Monkie Kid sets now listed at LEGO.com

The three Monkie Kid sets due for release on July 1st have now been listed at LEGO.com.

The one we didn't have a decent picture of yesterday, 80028 Bone Demon, looks particularly interesting, but perhaps not so when judging it just by its main product image, right, which shows a disparate selection of subassemblies. However, it appears that the subsections combine to create a giant 40cm-high model of the demon.

It's the only one of the three new sets that comes with a minifigure of the theme's titular character, and it contains the most glow-in-the-dark elements of any LEGO set to date.

Once again, thanks to Robert at Promobricks for the news.

I love that bone demon! I could use the parts to make a Lego version of my glow in the dark White Vision Funko Pop!

By in Puerto Rico,

I love that massive Demon, the White Bone Demon minifigure is also amazing.

By in Japan,

Gotta get this, it’s pretty awesome.

By in United States,

That is one vicious-looking demon.

Have to get that Piggy tank!

By in United Kingdom,

I see in 80028 that Monkey Kid gets his own Marvel superhero mech.
Love the whole Bone Demon thing - would be a great addition to my growing Halloween stuff.

By in United States,

This summer's MK wave is much better than last year's. Bone Demon is a day-1 purchase for me, and I can see myself picking up the other two at some point as well. I love this theme!

By in Germany,

Woah the bone mech is a megazord?! Awesome.. also, I like Sandy's mech a lot, I am a sucker for teal and orange - looks great. Pigsys tand is just hilarious once again, funny idea. Best of all: the sets are well priced, I think.

By in United States,

Sandy's mech retails for $54.99, I haven't seen that specific price tag on a LEGO set in ages.

By in Latvia,

Woooah Sandy's mech have a new technique where you don't even have to attach those claw/fang pieces to the main build of the weapon itself!
But to be honest, I like all three sets... It's sad that this theme is not available in my country...

That's a revolutionary technique - I can't wait to see what other uses people will find for it!

By in United States,

I need that panda suit minifig. Hopefully the parts will be available from B&P because the rest of the set holds no appeal. There is always little bits of these sets that I want but the big clunky mech stuff isn't my thing. So I've avoided buying any so far.

Oh LOL I had no idea what this was supposed to mean until I looked at the picture again... render issues are always so funny hahaha.

Okay, I'm slowly getting lost in these novelties ... Has anyone made a list of new LEGO sets since May this year? Not counting Duplo, Magazine Gifts and the like. I mean cool Bricklist.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Those skeletons in the bone demon really remind me of castle fantasy era. My goodness I hope we get a theme like that again.

However, the product data feeds we import have not yet been updated to include the June releases. Hopefully they will be soon.

I find the Bone Demon set kind of funny. Monkie Kid is inspired by China, and skull imagery is taboo there, isn't it? Or am I mixing things up?

I heard that too somewhere, but my guess is that one could argue these are less themed around skeletons and more around just the bones themselves. Like the goons look more like ghosts and poltergeists than, say, Ninjago’s skeletons,

By in Canada,

The Bone Demon has that strong anime villain vibes, I love it.

LEGO's going all in on glow in the dark this year, hopefully don't cost too much on Bricks and Pieces.

That's a bit of a misunderstanding. There is no strict ban of any sort on skulls or skeletons. But many non-Chinese video games in particular have self-censored skeletons and similar "dark" or "superstitious" imagery to ease the somewhat arduous approval process for foreign games (which seem to sometimes be judged more strictly for their potential cultural impact than domestic video games). But it's hardly a taboo or blanket ban, nor does it apply to all toys or forms of media. In this case, the Bone Demon in this set is based on Baigujing, or the "White Bone Spirit" from Journey to the West—a quintessentially Chinese villain that would scarcely raise eyebrows for native Chinese people or their government.

The few I've seen listed so far cost 10-20 times more that the non-glow versions. 1x1 round tile is .42 vs .04 for a regular one. Mini head glow is 1.42 vs. .07 for a regular one.

By in Singapore,

Didn’t baigujing in the original Journey to the West possess the looks of a literal supermodel? Anyway, I have no qualms with LEGO’s redesign. Gives off some serious Rem vibes from Death Note (and some Demon Slayer too I suppose).

