Images of two more City train sets have emerged overnight, 60337 Passenger Express Train and 60335 Train station which, along with 60336 Freight Train, will be released on June 1st.

The passenger train consists of a streamlined bullet-train-like traction unit and two coaches. A circle of track and miniscule platform are also included.

You will therefore also need the more substantial 60335 which provides a longer platform, a bus, level crossing and a 'toilet train' -- take a look at the pictures after the break to find out more!

My thoughts exactly

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

really liking that unimog on the tracks ngl.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I love that the train station comes with a level crossing that integrates with the new road plates, and some extra plant machinery! I already BrickLinked parts for my own station and crossing, but I think I'll be able to combine them. I really like this station. Probably swap out the teal for dark azure so I can use the teal bricks for other builds. (e: Not entirely sure if those Cafe and Tickets signs are opaque/clear stickers, or prints... will have to revisit this, or use 853921 like I was going to)

The passenger train has:
• Lights
• Doors
• Longer cars/train bases
• Brick-built nose
• Longer track (4 more straight tracks)
• More minifigures
• Nearly 100 more pieces in total

I won't be getting the train since I already have 60197 but I'm really concerned about the price tag.

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

That small platform in passenger train have same height and color as that on the station, it should be easy to just attach it at the right side of the station and extend platform length

Gravatar
By in Jersey,

The design is good. The colours are terrible.

In Europe the train will be EUR 150. EUR 20 more than 60197 but it has 100 pieces more and includes lights. The cars are also 32 studs long - a big plus versus the previous train which required modding with its 24 stud cars.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Looks good. Talk about “mind the gap” though!!!

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

The new train looks good, there are working doors so it seems the TLG is listening. However train sation is pretty simpley as all the buildings recently. Honeytly it is not even a train station just the facade of a train station. I would prefer a serious building without vehicles. It would much more wise to sell a well designed buliding and separately a vehicle pack. That would be extra money for TLG.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Both sets look really good. I like the light sphere it has. Very now. Will fit perfect with the supermarket and to build a suburb for the city lay-out people.

Thanks. In Singapore 60197 and 60198 had an inexplicably small price gap of just $50 ($250 vs $300), and I've never been sure if one was overpriced or the other was a good deal. Hopefully 60337 isn't that far off here either. It addresses basically every issue people had with 60197. It offers so much more.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It looks like the platforms can be combined, which is a nice touch.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

That train is so much better than the recent City trains! Brick built nose (just like the freight train), doors, lights, almost all "colour branding" is brick built as opposed to being stickered... The bus looks great too.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

The fact that they're doing a train station again after like a decade is really cool

I don't think it looks that good but it's still cool

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the passenger train, with definite overtones of the Horizon Express (will need 2 of course). It does emphasise how much Lego needs to produce a larger radius curved track though... a train with such a long nose looks really odd going around such a tight curve!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Love the train, trainstation not so much, looks too similar to other city houses. It doesn't scream out ''train station''. Like compare the station to this set 60291-1 and it's soooo similar.

Gravatar
By in Hong Kong,

Train looks good! Love the high speed train look and brick-built nose. The doors located at the midpoint of the carriages look a bit weird though; makes it look more like a city tram. Colours are..hmm....okay I guess. I preferred the Eurostar-ish colours of 60197 very much. Agree that it would nice to be able to buy separate train head and carriages again. Not too sure about the train station yet. We get plenty of superfluous vehicles again!.

60154? I'm torn because I actually prefer its proportions but I adore the color scheme of dark azure body and flame yellowish orange seats from this one (which wouldn't go well with yellow and green). I don't particularly understand the inclusion of a bus with this train station, especially when there isn't even a bus stop to go with it. I'd much rather have seen its parts go into the station itself. But... flame yellowish orange seats!

and that's why the platforms have to be so far from the train too I suppose.

2 wide glass doors though!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Opening doors on City Trains? - Wow, who would have thought it? - not keen on the colour scheme though.

Station looks nice, and I like that they have included the level crossing, road plate and the re-railer tracks at the ends (a great help for kids to get trains onto the track)

Gravatar
By in Australia,

That train looks absolutely hideous. Love the blue bus though.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Well I've always wanted a track maintenance vehicle so happy with that.

What the hell is with the port a loo though?? Lego you are not selling to 4 year olds you don't need to have toilets and poo in everything. Also that port a loo is ridiculously oversimple and boring. Just straight 4x8 blue plates with no even a logo on them? Really lego?

The bus is nice, nothing amazing but good. I'll convert it to an old bus somehow but can't say I have any complaints about it.

The level crossing is really good, great to finally get one in an official set that isn't a train (the last separate one was in 2010). Not sure why the boom gates had to be so short though.

