FC Barcelona Celebration

LEGO has unveiled a new gift with purchase on the Australian version of LEGO.com.

The 178-piece 40485 FC Barcelona Celebration, features five minifigures attired in the team's distinctive colours at the Spanish city's Font de Canaletes.

No further information, such as spend threshold, or whether a particular set has to be purchased to acquire it, has been provided, but I think it's safe to assume that it will be available from the 1st of September given that it's been revealed now.

Thanks to Robert at Promobricks for the news.

Odd but okay. Notably unlicensed shirts as I'm sure Nike would have asked a premium for the swoosh to be included.

Camp Nou set coming?

What have they got to celebrate? Club close to bankruptcy, players taking pay cuts, they just lost Messi, finished 3rd in the league last season.

I notice the plaque has 1899 on it, so maybe celebrating the last time they were successful? ;)

[for those who don’t get sarcasm, I know that’s when the club was founded.]

Is that fan climbing on the street furniture in an anti-social manner? if so that seems like an odd choice.

Apparently the wheel chair was stolen, so even more anti-social behaviour on display.

At least none of them are urinating or mooning.

By in United Kingdom,

I can only think Lego have paid around £1.5bn for this licence. Won't make their 2021 accounts look very pretty.

'Joking' aside it does seem a bit random unless it is a precursor of a Nou Camp set (which could rival the Colosseum as the most repetitive set ever - albeit a bit more colourful, at least).

Seems to me like they're waving a Catalonian flag and molesting street furniture, is this the Catalonian independence riots all over again?

Not when you look at fairly recent Catalan history...

I saw a pic of Camp Nou’s box on the internet somewhere. 5509 pieces, set 10284. So yes, Camp Nou set is coming.

By in United Kingdom,

Just noticing on the Aussie site under the price it says "Free Item". I wonder if this is a GWP with the Nou Camp Stadium and $29.99 is its nominal value.

By in Italy,

After Old Trafford and Camp Nou I will sooner or later be expecting/demanding a San Siro set. It is home to two of the best world renowned teams around, Internazionale F.C. and Milan (strictly in that order, please), so why not San Siro?

Let's hope they keep this arena-designing streak going, I like it.

Not even remotely authentic. No one is peeing in the fountain!

The one on the fountain may be mooning. Maybe that's why the rear isn't shown on the box?

All jokes aside, it's a tradition to celebrate there, and I'm sure it's officially tolerated.

If Lego was being truly inclusive by having a minifigure in a wheelchair it is a shame they didn't help them out by tiling over the floor rather than covering it in difficult to navigate studs.... although I suspect that studs are more in keeping with most wheelchair users' experience of civic design decisions.

Gravatar

@Bricklunch , The studs are needed to give the standing minifigures’ feet something to attach to. I doubt they’re meant to represent bumpy paving.

@Golem25:
That was one of the weird things I noticed during the Olympics. Most team sports have sponsors for the entire team, so their uniforms are all sourced from one company and bear the same logo on all players’ jerseys. Beach Volleyball is more temporary partnerships, and players are ranked as individuals. It’s therefore very common, apparently, for the two players on one team to have identical uniforms bearing logos from different companies. I didn’t realize how this factored in at the time, but during one of the matches the commentators were talking about how one of the US men ended up not being able to go, and his partner had to call up another player out of the blue to come join him. They had to get new uniforms made, and he commentators were talking about how hard it was to make sure they matched. During the match when this discussion was taking place, they were wearing tie-dyed shirts, so I figured it had to do with getting the patterns to match as closely as possible, but now I’m wondering if they had to coordinate rush delivery from two competing companies.

@gunther_schnitzel:
Plus, they play soccer, which is like team jogging with a ball.

By in Canada,

I don't have any particular interest in sports or this team in particular, but it's certainly a charming little vignette! I like how it portrays a diverse/varied group of fans as well as a cool-looking landmark from Barcelona that I was previously not aware of!

I'd be interested to see if LEGO makes any other vignettes like this in the future, with fans of football clubs from other countries celebrating around landmarks they associate with their chosen team. Although, again, not being a football enthusiast, I don't know how many other cities even HAVE cool vignette-sized landmarks that are strongly associated with the local FC.

In general, I always find it neat when sets celebrate different countries around the world, whether it's their sports teams, their architecture, or other sorts of cultural traditions. And I'm sure there are plenty of set designers who'd jump at the chance to create 18+ sets celebrating the countries they hail from, whether sports-related or otherwise!

Lego have to consider the marketability of the team when partnering with them. Manchester United and FC Barcelona have a worldwide fanbase. Italian football doesn't have that. They won't sell nearly enough San Siros to justify the cost.

After the recent history of near-bankrupcy and other setbacks, it does indeed seem to be an odd choice to do fans of this particular team. But what do I know, I don't care for football/soccer anyway. Not my kind of sport. Happy for fans of Barcelona though, now they have at least something to celebrate ;-)

They need some longevity in the sales, and I dont think a side in the Championship next season brings that.

