Creator Castle set revealed!
Posted by Huw,
JB Spielwaren has published pictures of Creator 3-in 1 set 31120 'Great Knight's Castle', which might be a bad translation from German rather than its proper name.
In addition to the castle, the €100, 1,500-piece set which is released on June 1st, builds a lookout tower and a windmill.

That’s so cool
Love it! I think it’s pretty great, and would totally buy it if I had the money.
While this is nice for the classic Castle fans.... I guess I'm just not overly impressed by this set. Yes its got some nice features like the water wheel, and interesting part usage like the shields on the battlements, it just feels rather plain overall.
I love this set so much! But I still hope that LEGO returns with a full-wave in a year or two because I can't afford some of the most expensive sets right now. I grew up in the mid-2000s and 2010s so it's hard to believe that if Fantasy Era and Kingdoms woked, that a new Castle theme wouldn't.
2013 was a little lackluster in my opinion, so that's why it didn't work that well.
Nice!
Overall, this set looks good. I don't know what I was expecting from this set to begin with but I'm underwhelmed by this set for some reason.

Probably because they haven’t used larger wall pieces and so the overall bulk and footprint that a play set would have at the same price point would be significantly greater. You have also been spoilt by the fantastic Blacksmith set this year!
I love it, and think it will go well on a shelf in the background for something like the Blacksmith.

I agree, I was expecting something with a square form and a couple of monarchs, this is more of an outpost placed on a mountain, that Lighthouse build looks interesting and that thing sure is great on how it is integrated.

The more I look at this set, the more I like it:)
I'm not even a classic Castle fan and I love this. It's nothing to write home about, but it is a very respectable castle. The battlements look great, I like the archers' windows and the integration of the yellow sections looks good too.
All three builds look pretty cool! I especially like how the main build looks when it's folded up.
Looks like I’ll be buying 3 of these!
Hmmm? I think I like it.... The box art doesn't help, very angular. I'm guessing the 2 side walls fold in to create a more square footprint....image on the back does show it closed....I definitely like it.
That mouse with the cheese! :D
I was looking forward to this, hopefully the official announcement from Lego will come soon but I think I'll be getting this when it comes out. My only doubt is which bit to build so it fits in scale with my medieval market and the blacksmith workshop. It feels like the latter will be taller than the main castle gate which seems rather wrong but we'll see.
Also not sure I like the dragon but I'm sure we can work out something to rebuild it into.
That looks fab, and adds in lots of elements that have been popular submissions over on Ideas, like the waterwheel & Tower. Looks like it closes up into a complete castle and opens for play. And of course it's Creator, which encourages modification & additions.
Looking through the box art, looks like lots of nice little details - even a dragon.
shame it doesnt have a BF feel at all....
Love it all apart from the sleeveless body armour!?
It looks good to me, if a little bit toy-like in the main model.
That said, am I the only one who just isn't a fan of brick-built animals/creatures, at all?
WOW!
Castles, botanical sets, wild animals, even the RSOTD postal wagon: what MIRACLE has just occurred?
May the 2nd be with you.
YAY!!!!
definitely one of the best sets of the summer heck i might even get 2 copies
Castle! Castle! CASTLE!
That is all.
Lego Creator 3in1 is the very best theme in Lego!
in this line you have:
- Castle theme
- Space theme
- Pirates theme
- Town/City theme
- Ocean theme
and so many more like brick build animals, dinos, cars and robots.
This is where Lego soul is.

No, you're not. But have you seen that wave of forest animals coming our way? Lions and monkeys and elephants!! Still can't believe my eyes!
EDIT Sorry about the OT, but I'm pretty excited about the new releases, 3-in-1 Castle being at the top of that list. Will try and get 2 copies too, if budget allows.

I think they look ok, but as mostly small birds, could easily have been molded versions.
day 1 purchase!
wowowow that looks good
Lovely Castle imagine the scenes you could make with this with abit of Tweaking,
The Fortress from Age of Ultron, Hobbit, Lord of the rings, Harry Potter, and anyone who's mad on knights and Dragons could make a really cool creation from it.
Totally surprised by how much colour they've included. I love it! It's taken them 44 years to release the spiritual successor to 375. Fabulous.
As a new-ish Lego fan, this will be my first castle set.
The only notable flaw is that next to the blacksmith, this will look like the puniest castle
This is best castle since 90.
Dragon looks bad, but rest of builds look cool.
Cant wait to build it and then reuse its pieces in mocs
I LOVE brickbuild animals in creator. It shows you dont need a lot of pieces to make something cool.

