First glimpse of Vidiyo
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has provided us with our first glimpse of the new theme Vidiyo on its German kids page.
Not much is know about it at the moment, other than it's music and video related and it's the first result of LEGO's partnership with Universal Music that was announced last April.
The image shows a maracas-playing llama by the looks of it and I guess we'll learn more in the coming days or weeks.
Thanks to Robert at Promobricks for the news.

Oh hell yeah!
I'm scared . . .
The party has started! :)
That llama is welcome on the Pop-Up Party Bus ANYTIME!
I’ve never been so intrigued, these minifigures look interesting...
Music playing animals? Somehow I'm getting Fabuland vibes...
Oh yeh......we are saved
When it's time to party we will party hard?
Chima: the Sequel.
I like the maracas. Very 90s feel to the colours.
Not sure whether the llama with sunglasses is a bit too much of "bein' down wit da kids yo" and completely missing the mark, or if that is what kids like nowadays. I'd say that I'm way out of touch now but even as a child I wasn't in touch with what was cool.
Llamas seem to be up in popularity for some reason, and I don't understand why.
FilmCow killed Llamas with Hats years ago, Jimmy Neutron hasn't been relevant for at least 15 years, where is all the Llama love coming from?
Is it nostalgia? Is everyone rediscovering Emperor's New Groove on Disney+?
What is happening?
What?
i like the printing on the shirt, it's very 90s Nickelodeon
There was a mermaid tail piece that was leaked that had an icecream come design, so I’m guessing it’s part of this theme.
That Llama is the most dope swag thing I’ve ever seen.

Perhaps the Llama Piñatas from Fortnite are responsible, although I think The Emperor's New Groove deserves a renaissance in popularity on Disney+!

LEGO fans could never be accused of jumping to conclusions!
Vidiyo might well be terrible once the theme is actually revealed but dismissing it as garbage on the basis of one image seems rather harsh to me.
This is the Carlton Banks of Lego!
Am I the only one where 90's colour + a llama start the winamp catchfrase?
@CapnRex101: unfortunately I think even Lego fans are netizens

Some commenters on these articles wear this attitude as a badge of honor.
As for Vidiyo, I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of it!
Am I the only one who thinks this actually looks pretty fun?
Dots, the Musical
Hmmm, might have a lot of interesting parts.

Loving the colors
Fabuland 2.0 yesss
The first two comments on this article match perfectly.

Heck no!
I can't wait to hear how the goat-on-a-tree choir will sounds like.
These must be the cool relatives of the alpacas from the Friends theme last year. Looks fun!
Uh... Uuuuuuuh... Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh
I am thinking Late 80's early 90s : "Mr Motivator" and The Happy Mondays - apologies to those not in the UK or not old enough to get the references - but at least GOOGLE is now available....

Probably sounds better than most stuff on the radio.
The number of LEGO sets I get from each year has been dying hard (I only got ten from 2020) so odds are I'm not getting any of these. Regardless, the design of the llama is pretty interesting-- it reminds me of something from Just Dance, just without the uncanniness. The press release said something about a "game experience"-- could that be the app, or will it just be a Tik-Tok clone?
I didn’t know lego had a fursona
Chima
Trolls
Hidden Side
Time for the next... total flop.
Just because a couple of you AFOLs don't like something for kids doesn't mean anything. IT'S NOT FOR YOU
Looks like a party! I'm down!

Chima: The Musical
Vidiyo killed the AFOL star?
Typical stupid modern idea of music. I wasnt expecting Creator Expert level renditions of Beethoven and his piano but from what I can tell this Vidiyo thing seems like Lego Tik Tok (makes sense since they are obsessed with China at the moment...)
I was hoping this theme would provide some famous musicians in minifig form (Lego Michael Jackson, Elvis, Elton John, Queen, Ray Charles the possibilities are quite endless) and teach kids important things about music appreciation as well as encouraging music from a young age.
Instead, it reminds me of Lego Dimensions where Lego ripped off Skylanders and similar products because it was 'the thing' at the time, Lego Hidden Side has that silly app and all that.
Lego has this ignorant worldview that everything has to relate to a mobile phone. Yes, they are popular but its not like all the Lego of the 60s and 70s had to relate to transistor radios... The main problem is that Lego does these weird attempts at copying the technology market where kids are just going to choose the original option eg buy a Spotify subscription instead of buying some crazy Lego music set. Focus on what they are good at, the Lego System of Play rather then being Apple Meets Plastic Blocks. A music theme has a ton of possiblites with a music theme, which could include some connections to technology but shouldnt rely on it as the drawcard for kids.
I agree with Paperdaisy its another example of older adults trying to 'get down with the kids' its like a late 40s man rocking up to a 13 year olds party being all 'Yo yo bruh Pewdepie be in da house whats up with this crib?" I really doubt the 1990s era llama is what kids like these days, its stupid and crazy which does seem to be popular... but its definitely the generation or two before the supposed target market for this vidiyo.
Take the name for example, do kids thesedays even know what a video is? Talk about a generation gap... What next, a rapping bear with a boombox ("whats that?"), a unicorn with a fax machine? If they make a pop star plane again it will have to be Ansett Airways XD (Or Bricksett but I hate comparing this great website to a common Australian joke)

