Here's the press release for the 37th LEGO Ideas set:

21329 Fender Stratocaster, rated 18+, 1,074 pieces
$99 / £89 / €99 / 159.99 AUD / 139.99 CAD
Available from 1st October at LEGO.com

The LEGO Group announces the new LEGO Ideas Fender Stratocaster set – created by LEGO Ideas fan designer Tomáš Letenay.

The iconic Fender Stratocaster guitar, famously played by music legends and emerging artists alike and the industry standard guitar sound for music across genres, has now been meticulously reimagined in LEGO bricks.

Whether you are an old school rock and roll fan, an indie rock, R&B or heavy metal lover or just passionate about music, the LEGO model of the 1970s Fender Stratocaster is sure to be a crowd pleaser and includes the option to either build a red or black version of the iconic guitar.

The guitar features six strings, poseable tuning pegs and a tremolo arm for all the distortion you can handle. Plus, there is also a folding display stand, and an accompanying foot pedal and amp. The amplifier’s back and top covers can also be removed to show its inner speaker code, wiring and intricate details such as the tubes, speaker and motherboard.

Tomáš Letenay, a fan designer from Slovakia, originally entered the design into the LEGO Ideas Music to Our Ears competition, but the reviews board at the LEGO Group loved the creation so much they commissioned it. Speaking about the design, Tomáš commented, “I used to play electric guitar when I was a teenager and I always dreamed of owning a Fender Stratocaster - but I could never afford it. The competition on LEGO Ideas gave me the chance to create it in LEGO bricks. The Stratocaster was my gateway into music and I love seeing my LEGO design with the stand. I am hoping that other guitar fans get as much joy out of building it as I have.”

Discussing why the LEGO Ideas team chose Tomáš’ design, Federico Begher, VP of Global Marketing at the LEGO Group said, “The Fender Stratocaster guitar is iconic and has been at the heart of so many incredible songs over the years. We know many of our fans are passionate about music, and we hope they enjoy the attention to detail in the not only guitar but also the accessories, such as the strap and the amp.”

One of the most influential electric guitars in music history, the Fender Stratocaster is a sleek, optimally functional instrument that was developed with the direct feedback of many artists. Built to accommodate the needs of all players from beginners to hobbyists to the greatest guitar legends of all time, the Stratocaster is nothing short of iconic. Since its inception in 1954, the Stratocaster has cemented its position at the top of the guitar chain with its contoured body being synonymous with electric guitars themselves.

“The Fender Stratocaster was designed to help artists unlock their creativity, and decades later, the model continues to pioneer the future of guitar playing with its distinct sound and undeniable impact on popular music,” said Richard Bussey, VP, Accessories, Lifestyle and Licensing. “As the Stratocaster has developed a cult following through the years, so has the LEGO Group. Bringing these two brands together marks an iconic musical moment for a passionate group of guitar and LEGO brick lovers.”

We'll be publishing our review later this afternoon.

I mean, I like the interchangeability, but I’m curious too see who will buy this. It’s cool, but it’s expensive and I don’t see a real use or reason to have this unless your really into guitar/ music

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's amazing! I'm gunna get one, and make it sunburst instead of red. Might have to modify it quite a bit though...

Gravatar
By in United States,

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I like it a lot, but it is just way too expensive. € 70 would seem reasonable to me. But then, it will be on sale somewhere. Good for the designer, now at least he may be able to get a real one!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really cool model. The red or black option is nice but that's an awful lot of bricks you're paying for and not using. Even more curious now they're trying out the multiple color test.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Probably missing the concept here, but if you wanted to get into electric guitars or even just display one wouldn't you rather buy an introductory or 2nd hand guitar for around the same price?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh my word. Lego. What are you doing to me!!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

About those colours in Legosets... Maybe it is an idea to sell the basic and the colours in seperate boxes. As of this one, I would prefer to have this one in blue or yellow.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I'm a musician but I don't like it, I miss the times where Lego made toys instead of display pieces.

Why do they keep trying to imitate ordinary items? What will be next? Toothbrush? Toilet? Headphones? Air humidifier?

This is a Lego blog...why does this question pop up every time? Piano...typewriter...Fender guitar. Some people find everyday things built in Lego interesting. It's a very simple concept.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I would've expected to see something closer to (though not exactly) life-size for that price. It looks way too small instead.

Then again, the smaller size makes it easier to display it as a LEGO model, even in places you wouldn't expect to display a guitar. But then that price tag seems much.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Unlike the NES, this one can be had for a lot less than the real thing (depending on year).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love this. Certainly not a day one purchase but one to put on my Christmas list. Oddly the amplifier is what has my attention more so than the actual guitar, all the tubes and capacitors shown in the photos on the lego website look fantastic.