Funny, it’s the reverse for me. It feels a bit too colourful and busy. Would have benefited from being a bit subdued and less detailed. Still a lovely set though that I hope to get.

Not the only one. I’m not a fan of small brick-built animals and none of the creature builds in this set (birds, mouse, dragon) appeal to me. They won’t make it into my display collection. Sorry, Mr Dragon, it’s the sorting box for you! :~P

I was thinking the same. The A build is best and of its possible configurations, the folded one is coolest.
This looks to be a really good set on its own - I expected it to trigger my nostalgia a bit more, but apart from the figures, it just doesn’t look like classic castle to me (which was likely my expectation of it and not their goal for it)
Oh man, what a great selection of parts! I love the classic Black Falcon Castle theme design achieved without old castle wall pieces. This will bring the prices way down for the new Black Falcon torso and legs from the Ideas Blacksmith set and help me round out a proper garrison force.
At first I really didn’t care for it, but it is starting to grow on me. I think it is the front I don’t like, with the green bricks at the base of the tower and the dark grey walls
Damn you Lego..... Must stop spending the kids inheritance, must stop spending the kids inheritance, must stop....... darn it.. this'll be a day one purchase.
Only other comment is as a Creator 3:1 not sure if that means more or less likely to see any other sets along a similar theme other than maybe one a year.
I think it’s great! Put it another way, it’s the successor to 6074-1 and it blows it out of the water, but I love the way it retains the original features of the yellow walled section (Queen’s quarters in my head as a child).
Were people really expecting just a lot of grey walls from a Creator set?
@Shropshire , If you keep all the parts, instructions and box in perfect condition, many, many years from now when your kids inherit, they will thank you for it. They will either have a cool, retro LEGO castle or, if they sell it, its value in £££s - which is sure to be significant and a better return than most other investments.
Now we're talking.
I think I'll buy a whole bunch of these to build a really huge castle. Considering these 100 Euro Creator sets usually can be had for around 70 Euro in no time, this makes for excellent value for money too.
I'd wager to guess that this set will become one of the best sellers this year.

It’s tempting to count this as three, since the B and C models are so good, in the same way as the pirate ship last year.
It's not perfect, but overall I like it - with the exception that the peasant has a PIRATE TORSO. Mega blocks, does TLG not understand the criminal shortage of medieval era-appropriate peasants?
It's nice enough for what it is, but they're going to have a hard time defending it with that number of figures. LEGO should have stuck at least another 2
in there tbh.
I love it. The colours, coat of arms and the flipping sides, remind me of the old LEGO castles (my favourite is still 6080 King's Castle). The new castle has a charm, and a nostalgic design. But it also has improvements like the moat, the mill and the dragon. I always wanted a dragon in my castle as a kid :) It has been a while since I bought any LEGO set, but I'll be keeping an eye for this one in the shop.
My oh my... If was I a young'un again I would be ALL over this!
I’ve been so excited to see this set and it’s everything I hoped it would be! I love everything about it!
And I’ve just noticed that the clips used to close the A model are also present on the sides of the B model’s walls, it looks like if you bought two and built each model, they’d connect...! No doubt the C model is the same. Now I’m really tempted to get multiple of it...
This Set is very intelligently designed... in a way that all the 3 options will combine perfectly to build a single big Castle!
I wanted a horse (and not a brick-built) to be included... :(
I just know I will get this. I wonder if the yellow sections reference the original yellow castle ??
This 3 in 1 Creator set is absolutely wonderful!
Personal must have!
So much nostalgia to the 80s classic castle theme I played with as a kid, also very reminiscent of the fact that even though back in the day there were no 3 in 1 designs with instructions, the box-art often showed alternative builds.
Check out this Lego fan website to see examples of 6073 Knight's castle.
https://legosteveblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/lego-black-falcon-sets-1984-1992.html
This set was once a long time ago my birthday gift. Along with some smaller castle sets, I had so much fun with this castle. I rebuilt it so many times, as well as trying to build all the alternative builds, that I could almost do entirely without the instruction. Though I spent most time playing out castle siege wars with it. Would have been nice if 31120 included more knight minifigs!
Fun fact about this Creator set, I think there are no giant wall elements, so you can more easily MOC and free build with this set than many of the sets that come with a huge amount of highly specialized parts that leave me a bit puzzled and wanting when I try to MOC with them, that is when restricting myself to just the bricks within one set. Example: 70437 I absolutely love this set, and it is a treasure-trove of very desirable Lego elements, for MOC'ing without using bricks not included in this set, oddly enough I feel I am severely limited in what else I can build.
My favorite 2021 set by far, amazing as a parts pack, and even with just multiple sets you get a big layout.
Now the main this missing would be Horses and perhaps more knights but as a structure, the set is really really good.

