Overall, this year has been less exciting to me for LEGO — the only two themes to blow me away, both new this year at that, were DOTS and Super Mario.

Favourite Minifig: was thinking Tattooga, but it's gotta be SW1113: The Child

Favourite set: 21324 123 Sesame Street. (It stood between that and 75978 Diagon Alley, but as I really think Lego should release more 16+/18+ sets that aren't super expensive and super big, it was a pretty easy choice after all.)

Favourite set costing below $40: It could be just about any of the random bags in Super Mario Character Pack Series 1, but as I have to pick one I'll go with 71361-5 Bullet Bill. (Had 75294 Bespin Duel and 77904 Nebulon-B Frigate been available worldwide I probably would have chosen one of them.)

Favourite minifigure: Seeing as the Super Mario characters count as minifigs, I'll go with another from Character Pack Series 1 (also available in another set): MAR0014: Bob-omb.

No truly great 2020 sets that I could see. I bought a fair bit of LEGO this year, but nearly all was from 2019's selection.

All in all, I must say that LEGO really hasn’t really put forth much that I desired this year. Nothing really made me super excited, but it wasn’t a horrible year either. I have 2 main focuses in my collection: Modulars and DC Superheroes. And although neither had me super excited, I was satisfied.
Prior to locking myself into my pod, I did make the prior trip for the year’s modular, 10270: Bookshop. I was happy to return to the two 16-stud wide sets which allows for more versatility and the unique colors and addition of another townhouse was nice. I also liked the new tree. Both had their weaknesses which have been listed by many, but it was the set that I wanted to buy. No other above $40 set really appealed enough to me this year. Last year, I had to buy almost all of the space sets, but this year no collection appealed.
I did love the fact that we finally got something I’ve (we’ve) been asking for for years, in 11010: White Baseplate. Finally, a way to lock down our snow scenes. This easily becomes my under $40 item for this year! The DC minifigures would probably fall into second, if it wasn’t for the separate minifigure category. In its place, I’ll go with 60253: Ice-Cream Truck, which at least was a set I had to buy. It is always good when I can add a unique vehicle to my city that fits on the road plates.
71026: Flash, which is my favorite from a set with several great characters to add to my city. I loved that this set was heavy with golden-age versions of my favorite characters which fit better into the retro modular builds. For this reason, 71026: Huntress, 71026: Batman, and 71026: Wonder Woman finish out my next favorites.

Best set 71374 NES - my son is a massive Nintendo fan, and this was the first set in years that was preordered. Yes its a Box, but there are lots of fun build techniques in that box

Best set under $40 - 76895 Ferrari F8 - it came out a long time ago so many folks may have forgotten it but this is a fantastic set. Greats parts, a fun build, and you can sit two minifigures in it. It looks like a great MOC.

Best Minifigure - 71028 Professor Pomona Sprout - this was about the only Minifig this year that I wanted - i’m sure its not everyones cup of tea, but having a minifig of Miriam Margoyles just makes me happy

Tough choice between Barracuda Bay and CNY Temple Fair for best set, but if I have to choose, it’ll be the Temple Fair due to the stunning temple build.

As for best minifigure, I really liked Fred/George Weasley of the Harry Potter CMF (George if I have to choose one, since he’s got the marauder’s map)

Best set: 80105 Chinese New Year Temple Fair - intricate and atttractice build, with lots of interesting parts in new colours, no stickers, lots of good prints, and great minifigures. Unrivalled quality that would be great to see in other themes.

Best set under $40: 76142 Avengers Speeder Bike Attack - great $20 play set for kids with a cool bike build, and a jet pack for the villain to chase with it. Plus three good minifigures including two popular heroes.

Best minifigure: COLHP24 Albus Dumbledore - fantastic update of the Richard Harris version, to match the quality of the CMF Michael Gambon one from 2018.

Best set: 71722 - Ninjago Dungeons is a detailed location playset that looks great, is a generous parts pack and its a working RPG game. To me this is a perfect overall Lego experience. And it's ideal for pirates and castle settings.

Best set <40$ - 60249 - this set feels like the golden era classic lego from the year 1988. Looks good, well priced, with nice printed parts and brilliant working sweeping "mechanism". And it sells for 10$ or less. Amazing set!

