Here's the press release for the 38th LEGO Ideas set, the long-awaited Home Alone house, which passed review way back in June 2020. It has more pieces than any other Ideas set, far more than I expected.

21330 Home Alone
Rated 18+, 3,955 pieces
€249.99 / $249.99 / £229.99
Available from 1st November at LEGO.com.

The LEGO Group has revealed the new LEGO Ideas Home Alone set, an incredibly detailed recreation of the McCallister family residence from the much-loved Home Alone film, where mayhem ensued as Kevin was left to his own devices and the bumbling burglars Harry and Marv descended.

Now in brick form for the first time, the LEGO Ideas Home Alone set is based on a design submitted to the LEGO Ideas platform by 28-year-old Alex Storozhuk from Ukraine. At an impressive 3,955 pieces, it is also the largest set created from a LEGO Ideas concept.

The LEGO Ideas Home Alone set is instantly recognisable, perfectly capturing the grand McCallister family home, and is also packed with features that tell the story of Kevin’s holiday antics. As well as the exterior, the interior layout is true to the film and includes the ground and first floor, kitchen, basement and attic.

A new opening mechanism opens up the house for full enjoyment; the walls separate in the middle to open sideways and fully reveal the interior, while the roof also opens upwards. In addition, the set comes complete with the main characters of the film in LEGO minifigure form, including; Kevin, robbers Harry and Marv, old man Marley – and Kevin’s mum Kate.

Every room is packed with details from the film, such as the after-shave lotion from “The Scream” bathroom scene, Buzz’s pet tarantula, the robbers’ van, the paint cans used to knock them down, and the treehouse with zipline. Other features include the fireplace, Christmas tree, a toy train, grandfather clock, dining table and record player.

As the festive season draws in, the LEGO Ideas Home Alone set is designed to provide the ultimate holiday at home together and a unique building experience. Split into an Advent Calendar-like 24 build bags, you can build the iconic house in sequence with the film, starting with meeting the robbers and their van and ending with Kevin’s reunion with his mum, Kate.

Talking about his inspiration for the set, the LEGO fan designer Alex Storozhuk, commented: “Just like every 90s kid, I grew up watching Home Alone, and it takes a very special place in my heart. I can’t even imagine holidays without it. This film is very nostalgic and makes those warm childhood memories come up every time.”

Taking Alex’s original design and creating the final set was the job of Antica Bracanov, LEGO Designer. Talking about the task, Antica commented: “Bringing Alex’s Home Alone house to life has been brilliant fun. He’d thought about every aspect, from the layout of the rooms to the use of colour and of course the details from the film to make it instantly recognisable.

“Following the themes of the film, we wanted to make the experience as immersive as possible for fans of LEGO building and the film. The step-by-step build which mirrors the film, and the ability to open up the set and see inside lends itself well to hours of joyful focus this holiday season – just add a festive backdrop and a certain Christmas film!”

The LEGO Ideas Home Alone set will be available from 1st November 2021 at the recommended retail price of €249.99 / $229.99 / £249.99.

  • 3,955 pieces
  • Complete with 5 key minifigures from the film including Kevin, Harry, Marv, Kate and old man Marley.
  • The walls split in the middle to open sideways and fully reveal the interior, and the roof opens upwards.
  • Each floor is modular and removable to allow easier access to the inside of the model
  • Price: €249.99 / $249.99 / £229.99 / 399.99 AUD / 349.99 CAD
  • LEGO Ideas Designer: Alex Storozhuk
  • LEGO Designers: Antica Bracanov and Enrique Belmonte Beixer

You can view more pictures on the set details page and we'll be publishing our review later this afternoon.

Bless this highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese dinner and the people who sold it on sale. Amen.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is incredible. It’ll be a great Christmas display piece…at some point.

It’s been an expensive year for LEGO already.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Day 1 purchase, looks amazing.

If I’m being a stickler, this would’ve been one of the sets that could’ve benefited from a few more interactive ‘traps’ and play features.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Interesting that they used the short legs for Joe Pesci's character here, but not for George Costanza in the Seinfeld set.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I'll give it a whirl.

