NINJAGO City Gardens available now!
Posted by Huw,
71741 NINJAGO City Gardens is now available at LEGO.com to LEGO VIPs in Europe and the UK which hopefully signals that it will launch at midnight in other time zones later on.
The 5,685 piece set, which is priced at £274.99 / $299.99 / 299.99€, contains 19 minifigures including an exclusive Gold Master Wu celebrating the 10th anniversary of the theme.
Our review sample was held up at the border following difficulties caused by Brexit but it should arrive today so expect CapnRex101's detailed review soon.
Note: LEGO.com is now shipping orders to the UK, so Britons can order with confidence.

Ordered
*gets popcorn to watch the chaos that is a major set on launch day*
Will patiently wait for the comments reporting problems with the website! Ahah
Just kidding guys, good shopping evening to you all!
Ordered! It went very smooth on the site and I slap on the extra costs for express shipment, can’t get it fast enough! Got the 40416 Ice Skating Rink GWP too, not bad!
Got mine as well, no problems so far! Can't wait to get my hands on it.
Ordered. No problems at all.
Well, I hate to be the harbinger of complaints but it's giving me no option to add to basket; it still says coming soon. I'm logged into my VIP account too.
Just as well I didn't have any intentions of buying!
I’m annoyed: the site tells me
L'accès VIP en avant-première débutera le 14/01/21.
Bientôt disponible
And we’re the 14th and i’m VIP.
Take my money please!

I, as several others, got our orders in just over midnight, but now (40 minutes later/past midnight) I see the same as you, it just says "coming soon" and it is not possible to add to the bag, strange!

I've noticed that as well (this is after buying it earlier). Not sure if this is a quirk of scaling the website for more visitors, whether they've run out, or that they went too early and pulled it.
Guess we'll find out as this progresses...
I’m guessing there is a limited stock of VIP allotment. Which doesn’t make much sense?
Are there embargoes on the reviews? I'm wondering if I should be expecting reviews of the set to be posted from reviewers based outside the U.K. tomorrow morning.
I had it in my shopping basket a few minutes ago. Went away to redeem some VIP points and returned. I then got an error on the basket page and it was removed. There is now no option on the set page to buy it, only to add to my wish list. I now also get an error checking out with Paypal for my other items.
Lets see what happens after midnight.
I will see
Where are the Hype X Ninjago clothing though? I'm gonna hang on till 12am.
Why are there always people who buy these kinds of sets for full RRP on day one? What's wrong with them?
Patience is a virtue. Won't be long before this gets heavily discounted like every other set. Bought my Ninjago City and Harbour years ago and still haven't found time to build them, so I am in absolutely no hurry to get this one. Eventually, sure, but not for that kind of money.
So did this go live in the UK at 11pm then and not midnight?!?
"VIP early access starts 14/01"
Doesn't look like it to me...

No guarantee whatsoever that big D2C's like this would ever go in the sale.
It says "Coming Soon" even though I am logged in as a VIP....
Not a problem as I cannot afford it yet. But I would be very frustrated if I was seriously going to buy it.
Can you imagine another multi million dollar/pound company with this level of ineptitude for its on-line business on its own website? No, me neither.
If it were not so successful and unique in its set up it would be prone for a hostile takeover by someone able to provide a proper service.

I agree; this is also a LEGO exclusive so any sales will be up to LEGO and it doesn't seem like they put sets like this on sale often.
It's weird how this went without a regular LEGO announcement, we only got that Singapore message and that's it.
I was waiting to buy it on the Irish site since before midnight and had the same problem; "coming soon" status and not changing. It seems like they hadn't allocated many units of the set for this VIP first come event. Hopefully it was poor planning on their part and not an annoying marketing ploy.
Oh well, maybe I'll buy it later in the year if I feel like it. I still think the original ninjago city is far superior and I have that & the docks set.
Couldn't buy it at either shortly before midnight or after midnight. Failed in two PCs, phone and different browsers and logging out and back in again. I'm just hoping it will fly under the radar for a while so it won't go OOS within minutes of Lego's website getting its act together.

Just to add, also no guarantee TLG has or will have their distribution/manufacturing up to pre-pandemic levels before this retires. Even with the city and docks that did eventually go on sale it wasn’t a surplus stock situation, it was a selling off remaining stock prior to retirement so lots of people didn’t get NC on sale either and now they’re looking at $500 for a copy.