Favourite minifig - i'm not into minifigs, but my vote goes for NJO565 even though i don't own it. There is something eye catching about that minifig.

My favorite set released in 2020 is the grand piano 21323 and my favorite set released in 2020 that is under $40 is The Mandalorian & The Child 75317

I have not really gotten as much this year as I have in the past; a lot of the big sets that I would've liked to pick up were just always sold out. So I'll just submit some of the favorites that I purchased this year.

Favorite Set(s): 21051: Tokyo or 80104: Lion Dance (Former has been my favorite Skyline model, and the latter had excellent designs of the lions and temple)

Favorite Under $40: 60267: Safari Off-Roader (Just hit all the right notes for a City vehicle, plus a lion!)

Favorite Minifigs: HP260: Padma Patil / HP261: Parvati Patil (They're pretty much the same with different coloration, but I appreciate the diversity they add)

This is tough as I think it has been an extremely strong year for Lego. A few honourable mentions go to:
75318 The Child - such a great display piece and looks so cute!
10274 ECTO-1 - this release came out of nowhere, but glad it came because it's a very accurate and stunning build with clever functions hidden inside.
75290 Mos Eisley Cantina - a set that finally does justice to an iconic location. Fantastic minifigures too.
10270 Bookshop - not my favourite of the modulars but a great display piece nonetheless and adds some vibrant colours to my modular street.
31200 The Sith - after sitting on the fence about this set I picked it up on sale and it's absolutely fantastic, looks amazing in each configuration. Plus, the packaging was really nicely presented and the accompanying soundtrack was interesting.

In the end my vote goes to:

Favourite Set: 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System - bought the set on a bit of a whim as I have no nostalgic connection to this console. However, I was blown away by the fantastic build and finished product. The scrolling screen is a marvel. I also love how it integrates with Lego Mario.

Under $/£40: 75317 The Mandalorian and the Child - I'm not a massive fan of Brickheadz but this double pack is easily the best; some great techniques for Mando's helmet and I love the Child's baby carrier. For £17.99 RRP you can't go wrong.

Favourite Minifigure: idea077 Cookie Monster - having received 21324 123 Sesame Street for Xmas a few days ago I fell in love with all the minifigs, but especially Cookie. Whilst being simple it captures him perfectly; it's just so surreal owning a fig of a cultural icon!

Even though, I am mostly a Technic guy, my favourite set of the year would be:
Best set of 2020: 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay.

The Sian would come lower as it does not offer much more than the Bugatti (i.e. it might be a better execution but offers no new techniques).

If 42113 would have been released as planned, I would have considered it as best set of the year (nice design and lots of functions in a mid-size set - and motorized without the need of apps or bluetooth)

The piano would be a very strong contender but might not have as broad an appeal. No one can't underestimate the value nostalgia brings (box art and all!)

As I also collect HP, I think HP Hedwig would be a great set for under 40 (above 40 in Canada) but for general appeal to most, I would go with:
Best set under $40: 60267 Safari Off-Roader (Lego MUST produce more animals not just for CMF). Lego must also produce accessory packs with just animals in it (farm animals, wild animals, etc)

I am not an avid minifig collector, so to me, the most novel one (but not the rarest)
Best minifig: the child

Best set is 75292, the Razor Crest. Hands down. Although 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina is a close second.

Best set under $40 is 75267 Mandalorian Battle Pack.

Best minifig: Garindan. I never knew I wanted him as a figure, but now..

So, I am tilted towards Star Wars, especially when buying stuff. If I‘d just judged inventiveness and boldness regardless of the theme the best set 2020 had to be 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay.

It looks like I might be in a minority of one... but mine is 51515 the new Mindstorms Robot Inventor set. I now have two of them.
The others I don't know but I'll say the 40410 Christmas Carol set and the Scrooge figure from that set. That's about the only set I can remember...

Not really that interested in minifigs, so haven't got a favorite there. If I was forced to pick one I would choose the orange Classic Spaceman that came with the book about minifigures.

