Vidiyo: Prototype and development images

Posted by ,

Along with images of the finalised sets, LEGO has also published a selection of photos showing the development of the sets and minifigures.

They are not accompanied by any information, but they make for interesting viewing nonetheless...

"Johnny Rotten Fish"?

By in Netherlands,

Those small builds are far more interesting then the boom box sets.

By in Norway,

I need to reverse engineer and build that 6-wide robo-hip-hop car to put in a city layout! :-)

love those little "boombox stand" builds!

"Spacekraftworks"

Amazing. All these posters are amazing.

YES!!! I love product development!

It looks like the small boom box builds were replaced by the printed tiles as the way to unlock app functions... Shame as most of those look great!

I can't believe how much cooler Vidiyo feels with actual sets to look at. The first wave of just figures and carry cases really didn't seem Lego-y enough to me.

I might moc some black and gold speakers and a stage to go with a modified 70632 Quake Mech, that would be a strong look along with some robo band mates.

Wow! These are incredible.

I don’t think this bodes well for the theme continuing—you don’t see Lego throwing out sketch models for wildly successful themes, because, you know, they might want to end using their proprietary material later—but regardless, I think the amazing quality and creativity of the potential of this theme on display here is breathtaking! This is everything I hoped and dreamed Vidiyo would be before we knew anything more about it than a name.

Yeesh, if only it wasn’t chained to a terrible app and all the compounding problems that it brings.

Oh man, I would have loved those small boom box builds ^^

Also those stage sets are definitely what was missing from the first wave. Those are LEGO sets that still have value even if you don't care about the app.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

As it seems they just released the sets from the new wave so as I see it several made it to official sets like the robo hip hop car!

What a shame that Vidiyo ended up like it did from all of these amazing models. I'd definitely buy the stereo and the pirate ship if they were sets. Those mini builds need to be released!! Maybe they could put a few into one set rather than blind bag them.

Oh wait, some of these are actual sets!! I thought Vidiyo was finished!

Just seen the images on Lego.com. The stereo is £90. Ouch! I'll get it on discount. Pirate ship isn't that great and they're all overpriced.

I wonder if "Pieces of Hate" and "She-Hells" would have been a good brand fit, considering recent cancellation decisions by the TLG... Faux song title appropriateness set aside though, what an imaginative and fun wave that could have been. Glad we got 20.00 single purpose boxes instead lol.

Edit: Glad we're getting actual sets now, although they should have started the theme w/these.

"Grandmaster Flashdrive". That's hilarious! Love the name. I also love the treasure chests and rowboat as speakers.

They definitely should have released all those neat little speaker builds and the stages and other props. I think that's the one thing the line was missing. I think these app enabled themes really shine when they are interesting and include enough bricks and builds on their own without the app.

I am re-editing my post because I just noticed new sets that are fully fleshed-out builds, but these sets look better than those. I can't stand hip hop, but the Hip Hop set looks great.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

That's some of the craziest shit I have ever seen.

Gravatar
By in United States,

No minidoll prototypes? They didnt even think to make them minidolls? Thats sad. The speaker bits are kinda neat though. I wish i could just get some of the hairpieces and wing pieces...

I’m lamenting the punk pirate set that could have been…

Gravatar
By in United States,

Easily one of their worst ideas. I don't even understand what I'm supposed to be looking at here.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Beautiful mini builds with extremely festive colors! Would have loved to buy those...

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Dear Lego please give us HD versions of these posters. I would love to have Fairyfolk one in my room!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

The mini-builds are amazing, why didn’t they release them instead? :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

These are great just because of how unusual they are. They feel really fresh in the world of LEGO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now THIS is what I’m talking about!
The builds are fun, the mini figures are interesting, and it’s full of personality!

I love the dragon character!

By in Ireland,

that is not how you play a violin.

Given mini figures lack fingers, it’s a miracle they can play an instruments.

In basketball this is what you call a “desperation toss”...

I doubt anyone born after 2000 even knows about Johnny Rotten or Sid Vicious - either way, entirely inappropriate for the target audience, all things considered.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They should have started with these sets & then released the additional characters to add to your band. That would have made more sense.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

This theme looks like a waste of money for both the consumers and the LEGO group.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

They certainly look... colourful.

I agree. It reminds me of the Mixel. I would be so glad to see another series like this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love it. It's colorful, silly, fun, and inviting.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think I can officially say those pirates aren't punk. They are sell outs like Green Day
(Jk I love you green day)

I am really surprised by the titles on the punk poster. While I like the names, I don't think they are great to put on a kids toy. And they missed a huge opportunity by not having the Manta-Raymones

By in Switzerland,

Some of these artworks re available as Posters from the VIP Rewards Center. Has anyone ordered one?

Yeah... everything in the planning phase for this theme looks better than the final result :/

@Sandinista:
Remember, everything you see in this article was created during the development phase, and not necessarily intended for release to the public. For instance, what ended up as K-Pawp clearly was referred to as Kitsune Pop at one point. I'm sure the set/graphic designers were just plugging in their favorite bands while they had the chance, never expecting them to see the light of day. In the final product, all of the written text is non-sensical, having no relation to any language currently known to us, so nobody should be able to read _anything_ on the prints that ended up in the physical sets.

These concert posters are reportedly available in the VIP Rewards Center, but they would only be accessible to someone with a VIP account, which in the case of kids would be their parents. Unless the kids know how to get in to their parents' accounts...

@CCC:
Kids only need to be aware that the genre exists. They don't need to be avid listeners or be able to recite any lyrics.

@PixelTheDragon:
Considering how many people play guitar with a pick in one hand and a beer bottle in the other, I think minifigs can manage just fine...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've said it on the main article and I'll say it here, we need more dragon colors. Red and blue are cool, but I'm hoping for green and purple sometime in the future, and the silver and gold in that concept art are nice.

I may have to reverse engineer some of those side builds sometime. They're pretty sweet. Even if they don't come with $20 of parts I would've been way more willing to fork over the money if those were the beatboxes.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Those speaker side builds are awesome.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These are really fun. I really like the dragon poster in the second image. I think the band puns are fantastic. And those speakers are very clever. I wonder how much say Universal music has in the partnership and If that's part of the high pricing / odd release set up.

Gravatar
By in Croatia,

LEGO should show us official prototype development images more often. Those are so fascinating to look at.

Ah yes. Mixels. Still my favorite line of collectable LEGO sets. And what great value for money those were. Pity they stopped making them. Nothing has come close since. Then again, sets that offer good value for money at RRP nowadays can be counted using less than two hands anyway.

By in Malaysia,

Lovely to see the thought process behind the designs. It's very colourful and fresh. I'm not sure why it's not available here. :(