Creator never does moulded animals. In fact, they use few if any specialist elements beyond minifigs and their accessories, hence the brick-built sails on 31109 last year.
That's simply the spirit of the theme, and it really is vital to the rebuilding and 3-in-1 aspect of the sets.
Oh dear... LEGO is making my wallet very thin.
I like it. But I don't love it. There's always something slightly clunky about creator sets especially the secondary builds due to the reuse of parts, but the A build has no excuse for being messy. And it just feels a bit messy here. I get that it's aimed at kids, but perhaps AFOLs have just been spoilt with the recent release of great looking sets.

The old black falcon castle had also a yellow part, and yellow flags i believe. If i buy this i will make it a bit darker, and change the colours of the flags and all.
My only question regarding this set is:
Should I buy 1 or 2?
I would love to see this boy even taller and more detailed...
Absolutely love it, surpassing every single expectation.
Thank you LEGO!

Glad you said this! I've been feeling the same for a little while now. As an AFOL, Creator 3-in-1, along with the recent Ideas sets, have been giving me the most feelings of nostalgia. I do wish that the sets were a *little* less expensive (I'm still trying to budget Pirates of Barracuda Bay...), but, for the most part, it looks like TLG's marketing has effectively targeted these sets to adults with the nostalgia AND the money to afford them.

Right!?! I like this set a lot, but that torso is ALL I can focus on. It just SCREAMS pirates. Luckily the set includes a suit of armour... (IF you don't mind a knight with bare arms, that is...!)
@ everyone who wants more Falcon knights - check out replacement bricks on lego.com - you might need to order legs and torsos separately as their stock varies day-to-day, but I've now got a modest unit of 10 falcon knight archers coming my way... ;)
Finally, a castle that actually has character. I feel like some people see this castle as being messy or chunky, but that's what most castles were. Very rarely were they big squares built on flat ground with perfectly flat sides-they were usually built on rock formations and were very irregularly shaped.
I saw some mention they wish it was more of a square structure. If you look at the back of the box, it appears it very much can fold into more of a square castle shape that some of us expect. Love it!

LEGO should really do a blister pack with 2-3 Black Falcon knights/soldiers, a horse and a goat. LEGO could charge silly money for it and it would still sell like hot cakes.
~$200 Singapore for this castle that, albeit looks great as a standalone set, looks completely out of place with my Knights' Kingdom collection (why I've not had any intention of buying any newer Castle sets including 21325), or $600 for a sealed 6098 that retailed for $190...
It seems like some here are asking this set to be something other than a Creator set. I also dislike brick-built animals as others have mentioned. But this is a Creator set after all, and fits with those conventions. Because of that, this set not check every box for those who really want a new Castle theme (that doesn't describe me, but I know they are among us).
Keeping that context in mind, this looks great. It's well designed and has a great color palette. I like the accurate window slits for arrows which is a nice touch. The recent Creator sets have been hitting it out of the park.

