Sailboat Adventure revealed

Posted by ,

The August store calendar for the USA has revealed that 40487 Sailboat Adventure will be a gift with purchase from 1st to the 29th August when you spend in excess of $200.

The model is based on the winner of last year's LEGO Ideas Build that holiday contest by yc_solo entitled Sailing Ship Adventure. As you will see from the photos after the break the finished model is very similar to his submission.

It's a hefty threshold, but there will be plenty of new releases available at the start of the month, so spending that much shouldn't be a problem!

I kinda with this was just a nice set we could all buy for about $20-$25

IIIIII'M SAAAAAILIIING AWAAAAAAY!
But for real, this set is adorable! Love the photography used to show it off.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Tricky to spend more than £200 in the US store...or even £1.
Spending $200 is a lot easier for those of us in the US. ;)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A-ha… now a great reason for me to buy Ninjago city gardens.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

At first glance I thought it was gonna be a new theme based on modern sailing/exploration. Too bad! But nice little set for sure.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Throw in a 2x VIP points day and I'm there!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes! Perfect timing for all of the great 8/1 releases.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Looks pretty good. I like when Minifig scale sets are GWP

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Love the copious use of 1x4x3 white bricks for the sails, considering I had just tweeted about AFOLs' disdain for POOP earlier today: https://twitter.com/NOVALISTIC/status/1419599342474727430 I've got a couple dozen of these bricks now thanks to LEGO DOTS. So much more efficient than using dozens of smaller white bricks, especially when the larger/taller/longer bricks end up being cheaper by volume than their smaller counterparts. Why exactly is POOP an irredeemably bad thing again?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’ve spent so much on Lego this month I could have done with a quieter month in august. Doesn’t look like I will now! Love that!

Gravatar
By in United States,

yay! looks great!
boo! that threshold!
how am i gonna sneak a $200 order past my wife . . . .

Gravatar
By in Poland,

It looks easy enough to build from own parts . Shame it has brick sails...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think $200 is a ridiculous price for this set but it comes with a free Modular and a blind bag so it's probably worth it. Am I GWPing right?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Does anyone know at what time LEGO sets available on 8/1 go on sale? Historically has it been at midnight in a particular time zone?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Only the main sail should have a boom, not the jib.

Typically the sets go up a few minutes before midnight EST; however the GWP goes up exactly at midnight or a few minutes after so you could potentially get an order in for new sets and not get the GWP. (This has happened to me) That is assuming the site is working at all when things go up for order.

Gravatar

What does that winking captain know that I don’t? ;)

Why is it some of LEGO's best sets lately have been GWPs?

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Another lovely Ideas set! Lego really should release more detailed minifig sets in this size and preferably make them purchasable on their own.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Is that the Shuttle Tyderium 'b' model?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like it a lot! Very desirable, I think!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

How many pieces does this have?
The 200 USD threshold seems absurd to me.

Me too! That was my plan exactly when I first heard of this GWP and the $200 threshold.

I do like it, but I’m pretty caught up - not sure I want anything enough to reach 200

Last year LEGO had some serious release problems. The set I wanted (along with most others) wasn’t available until halfway through the month (and I don’t think it ever was on 8/1). Does anyone else remember this?

Gravatar

By in United States,

Kicking myself in the bum for just spending 87.00 on LEGO.com, which would've gotten me nearly half way there had I waited another week. How much does a pint of blood go for these days?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Assuming the UK threshold is £200 then.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Outside of one City set, this is the first time I have seen the modern dolphin piece in anything but a Friends, Elves or Disney Princess set. Nice.

Might have to do with the fact that many of the recent ones are a contest of fan-designed models pruned by community voting. Usually, lots of really, really good submissions and eventually, the favourite wins!

Of course the seagull disappeared. I'm starting to think that Lego is against animals - they are always very parsimonious with them.
(but 2 dolphins is still quite awesome - if we can manage to actually get that set - I missed out on the vintage car)

Gravatar
By in Colombia,

The minifigure selection reminds me of a Friends episode with Rachel and Joey.

Great little set but the threshold is too high for me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why aren't smaller sets like this available for purchase in the "18+" collection instead of being a gwp? Why are all the sets targeted towards adults huge and $150+ ? I like this set but there isn't anything available right now that would get me to spend that much just so I can get it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Good thing the new Star Wars sets are coming out then though I would have loved to get this over the Christmas Story set again (i'm guessing Lego was just clearing out inventory). My wife is going to kill me...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This needs to be sold separately at some point. I know it probably won’t happen but a man can dream.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't imagine it'll be hard to spend $200 at all and that is ADORABLE. While many would just like to buy it outright I am incredibly grateful that it's available at all.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I'm not sure what the amount that we will need to spend for the Aussie store (if they make it available at all), but it will be very tempting, no matter the price. This is a beautiful little set. Plus my wife will flip out over the dolphins :)

Gravatar

By in United States,

@DavidGraham:
Jibs do have booms, called jib-booms...but that’s not what they look like. A jib-boom is an extension attached to the bowsprit to move the lower end of the forestay further away from the mainmast, allowing use of a larger jib. A flying jib-boom can extend this even more.

There’s also whisker poles, which can serve a similar purpose to a boom when running downwind, but they’re placed temporarily between the mainmast and the clew, or lower aft corner of the jib.

