maybe two, before releasing another outrageously priced electronic figure. And when they do, Mario and Luigi better be able to do something amazing together that really increases the play value or there is no way I’m spending that kind of money again.
I actually think Lego would be better off having Luigi be a friend, along the lines of Yoshi and Toad. However, I feel that Luigi will maybe come out once the retire the Mario starter set. There will always need to be a starter set available on the market in order for expansion sets to sell, and I would think they would want to change it up after a few years in hopes that they may get some people who want to purchase both starter sets as I doubt anyone would buy a second Mario set unless their kids have major sharing issues.
I wonder how 71386 Huckit Crab's claw is attached, it seems it can move?
I've been taking a closer look at these set images, and the Wiggler set comes with two gigantic purple tiles. I need them!
If anyone's wondering, Tanooki Mario's tail is just a 2D printing on the back of his suit, lol.
@Norikins said:
"Tanooki better have a tail."
It's printed on, which isn't ideal but makes sense—a molded tail would change Mario's dimensions and possibly interfere with him fitting into some of the various contraptions in certain sets.
If you still don't "get it," try opening one of these sets around a 4-8 year old who is obsessed with Mario / Bowser. It's absolutely fantastic for them. My five year old had been (of his own accord, oblivious to the existence of Lego Mario) designing his own Mario dungeons out of cardboard and spending hours playing with them.
His head nearly exploded when I opened the starter course for him.
"Building on the existing biomes of water (blue), fire (red), sand (yellow) and grass (green), this second wave of products introduces Soda Jungle, a whole new biome characterised by its purple colour, which represents poison, that enables children to experience different reactions from LEGO Mario and new ways of playing."
Ah yes, all those children who love dipping Mario into poison to see how he'll react.
From everything I've seen and read, this might be the best combination of electronics and Lego since the Light Brick. The starter set is expensive but not outrageous, and there are plenty of cheap add-ons as well as some mindblowing ones (at mindblowing prices, naturally). The character sets are tempting even to people like me who are not (definitely not) going to buy any of the game layouts. Seems to exploit Lego's flexibility combined with a deservedly popular game that AFOLs as well as kids enjoy. I think TLG have a classic theme here (and I think they know it, too)!