Gravatar
By in France,

There are so many masterpieces in cinema and Lego chooses this crap, congrats :-(

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't know exactly what I was expecting but the exterior seems a bit bland. It seems like there was some optimism it could be incorporated in the Winter Village but it's far too big. No interest beyond that. The interior looks to be packed with features and references so hopefully those looking forward to the set are happy with it. Congrats to the designer but it's an easy pass for me.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This looks to be like one of the best sets of the year. I see nothing wrong with it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

£229.99 for the UK. I think the press release is wrong as it says 229.99 on the lego.com store.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I've been wanting a Big LEGO "Classic" styled house for a long time as I never got a set like 4954 or 6754 .

I'm not in a hurry for this, but looks pretty good.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm very impressed with the overall design and the display elements. I love how the individual areas of the rooms open and articulate and bring back the highlights from the movie. This is one of my most-desired sets of the year and I can't wait to have it on display.

It's got everything except the kitchen sink... no wait, it's there too. Yup, it's impressive.

Pretty sure this'll sell better than LEGO Ingmar Bergman sets would, though. Would I like an Eraserhead or Citizen Kane set? Of course. Do I expect them to make one? Of course not.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s a very nice recreation of the movie’s house! The only fault I can really see is that there are far too few death traps.

I think this is another one of those sets where the IP is going to sell it. Kinda reminds me of those small winter village houses they have in the Hallmark stores.

Yes. so it seems. It would be unusual for it to be 1:1:1 for £:$:€.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

When was the last time we got that many 45-degree roof tiles of the same color in a house set?

This is one of the rare occasions in which I voted "No, it doesn't interest me". I never watched Home Alone. It just was never my thing. And I guess I'd rather have houses that are smaller in scale than Modular Buildings while still somewhat complete with four walls, like (the still ridiculously expensive due to having a B model) 70831.

I can only hope the creation of this product sets a precedent for more houses with four walls and a roof going forward! And great to have brown brickwork bricks.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

The new door with the flap is excellent! Wonder if there's any way to use a glass pane in it.

And are those mini train track tiles printed?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lovely set, but crikey, another £230… Lego is continuing with these big expensive sets… gone are the days of having a few sets a year that broke into the £100+ barrier. Now your lucky if any adult themed sets are below £150. Can Lego no longer design a £50-75 adult themed set?!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

My only complaint is for that price it would have been nice to get a couple more minifigures.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

It's a Christmas miracle!

I thought it'd be a little dinky facade like the Sesame Street set but this is amazing, probably better than the Simpsons House (which I would consider the previous best Lego house)

One thing I don't like is that Kevin has mid-legs, making him the same height as Joe Pesci which doesn't seem right

Gravatar
By in Australia,

R2D2 legs in the fireplace are brilliant. Looks to be an amazing Christmas themed house build, and a better selection of figures than I was expecting. Though I do question the overall accuracy of the house and its play features.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Honestly looks like a really big moc to me.

That's the first thing I noticed to!!

I believe they're using the Container, Cupboard 2 x 3 x 2 Door (4533) as flap, which doesn't come in trans clear.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Home Alone was a staple Christmas movie in the 1990s. It was funny, had an obnoxiously likeable kid (think early-era Bart Simpson), a nice moral lesson, yadda yadda. This set may be directed nostalgia, but for those of us who think this is a good build, it *works.*

Gravatar
By in Japan,

A licensed ideas set I actually want, nice

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO’s pretty sharp when it comes to releasing these sets based on older IP’s. Looney Tunes CMF around the release of Space Jam 2, and now Home Alone in time for its Disney+ reboot. That could be a coincidence as this is an Ideas set, but still!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, wow, wow. Fantastic set.

So happy to see that women designers are starting to get more of the higher profile sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Although I am not the biggest fan of Home Alone, this is a good build.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Looks great, its massive, its expensive but good value for the brick count. Its an odd choice for an Ideas set, are its only going to appeal to a marginal group of AFOLs but good luck to them. I like the film but not enough to buy the set. Its a "meh" from me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Home Alone is my favorite Christmas movie. I watch it every year. This set is a little out of my price range, unfortunately. It looks great, though!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Reminds me of a larger version of Model Town House 4954, but with far more detail on the inside for those who can remember the films.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Hmm... not convinced. It looks like a (good) MOC, the original submission was better IMHO. But day one purchase nevertheless.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

In the past I've read many times comments for this type of submissions to LEGO Ideas saying that they will be rejected because they are modulars. Is this considered a modular building? If not, what's the difference? I'm curious.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Absolutely LOVE it!!! Have been waiting SO long to see this since the idea got approved - day 1 purchase for me!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks like a good parts pack for 2x2 windows. :)

Gravatar

Oh my word. It’s beautiful and huge. Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals!

