First information about UCS Republic Gunship!

Posted by ,

Following a conversation with several LEGO Star Wars designers and Fan Media outlets today, we can reveal some information about the Ultimate Collector Series Republic Gunship which will be released this year!

Firstly, the model has been designed by Hans Burkhard Schlömer, the creator of 75192 Millennium Falcon and 75275 A-wing Starfighter, among many other sets. The cockpit section comprises two 10x4x3 cockpit elements which are positioned end-to-end and accurately decorated, featuring a suitable dark red stripe over the gunner and printing around the edge.

Based upon this information, we can estimate the total length of the Republic Gunship at approximately 50cm to 55cm. It was suggested that a small coffee table might be needed when displaying the model, presumably because of the substantial wingspan which should roughly equal the length.

Furthermore, the design team confirmed that this vehicle will be inspired by its appearance during Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, rather than The Clone Wars or Revenge of the Sith where the vessel also appears.

Unfortunately, it was also indicated that Jedi Bob will not be included. No other information about the minifigure selection could be revealed at this time.

Are you looking forward to the UCS Republic Gunship? Let us know in the comments.

By in United Kingdom,

I am looking forward to everyone who really liked the Gunship in the SW media finally getting what they deserve! It's all yours guys!

Edit: for the avoidance of doubt, I am not being sarcastic - you guys need this.

I wonder if they'll use gyrospheres for the ball turrets?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I feel a disturbence in the force like thousands of AFOLs cried Bob! in unison...

Oh, man, this thing is going to be spectacular. I can't wait to see the official images.

Gravatar

Definitely looking forward to it!!! Thanks for the updates!

All Hail Jedi Bob, the true Lord of the Sith!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Seems like this might be well above minifig scale then?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I will probably get this if it fits on a shelf but I doubt that's going to be the case

Gravatar
By in United States,

I there isn’t a Phase II Commander Cody there will be riots in the streets!!! Come on Lego, at least give us THAT courtesy!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

We could have had a Nebulon is the only thing I can think. :-)

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looking forward to this one! It would be fun if they went a route similar to the Falcon where they included two sets of minifigures and decorations, perhaps one set from Attack of the Clone and another from The Clone Wars. I can't wait to see photos. :D

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

I can't wait to see how it looks! And it's sad to hear that Jedi Bob won't be included in the set

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Absolutely!
Now it feels like 2021 has started

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I heard rumours that it will only include one minifig: Mace Windu. If it’s the case, it’ll be disappointing. I have 7676 , slightly moded and in top condition, so this might be a pass for me.

Gravatar
By in France,

Jedi Bob as a May the 4th promo? ? ;)

Unlikely but would be great

Gravatar
By in United States,

Jedi Bob was a great warrior, and a good friend. I heard that a young Jedi named Darth Vader betrayed and murdered Bob.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Will we see more of this conversation published soon? Love hearing what insight designers have to answer on these sets...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Shut up and take my money; will be ordered as soon as listed at lego.com. Best with the Tatooine diorama as a GWP I have heard rumors of.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The 75021 gunship is one of my favorite sets ever. So well done and a great value! There is part of me that is excited to see what they can do with a UCS, and another part of me that nervously wonders how they can top such a great design.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

It's going to be awesome for sure, but I really think that the gunship would have been made a better performance as a regular set, not UCS. More playability, more merging capacity with other LEGO SW elements and sets..idk! Let's see what does LEGO have for us.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm pretty sure the normal play scale one might be above minifig scale too

Gravatar
By in United States,

No Jedi Bob?? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

this is going to be my first UCS

Gravatar
By in Germany,

God damn this will be huge and unpayable. I really love LAAT's (one of my favorite vehicles), but that will probably end up being way to much for me.

Well, I wanted a(nother) minifig-scale Gunship. This sounds too big, so... No. I am very curious to see it, though!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hmm. I couldn't even tell you which film(s) this ship was in. I'm a Star Wars Fan, but if I'm honest, that only really extends to the holy trinity. Didn't like the prequels much and can't remember much about Eps 7-9.

