Rolling Stones Art set revealed!
Posted by Huw,
A German retailer has revealed the next addition to the Art theme. However, 31206 Rolling Stones is quite different to earlier sets, as you can see. It's not square and looks to be 4 or 5 plates deep, so has a slight 3D appearance.
It contains 1998 parts and will cost about €130 in Germany.
I won't get no satisfaction from it, what about you?

Interesting diversion from the standard ART style. Wonder if other logos will get this treatment in the future
But.. why Rolling Stones?
It looks really well-made, but definitely not for me. Seems like a pretty niche market lego's chasing with this one.
Not wat I expected. But it's not just thousands of 1x1s, so it's definitely an improvement I guess.
But ehm... how many people want a giant Rolling Stones logo, brick-built or otherwise?
Here's hoping it has a wall hanger slot at least.
You're gonna have to "gimme shelter" from all the incoming bad puns, otherwise it may cause my "19th Nervous breakdown"!
Looks like it's not designed to have multiple picture options, unlike the mosaic Arts sets. That's a shame - the rebuildability into different pictures is what makes the mosaics worth the money when compared to much less expensive posters of the same images to hang on the wall. I hope somebody rebuilds this into --- help me out, what's another rock band known for a mostly red/black/white logo?
But why? I don't see this selling too well

Dead Kennedys?
That one was pretty predictable.
Thank you for your purchase of LEGO 31206.

Why? Because "It's only Rock and Roll (but I like it)"!
Ol Mick will do anything for a few more bucks. I'm sure his next girlfriend will be just old enough to put it together for him
An interesting product.
This is one of the few that actually looks pretty unique.
I still wish LEGO would use this music partnership for actual band-related sets. Not Vidyo, not Art. Actual minifigures.
@Huw the retail price is €149,99 according to the German Site (UVP = retail price), the €127,49 on the site are already with a discount of 15% included.
The set looks interesting, but I'm definitely not in the targeted costumer group.
Next please do a smash bro’s logo

Probably because they're one of the most popular bands of all time worldwide.
Well I doubt that it will comply with their song "No Spare Parts".
But do the bricks (roughly translated Stones from dutch or german Steentjes/Steine), roll ?
Creatively bankrupt nostalgia/license abuse, pass.
Sorry for those of you who aren't into this. I guess you can't always get what you want.
Didn't even look like LEGO by the small image, which for a mosaic I guess is actually a good thing
Is this sympathy for the devil?
Could probably rebuild it into an American Idiot logo. Sweet.
You asked for goats.... You got goat's head soup....
(Although they might not have got away with that album cover as a Lego mosaic!)
It is a pretty iconic logo, as much a symbol of the times as of the band.
Not for me though. I'd take an ACDC one, however!
I think it's a really interesting use of the various tile shapes, but some of the edges look like a bad vector trace job.
A definite day 1 purchase.... My only worry is that it won't look quite so good when the teeth inevitably yellow!

Run-DMC?
My favorite part of every music related set reveal or announcement is all of the people confused as to why Lego would produce a set depicting an incredibly famous and commercially viable band or artist. Every time. Without fail.
Not for me but it looks excellent!

Plus they are on European tour starting in June. Wouldn’t be surprised to see this set sold on concerts as a merchandise as well.
I actually really like the texturing here. It adds a lot of depth to it. I have yet to purchase an art mosaic (and I still won't buy this one), but this is something more of what I'd want than just a random face of band members. At least a logo can be displayed in more places (in my opinion).
And as much as I like the Stones. I don't need their logo on my wall.
Start me up - I find it fascinating and so different. Would love to build it, but maybe not own it.
KISS were my thing.. would love to see those 1978 Solo album covers done LEGO style.
Not a fan of the Stones nor the Art sets, but this looks pretty darn cool!

Exactly! The red and white are done exceptionally well (quite surprised actually!) But the black is extremely jagged and distract quite a bit. I think, it might have been better to make the black slightly wider outside the red but making sure the black line is 'a little bit more/quite a bit more' uniform.
Not for me but I can see the appeal - if people are interested in brickheadz of the Spice Girls or 4/6 times a mosaic of the Beattles/Elvis, why not this?
The more I look at it, the more this jagged black (especially at the top - going from very thin to very thick) annoys me. To each his own...

I think it will look fine as normally viewed.
i.e. from a distance, and not against a contrasting, brilliant white background.
For those wondering who this is for: I have seen this logo painted, very large, on a garage door. So it's for those people.
This is high up the list of "iconic logos people would wear without knowing which band it's from". Very pop-art, too. Next logical step would be the Pink Floyd album cover with the rainbow prism, or Daft Punk.
This set is not for me, and to nitpick, the site is dutch, not german
Either you need it or not, it's a 0/1 type of a set.

Not another rock band, but the Rocky Horror lips are an obvious alternative!
Pretty novel compared to the existing ART theme.. I like it.

2 websites are mentioned , the news was reported by Dutch LEGO news site Bouwsteentjes that German Retailer taschengelddieb.de revealed pre orders on this set.
But yes, the set is listed as €150 full price not €130 because the retailer gives a 15% off on it.
Would’ve preferred the classic Art frame to be included. Besides I’m more of a Beatles person unfortunately .
To be honest, at a glance it just kinda looks like a poorly drawn knock-off version of the actual logo. You'd be better off just getting a print of the actual logo framed. You'd probably save quite a bit of money doing that too.
Sure, it's LEGO and it's a build experience but I can't imagine it being a particularly rewarding one so at the end of the day you just end up paying a lot more for a much worse end result and you won't even have that good of a time assembling it.