They're, uh, trying to sell a million units. Let us know which cinematic masterpieces they can do that with.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really dig the advent spin that LEGO suggested. Home Alone is one of my son's favorite movies, so I'll use that as an excuse to grab this, hopefully at launch!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now can we get a very Brady Lego set?

With the immense detail of the Home Alone set, we know it's might be possible.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

This set is wonderful - but so very expensive! Btw I love that new door with cat flap piece - so useful

Gravatar

While this set isn't for me, I am pleased that there is now a Pesci minifig. Hopefully that Goodfellas CMF series comes along any day now.

Haha, I was not talking about these kinds of masterpieces :-) For me Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece, and definitely deserves its Lego sets. Home alone does not.

Gravatar

Wow packed with details, love it. Michael Jordan cut out included, nice.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I get the feeling that, if I'd seen the film, this might have been a day 1 purchase. As it is, I think it looks pretty good, although not amazing. A probable buy at some point though.

Gravatar

I am not too sure I like the exterior. The colors are a bit dull. The Canadian price is a bit steep too ($350)

Well it’s just one set, not a whole line. And I guarantee that, at least in the US, which is a huge lego market, this set has a ton of appeal. But I respect your opinion of course, there are plenty of sets I don’t think should have been made but have been.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Altair1970:
Wednesday, the week before Christmas, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra plays the movie on a giant screen with live orchestral accompaniment. It sells out every year. We set up a layout a day or two before that stays up through their Home for the Holidays concert that weekend, so you better believe this will be a staple feature in that layout starting this year. So, when’s the last time you’ve seen people dressed to the nines for a movie that’s three decades old?

You had no childhood if you didn't watch "this crap" on TV every winter holiday season.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

I love the movie but it seems like huge set and I'm not convinced that it's worth buying even if you like the movie.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Makes sense they didn't include Kevin:s gun. That would be too problematic these days.

Gravatar
By in Hong Kong,

I never really realized this movie was so popular (in the USA?)

I watched it once when I was a child, it wasn't bad, but nothing that really stuck in my mind.... I seem to remember there was a sequel too, that was a bit crap.

But this is a nice set, anyway, and a lot more interesting than another sitcom stage!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Those Tile, Round Corner 4 x 4 Macaroni Wide that are printed(?) with a train track pattern will be great for microscale MOCs. Now they need 1x4 (or other length) tiles with a compatible print.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The rest of the Family will be released in three battle packs; $20.00 each.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Day 1 purchase for me. My family loves this movie. Now what we need is the Griswalds house from Christmas Vacation. That would even be a day -1 purchase for us, if that was possible (without designing ourselves)!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This turned out absolutely amazing! A Day 1 purchase for me.

My only minor nitpicks at first glance:
- A couple more minifigs would have been nice. (No Buzz..??)
- Old Man Marley doesn’t look very accurate
- The use of black 1x2 grille pieces for the window shutters is a bit bland. I actually prefer the original design here

Quite telling tbh. ;-)

Objectively it's just a stupid romp that only has so many fans because a) it's a Christmas movie (and who doesn't love those, right?) and b) many have loving memories of seeing it for the first time during their childhood.

Calling it a masterpiece is more than a stretch, it's plain ridiculous. By the same logic you could call any Fast&Furious or Naked Gun movie a masterpiece too.

Although I agree, sets based on most movies that are considered true masterpieces would quite probably not sell.
Notable exceptions being Wizard of Oz (the minifigs seemed quite popular) and of course A New Hope.

By the way, that is not to say I dislike the set, I just have a hard time calling movies like this a masterpiece. It's a classic no doubt of course, but that's something entirely different.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If they do a follow up set of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, will it include a Donald Trump minifigure? (He had a cameo in the film).

Gravatar
By in Canada,

OMG. Love it. I was just complaining I have no more space for more sets, need to make room.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Fun little detail: The two turtle dove ornaments are found on the tree. An easter egg to Home Alone 2.