I think you underestimate how entertaining an Arsenal equivalent of this set would be. Five miserable minifigures gathered around to watch Arsenal Fan TV panelists screaming at one another, with one hopelessly optimistic contributor.

I speak as an Arsenal fan, by the way!

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Wow, this image omits the most attractive fig (at least the one with most desirable accessory). That huge Barcelona flag should be great for their fans. This set is probably more attractive than the stadium itself.

By in Australia,

The main thing about this I find weird is that it was found on the Australia site lol!! It was a good 6wks after the mini Adidas shoe launched that it was available here and then only a few days. The 10th Anniversary Ninjago Brickheadz didn't even make it to the shop at home on July 1st.

Interestingly if you search for the set number nothing comes up. It's nearly 7am Monday here, which is usually the day that the VIP updates if something is going to happen, but it's still the same, will change on Wednesday for the new month double points sets so maybe will go live then with the new releases?

The retail group that is opening the Lego Certified Stores in Australia and New Zealand launched their online shopping at the start of August (yay!!) and are a better bet for some of the GWP's, but they have nothing at this stage on this set when searched either.

Given the size of the set and the number of minifigs, I would expect it to be a $200AUD spend at least, so about 100 pounds or 120 USD. For comparison the recent sail boat was $300AUD and the Adidas shoe was I think $170AUD.

Rather than a price threshold, I think it’ll be a GWP with purchase of the Camp Nou stadium, like the Colosseum with Chariot or the statue with Old Trafford.

Definite pass.

So the specifications states: "Join FC Barcelona fans at the iconic Font de Canaletes as they celebrate a win by their beloved team. Includes 4 LEGO® minifigures and accessories in club colours."

FC Barcelona Celebration, Price $29.99, Free item

Not exactly a winner for the broader Australian market noting the dominance of AFL, NRL and Netball... but an attractive set nonetheless. LEGO even got the spelling of colours correct!

If that is supposed to be a fountain, where is the representation of water? A few transparent blue studs wouldn’t have been too difficult (and judging by some comments here, maybe a transparent yellow).

Cute little set; I hope it doesn't get tied to buying the full-sized arena, which doesn't interest me at all!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I realize that for some strange, incomprehensible reason that Europeans find soccer to be fun to watch. But I really wish that Lego would make a UCS soccer set targeted towards Americans. I mean, wouldn’t it be great to get a 5000 piece field with a bunch of 5 year olds picking the grass and their parents taking pictures of them not playing.

Seriously however, I don’t understand how these soccer sets could have enough demand outside of their own city to warrant a major release. If Lego released a line of ballparks, of course I’d be interested in it, but I would only ever buy Wrigley.

So you're obviously from Chicago.

Me, an Australian, would have no interest in it at all. I don't understand how anybody outside that city would have any interest in Wrigley Field. But if they made a set of Lang Park I'd be on that in a heartbeat.

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The only thing I know about "football" is from The IT Crowd.

So with that said, I won't be buying this set. I don't see the appeal. I don't mind stadiums. I don't even watch American football, but I had given though to building a local college stadium. As much as I like baseball and have given thought to building a baseball stadium, there really isn't that much interesting about them. They are giant ovals or circles with pretty repetitive features. At least Fenway has some asymmetry.

However, if this is a freebie for any set purchases, I might still end up getting it. If it is a freebie for only the soccer set, then I won't get it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Rare_White_Ape:
I understand it. The obsession with baseball, not so much, but I grew up on the west coast of the Mitten, in a resort town where at least half the boats in the harbor were registered out of Chicago. I knew people who had moved there from Chicago, and people who moved from there to Chicago. When it came to baseball, fans were pretty evenly split between the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs, and it would take about the same amount of time to drive to either stadium. Think of US states like EU nations, and it makes a lot more sense. Most states only have one pro team each for baseball, basketball, football, and maybe even hockey. Some states don’t even have any pro teams in any of those sports. Only a few markets in any league are big enough to support two competing teams (offhand I know NYC and Chicago have two baseball teams each...not that I care). So sports markets generally stretch out to include the entire state, maybe some of the surrounding areas (especially when that’s the closest urban base), plus a lot of people carry their fandom with them when they move across the country.

@CCC:
And in the US, they advertised bringing over broadcasts of the British Premier League by having Jason Sudeikis portray an American football coach who gets hired to coach soccer. And now those ads have spawned a TV series based on the same character and premise. In the US, it would not shock me one tiny bit if more people watch the comedy than the soccer games.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Still waiting for a ParalympicGB collectible minifigs set to complement the 2012 TeamGB range.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@jsutton:
They really didn’t have any way of depicting any sort of Paralympian at the time, short of the Pirates trifecta (peg leg, hook hand, and eyepatch), and I know the classic peg leg looks nothing like the running blades they use in modern times (I have actually been recording all the NBC coverage this year, but have not had time to start watching it, so outside of running blades and what little I’ve seen in ads during the regular Olympics, I must confess I have very little knowledge of what any of the events look like). Now they do have a wheelchair, but it looks nothing like the three-wheeled racing versions they use for track. And it’s about nine years too late for them to expand the Team GB wave, since the London Games of 2012 are well and truly concluded.
