Technic John Deere tractor revealed

Another European 2022 consumer catalogue has been discovered by RacingBrick in which a fourth Technic model due for release in March, 42136 John Deere 9620R 4WD Tractor, is depicted.

American agricultural machine manufacturer Deere & Company is a new licensor for LEGO, although it's produced many tractors in the past in the company's distinctive green livery.

It certainly looks more interesting to me than 42139 All-terrain Vehicle and the Control+ bloated 42140 App-controlled Transformation Vehicle that'll also be available that month.

I wonder if it comes with LEGO hackers who can help
me bypass the software that prevents me from using my tractor without paying absorbent amounts of money!

Nice rugged set that suits the Technic look so much better than supercars.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

What functions is this expected to have? I can see a knob for rear axle steering but nothing else is obvious except maybe a tipping bed on the trailer. The size almost looks like a good scale for City ... or maybe it's a Speed Champions scale tractor.

^^ *exorbitant amounts of money

This looks perfect for me, but I do have to agree that supporting/giving John Deere money is a little iffy.

Not so many reddit farmers here who could relate.

I was wondering when this would come up. Apparently in comment 1! I love a good John Deere historically and as a piece of farm culture. Too bad they are doing some strange choices around the issues you speak of.

My boys run the real ones with tracks. They probably want one.

Don't worry the right to repair a Lego set shall not require a certified John Deere technician!

Surprise, surprise .... it’s green.

It says: 4WD, which would be really cool for such a small vehicle. I do like it, and I wonder what 4WD could stand for otherwise?

Edit: maybe it does have four wheel drive, and the tractor is articulated.

Perfect small Technic Set by the Looks of it. First Day Order for me.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Oh, this is nice. The scale works well. Gonna build me a Battle Bay Fixer with those parts.

By in Netherlands,

Another licensed, form over function technic set. I miss the days when technic sets helped you understand how machines work, with all their functions on display. Give me another 8839 Fishing boat, please.

By in Netherlands,

At first I was unsure why the phrase "John Deere tractor" sounded so familiar to me a non farmer, but eventually I realised it comes from the song American Remains. So now I'm off listening to The Highwaymen for next couple of hours.

On the set: looks good

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Almost minifig size. LEGO could try a Citiy-Technic hybrid/transition line test run.

Looking forward to Huw‘s review of this :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Rather than paying for a license I would rather have a generic tractor with a crane to increase the functionality like 8049, which then allowed for a model B telehandler. Similarly, more complex builds would be great, e.g. an update of 42080 which seemed to be overlooked at the time.

By in Poland,

Another form over function technic set. What a waste of technic pieces. Head of technic design team should be replaced asap.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Finally, the Deere license is no longer the sole domain of Mega preschool toys! Definitely looking forward to this one. Hope this partnership continues with some yellow tractors, too (John Deere construction equipment).

And because this is Lego, you can hack and mod it all day, even use PoweredUp motors run through the Raspberry Pi Build Hat if you are so inclined.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Looks pretty good (not even too many stickers and most feel pretty optional), but considering the small size I wonder about functionality. I loved the tiny Claas because it absolutely maximized the functionality you can put in such a small set, this one is bigger so should offer more.

And something I imagine would be cool: use this set as a base and make several small and cheap (kids' pocket money cheap!) add-on sets with different tools that can be connected to the tractor. Gotta catch 'em all!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Ironic that a company that is all about rebuilding and creativity is associating with a company that is against right to repair etc.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Nice set, totally unnecessary licence imho.
I'm all for more tractors, but why can't they just be generic like they used to be in the past?
I highly doubt that there are so many John Deere fans who wouldn't have bought a generic green tractor without a licence.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really like this one. The smaller 2022 Technic sets are looking great, but I'm not so keen on the larger ones.

I wonder if we're allowed to rebuild it without John Deere's permission. Might have to send it in to be taken apart.

Well, this is a different company from Activision, Deere’s controversy doesn’t involve sexually harassing female employees and covering it up, and not as many people are likely as aware of as Activisions crimes (actual crimes, not bad business practices).

But I mean hey, point taken. Nobody is ever allowed to care about anything, and people ALSO aren’t allowed to care about ONE topic and not EVERY topic under the sun. Sensible position.

But if you care about ONE thing when there are others mistreated makes people hypocrites. John Deere did awful things to their employees. No one was complaining about LEGO being made in China when China treats people horribly and one of the top government officials raped a tennis star.

If LEGO didn't make sets because of sexual assaults or mistreatment of humans they wouldn't make any sets."

"China" is about 1.4 billion people. And I expect TLG will have relatively good working conditions for the Chinese employees.