"I've been swimming in raw sewage. I love it!" In other words, the Naked Gun movies are indeed masterpieces. I can't speak to the Fast or Furious films.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Medium nougat would've worked as well but it looks solid and complete. Very close to the submission and it includes so many wonderful easter eggs. Well done, LEGO.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Great set!

But SO expensive in Canada... With taxes, ($349.99 cad + 15% = $403), this thing is $327 US or €281. Ouch.

But I love it! I'm kind of conflicted.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Regarding Home Alone, it's a great film! Definitely an American "classic" to the degree that '90s movies can be considered classic. My wife loves it, which makes this set one of the rare IPs that she will actively encourage me to purchase ("Oh? You went to the LEGO store and DIDN'T buy the Home Alone set? Hmm."). Her immediate response to seeing this article was "Cool!" Let's just say that she likes James Cameron's Titanic well enough, but seeing that announcement did not elicit much of a reaction.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I do like the house and even a couple of the figures. Too many stickers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If you were whining about 10291 endorsing "social forms", here's a set depicting the social forms of the white, heteronormative, Protestant, American middle-class nuclear family of 1990: isn't that the dream? I love sets that depict houses but this one may be harder to integrate into displays due to snow. The shutters are also butt-fugly and an absolute disaster. Overall, a great set, though.

ROFL

I almost forgot about that line.
True, the Naked Gun movies are pure comedy gold and full of highly quotable side-splitting one-liners, but I still would not call them masterpieces. I think even ZAZ would agree on that (I think I even remember them saying something along those lines during one of their audio commentaries).

One thing I will criticize about the set though versus the original submission is the changes to the front exterior. I think those definitely have ruined the look quite a bit for me by making it much blander than necessary.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I thought this was an odd choice when it was approved on Ideas, and the set doesn’t do much for me. But that’s fine - my wish list is already too long - and it seems like it’s being well received by fans of the movie and people who like it just for being a detailed 4 sided house.

You mean everyone who was already an adult when Home Alone was released and therefore couldn’t have watched the film every winter season ‘had no childhood’? Bit of an overstatement methinks.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hmmm, so is it a day one purchase before it goes out of stock (because it sounds like its going to be popular) or do you dig in for the long haul and wait for Black Friday x2 VIP points with everything crossed thats it still (or back) in stock……

I like it a lot btw, but don’t think its Ghostbuster Firehouse beater, thats its nearest neighbour for me.

And this is several times more expensive than City and Friends houses. And even more expensive than a typical modular.

Most Lego buildings have always been dollhouse style, and were frequently only 2-4 studs deep in the past. So today's 5-10 deep Friends buildings are a nice improvement.

@MeganL:
Do we have any idea what the set designer gender ratio is? I recently realized my LUG has had over a dozen women join in our 21-year history, but some of them were mothers and wives of other members and most of those either don’t build much/at all, or exclusively build sets. I’ve never asked ages, but I believe all of them are currently 50+ with one possible exception. And then recently we had a female teenager join for the first time. So that’s a pretty large age gap that we just skipped past. My suspicion is that it ties into when the minifig was introduced, and that it caused LEGO sets to quickly shift from a coed experience to a boy-oriented one in the US (I hear this is not the case in Europe).

I know from a Brickworld keynote speech several years ago that they were trying to land the girls market for decades and just repeatedly failed, where Friends finally broke the barrier, with Elves and Disney Princess following right behind.

So, if their pool of set designers reflects this 30+ year age gap to any significant degree, I have to wonder if they’ve been focusing their female talent on actually retaining the girls market, leaving few of them free to work on themes that you’d expect to be gender-neutral, like Ideas.

Well, now we’re getting into semantics as to what would be considered a masterpiece and what that term even means. I admittedly may not consider Home Alone a masterpiece by most definitions, but it is a movie that manages to include slap-stick humor with heart felt messages and Christmas joy that has resonated with people for decades now. Many holiday themed movies, and movies in general, aren’t able to achieve that, so in that sense, yes, this movie is a masterpiece.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Is this the first Lego doll's house? It's odd they haven't done something like it before. Maybe that's too much Playmo territory: it'd be fiddly moving the minifigs around.
I couldn't get my head round the roof colour until I realised it's a Winter scene.
Duh.
Oh yeah- there's a sleigh and decorations and things too, so Christmas theme- explains the timing. I need to get a bigger screen.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This set is amazing but I bought the Lego Central Perk set for £35.00, which has 1070 pieces. I couldn’t justify spending £230.00 on this. Hopefully, I’ll be able to pick it up closer to £150.00 in a sale. It’s very well done though.