But the station, rather as I expected, is an absolute let down. It's not even as substantial as I expected. The 2018 one was sooo much better. This is literally a BP service centre with a platform in front, no a BP service centre facade. It's literally a bunch of boxes made out of panels.

Surely we could have got a roof made out of sideways rollercoaster track pieces or a proper building like in 2018. This appears to have a control area (forget the name) and then just a wannabe cafe. Very lazy effort by Lego (especially compared to set 7997 for example).

I must admit, the doors are my least favourite part of the set... look more suited to a patio than a train! Easily changed though.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Gravatar
By in France,

Finally a station !!
.... but a little expensive this station for the weakness of its content, especially due to the addition of a bus and a toilet on the rail ??..

- Are you traveling first class?
- No, I'm testing a new innovative concept, the Water Class (WC) for incontinent seniors ??.

re.60337
The guy in the wheelchair gets up the ramp onto the platform, sees the train has wide enough doors, notes the need for the platform gap (pace legoalbert, above), looks for station staff with a wheelchair access ramp... so close.
It's very tempting. I don't need platforms or minifigs, but it's not too much extraneous (ex-train-eous?) stuff in this set. It's almost as if it is a playset for kids, or something.
I, too, would love a return to the "My Own Train" approach with separate coaches/cars, locos, etc.: I like the RRV and trailer on 60335 but am not going to get a whole big set just for that (there was a similar vehicle as a stand- alone back a few years, I think).
Remember the Silver Santa Fe train with the optional builds? I wish I'd got more than the loco and two cars at the time- but it was expensive back then, in the Olden Days.
Second radius tracks? There are compatible ones out there, so Lego is absolved of the responsibility and the need to produce shelf hoggers.

The Level Crossing gates are short so that if a car is crossing track and gates come down, they have an escape route.

Well where else are train track repair-workers supposed to do their business, the bushes?
https://www.progressiverailroading.com/productoftheweek/details.aspx?id=16849

No I am honestly quite excited to have the porta-potty included, since its one of the most realistic train details Lego has done in a while. Whenever large M.O.W. crews tend to be out working on the line with their tampers and spike machines and tie trains, its not uncommon to have one or two speeders or hi-railers hauling a porta-potty with them. Just a mobile toilet that follows the track crew around.

By in Canada,

Every tastes are in the nature: like the station, don't like the station, like the train, don't like the train...

Personally, I like the station (facade, because there isn't much of a station compared to 4554/2150). I also like the bus and service vehicle. The portable toilet was neat when it was first used, now the novelty is gone - no need to put it everywhere - it shows lack of imagination - or one trick pony. Also not quite sure about those track ramps(2) two expensive parts for nothing really.

As for the train, I am not a big fan of those incredibly long noses (until they figure out a way to put the wheel much further forward) it looks stupid/ridiculous/you-name-it in the curves. For those who don't like the colour scheme, you are quite limited, part 49618 (the big triangle in the front of the engine) only comes in red and white (and now in lime). Whatever happened to the pantograph part(2881/2922)? Has it been discontinued? Not a fan of those doors at all - looks incredibly weird. Sets 164, 7815, 7818, 7819 and 7820 all had their doors on the main floor and it was just fine. If they want to use those bottom parts, they have to do a double decker 4547. Anyway, at least some people seems to be happy with that... Maybe it's time to buy the old sets before they retire.

Edit: part 49618 will also be available in green from the upcoming market 60347.

By in Germany,

Passenger train looks great, never thought I'd see lights and opening doors in a train set again, brings back Horizon Express memories, but that train station is crap, which is in theme with it's mobile toilet. Why not make a proper train station and separate track maintenance and bus sets? Thank goodness we still have Studgate even if for a hefty sum.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really like the road to track plate so the vehicle can drive right onto the tracks. That is nifty addition!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really want to like the train, but it looks like they ran out of pieces when they got to the top.

Gravatar
By in United States,

While I'm not a fan of the green accents that have shown up in police, fire, hospital, and other sets; I do like the train station and vehicles.

Two thumbs down on the passenger train. It might have a few nice features but overall it is unoriginal. ??

Gravatar

too bad for that lime color, it looks very... ugh

Gravatar
By in United States,

Conclusion:
I need a second job. Seems like this year the output from TLG is through the brick. Dunno how I am going to buy everything I want in 2022 when I haven’t caught up from 2020-2021 yet.

First World problems…

Love the train, color is vibrant and striking. It terminates kind of suddenly, like it just exited a Fringe event, but if that’s how it looks IRL then that’s how it looks.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm not intending to buy any trains (I don't have space for a track layout) but I really like the station. While I definitely appreciate old railway architecture, I like the modern, colourful station they're doing here. The wall art is cool and the colour scheme feels fresh. The road/rail maintenance vehicle looks like it will be great for play, and I think inclusion of the bus makes sense as well so passengers can get to the station without needing a car.