So that's about £300 saved then...

Gravatar

With no Jedi Bob, I have no reason to get it, honestly.

Attack of the clones especially towards the end with yoda flying over the desert.

Really? Even if you’re only a fan of the OG trilogy, the Republic gunship is one of the more recognisable and widely used of the ships that the prequels gave us

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Does not mentioning Commander Cody mean he is confirmed for this set? ;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

That sounds like it'll be 25-45% larger than minifig scale. Seems like a strange choice. Why not make it actual minifig scale like the Falcon and Slave 1, include a few really nice minifigs, and charge more like $200?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Always welcome to see something from the Prequel (too much underrated, don't care what others say). And glad it is based on AOTC instead of CW or ROTS. Wonder how many pieces it would be and price. Couldn't believe they missed a great opportunity to bring back Jedi Bob.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Are fans still asking for Phase 2 Cody in this set? I agree that he should have appeared in LEGO form by now, but I don’t know why LEGO would put any phase 2 clone in an Episode II UCS set.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

There will not be a phase 2 Cody minifigures. The article clearly mentions that “the design team confirmed that this vehicle will be inspired by its appearance during Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones”.

They could have made it an episode 3 set. The gunships make appearances on Utapau and Coruscant.

I thought the same thing!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Do as they did for the Falcon and include pieces to make an alternate version - say, the version that carried the Bad Batch, Captain Rex, Commander Cody, Kix, and Jessie on their mission to the Cyber Center which led to their rescuing Echo.

Include the above-mentioned minifigs (a bigfig for Wrecker) with a crew of at least 4 and I dare say it would sell out in a heartbeat.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I wanted to buy 7676 (MiSB) but I'll wait until this one will come out. Maybe then 7676 will get cheaper. Then I buy both. I'm currently putting money aside for 10179 (MiSB).

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Very optimistic for the model but the Jedi Bob exclusion is really sad to see especially considering it was such an obvious pick for the set. Still hoping for the special pilot helmet moulds!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The rumor about the minifigs isn't just Mace Windu, it's also that a solitary clone (sergeant I think?) will also be included. I love me some gunship but if they don't even add a single pilot (preferably with a new (and accurate) helmet mold), that will be disappointing.

I felt that shudder. These are not the sets you are looking for. Move along. :)

By in United States,

While this sounds super cool, and will undoubtedly be very detailed and very big. I really wish LEGO would release a new play-scale version. I have kids who missed the first round of Clone Wars ships but have become big Clone Wars fans because of the new episodes released last summer and the fact that all the original seasons are on Disney +. My kids and their friends are all clamoring for more Clone Wars Lego sets and a Gunship is on the top of their list! This set will be both too expensive and too big for kids to realistically own and play with. And while I get the appeal of a set like this for adults (myself included) I wish we were getting a newer version of the Gunship that would be accessible to kids too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Absolutely looking forward to this, never thought they'd actually do it!

Gravatar
By in France,

It might be the second UCS set that I will have the great joy and pleasure to offer...to myself. I shall start to save money right now for it, hopefully it won't be as expensive as 75192. And meanwhile I will also have to resist to the future releases, hoping that there won't be tooooo many exciting new sets (Ninjago and SW) on my way to this probably gorgeous Lego rendition of one of my favorite SW ship ever.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am shocked by how many people are suddenly uninterested in the set because there won't be Jedi Bob!

Its funny to think that a set with thousands of parts will have lower sales because Lego chose not to include 5 pieces...

Edit: For fun I looked on Bricklink to see how much Jedi Bob costs, but was once again surprised to see that it will set you back at least $40, and $83 for a new one!

Didn't you all vote for a UCS gunship, not a bunch of minifigures? If you're looking for minifigures you all need to wait for a play set, not a UCS set.