Well this made my shortlist for comment of the year. Although, now I’m sadly left wanting a Jack Nance minifig.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I don't recall the movie enough to know what's what when it comes to features in this set, only saw the movie the one time I think. If the building was another colour I would be interested in it just as a full building to add to a Modular line up, but it's just too dark and uninteresting to pay $400 Australian for it. Good luck to the person who designed this, I hope for them that it sells well :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

The facade looks absolutely amazing, beautiful design! And a back wall... Unheard of! The interior looks a little generic unfortunately, I would have liked to see some of the traps more prominently displayed. Still, it has a great level of detail all over, and should be a fun build! The minifigures look very nice as well, although I hope Marley has a beard printed on his head, as that Santa beard piece just doesn't fit. Harry and Marv are excellent though!

Here in the US this IS a masterpiece in cinema. "

That's an interesting interpretation of "masterpiece." I'm always fascinated by the way that people define great films versus enjoyable films. I am personally of the opinion that there is no consistent objective framework for determining the relative greatness of a work of art, and therefore "masterpiece" is a subjective categorization.

I think that going by the critical consensus, I'd add WALL-E to the list of sets based on masterpieces, and begrudgingly might throw The Dark Knight in there too.

By in Australia,

Home Alone was one of my favourite films growing up, so this must be a no brainer. Not sure if this needs to be that big though, thus increasing the price.

I LOVE this, but there’s so much to be fixed on this that I’ll be busy for a while!

Even with its flaws, as a Super Fan of both Home Alone & Home Alone 2, Lost In New York, it’s a travel 2 hours, wait in line, day one purchase for me!

I hope this era of "make every mediocre movie and sitcom into a Lego set" ends soon.

I hope TLG isn't shelving creative ideas from their designers in order to push out stuff like this.

It's an Ideas set, based on a...MOC.

Immediately reminded me of 4954. Wish Lego remake that set or just a regular town house with interior and as a creator expert set for around 2000 to 4000 pieces.

By in United Kingdom,

I’ve been waiting for this one and it’s so much better than I was expecting, home alone is one of my favourite movies. I’ve been having a bit of a rant about Lego lately but this looks spectacular. I think this might have to be Christmas present to myself!!!

By in Canada,

For some reason this set doesn't appeal to me. It looks plain from outside, and not that exciting from the inside. I guess I am not sufficiently obsessed with Home Alone.

But I like the precedent that TLC is willing to make a building with 4000 pieces from an Ideas set. Normally those are "too big" to be made into Ideas sets, so some amazing MOCs have been turned down. Maybe there is a better chance for them in the future.

3000pcs is still the cap for submitted projects. Once they’re in, however, the designers are free to change the size if they want.

Really? A set for one of that time periods most overrated movies? What's next a Twins based set with DeVito and Schwarzenegger.

Umm, I'd love Danny DeVito and Schwarzenegger minifigures! So there!

They could have matching tan suits. And I hope Arnie has a briefcase. Maybe some chains? Brilliant!

Cool set, but I need to stew on it for a while to see if it's lust at first sight or genuine, long-term love. Especially for $400!

@BigOnBricks:
There was a time when the top ten box office hits consisted of eight movies with George Lucas and/or Stephen Spielberg in the credits (first three SW films, first three IJ films, Jaws, and ET), plus 1989 Batman and Home Alone.

I must admit, the roof really appeals to me for a bit of 1960s nostalgia.... I might even have to change it to blue or red in honour of the Legoland sets I had!

The best part of a new LEGO set is often the dynamic comments made by everyone from absolute love to hate and critising everyone's opinion that doesn't align with their own inbetween. To that end I'm not stating an opinion on the set, but that I am enjoying the comments.....

By in Belgium,

When this set was approved last year through Ideas, I already decided this would be a must have.
And while the final result is beautiful to look at, I decided on passing.

The movie has many iconic scenes and lines but in my opinion, they tried to cram too much of it in the set. I also do think the colours are not the correct choice and the house has lost its dimensions by flattening it out. Some greens/gardens/... would also help tie everything together.

Nice design, good minifigures but not the set I was expecting it to be either.
