LEGO teases The Batman Art set
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has just teased what is presumably a Batman Art set on social media, which suggests a full reveal is imminent.
Other sites are reporting that its set number is 31205 which we've actually had in the database since the end of 2020, so it's possible that its release has been delayed to coincide with that of The Batman film, which will finally hit the screens in March.
What are you hoping this Batman-themed Art set will depict?

Have the art portraits been successful? Should the existence of Batman give me any hope for additional Marvel portraits down the line? I sure would love a Captain America facing off against my Iron Man portrait but I just sort of assumed they weren't continuing with this line since I would've expected at least a Star Wars follow-up by now.
I thought the art portraits weren't doing well since they've seemed to be on permanent discount everywhere I've seen them. And as much as I love Batman, and Lego, these portraits aren't on my wish list.
I think that the art line does well enough. I would say that the Sith and iron man were hard to get ahold of even as they were going on sale. I think that with the popularity of Batman they will be able to do at least one round. Now the hard part is which Batman version do you go for?
I like that they appear to use the round plates not tiles.
Hope it has lots of black pieces, or very very dark grey :)
Sometimes I think about buying one of the Art sets, but then I quickly lose the interest in doing it... The sets from this theme are among the very few in a permanent state of discount here in Brazil though. (but doesn't mean they're cheap here, unlike other places)
I find it hard to gauge how well these sets are doing... Sure they're always on discount, so that's one clue... And the majority of big LEGO fans I chat to aren't keen on them, because compared with the majority of sets the build process is dull as anything.
But then, I feel as though the target market isn't even really existing LEGO fans as such...
There seem to be some cool custom designs coming out of them anyway
Who framed Batman?
Find out tomorrow!
Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel!
Psst!
Alfred did it. ;-)
I reckon a larger generic art set would be cool...
Containing hundreds of various colours of tiles, then a program where users could submit designs (like mosaic maker), then the program automatically generates the instructions for it
I'll certainly be tempted if it's classic TV based, or if that's one of the options. Otherwise, an easy miss.
Framed. In a portrait.
ha ha ha
My guess is that the Batman art will have multiple variations (similar to the Sith, Iron Man, or Harry Potter art sets), and that the variations will coincide with different iterations (1960's classic, Batman 89, the 90s animated series, the Dark Knight, and the new The Batman are all strong possibilities). Like the previous Art sets, I'd guess they'll be three or four variation instructions included.
Edit: I expect to see a lot of black, light/dark gray, yellow, and a few blue round tiles.

I’m sure @PurpleDave would agree with you. He absolutely loves that show :~P
Gentlemen, let's broaden our minds... Lawrence?
@Zander:
Are they making ‘66 toilet paper yet?
Seriously, though, I absolutely would buy an Adam West Batman shirt...if he was subbed in for the Mutant Leader in the mud pit fight from The Dark Knight Returns.
A super smash bros art set will be nice
I love these mosaic sets even though they aren't for everyone. It's really expensive to buy multiples though, so I'll probably wait for this to go on sale since I'm sure I'll love the big combo picture. Can't wait to see this!
I hope there are also lots of shades of grey, yellow, white etc to allow you to also experiment with your own black and white photos using one of the apps now available.
People hating on the art sets should try them. I found 31202 a very enjoyable and different building experience that required more focus than I expected. I enjoyed it so much I bought another copy and have them both hanging over the TV.
They're definitely not cheap, but if you're on the fence, I'd say try it.
Still waiting on a buildable giant minifigure like 76393.
I was on the fence about getting one, now I have combo ones to make the big pictures… you got me lego.. hahaha

Like other versions of Batman, also an easy pass!
Mr. Wayne: "why do you have a picture of a bat on your wall, Dr. Chase?"
Dr. Chase Meridian: "oh, that isn't a bat Mr. Wayne; it's a LEGO art set... the real question is, why do you think it's a bat?"
(Yep. The scene from Batman Forever still works.)
Oh, and as for who framed Batman: I vote George Clooney. He has good reasons for a vendetta against the Caped Crusader.
Look, I've done the triple-Sith picture, and while I wouldn't say the process was "fun," the end result more than made up for the time I put into it. (I also took Brickset's advice and tracked down the remaining spare parts to build an extra Maul picture.) It's not for everyone, but for those of us who've done it, it's far from awful.