I wish it wasn’t as expensive as it is, but I imagine part of that is the premium having the Fender name slapped on everything.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Apologies to the designer of this one, but that looks horrible. The shape of the body is "ok" but the headstock is extremely misshapen to the point of looking like a caricature. This is one of those sets like the Adidas shoe where I just don't see the point if you can't get much closer to the source material.

Admittedly I'm probably much more familiar with the correct shape of the guitar than a lot of Lego fans though. I've got three Strats and would love to grab this but there's no way I would ever want it out on display looking like this. Sad pass.

You are aware of... well, just about every Lego set besides the 18+ range, right?

Gravatar

I see a new concave curved slope 1x2xX

Gravatar
By in Poland,

wow it's really nice tho it doesn't look to me like 99 euro worth set so I'll wait till price drop a bit.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

FYI - Price in the UK is 89.99 (it is listed on the Lego website)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great looking MOC but I don't find it interesting enough to buy. Display items aren't really what I buy Lego for. I think I have two - Saturn V and a pencil holder. Saturn V is incredible and the pencil holder actually holds pencils and pens on my desk at work.

C+ grade for the guitar. Great design but zero interest.

Can any set that's designed with adults in mind really be anything other than a display piece?
Lego has shifted focus over the years - it used to be that the bricks were the toy and you could use them to make models, but these days Lego is something you have to build in order to get a toy to play with. At least with adult sets, the emphasis is shifted back to focus on the act of construction, even if the finished product is usually display only.

"Why do they keep trying to imitate ordinary items? What will be next? Toothbrush? Toilet? Headphones? Air humidifier?"
Check Lego Ideas, an Ultimate Collectors toilet was uploaded a while back and was doing rather well last I saw.

I'm very impressed with the detail and quality of the model. I'm surprised by the size of it, as I'd had the impression from the competition that it was supposed to just be a small GWP, but it's definitely a good build.

You mean all those sets that are either licensed or juniorised?

Gravatar
By in United States,

As a music lover, eagerly looking forward to this set. It will make a great display. Finding that the speaker also has the 'works' inside is a nice surprise.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Who else wants to do a Pete Townshend with this thing?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks cool! I'm guessing my son will be adding this to his Christmas list.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I own several guitars and basses and whilst this is a cool concept, I'm essentially just immediately wondering if I could modify various sections on this to turn it into a Telecaster rather than a Stratocaster. Some guitarists will appreciate this with a knowing wink, but I'm totally "a Tele guy" which makes me "not a Strat guy" (try imagining Joe Strummer playing a Strat and it just "looks wrong"). The little amp and the strap are awesome though. If I can figure out a way to modify the pickguard shape, pickup configuration, top horn shape and the headstock shape into a Tele, I might well pick this up!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The strings better be tight!! Baggy strings annoy the hell out of me!!!!

Printed fender 1x4 slope by the looks of the Lego shop pge :)

I like it but pricey…

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Oh my! 129,95 € in Lego.com when purchasing from Finland. But it's so nice... I really have to think about this one. Too bad pearl white isn't possible to build...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I sure like the case that comes with the mega version. For the price, does the lego version come with a case?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I do like it, and I think for the relatively small scale they did a pretty good job. Love the details on the inside of the amp too! Too bad the decoration on the amp is done with stickers instead of prints. And for this price (probably partially because of the 2 color variations) the amp better goes all the way up to 11!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The amp and the strap are the best parts.
The headstock is horrible and the body looks like a $50 no name knock off guitar.

With something like this... You need it damn near perfect of those of us guitar/Lego people, those who this set is aimed towards, aren't gonna like it.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

I had totally forgotten about this, even more that it was an Ideas project.

Gravatar
By in France,

I'm looking forward to this personally. As a fan of guitars in general this is a must get for me. I will say though, I kinda wish they'd made it just a tad bigger even if that meant only in one colour just so that some of the shapes could be better refined. The headstock doesn't look that great because of that and the pick guard is lacking some curves (and highlights the need for specialised plates). Other niggles might require some creative redesign, like the use of the antenna piece for the switch, though I can't think what piece would work better in this instance...

Still at £89.99 that's a better price for a lego display model than a lot of recent 18+ models that were recently released (not sure why the announcement has it at £99.99 though). Some of this price will reflect the brand licencing from Fender as well since it's not just any old guitar this is supposed to represent.

Rock on

As a guitarist I will definitively buy this soon after release. Am quite happy with the design.

If you want a playset... go.. buy a playset...
LEGO have always made display models: the UCS sets have been around for 2 decades, even earlier larger models were produced.

And to be frank, I would happily buy a LEGO air humidifier.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Probably should just speak for yourself bud..

