Ulysses space probe VIP reward revealed

Posted by ,

10283 Space Shuttle Discovery is launched tomorrow at LEGO.com and if you're a VIP and quick enough, you'll also be able to acquire this Ulysses space probe from the VIP reward centre for 1800 points.

The Ulysses probe was launched from Discovery in October 1990. Its mission was to study the sun, completing its last scan of the star in 2008.

Update: there's some debate as to whether this will actually be available tomorrow or not. Some people received an email newsletter with mention of it, but it was missing from it for many. I guess we will find out in due course.

Update 2: Due to 'unforeseen circumstances', the promotion has been delayed.

By in Ireland,

Any details on the process involved in getting this? Do we order the set 1st then add this in or is it the other way around?

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

No way to get this aside from VIP points? I've got less than 1800 so am probably out of luck.

By in United Kingdom,

I phoned the customer service before I got the email. I have been told "The Ulysses Space Probe reward was supposed to launch on the 1st of April but due to unexpected circumstances we had to delay the launch."

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Poppy2612 looks like it's a reward for VIP points, meaning that it can be redeemed from the VIP rewards center the same way that you would select a discount before checking out.

Edit: To clarify, you would select this first and then complete your order.

So does that mean the VIP reward WON'T be available tomorrow?

Seems like yes...:(
He told me the space coin will be there as scheduled.

Why not just have it as a gift with purchase

This will definitely make my space shuttle purchase much more worth it and enticing! Definitely wish it was a gift-with-purchase instead though.

This would have been very special if all those yellow/gold parts were actually drum lacquered like all the silver parts in the shuttle.

By in Sweden,

I recently registered with the VIP programme and have more than 1800 points, and as I understand it I need to make an order for something else to redeem a reward like this, right? (And of course pay postage if the order doesn't qualify for free postage.)

Two questions that I can't find the answers to on Lego.com:
1) Can VIP rewards be redeemed in Lego stores? (To avoid paying postage and waiting for the package to arrive.)
2) If Yes - do I still have to buy something else?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

New email arrived without reference to the probe. Wonder what the delay is.

VIP rewards are online only. When you spend your VIP points to redeem a reward, you receive a promo code that is valid for 60 days. Then when you place an order at the Lego online shop (can be for anything, even a single minifigure), you apply the promo code in the shopping cart to actually receive the item. Note that only one physical reward can be redeemed per order.

By in Netherlands,

Mark my words: when the probe will be available, the Shuttle cannot be ordered because it is out of stock.

I called my store and they don’t have the probe. And you dan only get the probe if you make an order. And if you just order a keychain along with it you get to pay shipping costs.

So, one way or another Lego appeals to a FOMO.

What could have been the cause of this? It seems that its very late to be doing something like this, as the discovery set is launching tonight, it seems very odd to release the shuttle with out the probe in the vip reward center, very out of sync by legos standard

I personally wouldn't take any notice of customer service. I've never found they have a clue what they're talking about if you're requesting information. (Fine for dishing out compensation VIP points for mess ups though!)

I received an email from LEGO VIP Program mentioning the Probe, and one from LEGOShop.com not mentioning it, which is exactly what I would have expected as it's only relevant to VIP members.

Disappointed this isn't a GWP, would have made the shuttle an instant buy for me. It's also disappointing it'll only be available with VIP points - I sure hope that isn't the future direction Lego is taking.

I do know your what saying, id received both emails saying one with it this morning and then a new email the exact same with it being removed

I contacted lego and they commented with

We aren't able to launch the Ulysses Space Probe as planned at the moment and we don't have any more information as to when it will be launched.

We do hope that it will be available soon. As soon as any more information is available about us launching this set we will make sure that we let all our fans know. ??

I think that Lego now has FOMO as a deliberate and regular marketing strategy. It seems like pretty much every major set release has a corresponding GWP available only for a very short time.

^^Yup.
Kinda lame - especially for a boring space vehicle that I can build from spare parts while blindfolded. The Nebulon-B and Bespin Duel were 'exclusives' that I really wanted, but I still hit the snooze button, slept in, and let someone else do the work. Then I purchased them from a Bricklink store at my leisure - granted, for a higher price - but I regard it as payment for someone else staying up all night furiously refreshing a LEGO web page. That can't be good for mental health.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't currently have 1800 VIP points, but I'm happy for them to hold back the release of the probe reward. I'll be buying the Space Shuttle tonight and hopefully I'll have the 1360 extra points needed in time for the release of the probe reward. I'm just hoping I don't have to buy a second Space Shuttle to make the reward purchase valid, and instead I can just buy something smaller. That said, I don't think I'm going to be too upset if I miss this set - cool to go with the Discovery, but the shuttle and Hubble are already awesome enough without the probe.

By in Netherlands,

The have added a short text on the Lego website for 10283: "Coming Soon 1:00AM CET 01.04.2021". Seems like they try to make clear at what time it is launching exactly. That's a good idea.

However: bear in mind that most of Europe is currently on daylight savings time. So 1.00AM CET means midnight in most of continental Europe and 23.00 in the UK.