Luckily my oldest was old enough to watch Rebels when it first was on, and so we picked up most of those sets when they came out . . . it's crazy how much the Ghost is going for on the secondary market!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

It’s not just Jedi Bob.

Why can’t Lego give us an Episode III Cody?!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Who is this Jedi Bob? It was always Jedi Jimmy before.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've been waiting for new like this since I was ten years old! Ol Jedi bob being absent is a little tragic but the model as a whole will likely more than make up for it!!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I'm interested to see how they go about combating the likely droop/sag in wings that large. One of the designer's other models, Slave 1, has a history of coming apart a little through gravity over time so hopefully this one is reinforced.

I've been thinking about the whole "I don't want this set if it doesn't have Jedi Bob/Commander Cody/a decent selection of clone troopers", so I want to follow up on my original comment.

It's rather interesting if you look at the psychology of it.

Realistically, one or more minifigures should not really change the value of a UCS set. A model of this scale already has thousands of pieces, so appending or taking away a few small parts would be trivial. Plus, UCS sets typically are not even minifigure-scale.

However, what we see instead is that minifigures often determine sales. A single plastic figure isn't very valuable compared to a large vehicle, but the appeal is enough to push people to buy the set. There is a fascination with having something biotic, which is why even single element animals (spiders, bats, dogs, etc.) have relatively large values.

Now, why exactly are people so intrigued by these living things? That is a question which I cannot fully answer.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What if they put Jedi bob in,but then again Lego never tries anything new.

Still holding hour for a ROTJ Millennium Falcon with Nien Nunb, General Lando Calrissian and Princess Leia in Briefing Room outfit.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was very much invested in this set to begin with, but without being mini-figure scale and lacking any interesting figures (Jedi Bob, phase 2 named clones) I have genuinely lost interest in this set. I’ll save for the summer range of Star Wars sets for sure.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not for me. It’s an ok ship, but I’m not interested in anything based on the prequel trilogy, or even worse, the Disney films. The prequel trilogy had its moments, but vehicle design wasn’t a patch on the original trilogy.

I’d love a UCS Razor Crest, but that’s about it.

I’m far more interested in the rumoured UCS ATAT for later in the year. If it really is a UCS ATAT, I’ll be the first in the queue to hand over my cash.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Four things could have happened to Jedi Bob:
1. He was betrayed by his own clones because of Order 66
2. They left him out of the set to include him in a more affordable set in the future
3. Disney doesn't like the idea of Jedi Bob
4. He is using Force Stealth

Gravatar
By in United States,

So with the size of the ship being what it is... does this mean Jack Stone figs can pilot it? Could we see the rise of Jedi Jack?

A premium set like this should have special and exclusive minifigs (updated Jedi Bob, Phase II Cody, clone pilots with new helmets). 71741 has 21 of 22 minifigs exclusive, and the 1989 Batmobile and Batwing have exclusive minifigs (except for the Batman shared between them). Lego knows what people will want, and if they don't deliver, they'll just have to lose some customers.

The other examples you gave are all very well-known characters in a fleshed-out world. I don't disagree that premium sets bring premium figs but at least aim for things that make sense. Cody would be like asking for Bane in a Batman 89 set, and I can't even think of a comparison for Jedi Bob

Jedi Bob is more popular than you give him credit for. There's a reason people will pay $80 for him new. He came in a previous gunship, he is a Lego original character, and most of the people who voted for this set probably did it with him in mind as a possibility. MandR asked people to request him early-on, and even people who don't watch MandR know about Bob. I've thought he was a cool Lego Star Wars joke since he was named in the Visual Dictionary.

They could give us better/more than what they are rumored to, at least. Only one or two figures? I hope they don't just reuse the Mace Windu from 75199 .

