Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 19
Posted by CapnRex101,
Given the continuing chronology throughout this Advent Calendar, I am confident that Kings Cross Station will be our next stop. However, I also said that yesterday!
Perhaps we will reach the platform today...
Platform 9¾ has appeared in two previous sets focusing upon the Hogwarts Express, but this small design is arguably more detailed than either earlier structure! The architecture appears perfectly accurate when compared with the onscreen location, although its tan colour should probably have been darkened. Dark tan or medium nougat would have been ideal.
However, the highlight is inevitably the exclusive printed tile, identifying Platform 9¾ and the spectacular Hogwarts Express. Once again, this dark red board compares favourably with the source material, featuring metallic gold letters. I hope to encounter the element again whenever LEGO revisits Kings Cross Station.
Overall - 4.0 - Today's model looks excellent, but provides little play value and its colour deviates somewhat from the original location.

Some of the builds and figures in this calendar have left a lot to be desired for, but the prints have been excellent.
Was really hoping for some way of actually passing thru the wall, but hey ho.

That would probably require a lot of parts to pull off (like the one in 75955)
and they already did a similar feature earlier in the calendar.
I think I rather like this - it’s a significant build (for an AC, of course) that offers a small piece of recognizable environment to pose the included figures with, and features another great print! At least 4.5/5 in my opinion! :)
... I wish the weapons racks in the Star Wars AC more closely resembled this!
This is one of those models that I wouldn’t mind seeing on the box, just so you can see precisely how it should be built. I waffles between this look, and moving the sign up so it’s attached at the bottom. Ultimately, I’m convinced that the arrows point to the bottom of the sign, and the double-cheese is there to brace it from behind.

I think you are right, but doing so exposes part of the grey bricks underneath.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't;
if only they had used tan for the modified bricks as well...
@YanVanLan:
It bugged me, too, but I think if you look back through other sets, it’s something they have never paid attention to. Unless you hunch down to minifig eye-level, the sign obscures the off-color bits.
@PurpleDave :
Normally I understand that this sort of thing happens; a certain piece isn't available in a certain colour or is not in production at the right moment, etc.
But the BRICK 1X1, W/ 2 KNOBS, CORNER is a very common element in tan;
it's even available right now at PaB on SaH...
That's some nice SNOT work.
@YanVanLan:
And sometimes they pick contrasting colors so it’s easier to tell things apart. In cases like these, where the entire construction is being shown in a single step, it would certainly make it easier for the masses to (mostly) figure out how this should be built.
@PurpleDave:
Yes, that's probably the main reason here; in any case, not a big problem, I had some extra's in tan lying around so now I have some extra parts in grey ;-)