I'm tempted to get the station even without having a train...

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

LEGO City is making a great comeback to the center stage, it seems they got the memo that they need to do less sets based on fire and police and more sets to supplement those two areas.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Train is nice, I think it'll become a "modern classic" 10-15 years down the road. Unlike 60197.
Station is better than I expected to be honest. I was sure we'll get a silly +4 set, but it's not bad.

I think my biggest gripe is that most Lego City passenger trains in the last 15 (?) years have all focused on generally European styled fast electric ones. While that is certainly "close to home" for Lego's designers and portrays a very slick modern look; I feel like City would benefit from some more variety in passenger influences. A diesel hauled passenger train, or even a steam one if they went old school would certainly spice things up. Or even if sticking to European electrics go for a blocky older one and not the more modern high speed stuff.

Its been a long time since we last really saw an American passenger train that wasn't some "Wild West" one for example. A return to the Santa Fe Super Chief F/E Unit with streamlined cars style would be neat.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Where I live the bus IS the train, only they call it Rail Replacement Service! I do like that station set tho'

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not a fan of the train, the build looks like early 2000's style to me for some reason. I'm going to get one more set of the current passenger train before it retires.

The station is cute, but very small. I wish the bus was a separate set so they could spend that budget on making the actual station a little bigger/deeper. It's a very nice bus, but I don't think it belongs in a train station set. Will probably still buy it, though. I would have even bought the bus separately, too.

It terminates much less suddenly once a 2nd reversed one is added, as I have a feeling it will be in most cases!

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Beatiful train, I really want it. Even more because it reminds me so much of 4511 too, a dream set from when I was a kid, but my parents couldn't afford it. This time I might finally have the chance to own a train set.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The freight train was good but not an improvement over it's predecessor, but this passenger train surely is! Love that it's brick built, not overly reliant on stickers, has doors (well, to bad for the train driver...), and even lights! Unfortunately still just half a train again, but a three car train with two such end cars wouldn't have worked either. as a set And I bet this looks awesome with two sets coupled together!

Station set looks pretty good too, and you just gotta love that "toilet train" :-)

Or they could have simply accepted the ideas submission of the ViaRail Canadian Rocky Mountain train - which reached the required 10000 votes, was incredibly nicely designed and had lots of play value without much side buildings.

I'll have to check if that train can be built with currently available parts (or if unfortunately some recolours were necessary).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Happy to see more trains but I do wish the front of the engine was shorter. The overhang in front of the trucks on short radius tracks will look awkward. Also I too could do without the bus. More maintenance of way equipment or added station would be preferred. I’m sure I’ll buy the set regardless of my quibbles!

60337 Passenger Train:

GOOD
- Love seeing doors on the passenger cars
- Good minifigures

BAD
- Engine looks terrible
- late 90s/early 2000s LEGO vibe - with that choice of green and that brick built schnoz.

VERDICT
- Don't see it has an improvement over the last one. Pass reluctantly.

60335 Train Station:

GOOD:
Great Bus
Cool Hi-Rail Truck
Great Minifigs

CONS:
Plain build (compared to the last station)
Not lovin' (but not hatin') the colours
Not sure about that second floor. Not sure what it is.

VERDICT:
Not bad, great details. I may swap out the teal for red. Probable Buy.

By in Ireland,

It's amazing that Lego, while releasing ~500 sets per year, still can't allocate more than 3 'slots' every 4 years to train sets. This station set should have been released as two sets; one with station + bus, one with level crossing and maintenance crew.

While I'm not immediately sold on the colour scheme I certainly do like that they've done away with the enormous single-mold nose.

Lego has designers from all over the world so that doesn't explain the focus on European trains. Maybe the problem is that Lego wants City trains to look modern, and America just doesn't have much to offer in modern (passenger) train design.

Gravatar
By in Jersey,

And moreover, high-speed trains tend to look the same everywhere.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I just find the front train too long, the battery box only needs 8 studs not 16 leaving lots of empty space. If they created a short train base plate, then the extra 8 long bricks could have been used for an additional reverse train car which would make it look more symmetric and match the tram like carriages better.

I like the train station with the curved roof on the box art more than the 'hospital on a platform look', and miss the days of double platforms with a footbridge which created the feel of a station rather than a platform.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If you don't like this train station, you'd better hope it sells well so they'll see there IS demand for a train station (and possibly other train accessories) so that we don't have to wait another decade before they make another one.

Fat chance of that happening. They have neglected rolling stock for years and will continue to do so, the market just won't support it and this is coming from an avid LEGO train owner who has wished for this since the My Own Train days and the old 2126 Train Cars kit from the 90's.