I'm assuming that's a Lego Star Wars youtuber? Yes, I'd imagine his audience would be familiar. A regular Star Wars youtuber's or regular Lego youtuber's audience? Much less likely. And I'd imagine the goal of this set would be to have a slightly larger appeal than just Lego Star Wars fans. Sets like the UCS Falcon go gangbusters because they've got very wide appeal. A prequel (even though they've been rising in popularity for a while, still a hill to climb) ship with a rando that the vast majority of Star Wars fans, even big fans, couldn't name? It's not the best direction to go

Windu should be updated at least, and a new Dooku wouldn't be a terrible pick either

Minifig-scale is extremely rare for UCS vehicles. Offhand, I can only think of MF1, MF2, Tyderium, and Slave I that would count.

Well, all ships between 20 and 35 meters (Falcon, Slave I, Imperial Shuttle) have been made at minifig scale. Only small ships up to the size of the B-Wing (16.9 meters) are usually scaled up. At 17.4 meters the gunship is kind of in between, so minifigure scale wasn't out of the question.

The gunship is extremely popular within the Star Wars fandom, so is it really hard to believe that within a poll between 2 other Star Wars ships it could have the potential of winning? Also, SW0057 is the aforementioned "Bob" from set 7163, the original Lego LAAT Gunship.

Hell yea the LAAT is such a cool element of the Star Wars universe. With the Clone Wars and prequels receiving so much spotlight nowadays, I'm sure this thing will get a lot of attention!

@Graupensuppe:
But that’s just it. Starfighters get scaled up for increased detail. Capital ships get scaled down so they can fit in your house. There are only a handful of iconic vehicles that are too large to do in minifig scale without using the UCS theme for the increased budget and piece count. So when you get a set like this that’s in the bubble, the question is if they’ll hold back just to keep in minifig scale, or if they’ll go for the increased detail.

Highly unlikely. UCS usually include a selection of regular "users" of the ship. So pilots and crew members with special touch (arm prints for example). Bet we will see few pilots and gunners with the model.

I hope you're right, because the phase I pilot really needs his own helmet mold.

But included both Nicanas Tassu and Taron Malicos in this set instead...

Hi all, first time commenting. I imagine they are not including Jedi Bob because possibly Disney will only licence canon characters. Could that be it?

Meh, really didnt want an UCS. Would have much rather settled for a playset.

That was my immediate though as well. Disney might wish products to remain broadly within canon and be reluctant for LEGO to produce an 'unnamed' character that was not inspired by anybody in particular.

Welcome to Brickset, by the way!

Going to say something perhaps rather crushing, if it is not minifig scale similar to 75021 (which I don't have, but always looked at {from pictures and a video review} as the pinnacle of a what a good Lego set should look like that is both nice to display & has play-value, even if you never play with it) but better, after all it is a UCS set, then I will probably pass on it.

Just curious, which one is Nicanas Tassu? And was Taron Malicos at the battle of Geonosis?

Not a big fan of the prequels, but I do like the gunship. That being said, not really sure what to expect from this. 75021 is a great set, and it sounds like this is bigger, but not a lot bigger. If the price is really $350, I hope it comes with more than 1 minifig. Guess we'll find out pretty soon.

As far as Lego making another minifig scale version, if they did that now it would just be another down-sized less detailed remake, like most of the other dissappointing Star Wars sets that have been released this year.

I'm hoping that this is an excellent set and that I'll want to get it, because so far this year the other Star Wars sets have left a lot to be desired.

@classic_space17:
I could easily see them producing a model of the gunship that's about the same size as 75021, but uses three times as many pieces. I've been doing it with cars for over a decade. I've recently built a 6-wide 1960's Ford Good Humor ice cream truck that's a little smaller than 60231, but uses over 300pcs, so I know how quickly the piece count can balloon once you start trying to work in a lot of small details.