Actually, the Crocodile Locomotive might well be my favorite set of the last five years. The only set to me that comes even close would be 21322 - Pirates of Barracuda Bay, if only for the nostalgic value of that awesome retro Legoland packaging.

For a sub 40€ set I also loved the Christmas wreath, but unfortunately I never had a chance to get it as it was sold out almost immediately.
Also nice was the Safari Jeep in the City theme, which was also hard to get, but at least this one I managed to pick up in the end.

Currently, my only 2020 set is 71721 Skull Sorcerer's Dragon and I haven't built it yet. So I'm mainly picking based on what I've seen in the database. There were many cool sets this year, but none that outright stole the show for me, so I have to give some honorable mentions....

Looking at only standard minifigures: Darth Vader with Red Christmas Sweater (SW1021)
I'm not much into minifigs, so this was a tricky selection, but Toad is my favorite Mario character, along with Toadette (MAR0011). Of standard minifigs, I would totally pick Pink Zane (NJO561) if he had the original Zane face, but alas! he has the Ninjago Movie one. Other honorable mentions go to Space Fan (COL363) and The Child (SW1113).

For the purposes of objectivity, I’d like to separate my favourite from what I think is the best set of the year.

Favourite:

It’s a close tie between Diagon Alley and the Bookshop. The intricately detailed buildings are simply a sight to behold for any AFOL wishing to fill up their shelves with fantastic displays.

Best Set of the Year:

Pirates of Barracuda Bay - When nostalgia and brilliant building techniques are packed in one set, it easily becomes your best bet for 2020. It perfectly embodies everything great about LEGO: creative use of parts, ingenuity of the builds, playability and display-ability, value for money, and the worthiness of both time and money spent for the set.

Runner up: The Grand Piano

When music and LEGO combine, it’s truly something else. This could (or maybe even should) easily have been the best set of the year. But the overall appeal of the Barracuda Bay puts the icing on the cake.

It’s rare that you get a lot of neat stuff from a $20 LEGO set. That in itself is simply magical.

This is the first year that I have ever preordered a set and purchased sets on the day they were released. I was so excited all year about the Razor Crest which I preordered May the 4th, and it would have been my favorite had the surprise NES set not snuck up just a month ahead of it. I only need one word to describe the NES set, perfect.

From a parenting point of view however, I would have to say that the Mario Starter Set is far and away the best Lego set of the year and possibly even ever.

Under $40: Bespin Duel 75294

This is a tough one, but I simply can’t emphasize just how well done this set is, and while this scene is depicted in the Cloud City set (and I previously Bricklinked the parts from that set to build it), it’s amazing that perhaps the most memorable scene in the Star Wars franchise, and maybe movies in general, only now was given its first stand alone set. It’s a shame how this set was a limited release because I know many people here would have loved to get their hands on it.

I like LEGO and I have kids (and we even have Mario games on several Nintendo systems), but my kids showed zero interest in this theme and since I don't see the appeal either I don't think your statement holds true for all. Come to think of it, none of the families with kids I know have any LEGO Mario sets. Small wonder, seeing how ridiculously little you get for your money.
In a year with so much competition from other great LEGO sets (and themes), it's hard to see why these sell at all tbh.

I think you should put this off until April: Maybe by then, Lego will have produced some of the sets that I want to buy and build. It is hard to say one set is better than another until you build them. Just my opinion.

Perhaps not the winners, but the ones I had to buy when they were available. I had to convince my wife to allow me buying them!!

Favorite Set: 75978 Diagon Alley. Astounding building techniques and jaw dropping attention to detail! A delight to build and display, with a fantastic minifigure selection. This was a tough decision because 21323 Grand Piano was also incredible set.

Favorite Set below $40: 76895 Ferrari F8 Tributo. The parts usage and building techniques are a joy to behold, especially for a $20 set! At this price point you get 275 pieces (that's 7.3 cents a piece at full price), and so it also makes for a great parts pack. Even if you're not a car person (which I'm not), that a car can be so realistic at this scale is incredible, especially a car with so many curves.

I did not build the Pirates of Barracuda Bat which I received for Christmas. I imagine that is going to be the runaway winner this year. Can’t wait to build it soon!