I saw that, too - it'd be fun to have this one on my shelf with Peter, Miles, and Cap.

By in Australia,

That bone demon set is incredible.

I like the idea and design of a lot of these Monkey King sets. But the price is so cost prohibitive for the MK range that I haven't even considered buying any of them. I have the polybag, but that's because it's about the only small-scale MK set that they released.

By in United States,

Maybe this is part of Journey to the West or I don't understand their views completely but does anyone else find it a bit surprising that a LEGO set that is largely aimed at China has not just a skeleton but the entire theme of bones? I heard that skeletons and the undead are a taboo subject over there and they've had to change entire models in games just to avoid getting banned. Is there something I'm missing here, or are my hours of watching that one guy who talks about censorship in video games just not useful here?
In any case, I think the sets look interesting, the bone demon stuff reminds me of the first wave of Ninjago with the Skulkin and stuff.

Did you read the other comments before posting?

By in United Kingdom,

I went from this looks like the worst set ever to that’s absolutely amazing in short order. The sets are still too expensive but what can you do.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Waaay out of my budget range. But at the very least the bone demon mech is one of the most innovative designs we've seen in quite a while. Compared to the mechs of last year its split-up function makes the value for the price a lot better!

It was really Nexo Knights.

While this monkey mech and the Marvel mechs use the same cockpit hatch as the Nexo Knights battle suits, the construction of this one has more in common with the Marvel ones (sharing the "belt" above the leg attachment and featuring a custom cockpit instead of the cockpit piece that the Nexo Knights battle suits used). It's so similar that I wouldn't be surprised if the designer of this small mech (if not the entire set) had previously worked on some of the Marvel ones.

This theme looks way too much like Ninjago. If you'd throw these together you couldn't even tell the difference.

I think part of the reason you can't tell the difference is that you don't care what the difference is. Fans of themes like Ninjago and Monkie Kid like them in large part for their characters and those characters' distinct design languages (which can vary dramatically from character to character and from year to year), much like how fans of different Space themes or Castle themes appreciate different subthemes and factions.

I guess you're right about that. Don't get me wrong. I like how these Ninjago and MK sets all look but I just think the 2 themes are too similar in style and colorschemes.

I see where you're coming from to a certain extent—but Ninjago has had a pretty broad range of color schemes since the start, and as the theme has gone on that's only gotten broader. So, for instance, the Bone Demon mech here is somewhat similar to the color scheme for the vehicles of Ninjago's Skulkin villains—but the last wave dedicated to those was 10 whole years ago.

And the main "hero" color schemes for the Monkie Kid theme don't really overlap much with Ninjago—MK's red and yellow color scheme is set apart from Kai's typical color schemes by the inclusion of prominent teal accents, Mei's white and bright green color scheme doesn't really match Lloyd or Zane's, and Sandy's azure, white, and orange color scheme or Pigsy's red, white and pink color scheme don't really resemble any Ninjago character or faction. So as you can see there is SOME overlap, but when you're working with a limited color palette and characters like MK have their color schemes shaped by classic characters, there's ultimately only so much you can avoid any color similarities.

And that's where aspects like the actual builds and the parts chosen for them come in. I've been a big fan of the Monkie Kid theme's design language and how that has been fine-tuned for each character. So MK, for instance, typically gets vehicles with big, boxy yellow parts, like the cockpit of this small mech or the windscreens and classic "tipper bucket" ends used for vehicles like his Cloud Jet and Cloud Roadster last year. Many of his vehicles (especially his mechs) also evoke the Monkey King legend, evidenced by the mech here having a prehensile tail, wielding a red and gold staff, and riding on a cloud. Mei's vehicles are typically wedge-shaped, futuristic, and often have dragon and horse motifs (echoing her role as the modern incarnation of the White Dragon Horse from Journey to the West). Sandy's vehicles are typically heavy and industrial, suiting his role as the captain and mechanic of a ship and as the "strong guy" of MK's team. And Pigsy's builds are immediately recognizable—in addition to red "rake" motifs alluding to his predecessor in Journey to the West, his vehicles typically reference his role in Monkie Kid as a chef and restaurant owner (with kitchen and culinary theming) as well as his pig-like visage and restaurant logo.