Look at images of that gunship really closely. Do you see ways in which it can be improved? Maybe some large clunky elements that could be redesigned to look better? I'm looking at the sliding doors on the troop compartment. They're made of large wings, and the windows are just tiles slapped on the outside. You can't actually see through them because they're attached to opaque parts. But it's a miserly solution in terms of pieces used, as the actual door panel uses about 20pcs total. What if they upped that to 50pcs, but now you could actually see through the windows? I mean, right there, you're probably looking at a $5-10 price bump, and all you've touched is the doors. Well, door panels, specifically. Maybe the mechanism that they attaches to could be improved, but maybe that adds another $5 to the price. The wing turrets are supposed to be see-through on both top and bottom, but these aren't. You could redesign those to look more accurate, and maybe add brick-built guns to the mix instead of just using printed canopies. And if you scale it up just a _tiny_ bit, you might be surprised at how much that adds to the piece count without actually changing the level of detail.

Will that stop people from saying it's overpriced? No, but it doesn't cost anything to make those accusations. People said that about Winnie the Pooh, but when I picked up my copy on Thursday, it felt like someone had slipped a brick into the box.

"That sounds like it'll be 25-45% larger than minifig scale. Seems like a strange choice. Why not make it actual minifig scale like the Falcon and Slave 1, include a few really nice minifigs, and charge more like $200?"

Yes, especially considering the rumors are another $800 UCS set later this year.

Nicanas was the one that handed a lightsaber to Anakin as the Jedi's stormed in the arena to help. Taron was not in the battle, but apparently survived Order 66 and eventually turned to the dark side.

(Though one is not in canon, they both fit the bill for looking like Jedi Bob :) In any event, any Jedi not represented yet would be welcome I think."

It is difficult to take criticism seriously when absolutely no images are available, nor almost any information! I acknowledge that many people are disappointed about the exclusion of Jedi Bob, myself included, but suggesting that will spoil the entire set is hyperbolic.

It's difficult to take criticism seriously even when the images are available. Mostly people complain that sets are too expensive if they're priced out of their own price range. 75827 was also $350, and got tons of complaints about being overpriced even though the piece count suggests it should have been $450.

You know, back when 10179 had a $100 discount for preorders, I was the only person in my LUG who actually jumped on that deal. Everyone else said it was still too expensive. And even before the set retired, most of them said they wished they'd taken that offer. Certainly after seeing how high the prices when right before the next version came out, a lot of them had changed their tunes (but some only because they wished they'd been able to flip it).

"Didn't you all vote for a UCS gunship, not a bunch of minifigures? If you're looking for minifigures you all need to wait for a play set, not a UCS set."

Lego knows what people will want, and if they don't deliver, they'll just have to lose some customers."

The other examples you gave are all very well-known characters in a fleshed-out world. Jedi Bob has extremely limited appeal, he's a niche inside of a niche, and Phase II Cody didn't exist until Episode 3 and Lego just confirmed that the set is based on Episode 2. I don't disagree that premium sets bring premium figs but at least aim for things that make sense. Cody would be like asking for Bane in a Batman 89 set, and I can't even think of a comparison for Jedi Bob"

Seriously? Who is buying a $350 set that isn’t already a LEGO fan? This isn’t a set in Walmart where kids/parents would recognize a more iconic character and go for it. The main consumers of this set are decently strong LEGO SW fans, and it begs why LEGO bothered asking which figs to include if they didn’t care. Ultimately, LEGO is doing this to ‘appeal’ to new not LEGO savvy adult fans which are a minority compared to the existing ones who’d kill to see a fig like Bob or Cody.

I know quite a few Star Wars fans who have <5 Lego sets including the UCS Falcon. As I said in another comment, the UCS sets have much wider appeal than just the Lego Star Wars bubble. (Vast numbers of) Fans of Star Wars who have never built Lego before would be interested in something like this. Having a rando, non-canon person would probably throw them off.

Also you mentioned the vote, the ideas website specified “If you wish to potentially have your minifigure selection selected, please make sure you only suggest Star Wars characters.” Jedi Bob simply doesn’t fit that bill.