But yeah, they way they have this rigged, that jib would be locked in place at all three corners, which would basically force the bow to turn downwind. I want a copy because I used to work for a guy who built wooden boats back in high school, but I’d probably want to build a heavily modified version for use on public displays.

The boom on the mainsail is also unusually high, and they’d need a ladder to reef the mainsail. A simple fix would be to make the mainsail bigger and lower the boom enough to put the “boom” in the boom, and then replace the foreboom(?) with white parts so it looks like part of the jib.

What will these reach on eBay?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Another awesome minifig scale GWP that Id love for my city, but I will miss out on because 1. Australian stores never get any stock
2. I cant get to a Lego store thanks to closed borders. If only Anastasia Palazcky (no idea how to spell her name) was an AFOL, then she would understand!

I think it is entirely brick built and will look the same on both sides. The pieces where I think you are seeing panels I believe are 1x4x3 (49311) and 1x2x3 (22886).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like this. So do we have confirmation it will be released as GWP worldwide and not just USA? And how does the early VIP access work - do you just have to have a VIP account or do you have to redeem a VIP reward?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Frustrating. I’d happily buy that for £25–30 as a standalone. But I don’t have £200 to spend on Lego right now. (I suspect some of these will end up on eBay but go for ludicrous sums.)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Very nice. It's giving me a Zelda Wind Waker vibe!

Gravatar

For 50$ less I would have ordered something but this is really too much. This would have made a beautiful little set to buy directly...

It's actually a different mould than the Friends etc dolphin. This will be its fourth appearance after 60153, 71020-6 and 71029.

Absurd price threshold but I guess this will be sold for a hefty price at BL (35-50€) thus reducing one's expenses of 200€ to acquire it... Scalpers, it's your time. Again.

Beautiful little set!
As many have said, pity it’s not available as a stand-alone purchase!

Also, is this the closest TLG has ever kept to an IDEAS submission?? Normally the final product sails very far from the original creator’s!
Other than the missing tree & small island, which would have been nice, it’s almost identical!

Some of the white pieces on current LEGO sets look yellowed even when you just take them out of the box. Must be a different formulation perhaps. Compare these LEGO "white" bricks to white bricks from Cobi, which are so bright white that a direct comparison looks like one of those before/after shots in whitening toothpaste commercials.

@kolaxanthe:
The way it worked for the vintage car was you could only qualify for it with a VIP account on the transaction, but otherwise it works like a normal GWP. Since we’ve seen a GWP threshold for this, I’d expect the same.

@lemish34:
They dropped the island, and changed the minifigs, so there’s still some pretty significant variance between the project and the set. And I can’t remember which one it was, but I believe there was a regular Ideas set that looked virtually unchanged from the original project.

Even MegaConstrux white bricks are ridiculously white. I'm not sure how the formulas differ, but maybe LEGO needs to take a lesson from these other companies (unfortunately).

@Sethro3:
Natural ABS is closer to tan than white, and a little translucent. To get it as white as commercial-grade printer paper, you’d have more pigment than plastic. With other plastics that maybe have a transparent base, this may be less of an issue, and a stark white color may be possible. Styrene is a plastic where a very clean white is possible, but I’d rather carve my own bricks out of wood than build with polystyrene LEGO bricks.

Wow, you're actually right. The fins on the "girly" version are slightly more swept back and it has a blowhole. I wonder why such minor alterations were made. Makes no sense why the blowhole was removed. You'd want the dolphin to be able to breathe, plus it is a connection point!
Lego probably asked for a new dolphin mold, but the element designers were lazy and slightly altered the Friends 2013 mold because they had no knowledge of cetacean anatomy, and removed the accessory hole because they though it was just for accessories, like on most Friends-style animals, misunderstanding that similar holes exist on actual dolphins! Normally the mini doll animals are stylized counterparts to the more realistic minifigure animals, but here it is the opposite case!
Since they had the slot for a new mold, Lego should have chosen a "horizontal" dolphin like the old one, to complement every other marine animal they have done; sharks, sawfish, octopi, rays... Those have connections on the bottom so they could be attached to a hinge or clear stand if you want them to be in a jumping position, but instead the new dolphin sticks out like a sore thumb due to basically being a slightly altered stylized Friends mold! Even if you'd try hinging it to be in a normal swimming position, alongside the other animals from the National Geographic divers sets, for example, it wouldn't work because of its permanently curved back!
I'm sorry for the long-winded rant, but I was under the impression that Lego had simply been reusing the Friends dolphin all this time. That always peeved me at Lego's perceived laziness of reusing the piece, but now that the truth is known its so much worse knowing they could have done so much better with the new mold. At least the old dolphin and Friends dolphins can breathe!

They count towards the free shipping threshold. If they are over then it’s free shipping, if they are under you need to add something else but if it costs £40 and threshold is £50 you only need to add an extra £10.

The pictures used by brickset includes a captain’s cap. Are you saying those pictures are not of the actual set?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Martin_S:
That is exactly what I’m saying. The guy wearing the Captain’s cap is also wearing the “winter” Navy uniform, with white pants and a dark-blue top. The top photo shows the guy wearing a white shirt with dark-blue pants, and PFD.

This was the result of a contest held by LEGO Ideas to design a GWP with an aquatic theme. The boat with the Captain’s cap and the island won the vote, and then the Ideas team tweaked the design. One of the other major changes I can see is that the gunwale was brown flex-tube with white or dark-bley “brackets”, and now the entire gunwale is pearl-gold. The bowsprit is still partially brown, however.