Additionally, if I’m not mistaken, it looks as though the alternate builds and main build can potentially be linked together where the walls “split” to create an even larger castle!
Note the tiny hinged wall segment in the back of the tower model, and the wall of the castle town/market, all of which appear to be the same height as the back wall of the main model, and have the same style of parapets!
If I’m correct about this, that’s all the more incentive for Castle fans to pick up multiples of this set.
All in all, I’m extremely impressed. The interiors seem wonderfully detailed (arguably more so than most actual Castle-branded sets), the structure/build itself is detailed and complex enough to justify the higher-than-usual 9+ target age, and the alternate builds are very unique and creative in their own right.
Even the dragon is more impressive than I’d have expected for its size (better even than many $10 or $15 Ninjago dragons), and the color certainly speaks to my childhood Dragon Masters nostalgia!
As far as building techniques are concerned, the AFOL-quality arrow slits and the water wheel using the new 3x3x2 quarter-circle bay window frames both really jump out at me, as do the brick-built banners and authentic-looking machicolations on the front towers.
I also love some of the landscaping elements like the mossy rocks on which the left tower of the main model is built, along with the trees, mushrooms, moat, and climbing ivy. Actually, how many LEGO castles have even had an actual moat before? I feel like there haven’t been that many.
I recognize that the bright colors are likely to be divisive among AFOLs, but I hope that even those fans who choose to pass on this specific set can look beyond superficial aspects like that, and recognize just how much innovation this model brings to the castle category! Especially since the previous wave of Castle sets in 2013 was so heavily criticized for being formulaic and repetitive when compared to the Kingdoms sets that preceded it.
This set takes a decidedly less “by-the-book” approach, and makes me excited to think about what other types of medieval subject matter the Creator theme might be able to tackle from a similarly fresh perspective in the future.
For a Creator 3in1 Set, this is pretty good, but I'm absolutely disappointed with the Minifig selection and the accessoires in general.
As an avid castle and history fan, it makes me sad that LEGO shows so little love for this theme.
Very disappointing... colors are too flashy, this is clearly rather for kids than adults...
@Aanchir: Heh, I guess people will only approve of bright colors in LEGO castles when it's the entire castle itself that's made of yellow brick.
POSITIVES:
- It's a LEGO Castle, always good!
- Black Falcons, my favorites!
- It folds open/close, like the classic Castle sets
- It looks fairly realistic
- Pretty neat alternate builds
- Interesting building techniques, colors, and textures
NEGATIVES:
- I don't care much for the Fantasy Era sets, so I'd prefered more interior builds instead of a dragon
- I know it's Creator, so animals are brick build, but missed opportunity to give us LEGO animals
- It could've done with one or two more extra minifigs and maybe a (proper) horse
- The skeleton is cool, but a peasant or enemy soldier as prisoner would've been even cooler
- The monarch (or so I assume) doesn't look particularly royal to me
All in all, it's nice to see another LEGO castle, even if it is in the Creator line rather than its own theme, and it does strike that delicate balance of pleasing both fans of the classic Castle era (like myself) and fans of modern LEGO sets (which I am as well). The lack of minifigs is a little disappointing, even if expected. Only two out of the four are Black Falcon soldiers, with the others being a knight (when wearing the armor, at least) and a skeleton, which you can't do much with, honestly.
A castle this size used to get six to eight minifigs and at minimum one horse. Had they changed out the skeleton for a peasant and added another soldier and female minifig (either a maiden, princess, queen, or a market woman), that would've been really great. I'm not the biggest fan of brick build animals either, so I had rather seen LEGO give us chickens, pigs, mice, cats, dogs, and goats, although they obviously don't fit the Creator style and are more expensive to produce than simple bricks and plates. Hopefully this set does well enough for LEGO to do another medieval market square set or a more elaborate castle.
I love it! Sure its seems smaller than a traditional castle, but I love the options. (Plus I have enough 4 walled castles)
I always hope that if enough people buy these classic sets (like the pirate one too) maybe LEGO will see there is still interest, and release a new wave of Castle or Pirates. It's been so long since we've seen any.
See now, rumors about this set is why I was so adamant about BIONICLE winning the 90th vote at the start of the year. Last year we got a big and great Pirate Creator set, this year we got a big and great Castle Creator set, and we get Space sets every few years anyway.
Then again, the AFOL designer program has got a BIONICLE set in the running, which based on comments I've seen go around will probably be 3rd or 5th to reach its backing, so Space is picking up in my wanting for the 90th again.
As for the model itself, I love that each build is basically another section of the castle wall. If you get all three sets you can build quite the impressive castle!
I really support LEGO castle, and want to show the LEGO Group that with my dollars, but have to pass on this one. This is an important set, but is definitely a child's play set (look at those cheery colors!). If this is akin to the Walmart X-Wing, I want the UCS version. I love the Medieval Blacksmith; I want a castle keep and modular wall sections that look suitable around it.
I love it. Lego is really hitting it out of the park with these 3in1 sets. The pirate ship last year was so much fun, my kid loved making his own 'designs' on the brick built sail e.g and we are both excited about this castle. Might have to try and get 2 so we can have more than 1 model. Then combine it with the older castles sets to make a mahusive walled town.
A welcome and good looking 3in1 set, but let's be honest: It is a castle wall and gate with a waterwheel house and a lookout tower, but NO actual castle... ;)
6086 Black Knights' Castle was one of my holy grails as a KFOL and it was pretty awesome when I finally got it as an AFOL. I want all of you to earnestly compare the new 31120 to Bluebrixx 102818 Bluestone Castle (which is admittedly at a higher price point of €179) and tell me that 31120 is anywhere near as good. Note that 102818 has an add-on for a larger keep.
31120 offers some minifigures, which we all love. But, one of them looks like a pirate guy (or a man on the street you'd see in 2021, even) and one of them is a skeleton. The soldiers are nice but you can Bricklink some Black Falcons. I'd rather have more soldiers or knights than the brick-built dragon and the skeleton just adds no play value: it's not like he's an undead warlock or something, just a skeleton. He doesn't have any weapons or armor, he's just...dead.
Well I agree with those who like this set, I think it’s great, nice to see something s bit different, lots of nice parts, can customize it easily and combine with multiples etc. Opened out it has more of a fortified town gate look than a castle but I like that too.