Possibly. The door part choice looks bad.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I find 60337 better than 60197 . Brick-built front rather than bespoke pieces, at least to the same extent as the Horizon Express 10233 . Great that a person in a wheelchair can board the train, and that the train has doors.
Variable-length well-wagon plates could be useful, albeit with limited bogie space at each end. Studs on the roof - you win some, but the reduced parts from that, compared to using many curved slopes, allows more parts elsewhere.
Same Powered-Up electric pieces, handset, City hub and motor. I find these the best combination for powering many types of models, including New Monorail. I prefer them to the Technic hub until I can get that to work with the handset using 3rd-party software.
What about the wheels though? Would they not be the new plastic-only individual ones, mounted separately from each other in the wheel bearing piece? Those may limit train weight, when considering their use in MOCs at a larger scale.

Station 60335 looks like a good play set. The Unimog provides what would have needed another set otherwise, so we get more train functions for the same set count. The track worker's helmet is yellow for a change. The vehicle has a cherry-picker but the Overhead Line Equipment is invisible! Just as well for child safety :D
The toilet truck can be added to 60337 so the passenger train gains an outside loo! The toilet is not a lift-off roof one like the one in 60216 . That leaves out a bit of reality from some UK trains, where comedians have described the slow opening of the toilet door as they are enthroned!
Hope the bus is not a rail-replacement bus or this might be the most real part of LEGO trains. Unfortunately there is the reality that TLG will support play for children but not the model railway hobby that AFOLs would like. For many of us it means that purchasing these sets comes down to their qualities as parts packs for MOCs. The re-railing pieces are useful, either for a fiddle yard or for the inevitable child's play derailments, but I hope that's not another hint of the derailment of LEGO trains!
The bus could be built in mirror-image for countries where we drive on the left, but the UK would be allied with France in disliking "center" as the spelling on its destination sticker.
The colourful frieze composed of 2x2 diagonal tiles is a nice touch, more artistic and expandable and a great way to avoid using more stickers.
The tree is squeezed-in and makes a break between the road and the platform. A real railway would have Buddleia in its place, perhaps of similar height! For those I use bamboo leaves and a purple cone for the flower head.
I like the SNOT canopy and roof better than transparent plates.
Expansion is facilitated by the platform being extendable if a second one were built in mirror image. There is no bridge, nor a walkway across the level crossing, but those would be needed only if multiple sets were used in double-track formation. The level crossing barrier support covers the middle of the road so the barriers would need to be shortened or offset with jumpers if 2 or more sets expanded the crossing to 4 barriers.
The colour balance looks good, overall turned up from reality but that is quite normal for toys.

continued...

By in United Kingdom,

part 2...

There are no lineside signals in the new train sets but as ERTMS (in-cab-signalling) is now widespread in continental Europe, the real-life trend is away from having them. A single-aspect version of the LED matrix brick in Spike Essentials set 45345 would have been the best way to make single-aspect multi-coloured searchlight signals, albeit that the brick is a serial device and I hate phone-dependency in LEGO electrical systems.

As an aside, the Powered-Up train motor works in speed control mode from the City hub, where other motors work in on-off (simple motor) mode. That is down to the motor's ID, set by pins 5 and 6. It is possible to fake the ID of another motor and make it look like a train motor in order to get it to use speed control. I did some experiments using the 51515 distance sensor, where the front can be removed and connections can be made. From others' dismantling of motors we see that both motor types already have ID pin 6 grounded to pin 3 (Gnd). Without opening the motor casing, the change from simple motor mode to train motor mode would be made by using insulation-displacement pins to make a short-circuit between ID pin 5 and pin 4 (+V). For simple motors, pin 5 is already connected to ground by a 2k2 resistor inside the motor unit so pulling it up to +V is possible but will draw 4.1mA from the supply; just disconnect the motor from the hub when not in use, to avoid draining the batteries. Of course I would prefer it if TLG made an extension lead for PU, which would be less-risky to hack, but that is also beyond the limits of the product offering. I hope this tip helps those who build MOC trains with other motor types, enabling you to achieve speed control.

This time the passenger train is a bit better than the goods train 60336 . Whilst the passenger train 60337 has had ~100 bricks added (compared to 60197 ) for an extra £10, the goods train appears to have less content for the same price as 60198 . The limit on usefulness for AFOLs may be offset slightly by the expected occasional 33% discount for those who wait. If you need to guarantee getting the current wheelsets, get 60198 while you can; discounts should reach £120 (from £180) again soon.

As toy train sets with play value, both the passenger train 60337 and the station 60335 do the job well and should be winners for TLG. I'll probably wait and buy a couple of each on discount.
