What is your favourite minifigure of 2020?

Posted by ,

LEGO has produced 818 different minifigures and characters during 2020, almost seventy of which were nominated by Brickset members as their favourite released this year.

The twenty most popular submissions have therefore been forwarded to this concluding poll, that includes minifigures from Star Wars, NINJAGO, Collectable Minifigures and other themes. Vote for your favourite minifigure of 2020 after the break...

Please note that characters, which do not qualify as traditional minifigures because they feature fewer than two standard minifigure components, are included in the poll.

What is your favourite minifigure of 2020?

Other minifigures which received numerous nominations and nearly qualified for this poll include Pink Zane, the 332nd Company Clone Trooper and Momaw Nadon.

You can still submit nominations for your favourite set of 2020 and your favourite set of 2020 costing less than $40.

Which minifigure did you vote for? Let us know in the comments. The result will shortly be announced, early in 2021.

Indeed not but he undoubtedly qualifies as a 'character', as explained in the article.

Glad to see the 501st Jet Trooper on there, that was my original choice.

How far short of being in was the 332nd company clone? I really was struggling to pick one off of this list, they’re all amazing!

Orange spaceman would have been my second choice. But as it is, I had to vote for the centaur. Been waiting for one for many, many years.

By in United Kingdom,

Such a tough list, some great figs there. Had to go with Murtle as its such a good likeness. But was tempted by so many, especially the Spaceman.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Definitely Asoka Tano! I have her and she’s awesome!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I love Moaning Myrtle and I am glad to see her on the list... I didn't realise how much Shirley Henderson resembled a lego minifigure until I saw that one

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Tough choice between Big Bird, Sea Rescuer and Darth Vader Christmas Jumper. Went for Big Bird in the end - he really stands out.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Super Mario for me, he may not be the conventional Minifigure but that's probably why I like him more, he brings something new for LEGO and something really creative. His packed with play features and the detailing on him is really good and he also looks creepy and cute at the same time XD.

Gravatar

The addition of the hover pop-up really shines here when trying to decide who to vote on.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Since Ponda Baba didn't make it, I'm voting for Garindan.

I can't see the list again after I voted. :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

When considering this I went for innovation in design and accuracy while still conforming to what I think of as a minifigure. Totally subjective, I know, but for me that rules out Mario (not minifig enough) and things like the orange Spaceman (not innovative enough). It came down to Big Bird and the Child. I went for the Child due to the fact that it is the first baby Minifig with a custom head, the accuracy and the fact it made my wife go 'aaawwww!' when she saw it!

But technically, the Centaur isn't officially released until 2021.

By in South Korea,

Went for the Viking because I wanted to vote for something not licensed. Did have Garindad (SW Imperial Spy) on my short list with the 1939 Batman from the DC CMF Series. Surprised no Marvel minifigs made it, but I didn't have any on my short list either (although Black Widow with the arm printing was almost there).

By in United Kingdom,

The annual debate about minifigures and characters is always enjoyable!

Firstly, a LEGO character is defined as any figure which is intended to represent a living being or robot but comprises fewer than two standard minifigure components.

I think an argument could be made to omit something like Mario but there are many other figures which do not technically qualify as minifigures but would be considered their close equivalents and should definitely be taken into consideration. Teevee, Awakened Warriors, various Minecraft figures, LEGO babies or any bigfig, for example. A decision needed to be made and Mario had received more than enough nominations.

With regard to the title asking for your favourite minifigure of 2020, that is much catchier than 'What is your favourite minifigure, mini-doll, bigfig, baby or character of 2020?'

Or call it minifigure and stick with it.
This right here is as much confusing, as it is unfair to the minifigure."

Within the context of LEGO, the word 'character' specifically refers to figures which comprise fewer than two standard minifigure parts. Typical minifigures are not, therefore, 'characters'.

@TomKazutara Does it really matter that much to you? Its just a fun little poll within our community and your starting to suck the fun out of it. At the end of the day even if Mario wins is it really gonna have any significant impact on your life or what lego sets you buy? Just let it go.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think people moaning about Mario need to think that the The Child (Baby Yoda) figure isn't a minifigure in the traditional sense yet people are fine with him being included. I don't see how people think Mario shouldn't allowed to be in this list when he is a minifigure.

Mario for the win I say, best figure of 2020, I'd call him a Big-Fig.

People who voted on that Mario aberration should be forbidden to buy Lego sets.

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in United States,

I said Skull Sorcerer, but TeeVee or Unagami were some I liked even more.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Admitting that Mario "thing" into this minifigure voting has got to be a joke.

It is nothing at all like a minifig. By that logic you could also allow a character that is represented only as a sticker or whatever.

Total BS. Then again, this thing is so bad, it shouldn't possibly have any changes of winning anyway.

I voted for Orange Spaceman by the way, but even if Ahsoka or Dumbledore or even that fanservice 500-something legion fig that seems so popular with some wins I would be happier than to see that Mario electro-puppet come out on top.

Gravatar
By in France,

The child of course! He has already won :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very glad the Sea Rescuer made the short list. Orange spaceman would be my second choice. Mario the non-minifigure comes in just behind smashing my toe on a table leg, ugh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have Mister Miracle and think he's a good minifig, but he's so obscure. Other DC series minifigs were equal in quality or better.

Gravatar
By in France,

though my vote isn't in the list, dumbledore is the best minifig I've actually seen for real this year. surprised by some of the options, like sea rescuer who looks a lil generic (I guess orange spaceman too, but I don't question it anymore lol) My vote was originally general kozu, who I have, but is still in its box.