Oui...
It's... Lego. Ultimately it's a toy produced for kids. =) It's not in the 18+ range, so it has other standards. But I understand what you mean. ..

It feels a bit awkward to hear these sorts of complaints when it’s not any more kid-targeted than traditional Castle or Kingdoms sets.
In fact, some of the aspects of the set that have gotten a lot of criticism in this very thread, like the small number of minifigures and brick-built animals instead of molded ones, are directly due to the way this theme prioritizes the complexity, creativity, and intricacy of the builds themselves over the sort of kid-friendly “play value” you’d see in themes like City, Castle, Pirates, or Friends.
And like them or not, there’s nothing inherently “childish” about bright colors. I mean, just look at sets like 21322, 71741, 75978, 10260, and 10257, all of which are aimed at teen and adult builders. Whereas Kingdoms sets from 10 years ago like 6198, 7187, and 7189 were not only aimed at kids, but aimed at YOUNGER kids than this set!
So it’s fine if you dislike this set or aren’t interested in it because of its bright colors. But if your interest in Castle sets extends beyond the handful of adult- and teen-oriented exclusives that LEGO has released over the years, you shouldn’t delude yourself into thinking that your objections to this set have anything to do with it being a “child’s playset”. Rather, it’s simply not the particular style of “child’s playset” that you happen to prefer.
It is not castle. It looks like castle wall.

It actually seems to be about 32x32 studs when closed, so very similar in size to the “classic” castles. That from the end of the 80’s were literally build on a baseplate.

Did you not see the picture on the back of the box that shows it folded closed? When displayed that way, it’s no less of a castle than the classic ones like 6073 , 6074 , 6080 , and 6085 , all of which had a similar hinged layout.
This article has a lot more pics of the set, including the main model in a closed layout: https://www.stonewars.de/news/lego-creator-31120-grosse-ritterburg/
The set looks really good I would like it if it was a bit bigger and I wish that we got a couple more nights as well but it’ll look good against the medieval blacksmith

As with all Creator sets, when in doubt, buy 2 copies! :)
I find my limited moc skills are best used with multiple copies of Creator sets as I find the uniform colours really help me to expand on the original design. Especially if I'm setting out with a specific objective in mind like "nice castle, but I want it taller and wider".
Love the birds. Takes me back to MMV.

This is a really useful & inspiring comment! Thanks, 'Sofa!
Should be interesting to create your own alternatives, especially if you put two sets together! Glad it's a creator set as these tend to have higher production runs and more widespread availability than Ideas sets allowing the next generation of kids to have some fun.
First thing I thought, was an entrance to a theme park, like Legoland!