I can’t either. And I don’t get any Australian jokes, but if they are ever options, sign me up for the boombox bear rapper and faxing unicorn, please.
@Zackula and @CarolinaOnMyMind
"I can't tell if this is satire or serious."
No its not satire I was being serious. The confusion I think was where I said Australian joke, the only joke in my comment was Ansett Airways which was an Australian airline company famous in the 1980s which went broke and is now a joke or meme amongst my countrymen for something that is outdated.
I think I’ve been pretty good in recent years of being able to tell when something would be a flop. Chima, Hidden Side, Life of George, Mixels, a big wooden minifigure with plastic hands... Okay, so I also thought BrickHedz would flop (because it seemed like a blatant Funko rip-off AND I think Funko pops are dumb), but most of my gut feelings have been right.
I don’t have a good feeling about this one...nor the new road system.
The base packs are £18 each and Minifigure packs £4 each for anyone interested. (UK rrp).
Presumably Minifgure packs contain more than just a fig and will actually do something

Please tell me this remark is satire, although it’s quite likely true. As one of those “kids thesedays,” I sincerely hope my generation is not that far gone. If it is, well, we’re practically doomed. It’s a joke among some, in the US at least, that we can disable an entire generation with rotary telephone, cursive writing, and a stick-shift car. ;D"
No sorry its not satire. Perhaps you are one of the few young people with general knowledge and respect for the past. I salute you for that. Sadly I do believe we are that far gone.
I reckon your last comment is very true. Lots of kids in Australia do learn manual cars and certainly most females are quite capable of cursive handwriting, albeit no where near as good as the prior generations but the millennials do seem to have a peculiar disposition to be completely useless unless it relates to technology.
There's a video on youtube youve likely seen of two young guys idk maybe 17 years old trying to work out how to use a rotary telephone. They werent too bad actually but it did take them awhile haha.
While I love most old things I can say I definitely do NOT miss paper straws (disgusting!) and those confounded tap handles shaped like crosses. I think "Best thing since flip taps" is more appropriate then "Best thing since sliced bread' XD (slicing bread isnt that bad actually)
Cool figure, but...

I can tell I won’t be the target audience.
As for those saying we should not criticize it as we are not the target audience: of course we aren't, but even we can see when LEGO has stupid ideas that are guaranteed to flop even with the target audience. I mean it's not as if there had not been plenty of examples of TLG wasting resources on something that was clearly the wrong thing at the wrong time from the get-go. As others have pointed out, TLG is often trying to cash in on what they perceive as trendy, and as a consequence the products become shelf huggers that have to get discounted massively in order to move at all.
Just look at the list of best sellers over the years. You won't find any of these experiments mentioned there but tried and trusted stuff like City, Friends, Ninjago, Star Wars, Harry Potter or Technic.
Everything about the promo image screams 90s, which is a time I have noticed is already totally alien to kids when you tell them about it. Almost more so than the 80s.
Hell, my father is still using his old Nokia 3310 push button non-smart mobile phone. And that is newer than the 90s, yet you should have seen the look on the faces of our kids when they first saw him using it. They thought it was like from the Stone Age.
@Brickchap said:

This paragraph of horribly, insultingly out-of-touch nonsense makes clear two things: not only are you not the target market, but your opinion is of absolutely no value when discussing this subject.
Stick to what you know: your view on flip-mixer taps is spot-on!
This the result that lockdown isolation has had on Lego designers
If this is Fabuland 2, I am totally in. If it promotes the next Justin Bieber, or whatever Universal Music band they're shilling, no thanks.
I think us AFOLs have had plenty of attention in ‘20 and more to come in ‘21, let the kids have some fun with Lego without us judging it against our 18+ expectations.
That looks way more colorful, vibrant and festive than previous promotional material suggested. Previously it was more neon, electronic and such. There wasn't even the slightest indication that there would be minifigures at all! The difference is night and day. It definitely has me even more intrigued than ever.
"The image shows a maracas-playing llama..."
Say no more.
I'm in.

Totally down with your thoughts here - especially about Brickheadz! (You'll NEVER convince me they're popular - just phenomenally profitable for TLG)
BUT
I had to respond in defense of Mixels. The theme was MOST DEFINITELY NOT a flop by any metric (aside from your own aversion to it).
Strong sales across multiple years.
Excellent resale value on the early series.
Introduction of an ENTIRELY new joint system that, while the original theme has run its course, remains in use across the board today.