Love chocolate. Love Peanut Butter. You know what’s weird? I rarely if ever put chocolate in peanut butter on my own. Someone made a product that (sorta, kinda) blends the two. But it’s kind of the simplest solution, not quite high end, not quite what I would REALLY want as a fan of both. I sorta, kinda like Reeces Cups…not enough to really buy them.
Love The Rolling Stones. Love LEGO. You know what’s weird? I would never have thought to make something like this on my own. LEGO made a product that (sorta, kinda) blends the two. But it’s kind of the simplest solution, not quite high end, not quite what I would REALLY want as a fan of both. I sorta, kinda like this thing…not enough to really buy it.
That being said, had they done something like the Beatles Ideas set (which probably would not have sold well) I’d have bought THAT! :)
Both the Rolling Stones and the Beatles are overrated- turns out they made LEGO sets of both
I'm not a big enough Stones fan - or a big enough fan of putting large band art on my walls - to want this, but I'm a little surprised at all the comments wondering how Lego is going to sell many of these. The Stones are a huge band, incredibly popular across multiple generations (including tons of middle-aged and older adults who also grew up with Lego), and their logo is an iconic piece of pop-art in addition to being a very recognizable logo for the band itself.
I don't pretend to know exactly how well this will sell, but I think folks are way underestimating how popular this will be. I also think it's a very cool set and design, even though personally it's not for me.

Overrated enough to sell half a billion records between them and *still* be selling those records after 50 years. Yeah. They're rubbish...
As for the set itself, it's an okay rendition of the logo, but as pointed out by others there are plenty of easier and cheaper ways to get a better-looking result.
Next in the series ... Prince's unpronounceable "symbol"? The classic ELO "spaceship"? Pink Floyd's DSOTM "prism"? Or just some completely illegible death metal gore-font monstrosity?
I could go for the death metal. Interesting SNOT, I should imagine...
This looks like a scaled up version of the Brick Sketches. It would not surprise me to find out Chris McVeigh is the designer.
I like that Lego is branching out and testing lots of different ideas to appeal to adult fans. Isn't this what AFOLs have wanted?
I don't know if I have a place for it on my walls, but I think it is a cool set!
@PixelTheDragon : You get people who think their tastes speak for the entire community in every fandom.
I bleeping hate this logo. It just rubs me the wrong way. It's right up there with Home Alone on the list of "Things I never want to see".
Too many Lego Display sets these days. Not enough Play sets.
Regardless of subject and medium, I consider a giant tongue and lips to be a rather unsettling wall ornament. :P Cool for Rolling Stones fans though!
This stuff is a complete waste. I see the art sets with clearance stickers still collecting dust on shelves. You have multiple third party and knock-off companies servicing the actual adult Lego audience and the company itself burns money on Spencer’s Gifts-level junk. Pathetic.

It's Lego's fault. Every box should include a large disclaimer stating,
"Warning - Purchase of this set is not compulsary",
as many don't seem to realise.
Personally I find the balance between sets I want, and sets I have no interest in is just about perfect, to allow a bit of spare cash for trivia like food and heating!
I'm a Beatles fan, but I must say I'm glad Lego decided to go with the lips and not a mosaic of Keith Richards, had they done that kids would scream in horror whenever they saw Legos. I'm pretty sure that it was the job of the make up artists on Pirates of the Caribbean to make him look less scary and give him a more sensible wardrobe.
Now I really wish that Lego could recreate the Giger gatefold on ELP's Brain Salad Surgery.
I think Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon logo would have a better impact
@ElephantKnight said:

Of course. Lego never make play sets - except Duplo. And Classic. And City, Ninjago, Monkie Kid, Friends, DC, Marvel, Jurassic World, Creator, Mario…
Anyway, overreactions aside, I’m not a massive Stones fan, but think this looks great, and it’s pretty impressive how they managed to capture the curves and lines.
Can't believe no one else is just impressed that all those shapes are fully brick built.
The outline makes it look sloppy, not finished.
Need to make it against just a big black square or tall rectangle/frame.
The lower right will have a big black blank section when you do this but fill it with a larger Rolling Stones signature tile.

Run-DMC?"
Or a non-rock band related Ghostbusters logo.
They should do Pink Floyd's The Wall, KISS logo, The Who with that Royal Air Force circle logo, and a mosaic with Iron Maiden's Eddie.
Reminds me a little of the 1st generation Brick Sketches., but bigger. Although...wait. There are 3x3 macaroni tiles now? is that a new part?

I'm glad it's the lips because it was mainly the fact that you really needed 4 copies that stopped me getting the Beatles. I don't mind extra copies to enhance a display, like Marilyn, Elvis, Mickey Mouse, Harry Potter, but I'm not keen when they're pretty much essential.
The dimpled tongue probably looks great at a distance in an art museum. Those two white pac-man circles on the upper lip look like eyes to me in a weird alien way.

Related as LEGO being playing stones?
I don't even listen to rolling stones music, but thos is (pardon my french) f***ing awesome. Definitely a buy
it's ok but not for me, too like the brick sketches and not enough like the existing art sets.. i.e. missing the frame/border etc, for me not interested in the subject matter but if was I likely would want to mount it on similar frame as the other ones.

For pixel art mosaics I can see a point and they look great on the wall due to the frame, but who wants semi-proportional, scewed logos too? Imagine if Apple contracted TLG and it looked jaggy like this one does.