Exactly! Harry Potter has a castle, Disney has a castle. And fingers crossed we get a future Castle themed actual CASTLE. Looking forward it!
It's a full on modular system. The main castle even has two spots right beside its hinges where it can split apart to form three separate sections. The walls of the B model have the same height as the main model, so all three builds can easily be used to extent the castle. SIGH time to buy this $100 set THRICE

I’ve been hyped for this for a long time. And it sure doesn’t disappoint, except there could be more minifigures if you ask me.
I certainly have a plan to mod this with some Nexo Knight figures and shield tiles to change 1 or more sets into their own faction castle(s).
Nexo Knight figures might be a bit futuristic, but with armor on you just mostly see their emblem (falcon , fox, lion, dragon etc), could even have seperate factions via that, with Creator being more colorful, having some more colorful knights isn't bad, at least seems like a good use for my multiple & some duplicate Nexo Characters + kings/queens/jestros/monsters.
Only THREE figures to occupy a whole castle? At least 5 would have been nice....
Looks like a pretty neat parts pack, and I love, that Lego is offering more of those Black Falcon knights. These ones don't feature those cool pauldrons, that the ones in the Blacksmith set had, but I can just headcanon them as bigger players than the ones in this set.
I'm tempted to use my monthly Lego budget on this set for three consecutive months so that I can amass myself three copies and build a bigger castle or tower with a closed out back. By then I'd also have eight Black Falcon -figures to populate it. Count me hyped!
Next time TLG please put some more minifigs in a set that costs 100€... And while I understand that this set's target is kids, I don't know many parents that would spend that much as a kid's gift during summer.
Super interested on this one, though here in Brazil it might cost up to $160.00, which is super expensive territory. Also, I got zero problems with brick built animals. In fact, I'm glad the Creator line aims at using as few specialized elements as possible.
Black Falcon minifig pack when?
Nice! Not that I'm not super happy for the Castle fans, but... Space next??
May seem a bit lackluster, but we know how parts usage and techniques operate on Creator theme, (no specialized, mostly generic pieces). Wish that the pirate ship underlined with the Pirates of Barracuda Bay example will be also applied in this case. Hoping for the return, even if sporadic, of classic themes. Considering a) nostalgic feelings from older fans, b) newer ones, as i, that have no building and joy experience on those. When i begun there were castle sets marketed but my wallet had to make choices, and i was oriented up to one theme that i´m no longer so interested nowadays.

Space just had a 3-in-1 Rover, Mech and a summer Shuttle (which has Saturn V and Lunar Lander alternates) though.
I know this is very behind the times, but I think Lego should make a Merlin-type theme, based on the 2008-2013 BBC show!
There is nothing ahistorically "childish" about bright colors! People in the European Middle Ages (and ancient Greece and Rome also) often used vibrant primary colors (just think of heraldry!) that may seem garish/childish to our modern aesthetics for painting and decoration - it's not like they had access to the all of the diverse hues and shades we have today! One may think that old buildings have more muted colors looking at them today but that is simply an effect of age/weathering/exposure to elements - a new or well-maintained building like this Castle would probably be decorated with cheerful colors if the owners could afford to - it is a place to live in/work after all!

The thing with Space is that recent sets are generally based off of historical NASA spacecraft (except the mech), with the more sci-fi themes and designs that Lego Space used to have now mostly provided by Star Wars (and Marvel to some extent)
I love the colors, textures, variety, modularity, and Creator's signature build style.
The dragon doesn't satisfy me, but otherwise this is inspiring.
I want to built it, built upon it, build variations of it.
I'm usually more of a space guy, but this has opened my eyes to the potential of castle.
I can look at every aspect and see potential additions, modification, or alternatives, etc.
More classic castle sets relied too much on big grey wall pieces for that.
@LordDunsany:
On the contrary, dyes were often extremely expensive to produce. If you were rich enough to afford dyed cloth, you wanted it to grab peoples' attention. Browns and tans and off-whites were the colors of peasants.
Lovely, I am going to get this, but I have one burning question...
Why isn't there a brick-built horse? I was totally expecting at least one of the models to do that. It's been done in the past before....
Colours are very well done, I was expecting something a little more chaotic like the Pirate ship and Space set from before, which are nice models, but colour balancing wasn't done so well in those two, IMO. Really nice to get more chances for the new Falcon knights, too.

