Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 10

Posted by ,

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has received notable attention during the last four days, in which case the subject seems likely to change today, based upon previous calendars.

Find out after the break...

In fact, the Sequel Trilogy theming continues with D-O! This character has appeared in three previous sets, each costing considerably more than 75279 Star Wars Advent Calendar. I am pleased to see the droid again here, featuring impressive detail across the conical head and distinctive uni-wheel body. The green highlights seem especially attractive.

D-O features a useful connection point towards the back of his head, allowing him to wear this festive hat. Admittedly, this is an exceptionally simple method of combining Christmas with Star Wars theming but I think it works nicely here, particularly because unique festive minifigures are included elsewhere in the calendar. 75184 Star Wars Advent Calendar, released during 2017, failed in that regard.

Overall - 4.0 - Despite appearing elsewhere, D-O seems a worthy addition to this Advent Calendar and I appreciate his seasonal headwear!

All this is doing is reminding me how distinctly non-memorable a lot of the sequel trilogy characters have been (despite being prominent in merchandise). I can't even remember what D-0 did on screen.

I'll take it, but...sigh.

Oh well, can I hope for a Christmas Phasma someday? I actually liked Phasma, at least visually!

My first D-O fig, he is much smaller than I had expected tbh. Nice to get though , cheapest way to get him.

I loved D-O in the movie, and really love this figure.

Character made solely for merchandising, and probably the worst example of such in Star Wars.

I loved D-0 so much, I'm so happy to be able to get him in a much cheaper set

He didn't do anything, except a couple weird robot chirps.

Yeah.... the Ewoks served a purpose thematically in addition to the plot- they're probably the best example of this. BB8 is vital to the sequel trilogy's plot. The porgs were necessary for VFX purposes- the island where Last Jedi was filmed was overrun with birds, and it was impractical to erase all of them in each shot. D-0 served no purpose in the plot whatsoever. Even though all the other characters were created for merchandising purposes, they all fit fairly organically into the Star Wars films, at least in my opinion.

By in United Kingdom,

I like the way the festive piece can be discarded so after the Christmas period you have the original character for your collection.

With respect to the character design, I cant avoid thinking smoke alarm and traffic cone whenever I see this droid. Obviously nothing to do with TLG but it does seem very rushed and thrown together by Disney.

I'm very happy to get him in a much cheaper set, too. It's cute and smaller than I expected. I was quite surprised to find printing on both sides!

Move over Phasma, Maul and Jar Jar: This is the worst Star Wars «character» ever.

Yeah, like even BB-8 had plot significance and the porgs were background things, he was very much shoehorned in as sloppily as possible

The lego one is pretty good

How is Maul a bad character? Not to dis your opinion, but I genuinely want to know what is not to like about him.

I get phasma, and everybody hates Jar Jar, but most people like Maul in some way.

Too bad Resistance didn’t get more sets, or we could have had her all gold subordinate to go with her.

??Silver and gold, silver and gold...??

D - 0 with a Christmas hat looks like a blow dryer blew its own hair back.

D-O was supposed to play the role of symbolism with Rey and Kylo with force heal; BB-8 “revived” him with giving him battery life from his own power cell and it was a metaphor of how Rey gave her life force to Ben and Ben vice versa, other than that connection D-O was a money grab

You can't be a real Star Wars fan if you say that Maul is the worst character - watch SW Rebels and TCW.

By in Australia,

I understand D-O was only conceptualised to replace BB-8 and Porg toys on the shelf, but he sure is cute in LEGO form!

Still one of the most pointless Star Wars characters though, along with Beaumont Kin and that slug thing on the Millennium Falcon.

Rose deserved more.

@lamby750:
Or you can flip it around and at least you got a Santa hat out of the deal.

@Keegan_MC:
Ah, the old Shakespeare trick of, “If (circumstance) is (emotion), then twice as much (circumstance) is twice as much (emotion).” The only problem is Shakespeare was Shakespeare, and nobody ever accused anyone involved with the sequels of being Shakespeare, so it just ends up being, “If (clumsily written attempt to tug at your heartstrings) is (eye roll), then twice as much (clumsily written attempt to tug at your heartstrings) is twice as much (eye roll).”

@kialan:
Duel of the Fates is not only the hands-down best lightsaber duel ever filmed, but one of the best sword fights in general ever filmed. Darth Maul could have been a hack telemarketer and he’d still be a better character on the strength of DotF alone.

By in Norway,

I'm just talking about movie Maul, the character-less stuntman who has one cheesy line before being cut in half. The coolest thing they did with Maul was to kill him off.

My first D-O, I'll take it. Thankfully Lego didn't put this one behind door 24!

I suppose if the sequels had much of a plot, BB-8 would be vital to it...

By in Canada,

There isn't one character from the true saga, I-VI, who I don't love. That includes Jar Jar.

There isn't one "original" character from the sequels who I don't loathe. Those that had any potential, like Rey or maybe BB-8, were wasted in poor writing.