Are Bigfigs "Minifigures" - Beyond the name difference, I think, yes. So, too... is Mario. In a traditional sense? No! However, Mario is an amazing work of art...IMO, both inside (tech) and out (somewhat buildable and his verbal and nonverbal engagement).

By in United States,

I love all the comments where people express their love for their favorites. It’s joyful and fun, and in the spirit of the poll. That’s why I come to Brickset!

I dislike all the comments complaining about the rules or trashing options that other people chose as their favorites. It’s like hanging out at a Complaint Desk in your spare time; who needs that?

Praise what you love, and ignore what you don’t like. Every Lego set doesn’t need to appeal to everyone.

(I personally voted for Christmas Vader, because he was so surprising and joyful and fun!)

Razor crest Mandalorian & UCS batwing Lawrence figure!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m not a big minifig person but there are some fantastic choices here. Redbeard, tournament knight, Viking, and orange spaceman are great installations in classic LEGO themes. Dumbledore and moaning myrtle are both just spot on. And ugly sweater darth Vader is just fantastic. I’ll probably go with Christmas Vader in the end.

Not at all.
It is quite simple. The question is "What is your favorite MINIFIGURE of 2020?"
That Mario thing is a brick-built electronic component. Not a minifigure. Hence the "hate" by those who don't want to see this being allowed to take away votes from real minifigs.

Other than that, Mario is no Italian-American plumber, he's a Japanese concoction of a stereotypical nature. Originally he was called Jump man by the way. Probably should have left it at that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

While I personally disagree with the inclusion of both “The Child” and dead-eyed “Mario,” I respect Huw’s rationale and CaptRex101’s added explanation. It’s pretty clear “The Child” will win, which is fine and completely understandable, given the contest specifications.

I still voted for “Orange Spaceman,” which I originally nominated as well.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

If anyone bothered to browse the list of the 818 "minifigures" to vote for, you'd have noticed that not only Mario but also all the brickbuilt characters from the Super Mario theme count as minifigures at Brickset. I guess they do as Lego themselves count them as such, no? The Friends minidolls obviously count as well, as does the one piece Harry Potter baby in 71028-7.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Delighted to see the Viking make it on to the list. I'm not sure Lego take any notice of polls like these so I'm not sure any "message" will be received, though I completely agree with cflyg "Once a Lego classic space builder, always a Lego classic space builder." It would be great to see Lego Classic Space make a return. Hopefully Brickhammer's Viking Village will get the Lego treatment and we'll see it as an official set in the future. My Vikings need a home!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Some great choices!
Darth Vader ugly sweater, Skull Sorcerer, The Child (too tiny to really count as a minifig), Dumbledore, Orange Spaceman, etc...
But in the end, I voted for the Centaur - so cool and unusual!
Happy New Year all!

Gravatar

From the other poll, I voted for the 332nd Company Clone Trooper but since it didn't make it, I went with the COL361: Tournament Knight - Minigure. Classic Castle is nostalgic and it just looks great! I wish Lego would bring back the classic Castle, I dont mean like the nexo knights, I didn't really care for the "space knights".

Contrary to you I am not resorting to personal insults and never have iirc. Plus, I am not bashing the opinions of people but the product itself and its inclusion in this contest. I am not even bashing the product designer personally, because I am sure he/she did the best job they could, given the constraints laid out by TLG/Nintendo. If anything, it might be disrespectful towards the company producing it. Nothing more, nothing less. You otoh are the one being disrespectful by your comment.

The only thing I am indeed bashing is the fact that something that is clearly not a minifigure is allowed into a voting titled "what is your favorite minifigure". That I generally don't like the whole Mario theme is not the reason for my bashing the aforementioned decision to include the Mario device, for lack of a better term, into this contest.
My favorite current themes are Harry Potter and Ninjago. But if there was a device like that Mario from one of those themes I would still criticize the decision to allow it to enter the voting.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Of that list, I already have Dumbledore and moaning Myrtle; I will get the centaurs in due time.

I had to debate long and hard between Orange Spaceman, Ahsoka Thano and the child.

In the end, even though I also think Mario should not be there, I went for the child - an illegal choice by my own definition*.

* To me a minifig should have: (1) be roughly 5 bricks high (can vary for length of legs or dresses), (2) legs and torso(without arms) roughly 2 studs wide, (3) have two upper limbs, (4) preferably have two lower limbs (some minifig have tail or 'cloud' and its fine). (5) have an upward peg to install what would normally serve as a 'head' (robot or monster heads are fine)
By this definition, Mario, Bigfigs and babyfigs would not be there.

So, from the options proposed (whatever they are called or how they are defined) , I selected the child. This is the way.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Mario gets my vote. Sure he's not a 'traditional' minifig, but anyone who has actually used it and played with it can surely not help but be incredibly impressed with all the functions and playability is stuffed into the character. It's completely innovative and has miles more playability than any normal minifigure.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've fallen for the Child craze...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Almost went w/Orange Spaceman, as I just got the Minifigure book...However:
Mister Miracle...why? So many reasons:
It's a near perfect representation of one of Jack 'The King' Kirby's finest non-Marvel works for DC's Forth World/New Gods (yeah; I said "near perfect" because the figure needs 1-2 clear round studs/plates for under feet, to represent his 'flying discs').
The character been around for a loooooong time; and I grew as a fan w/his run in the 80's Justice League (International). Now I just wish TLG would put out: Booster Gold, Blue Beetle (Ted Kord)(Ashnflash actually did a really drawing of one on his channel), and Big Barda (though they'd have to bring back the longer arms and legs). Kinda' wish they'd do a Blue Devil and Ambush Bug too, but TLG seem to be 'cutting back' on DC rather than expanding...shame...