I mean its a LEGO set, of course its not going to be perfect

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have no interest in guitars, but this is beautiful. They really captured the look. And the US price is decent enough. I may have to get it (but then again, who knows since money is always limited).

You could use the extra black parts and mod the shaping, and the pick guard. Then you’d have a black tele body, and a red strat body to and could swap the neck between them.

Modding to a telecaster has to be a hundred times easier than modifying to a precision bass, which is what I want to try to do. I think you'd want to do more than just have swappable exterior bodies, since the white section is an extra layer of plates and has a different shape between the two designs. It would be more work and less versatile, but you'd get a better output for that trade-off.

Not a fair comparison, most model cars (at least Lego's) are replicating sports cars or supercars that 99% of the population don't have use for or cannot ever afford, so it's nice to have a model of it. And they are good toys as well.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I get that it’s a difficult shape to recreate with Lego but this is pretty ugly. And what does a tremolo arm have to do with distortion?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

We really are getting a new 'adult' set every week, are we? Because at this point it gets less and less easy to act enthusiastically. I mean, we get a new unveiled one nearly every week now!
Again, I'm happy for those that this is aimed at. But how many 18+ sets do we need in one year?

About the thing itself... I wonder how necessary the extra black base really is for the average buyer. I mean... if you want you can display it in another colour. But 100% of the time you'll have an extra, unfinished and unsightly guitar base left over. I think they were a bit too lenient with the budget on this one.

October 2020 - LEGO announces it will make a Fender Stratocaster.

May 2021 - Mega releases its Fender Stratocaster.

September 2021 - "LEGO COPIED MEGA!""

My point was more that I find it interesting that Fender licenced their design to both Mega as well as LEGO, two competing brands of building blocks, at the same time. They even supply an original Fender pick/plektrum for each Mega set.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

If there’s anything I - maybe - love more than Lego is guitars. I play, own and build/mod mainly strats and unfortunately, this time, I must say that, IMHO, the designer did not make it. There is a magic in strats, (and teles, LPs …) which is really hard to capture with Lego: the sinuosity of the body and pick guard, the unmistakable headstock. The piano’s shape was very good but this is really a miss for me, it’s ugly, no offense! Ciao

I have no problem with these real life objects/display pieces. This looks great--it's not for me, but still a very nice model with braod appeal. My NES is one of my favorite sets, and the Bonsai tree is probably my wife's first ever Lego set. It's the obscure/weird stuff I don't get--like who's buying a shoe? Anyway, can we get one life size now? :)

Yes, The LEGO Toilet will be the next Lego Ideas object to be made after the Ship in a Bottle, Typewriter, Fender Stratocaster, and Earth Globe. At least the toilet will only be about $50 and it actually looks very accurate to the real thing.

Because people like them? I know someone who collects both LEGO & guitars & he’s really excited for this. Another was really excited for the typewriter. I have Ship in a Bottle & now the HP chess set(I held off buying the regular store exclusive one for ages). I regret not buying the Maze.

I just think they’re fun. As a LEGO collector it’s a neat idea to have ordinary objects in relatively 1:1 scale. Sure I can go out & buy a bonsai tree...but as a LEGO fan, it’s more fun this way.

I can assure you that this LEGO set costs far, far less than the object it depicts. A Fender Stratocaster is not at all low-cost. Obviously, it doesn't cost as much as a Ferrari, but still not cheap.

By in United States,

@Mr__Thrawn :
Oof. I just looked up Fender Strats on Guitar Center, and you’re not kidding. A hard case to carry it starts at $170. The dirt-cheapest one they have is a pink model that’s $650, down from $800. For $1200, you’ve can get either a 50’s or 60’s “road worn” model (they distress the body to make it look used, like wearing the paint off on the upper lobe where your right forearm rests). Top dollar goes to a Final Fantasy tie-in (dunno if that’s the game or movie series) for $3500. Interestingly, the most expensive Strat with an artist’s name attached is someone most people commenting here have probably never heard of. $2600 gets you a replica of the 1954 Strat that Eric Johnson used to record Cliffs of Dover. He’s someone who guitarists like Clapton look up to.

Gravatar

Whoever wrote the press release clearly doesn’t play guitar lol. Instant buy for me, this is miles better than I could’ve imagined with the second body and the amp. The strap! And picks lmao. I think I’ll use it as a base and I’ll try to moc my mockingbird… MOCingbird if you will?

Complain?

Naaah, OP just wants toys that are suitable for adults;
preferably cast in solid gold, but at the same time not too heavy
and also with a decent number of pieces, but not too expensive.
Let's say a price per part of up to five cents...

Is that really too much to ask?