See https://brickset.com/article/57303/ninjago-city-gardens-more-details and the similar sentiment expressed in many of the comments there!
First time I ever try to do a day one purchase (commited to converting my VIP points to vouchers so I could get the order in quickly) and surprise surprise, the dismal LEGO online experience rears its ugly head again. I was hoping to get the Skating Rink GWP to offset the cost, but now who knows if that will be available by the time LEGO lets anyone else buy the Gardens!
May have to buy the Police Station instead this time round and save the Gardens for later in the year.
@huw yes the Brexit delivery situation to UK is not good. Lego are getting a roasting on how they have handled it on numerous sites and Lego Facebook groups as they have been giving vague responses. They are aware of Brexit and COVID store closeures so should be holding back on big releases like this, movie companies are. How about an article about it with a Lego response as to why they are doing what they are doing re Brexit UK and still releasing during COVID??. or are you not allowed to do that?

IIRC the ice rink is only available until 31 Jan but the Gardens goes on general sale on 1 Feb. I highly doubt they’ll be anymore stock available for VIPs before general release. It won’t stop me checking but I’m not holding my breath!!

I agree but I do remember NC Docks going on sale at the same time as TLM2 Apocalypsburg. I don’t recall specifics (I’m sure I could always check my old order forms) but I think it was 20-30% off. Of course there is no guarantee this will ever go on sale but it has happened before. I unfortunately waited too long for NC Docks but I was able to get Apocalypsburg, which is still sitting in the box of course.

As an American, I for one would be pretty ticked off if Lego delayed the global release date of big sets just because the UK somehow managed to screw their handling of the virus up even worse than my own country. Things have been pretty grim here as well, and sometimes the prospect of new Lego is one of the only things keeping me going.
I'm hoping to get this tomorrow. I normally don't get big sets like these right after release, but there's no word on any similarly-themed gift with purchase for next month, and as of this year I'm no longer in a LUG that would periodically give me access to larger discounts. Beyond that, I'm hoping to have something offline to enjoy in the near future so that can give me a bit of respite from all the dour political news that's likely to keep springing up during a rocky transition period between presidents.

Plus, it’s still a pandemic, and the state of global manufacturing makes it difficult to get additional stock of pretty much everything - including LEGO. These sets are a great value as-is, and I’m very much looking forward to this! I’ve been patient for the last few months and I welcome its imminent (and likely brief) availability!
Speaking of which, you’re sitting on one of the most enjoyable building experiences of all time! During a pandemic! What could you have been doing that’s kept you from building it for so long?!? In my opinion, buying a set and not building it is a bigger waste than buying it at full retail price, but of course to each their own.
Great to read that you're going to review this, can't wait to see all details up close! (Still can't get over that there's no official Brickset review of 70620 NINJAGO City.)

In the UK we can’t go to any stores until the Government let us, and it’s likely to be a good few weeks before that happens.
Not showing as available to order for me, signed into my VIP account and still no option to add into my basket. Sign out then back in still not allowing me to add to basket just says Coming Soon.
Bare in mind I am signed into my VIP account.
To be fair, they only say 14/1. Not what time 14/1!
People who have no intention of buying this set going to Lego.com, apparently just to see if it's available... Yeah, I wonder why the site has problems? ??
Not currently showing as available to buy for me now but I did manage to place an order at about 11:30pm UK time however it’s not showing in my order history and I haven’t received a confirmation email. Makes me think maybe it wasn’t supposed to go live until 9am because there’s going to be a VIP GWP as was the case with Mos Eisley Cantina?
You'd think they could write not only the date but the time too, seeing as sets like this usually go out of stock very quickly... But then of course if everyone tried to access their site at the same time it'd crash...
Now thankfully in Sweden the Lego stores are still open and their service is miles ahead of the website - the new sets are usually in stock too. However there are only two stores and they're both in Stockholm, so if you don't live there or nearby, you just have to go online...

They’re delaying film production for safety issues. They’re delaying film exhibition so they don’t lose money.
LEGO sales are actually up this year because everyone’s at home, particularly bigger “project” style D2Cs. Delaying sets would cause massive financial loss, whereas the studios are delaying films due to the loss of revenue that would come from releasing them, as shown by Tenet. They’re polar opposite situations.

Does anyone get the heads and tails of the distribution of Lego stores? Some countries has loads of them (often several in the same city) while others (including Norway) has none at all. Personally I consider the whole "Lego Brand Store" concept an utter failure, I really think they should focus more on getting the advanced sets into regular toy stores. When you say "Lego" most people associate it with KFOL themes like City and Duplo, as that's what they see in stores and they don't know the advanced themes exists at all.

Distribution is odd. I live in NYC and I just checked and there are 10 The Lego Stores within 40 miles of my location. Realistically some would take hours to get to because of traffic and bridges and tunnels but that seems like quite a lot.
Does not seem to be available yet in Canada.

Would love some consistency from Lego on releases. Seems we are waiting until the morning now unless it magically appears at an odd hour of the night.