EDIT: I got confused (in my defence: DST only started last week here). Thanks audaver for the correction: 1 AM CET is currently 1AM in UK, 2AM in most of mainland Europe.

The UK is now on BST which is the same as CET. If the note is correct and valid for the UK then I think it means it shouldn't be available until 1am for us.

Wouldn't 1am CET be 2am CEST?

As much as it's easy to blame Lego, the fact this follows on from the Porsche 911 owners' pack not being available makes me wonder whether it's not tied to the larger issues around shipping and manufacturing that are affecting all sorts of products worldwide. Perhaps many more of the sets are ready and in boxes, but stuck in transit.

At least making it a VIP reward rather than a gift with purchase makes it possible to buy the Shuttle at launch and claim a Ulysses set later.

Probably due to the massive blockage that has been in the Suez Canal this week!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Technically (space nerd speaking), the model consists of the ESA-NASA Ulysses solar probe (the yellow box with grey dish and black-gear RTG) mounted atop the rocket-stack used for heliocentric orbit injection, namely, the Boeing IUS (Inertial Upper Stage) (the 8-wide cylinder) and the McDonnell Douglas PAM-S (Payload Assist Module-Special) (the 4-wide cylinder). The titular probe has less detail than the 21101 "Hayabusa" (Ideas, 2012) or the 21104 "NASA Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover" (2014) but it's clearly designed to be in-scale and display-compatible with the 10283 "Space Shuttle."

Well all of North America didn't get the Porsche GWP so it's not surprising.

By in Canada,

To me this satellite seems better than the one included is the shuttle as it looks like it is built in the same fashion as the Saturn V (for the large circular bit). It is however a terrible annoyance that this company cannot get their act together properly when it comes to releases. I understand covid and Ever Given but usually, when you do a launch, you don't do JIT(just-in-time), and especially not nowadays given the worldwide situation, you get your stuff months in advance - I guess not for Lego...

I will consume everything "proper" space (i.e. real or classic) that Lego throws at us. So 'Ill get the shuttle, the space coin and that satellite whenever it becomes available - with the unfortunate problem of having to buy another set to complete the order - clever
marketing strategy if not borderline deceiving.

(I might also order some loose parts to change those ugly black hinges at the bottom of the bay doors)

In general, VIP points can be used in LEGO Stores but not redeemed at the register. You need to redeem the points you would like to use in the VIP rewards center so they will then be available to use when you checkout.

For this promotion, on the other hand, everything must be done through the LEGO website as the Ulysses Space probe will not be available in LEGO stores.

@MrClassic:
I just called my local LEGO Store to make sure I have this correct, but you _can_ redeem points in-store, to a limited degree. There was a complete overhaul of the system that changed how points could be redeemed that did result in points access at a store from being cut off, but they updated it so that now you can at least cash them in for a rebate against your purchase. That is the only thing they’re able to redeem them for, though. For downloads and physical rewards, you have to do it online.

Physical rewards like this set will get you a redemption code that is sent to the e-mail address attached to your VIP account, so make sure you check your spam filter if you don’t see that e-mail right away. To redeem the code, you do have to make a LEGO.com purchase, either online or by phone. Online, before you submit your payment, look for a couple boxes for something like “codes and offers”. One box will accept physical reward codes, but is limited to one code per order. Another box will allow you to cash in as many “cash off” codes as you have available. _IF_YOU_FORGET_ to add the redemption code, you can try to call the phone line immediately and have them manually add it to the order (still limited to one physical reward code per order, so, no, this does not allow you to stack multiple physical reward codes on a single order). As long as the order hasn’t gone to the warehouse for picking, they should be able to handle that for you. If you placed the order while the phones are shut down for the night, unless your entire order is backordered, you’re probably out of luck.

Now, if you cash in points for a physical reward, you have about two months to redeem it before it expires (no idea if you get the points back or not). If you redeem it, it will ship with the first part of the order that’s available. If everything is in stock, you get the whole order in one shot. If the entire order is backordered, as soon as they have any portion of your order ready to ship, the physical reward will come at the same time. And if part of your order is in stock but the rest is on backorder, they’ll release the first part to ship with the physical reward. As far as we know, once you cash in points for the code, there should be a reserve placed on the item that won’t be removed unless you let the code expire. Once you redeem the code on a qualifying purchase, the code won’t expire on you no matter how long it takes them to fulfill the first part of the order. That said, I don’t believe in taking chances. If I’m placing an order that’s large enough to qualify for free shipping (which is basically any LEGO.com order I place), and I know the entire order will be backordered, I’ll just find something small that I want anyways and add it to my cart before checkout so it triggers an immediate shipment and my physical reward isn’t stuck waiting for stuff to come back in stock. Call me paranoid, but mistakes do happen. If they end up short a few, it’s the last ones to ship that’ll get cancelled. If it gets lost or damaged, the earlier it goes out the door, the more likely they can do something to fix it. For something like this, it’s not great odds, but I’d rather have slim chances than none, if it comes down to it.