By in Canada,

except for the technic gaps, this scales nicely, and could be used with minifigures (I think, anyways) in a City-type farm.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I mostly agree with the form over function complaints, but at least it looks nice. And what are some people complaining about John Deere for? I dont keep up to date on tractor news, so what have they done now?

Gravatar

I'm not sure I understand what went wrong with John Deere ? All I get in Google is news items about them going electric ?

In North America an articulated tractor is called a 4WD, a tractor with smaller front wheels compared to the back, if they are driven, is called a FWA = front wheel assist.

Well, I guess growing up on a farm and being a big John Deere fanboy as a kid I'll have to buy this. Lol

Gravatar
By in United States,

Don't give money to John Deere, they exploit farm laborers through the use of unnecessary DRM software to prevent equipment repair by anyone other than their licensed facilities.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

From all the "large" Technic set of 2022, I like this one. Interestingly, there are not that many functions available for a tractor. (1) Piston engine with drive train - this one seems too small for that; (2) steering - this seems to be an articulated tractor so steering is easily done - especially if there is no engine connected to the wheels; (3) power take-off (back and potentially front) - clearly none in the front but a back one is somewhat necessary - putting a trailer instead of agricultural equipment does not bode well; (4) hydraulic lift - does not need to be pneumatic but a mechanical system to raise equipment is necessary - again the trailer is not encouraging on that front. A backhoe on the other hand has tons of functions - do you remember 8455? The trailer can lift up but the two red parts indicate that this is most likely a two positions only setup: down and fully raised(by hand, not mechanically).

By in United States,

LOL at all the Redditors here repeating the same low-effort R2R references and getting sanctimonious on behalf of actual farmers (comme moi) because they read a few WSJ and Vice articles. Not that right to repair isn't an important issue, but Deere is far from the only farm mfr. who does that kind of thing. They're just the only company city slicker journalists and their audience can name off the top of their head. If this was a Case IH or New Holland, this comment section would be almost empty. Back on topic, though...

I'll definitely be buying this one regardless of any features it does or doesn't have. It'll be nice to buy an actual JD green & yellow set as a counterpart to the Claas, and as a companion to the 1/64 scale model from Ertl. JD did commission a number of building sets about 15 years ago through Ertl, who is well-known for making high-quality metal replicas, but their building sets, while compatible with LEGO, were the typical knockoff quality of the time.

There were historically some 4WD tractors that did not articulate (rigid frame), and the wheels could crab-steer, but I think the only one like that now is Claas. Similarly, row-crop tractors (those with large rear wheels and small fronts) used to have 2WD-only models, but FWA has become so popular in the past 30 years that 2WD is almost nonexistent once you get above ~150 engine HP.

Yes, you are right, forgot about that. I even have an old one in my yard just for fun, a 1965 case traction king 1200

That's exactly the one I was thinking of! I think Case kept the rigid frame design even into the first years of the Case-IH merger.

Yes they did. The last 2 models were the 9240 and 9260 in 1995.

By in Netherlands,

Again: did it HAVE to be licensed? I'm starting to wonder if the technic design team has companies standing in line to get their lego set made for them, instead of the design team getting the idea for a set and ask for a license contract.
At this point it's like lego's main business method is cross-promotion with as many companies as they can.

Sets like these feel like they are a model of the subject matter first, and toy second. And somewhere in there they try to make it a bit more of a technic set or something.

I miss the days when technic made affordable sets alongside the supercars and mobile cranes that still packed many functions.
Say what you want about the late 90s/early 2000s, but at least the technic assortment was varied at least!

By in United States,

We have a 2017 3038E and a 1996 5400 on the farm. 3038E is for yard and garden work, as well as light-duty work requiring a smallish tractor, like cleaning out the barn or mowing small fields. 5400 is the tractor of choice for running large implements like hay tools, mowing, and clearing large snowfalls. Both have loaders, and due to basically no such thing as level land on the property, are both MFWD/4x4 also. I can drive the 3038E much easier due to being hydrostatic drive, but I hate working on it. The 5400 MFWD is a manual transmission, but I'm figuring it out.

I do wish they'd make a Frontier trailer instead of the generic Deere-style one. Frontier is Deere's implement brand, and the green/gray vs. yellow/gray color scheme would look so much better.

I hate modern Deere. The 3038E is difficult to do even regular maintenance on, and since the local family-owned dealership was sold in 2015 and became a part of a large TN-based chain of dealerships, service is abysmal. The Kubota dealership is MUCH better, and still family owned. We should've gone with a BX series instead of this Deere disaster. We chose a Kubota RTV in 2006 instead of a Deere Gator and should've done the same with the tractors.

Seems like license won over functions . Far from the crab-steering prowess of the Claas Xerion. One thing in common though: the implement seems terrible :/