I'm curious, exactly what do you think LEGO could be doing that they aren't given the situation?
What the definitely shouldn't have to do is alter their release schedule because one tiny island is currently governed by idiots. We, as a country, are 14 days into a situation of our own making and currently reaping the rewards of our incompetence.
Well, I feel very fortunate to have got an order in at Midnight Swiss time! Its still showing as Processing (not in the warehouse), so there is still time for it to go wrong.... I will cross fingers for everyone else - very excited about this set!
I'm still waiting for it to be available here in the west coast.

Still not available in the UK at 8am
Still not available in Canada, more than an hour into the day. Blasphemy! All my points are going on this!
Just got off the phone to customer service and they have no record of my order made at 11:30pm UK time. They told me to reorder when it goes live on the website at 9am. Apparently it’s going live worldwide at the same time so hopefully we all only need to wait another 36 minutes!

D2Cs on sale is super rare, at least here
I was able to order it one minute before midnight... after I ordered, I got the same page as others here!
Another similar situation here - got one at 22:59 UK time, but this morning my order is shown as ‘processing’ and the page has gone back to saying ‘coming soon’. Fingers crossed...

I can see my order listed on the lego.com site, and I also received a confirmation mail some minutes after ordering - this reassures me.

In Canada, there never are discounts. You get the occasional gift with purchase, maybe double VIP points, but that's it. The best I've done two years ago is to get the City and the Docks for 30% off on here on their Black Friday sale, but this year's sale was awful. There's simply no guarantee the sets you want will ever have discounts, especially those big expert sets. Add to this that this year, Lego sales have been through the roof and things go out of stock super quickly never to reappear, and I won't take my chances waiting for a maybe sale for a set I really want. Too bad the Vintage Car is not available anymore, but so be it.
Live to buy in the US too
Available and ordered
Ordered. Looking forward to the build!
Heads up that it's available on the West Coast in the USA (very strange time to be available; was definitely not available right at midnight, but is available before 1 in the morning). Good luck with getting one; I got lucky checking it just before going to bed assuming it would be available at 6 AM PST/9 AM EST. They must really not want this to be available during "prime time" or regular hours when people would be awake.
Works now here in Germany, since 2 minutes. 9:57h.
My order just went through!
ordered, no problems
The set is live now; just purchased in Canada!
Just ordered now in UK, came live about two minutes to 9am GMT
Available again in Switzerland!
Order placed! And half off with all the VIP goodness!
It's live in the UK now!
Ordered :)
Got the Skating Rink promo too, nice touch
@bricksintheattic it’s available now!!!
Ninjago city garden went live in the UK at 9am x
When it wasn’t available at midnight EST I set an alarm for 8:30am. Ordered at 4:30am and canceled the alarm. The one time insomnia came in handy!
This set looks great and I am considering buying it but I am still on my waiting on my harry potter booksets I ordered januari 1. Who are still on backorder and the gwp's have mysteriously dissapeared from the orderlist
Got it for €95.11, after cashing in €200 worth in vip points, takes the sting out of the price! Can’t wait to build it and display next to the city and docks sets.

Not any more. Sets like this often become 'hard to find' soon after release nowadays and almost certainly won't be discounted.
if you're going to buy it, best do so now to avoid disappointment.
After 4 Beatles sets, Police Modular, Mickey & Minnie, Bugatti and Lambo it’s been an expensive couple of months Lego wise, so I had no intention of buying this on Day 1...but this thread has press ganged me into doing just that...doh!
Acquired here. Might make the small set attached to this to be connected to the Spring Lantern Festival and Skate Park.

" @bricksintheattic it’s available now!!!"
Thank you very much @brickdevil !
I did check first thing this morning, and managed to place an order. Quite relieved! Was worried the VIP allocation of sets may have sold out instantly before midnight last night. Supposedly I'll be getting the Ice Skating Rink which I'll sell to slightly lessen the pain my wallet's feeling... (though I'm very tempted to keep it for those *amazing* sweater torsos!)
Normally I never do a day one purchase (and wait for a discount or 2xVIP & a good GWP) but I'm no longer so confident of discounts on desirable AFOL sets, which seem to be on permanent back order or temporarily out of stock these days.
Seems it went to back order in the UK as I was completing checkout. Now have a shipped by 20th January date.
@bricksintheattic my thoughts exactly! It was a definite buy at some point but I didn’t plan on a day one purchase. Then I thought about it and decided I couldn’t risk it. We made that mistake with the Star Wars advent calendar, waiting for a price drop and it suddenly disappeared from sale everywhere.
I’d have rather waited for a 2x VIP points and a better GWP but with covid and Brexit throwing up hurdles I think it’ll be on back order for a while and not around for long after that.
Interestingly I placed my order just after 9am and it was already in the warehouse awaiting despatch within the hour. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take as long as the police station modular to get despatched and delivered - we’re still waiting.
Well I was able to get my order in early this morning. Wasn’t going to stick around all night to see if it would become available or not.
We’ll see how long it takes to go into backordered/out of stock now!
Annnd ordered

Well I got the Police Station yesterday. It escaped from the 'in transit from Mechelen' black hole on the 12th and arrived on the 13th. 2 more orders still in transit, going nowhere, 1 in warehouse and DPD appear to have re-suspended European freight... update due Friday.