Thanks for this info! Makes sense that you can use VIP points for discounts in Lego stores (even though I can't find any info about it on Lego.com) as you can collect the points there, which is what I've done. I've got a store nearby which is still open, and it's so much easier to go there than ordering online. Would of course be even better if physical rewards like this were also available in the Lego stores.

By in United States,

@MrClassic:
If you log in to the VIP site, there are two rows of rebate rewards. One row is exclusively for purchases made through the website. The other row can be used on orders placed over the phone or purchases made in a physical LEGO Store. Not that stores located at the LEGOLAND parks and Discovery Centers are not linked in to the VIP system, so you can neither earn nor spend points in those stores. If you show them your card, though, they might give you an immediate discount that’s roughly equivalent to spending points in a LEGO Store.

Oh, and one thing I forgot to mention before. If you want to use points to pay for a purchase in a LEGO Store, and you have not already cashed them in for cash-off coupons, you have to ask them to do this _BEFORE_ they start ringing up your order, or they’ll have to cancel it, cash in the points, and rescan the entire order before they can apply the cash-off rewards.

By in Austria,

So you pay 180€ for the shuttle and you have to spend an additional 1800 VIP points to get this?
That's an AWFUL deal. Why the heck would I buy the shuttle on launch then? I won't.
Might as well just spend the 1800 VIP on the set and leave the shuttle for when there's double VIP to make those 1800 points back.

Maybe the Swedish version of Lego.com (that I view in English) is different, but there are lots of rows/catagories, the first being "Get a discount at LEGO.com" with discount vouchers - and it's very clear if you click on those that they're valid online only:
"Please note LEGO VIP Online Discount can only be used at LEGO.com. They cannot be used on LEGO phone orders or at LEGO Brand Retail Stores."
Then there are lots of other rows/categories such as "VIP Exclusive Rewards" and "LEGOLAND Tickets – Amazing Day Out with Friends and Family" but no discounts that you can use in a physical Lego store. I guess I'll call my store and ask them.

The Swedish site: https://www.lego.com/sv-se/vip/rewards-center/rewards

The link doesn’t help. It just shows two rows for LEGOLAND tickets and one for LEGO House. It also complains that I signed in to a region other than where my account is based, and says I need to change regions before I can spend points (even though it looks like I actually can cash points in on park tickets).

What I see on the US site is one row for phone/store purchases, with a little store graphic and the amounts ($5, $20, $50, $100) written on pink bars. Then is a similar row for online purchases, showing a graphic of a computer with the same amounts written on green bars. The third line is the current sweepstakes (wooden elephant toy, at the moment). The fourth line deviates a bit, as it’s actually means of _earning_ points. The next 19 lines are physical and digital rewards. Finally at the bottom are two rows of park tickets and one for the LEGO House.

Well I have to say I’m surprised with everyone here. I think that Lego has done a tremendous job making this an authentic launch. As everyone knows, if you plan to watch a launch at Cape Canaveral you need to have lots of time available as launches are oftentimes delayed.

Although I’m shocked there is no GWP. What’s the point in buying the shuttle tonight? I can just wait until it goes on sale, or there is a cool GWP I want. I’ve been planning on redeeming the Ulysses on May the 4th anyways as I figured I could wait til Black Friday for the shuttle. I hope it is able to launch prior to then.

The Classic space coin and the Ulysses Space Probe are not available in the Netherlands. :(

By in United States,

I am so disappointed. I stayed up to order this. Then I had free items in my cart that disappeared after checking out. Ended up a space shuttle at full retail with no promotional items.

"What I see on the US site is one row for phone/store purchases, with a little store graphic and the amounts ($5, $20, $50, $100) written on pink bars. Then is a similar row for online purchases, showing a graphic of a computer with the same amounts written on green bars."
The row for phone/store purchases is missing on the Swedish site. I called my local Lego store and asked and they said there is something wrong with the site but that they can help me with discount vouchers in store. :)

By in United Kingdom,

I ordered the Shuttle soon after midnight last night and there was no offer to purchase the Ulysses Probe for VIP Points at any stage. The delay is a shame, but I would at least hope that it is made available to those of us who've already bought the set. The irony being now that we may actually be able to obtain the Ulysses using the Points we made buying the set itself.

By in Netherlands,

Ten hours late, the Classic Space coin suddenly appeared on the VIP site (Netherlands). The Ulysses is still nowhere to be seen. But I have enough points for that, when it arrives.

236 pieces...that's more than I expected.

Don't feel bad. I ordered my shuttle at 11:15PM (Central US) and I had 2 freebies on the cart, that by the time I was able to pay with all the glitches the portal had, showed up in the summary of the "just processed order"; but today, the order on the portal shows just the Shuttle.

The glitches on the LEGO portal, even with their attempt to manage access with a ridiculous queue that appears to be just a timer, and not an actual traffic gate prevent you from getting anything, even navigate the site, for at least 30 to 45 minutes if you're lucky.

I like much better the pre-order concept. In this way they know how excited people are and how many to make of an item they have created buzz about.

So does that mean the VIP reward WON'T be available tomorrow?"

Seems like yes...:(
He told me the space coin will be there as scheduled."