For clothes yes but I was more referring to the colors on the castle's structures. I don't think peasants were the people the castle was designed to house (in times of peace at least).
Looking at the set, the bright colors most likely to be of issue for some are the yellow, the brown of the frames, and the red/white of the banners. I definitely do not think the banners would ever have been made with muted reds and off-whites - they are made to be eye-catching and would get replaced as they faded. While I can understand wanting the frames to be a darker brown, I do not think replacing the yellow (paint) with brown (unpainted wood), a tan (unpainted daub), or gold (like some of the other detailing on the castle) would be especially realistic on such structures - they do not appear to be temporary hoardings and would likely have been painted on a well-maintained castle. White or another primary color could also have worked for these structures. The degree of brightness of the paint ultimately comes down to how aged you want the structures to look - LEGO generally wants to give us medieval sets in their newly-painted prime (with the added bonus that the set images are more eye-catching) while many AFOLs seem to prefer the more muted, worn/aged aesthetic as that is often what most of us are accustomed to seeing on older buildings in the present day.
One of my favorite sets as a kid was 6080 and I was really hoping for something that could go along with it and this set appears to be the proper size. I was a bit disappointed by the main picture of this set, when opened up it just didn’t look good, however seeing it closed it looks fantastic.
Of course I would have preferred the old school wall panels, but I do understand that isn’t a Creator thing (although trust me, I was constantly rearranging 6080, those panels made it very easy to MOC).
This is much better than the Blacksmith set in my opinion. For one, it is a castle, not just a house. But more importantly, the scale is the same as my sets from the 80’s. Sure the Blacksmith set looks great, but it would look absurd alongside my castles. Even Helms Deep would look foolish next to it.
My issue of course is the price. Yes, the price per piece is fantastic assuming it is $100, but did it really need so many bricks? Maybe it does to build a sturdy set, certainly sturdiness of the structure wasn’t as important back in the 80’s.
So will I buy this? Probably, but I think I’ll wait for a sale. These Creator sets tend to get discounted, especially for Black Friday. So unless there is an awesome GWP, I think I’ll wait a bit. After all, I’ve waited since the 80’s, what’s a few more months.
Looks more like a theme park castle than a realistic one. Easy pass.
BLACK WHAT?
The shields could just as well have been Lions or Kings. Great with more castle. Pretty nice... BUT there's quite little Black Falcon touch about it? The black/blue slightly shadowy theme is absent.
Amazing set tottally gonna get it! Love Lego separate builds, 3 in 1 series is so cool and the builds are just increadible!!
I love Creator sets and thought the Shark, Lion, River and Pirate Ship were excellent, to name just a few. This set, however, doesn’t do it for me at all. That being said, I’m actually a little happy with that realization as I need to take a breath between all the goodness LEGO has provided us this past year and get ready for what is sure to be a strong second half of the year.
Glad to see the classic themes have finally found a home - it's much better than years of absolute nothing.
Hopefully when they get around to doing something big and space-y, it'll have a splash of color. The rover was kinda drab, and the spaceman too. Ideally something that doesn't look too out of place among legacy space sets.

It is meant to be for kids.
As soon as I saw the drawbridge and shields I was transported back to an 10 year old boy.