I ordered mine dead on 00:00 with nothing else but the GWP and mine is still “in transit”, my second order placed later on the morning of the 1st had been in warehouse-limbo until this morning when it was suddenly despatched. 80107 Spring Lantern Festival is still back ordered though unfortunately.
"DPD appear to have re-suspended European freight... update due Friday."
I can’t believe they started up deliveries for a few days only to suspend them again! It’ll be Ninjago’s 15th birthday by the time 71741 arrives!!
Ordered it around 530am cst, no issues. This is my first modular, I’m excited!

They were aiming on restarting on 13th so I was quite pleased when 1 stuck order started moving on the 12th evening... I was hoping that was the cork out of the bottle and all the stuck orders would flood through. Apparently not!
I wonder how this set wil look next to this year's Chineese newYear set
Just ordered without a problem. I wonder what time it became available.
This would have been a day one purchase, but I'm waiting on my points clearing from Jan 1st, so looks like 22nd or 23rd, providing the lantern festival has shipped by then.
The rest of my Jan 1st order was shipped this morning.
As for distribution, as far as I can work out, its either Europe or UK that delivers to UK. If it takes longer, its Europe, it waits somewhere in Belgium according to DPD tracking. I had Europe for everything but the collosseum, which must have come from somewhere in the UK, as that took no time at all to arrive once shipped.
EDIT: Lego saying NINJAGO Gardens now on backorder, ships 21st Jan.
I would have thought they would be prepared for the VIP launch.

See above for a plethora of comments from people excited to buy it as soon as possible, during a pandemic when stock is limited and manufacturing is a challenge. LEGO was as prepared as possible, but this has happened to every big release of late. I’m sorry you missed out, but that’s why everyone was scrambling at midnight! I recommend ordering it while it’s just backordered and not completely out of stock. It’s going to be a wonderful building experience!
Avoided any chance of chaos online and picked mine up in store instead. Already several bags in to the build and enjoying it so far.

I am aware of all the reccomendations, but not everyone can afford to do so. According to some of the comments, it wasn't available until after 9am GMT anyway.
Its for my birthday anyway, so as long as its comes by the end of Feb.... I'll moan but wait.

You know what killed many, many more Aztecs than the Conquistadors?
A virus.

Also three people known to my household. So far."
@theJANG Sorry to hear this , it's a shame governments around the world cannot get hands around this issue. Keep up the great work on the impartial videos which is something rare from the bigger names/sites in the Lego community.
I loved 70620 but for one reason or another this is not grabbing me the same way. I'm sure I'll change my mind once its sold out everywhere.
Wow, still in stock at 12:25 EST, unlike Spring Lantern Festival. I was able to place my order with no problem.
Actually I cannot stand this rush because some people fear to not be able to buy one.
I live in Europe but not in a big town, I was able even during this bad year to buy every lego I want: 2 modulars with 25% discount in local shops, pirate bay and elf house from lego.com and so on...even the "old" Ninjago city, hidden in a shelf, with only a little overcharge. So I let other people rush :)

What are these mythical shops that sell older sets? We don’t have anything like that in the US. I’ve been wanting Ninjago City for a while and was willing to pay $150 over the original price for a new one, but the current prices on Bricklink are just crazy.
Either way, great find! :)

Usually I visit every toy shop I can find, I've visited so many shops during these years...you know, when you roll hundreds of times a dice, you can find a triple six :D
I was doing a little trip close to my city, you can imagine a family with a 1-year-baby and a dad with a huge bag going through hystorical center :D
I think Lego deserves some credit for this launch. It was briefly available to order too early (midnight in Europe instead of 9/10 in the morning), but once that was corrected this launch was pretty uneventful.
They set the purchase limit to 1 per household, the set is still available in the USA, and on backorder for only 7 days in Europe. And checking the comments above it seems the website performed fine as well.
I know, this was only one set being released so can't really be compared to Black Friday or January 1st. But still: happy to see they managed this as well as they did when demand seems to be off the chart for every single half decent set.
already bought!
soo excited.
Oh dear. I have no interest whatsoever in Ninjago.
My wallet says, 'keep strong', my house says 'where the hell would you put me', but this is so good it's starting to draw me in!

Ha ha - so true! I have never watched the cartoon or the film or engaged with any of the media, but the temple and dragon designs are so good...