I think the Caped Crusader has good reasons for a vendetta against Clooney. Or at least Joel Schumacher.
Very much hoping LEGO is making some non-Batman movie, comic book/cartoon-based sets this year. Last year there was barely any LEGO DC for me to buy.
I would be interested but not at the price Lego is selling them. Not even at the small discount available in Canada. At the Lego shop in Canada, these go for $120. Often times, you need 4 to do something decent. There is no way I would spend $480 +tx for a mosaic. I would consider it at cad$50. For $480 I can get a Mos Eisley Cantina or a Diagon Alley or a Lamborghini Sian or... you get the idea...
The one that interest me the most is the one where you can do a classic spaceman. At least, I believe for this one you need only one but then again this is $150 here - significantly too much.
@FuddRuckus I would also buy a classic spaceman done like 76393. Surprising how they have not done, Ironman, Batman, LLoyd and other characters in that format yet.
I love the ART theme and hope they keep them coming. Iron Man looks splendid on my wall and I'm excited to build both Mickey as well as the new Classic Spaceman. I'd also be interested in the Potter one(s) but would prefer a discount first as I agree that these are a bit pricey.
Another mosaic set? Meh!
Also, if its anything like the Bat Cowl, no friggin' way lol

Christopher Nolan
It's a shame it uses studs and not tiles.
I agree with many commenters that the price of the Art sets is a little prohibiting and this is what put me off until I saw 21226 half-off. Decided to go for it, because it seemed like a fun activity to do with the family over the holidays. And it really was very fun to build different sections and put them together at the end. None of us got bored, we had some entertainment on in the background and it was a very zen experience. I still have the spacelady (Jenny) on display.
Now that I own this set, I can obviously design anything I want at this scale (already built Hedwig too) by just purchasing the necessary round tiles/plates, which isn't very expensive at all. It rather surprises me that people are waiting for LEGO to come up with their favorite designs, when there are so many mosaic generators out there (there was even a LEGO one mentioned at Brickset recently). Just get the cheapest Art set and create your own designs!
The reason why they’re doing this set despite the poor sales of the other portraits is because it was supposed to come out last year before they delayed the film.

They do seem to be on discount. I’ve got a couple. I didn’t enjoy building them very much (except the spaceman one), but I’ve really gotten to like the parts and making my own mosaic designs.
I have three of the Art sets for the large combined Darth Vader; it looks awesome.
It was also a lot of fun to do and a very different building experience from a normal set or MOC, more in line with having some music on and sitting back and chilling. I didn't rush through them and it was quite relaxing really. I certainly didn't buy them at full price.
I want Nolan's Batman, definitely the standout for me (but pretty sure it will be Reeves). I hope they make another combined large image, like DV.
Blacks, blues, reds and yellows should be plenty for a full page of zaps!, booms! and kepows! Job done.
LEGO has some alternate builds for a few of these types of sets right now, at the ViP rewards page. There is a Hedwig and snitch for example using the HP crest pieces. Best of all, 0 points each.
Though I haven’t purchased any of these, I would imagine this series will last almost indefinitely. The R&D is non-existent and there certainly are no new pieces to build.
If they ever did a Captain America one, I’d be in. I was close on Iron Man.
Shit, this is gonna be one of those ones you need to buy three of isnt it...
Nathan Sawaya's DC spin-off to his 'Art of the Brick' exhibition had a piece that was really cool (and if it could be duplicated on a smaller scale...): it was a two-way mosaic where one looked at it one way they would see Batman. Looking at from the opposite refracted angle, one would see The Joker. It was very well done.
@brick_r :
I wonder if he got the idea from Gugick’s lenticular mosaic. Chris Doyle actually pioneered the cheese wedge lenticular technique, but the late Arthur Gugick was one of the people who really ran with it. He did a giant mosaic of Anakin (from Ep2 or the early Ep3) and Darth Vader, and the second one he wanted to work on was Batman. I think he asked my advice on it at Brickworld Fort Wayne one of the few times we met in person, because he wasn’t sure who the other view should be, and I told him Joker was the only logical option there.
I'm a huge fan and have all the sets that make each individual art and the combined also. Cost me a small fortune, but have always picked up at discounts.
Bat signal / Bat mask / Batarang???