Same can be said for mostly Harry Potter and Castle, the last traditional Castle wave was 8 years ago.
Sure, there have been Nexo Knights Castles, Hidden Side (only available for like less then 6 months), and the great Dungeon/Dragons Ninjago Season 13, but LEGO Movie 2 was also very Space Focused (and unlike Movie 1 had no Castle at all).
The upcoming Ninjago underwater wave seems to have good spaceship parts though, especially the Sea Bounty :D
Would I like a big 3-in-1 Spaceship? , of course, preferably with some nice angled pieces and transparent colors.
I do fully understand the Star Wars point though, I only came back to LEGO after 2016 so I didn't get the 2013 Castle, or 2015 Pirates sets, so the offerings via IDEAS and 3-in-1 in 2020/2021 have been great.
@LordDunsany:
I’ve run across pictures of castles that, due to the color of stone that was quarried in the area, have been black, yellow, rose, or white. I even ran across one that, having been stuccoed, was then painted in tons of bright colors. It was the real-life equivalent of “rainbow barf”.
This will be an instant buy! It's so pretty and detailed!
The roughest edge of the main build is some of the steps to the wall are 4 plates high. Usually one brick is the standard maximum height for a minifig step, otherwise they'll have to climb or jump.
One negative omission: I see a bow and a target, but no quiver!
However, a positive of the main build is the lack of a catapult on any tower. A refreshing change of pace.
I am not sure who is the target audience for this set .. the classic castle or any castle fans definitely not .. 2 knights and a bulk of basic bricks does not appeal to me at all. So I wonder is this for kids only? Do we get a serious castle within IDEAS? I guess that is where a castle fan is hoping to get his next castle set is looking at ... like me still hoping for the Afols castle to make it through :) but this I guess I will skip unless it will be on 30% off ... and I get it for the bricks or.
@rahlmaclaren:
Honestly, steps that are a full brick tall are great for when minifigs need to _REALLY_ stretch their hamstrings. To see what a I mean, take a minifig, pivot one leg until it’s fully horizontal, then rest that leg on top of a brick. Now look where the other foot ends up. I think it was Huw who complained about tiny steps on the big mountain set from Monkie Kid, but those tiny steps are more realistic for such tiny legs (and that’s just the adults, so imagine how tough it is to do stairs with midi-legs or short legs).
As for the quiver, they’re still training their first archer. He’s got to make do with a single arrow until he proves competent. Only then will they buy him a full quiver.
that brick dragon sucks.
I'm buying three of these and making up for the lack of Castle sets for the last 8 years. I will possibly just get a fourth and do some custom castle walls to really flesh out the kingdom. I love the design details on those Turrets and that tall tower will look splendid behind the walls of this castle.
I like this set...and you have to understand; this come from a guy whos 'loyalties' are: Space (preferably 'Classic'), City, and Superheroes (and DC at that)...but I've never hated Castle.
Speaking thereof: I don't see this as a 'Castle', too small...a 'Keep'...no, still too small...I would use the 'Primary Build' as a 'Gatehouse', something at the narrow end of a valley to guard entry into the kingdom.
Say, think other 'factions' will show up? I mean; various ones have in the CMFs, but 'set wise' only the Falcon-faction has really been used...need Lions, Forestmen, and so on...

"I was looking forward to this, hopefully the official announcement from Lego will come soon but I think I'll be getting this when it comes out. My only doubt is which bit to build so it fits in scale with my medieval market and the blacksmith workshop. It feels like the latter will be taller than the main castle gate which seems rather wrong but we'll see.
Also not sure I like the dragon but I'm sure we can work out something to rebuild it into."
Some trees?
One of the best sets this year so far, this is way better than most of the disappoint sets released by Lego such as the bird of paradise and etc. Not only castle is popular and also good price compare to other less popular themes.
HORSE! Every castle needs a horse. You include minifigures, so where are the horses? I know this is a Creator set and they tend to brick build everything but man, give us some horses already!
Dear Designer, awesome set prehaps "self intergration" by that I mean buy one stand alone buy second can add on seemlessly to first, repeat with third model & 4th could round it out
so for $400 they could have an impressive castle build that is impressive at multiple price points
Also 5th build (unused pieces of 1 thru 4 can also be used to build something) looks at Death Star II and the Super Star Destroyer...

"While this is nice for the classic Castle fans.... I guess I'm just not overly impressed by this set. Yes its got some nice features like the water wheel, and interesting part usage like the shields on the battlements, it just feels rather plain overall. "
I disagree; I think for a Creator set it's very impressive. Reminds me of the 10193 Medieval Market Village. It's got great detail parts use and a nice color scheme, and with the Black Falcon knights making an appearance, what more could you want really
As a Castle fan, this does almost nothing for me. It's not architecturally similar enough to the classic Castles of the mid to late '80s in design. The only upside is the minifigs and shields for those who need some more Black Falcons. Ah well.
The set looks ok, I just wish they had kept it at the same level of detail and design as the blacksmith shop. This looks a little too 1990's