You do appreciate don't you that all those themes you listed started off as experiments.
Castle and Pirates were also experiments. The introduction of the mini-figure, LEGO working with plastics - experiments too. All of those things were done knowing there was a chance they could fail. We look back now and we take their success for granted, but hindsight isn't prescience.
As a mining collector, I was thinking just the other day what my collection is REALLY missing is...
... a maracas-playing llama !
You can sign me up for as many random minifigs as you can think of.
As for those saying we should not criticise the criticisers ;-) ....... do any of us really know what the next big thing is and what will just snag the zeitgeist of the target audience for this product, and before you know it it become massive - even if we don't understand (or agree) why. I look at some of the things my son Enjoys and focuses on and think ‘what the hell!’ The same way my Father did when I was a child
Also I’m sure Lego fully understand that not every new product launch will be successful, but as they say ‘innovate or die’
There's going to be an 'App' involved, isn't there? :-(
The return of Legends of Chima!
New (llama) tribe(s)!
I've been waiting for this for years!
I like anything that's got vibrant colours, I'll keep an eye on it!
Thought it was Alf at first glance
Looks like they're trying to please the furry lovers...

If it comes with a cat on a dinner plate, that’ll confirm it. HA!
And this needs Universal music license?
I thought the theme was going to include actual albums from universals back catalogue that you could scan and do your own tiktok type stuff... Now sure how brightly coloured llamas fit into that.
My wife lives on tiktok and having seen most of the things she watches none of it seems character driven. I don't think "fabuland goes to Woodstock" will mean anything to wee kids so I don't get Lego's plan for this theme.
Hopefully they release images of the sets/cubes soon so we can get a better idea of what's going on.
For those that don't mind spoiling the 'surprise' for themselves: searching a bit on Google will give you a description of the characters that will appear in the first wave.
Looks to me like they are trying to Legofy the Masked Singer & Masked Dancer shows. I need to see more but I doubt I will be buying into this theme. Hopefully we will get some interesting new parts out of it though.
I think any negativity I feel is just about whether this is going to be cringe worthy or not, because the signs look like they could point that way. If the target audience likes it, that's great. If LEGO only made stuff I liked then they wouldn't be doing a good job. And I couldn't afford or find the space for every set in the world either.
Edited to add: if they're using System parts, even if you hate the theme there is a strong chance there will be interesting parts that come out of it. LEGO's worst flops have surely been Galidor, ZNAP and similar.
ALF is back.
Ima be honest, I only write in cursive. It’s a struggle when I have to write something in print. That had nothing to do with anything, I just saw a discussion about cursive and felt the need to share. Piece out. V
Chima... Hardly a flop. Six waves of sets over three years. True, it didn't become an evergreen theme like Ninjago, but that doesn't make it a failure.
@bananaworld I do not see what is wrong with that comment. If you are concerned about my comment regarding females being good at cursive, thats not sexist its a compliment. Most women/girls I know are able to do cursive and certainly a lot better then myself and fellow men. Im not saying just because one is female one SHOULD be able to do cursive but in my experience the vast majority can and thats great! Thats not being disrespectful to women and if your offended by it well you obviously get offended by some strange things.
As for the millennial comment well you cant deny it, I am guessing you are one of them given your ridiculous comment that my 'opinion is of no value when discussing this topic.'
What or who gives you the right to decide who's opinion is and is not of value? What makes your opinion any more valuable then mine? Perhaps you disagree with some things I say but that does not make my opinion on the this Lego theme or any other topic invaluable or wrong. Its an opinion.

If that wasn't satire, you have some serious problems and also probably actually don't really get children either. Your ideas of what children might like or understand are quite wrong. I think my 6 year will quite like the single image of this theme that we have seen....and also knows what a video is....as he wants to make them and put them on Youtube.

Yes, absolutely. The entire theme is only about psychedelic llamas in sunglasses and fluorescent maracas, which Universal clearly have world copyright for...

Important question: Does the Unicorn come with a fax machine? Please say yes.
Looks like a character right out of Fortnite. I don't play but the designs are pretty cool. Then again, this may be something more along the lines of Barney the dinosaur singing preschool songs. It's too soon to tell so everyone keep your cool. ;-)

Probably Fortnite. There's a "loot llama" in the game.
Dude, if all the minifigures look like that I'm gonna love this theme. I'm a sucker for new "species" in LEGO and colorful outfits!
Is it vi-DIY-o or vidi-YO? Or both? Probably both.
These comment sections are hilarious. An by the way, llamas and alpacas are becoming really popular as fashion pictures, plush toys, interior decoration and even pets. I have no idea what started it but girl's toys and everyday items are full of them.
My guess it that this will be very similar to Trolls (which seems about to go EOL), so the sets will feature bright colors and a music theme, but with different characters and possibly a more modern/urban setting. There's most likely an app involved, but as a full-fledged Youtube/Tiktok-like video service seems like too much of a potential can of worms I suspect it'd be more like making Flash animations - possibly with a DLC element where you buy sets to unlock characters and songs.
I guess the sets will sell reasonably well to those currently buying Trolls but that the app (and actual longevity of the theme) is more iffy, especially as it has to compete with countless existing apps with more functionality.
