Forest Hideout

©2022 LEGO Group

A brand store in China has provided us with the first glimpse of a forthcoming gift with purchase.

40567 Forest Hideout plays homage to 6054 Forestmen's Hideout from the beloved Forestmen Castle subtheme.

It looks to be a faithful reproduction which has leveraged the new parts and techniques that have become available since the original was introduced during 1988. It has more pieces than the old version and two minifigures, one of whom appears to be female.

It'll be available from June 15-30th in China so may well be obtainable at LEGO.com elsewhere during that period as well. As soon as we find out the full details we'll let you know.

They’re doing the old boxes too!!

No large pine tree. Did it get grafted onto the main build? Those leaves could've just grown over the last 30+ years. Did the large pine tree die?

Looks absolutely incredible, maintains the classic style but intelligently makes use of new parts in a similar manner to Barracuda Bay and Benny’s Space Squad

Currently not in production I suppose, last time was 40310 : Botanical Accessories up to somewhere 2020.

By in Netherlands,

Looks fantastic.

Surprised those current spear parts (flat end) have not been made in the reddish brown, ever.

And the older spear (round end) only was made in reddish brown once in a CMF : 71002-5 : Island Warrior

By in United States,

That was my favorite set as a kid. So excited for this!

Gravatar
By in Bulgaria,

I dislike the abrupt size change in the middle of the upper tree branch. Very jarring and un-treelike. Loved this set as a kid though so still sorely tempted to get this one too.

By in United States,

Have an unopened 6054 that my spouse bought back in '89. It's worth so much it didn't feel right to open it.

Now I can get a reasonable facsimile.

I think Lego should do modern updates of many old sets. I've done modest upgrades myself and even my low skill levels make a huge difference.

I love this set and will definitely be purchasing enough to get multiple sets.

By in United States,

I must have it!

By in United States,

Mmmm black tree trunks. Nostalgia to the max.

This looks like a nice recreation of that old set. I will definitely want it, but can imagine the limit will be even higher than the last few just because they know nostalgia will earn them some money.

I guess I'll wait to do some ordering until end of June to hopefully capture this.

Only missing the hanging vines. Could have put green whip pieces in the foliage pieces' holes.

By in Serbia,

It's beautiful. However, I'm super frustrated for this being a GWP. Given I'm saving for the upcoming anniversary Castle and Galaxy Explorer sets, I fear I'll need to pass on this.

I kind of feel cheated by Lego for doing this cheesy promo way before they release those 90 years sets, thus not rewarding AFOLs that will be paying ludicrous price of $350 for the Lion King's (Queen's) Castle.

I gotta think Lego won't need to offer extra incentives in order to sell the upcoming castle set... The whole point of GWPs is to get us to buy more, not to reward us for buying stuff we were going to buy anyways.

It also seems a little premature to be complaining about the price of a set that we haven't even seen yet.

Gravatar

Awesome!! I always wanted and never got this the first time around, but a friend had it. I would love to get this, and have Forestmen come back in general...

Hard to determine with the blurry pic, but that possible female minifig may just be a male with long hair. Kinda looks like it has facial hair or long sideburns.

I'm expecting another GWP with the Castle. That set not having a GWP will be more annoying than this additional GWP set.

Wait, so this won’t be out at the same time as the Castle?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes, I love Forestmen.
Yes, this is really neat.
I do wish they'd done this with the 6066 Camouflaged Outpost, though.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

That typography "Forst Hideout" looks all wrong ... wrong color, definitely wrong typeface, no capital letters, wrong category of content (theme vs. name) ... very uncanny valley between "we want to be retro" and "we don't really really care".

The model ... oh well, maybe if it comes with the castle. i won't buy another set from lego directly just for this.

Gravatar
By in Chad,

Awesome news!
Pleasantly surprised! Tallneck, Transformer, Jedi Fallen Order, Vikings, Castle, James Bond car, now this, what is going on? :)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

So ehm... why is this a GWP? You would think the demand for this would already be through the roof, so why not just sell it normally?
And yes, I know the 'bring back castle' sentiment is not as big as people would like to believe. But come on, it's a direct reproduction of an old set. And not a small one either! We haven't had something like this since an long time. There has to be enough demand for something like that to just sell it normally, right?
It's even sized well to not be too expensive if sold on its own. I think it would actually be affordable for once!
If anything I'm afraid Lego's usual lack of stock for anything that drums up demand might make this one go away a little bit too fast!

Of course it's true. Why would you think otherwise?

By in United States,

@LegoSonicBoy:
Looks like it. The upper branch has an abrupt change in diameter that’s a pretty close match to the base and trunk of the old conifers.

@TeriXeri:
It seems weird until you factor in two things. The first is that brown spears signify wooden shafts, which makes more sense in historical settings…which have not had a lot of shelf space in the last 15 years. The second and more significant thing is that they introduced a better dual-molded spear with the S2 Spartan, and that has more commonly shown up in those few historical themes when spears were needed.

@stepwise:
I did get the original version of this set, but wanted the Camoflaged Outpost more than any other Forestmen set, so I had the same thought. However, this is the smallest set of substance in the theme, and I don’t want to imagine what the spend would be for a CO GWP.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m really digging this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really wish Lego would stop doing outright sets as GWPs. This is already a perfectly fine set to offer as an outright $25 purchase, even as a Lego store exclusive. I don't see a reason to have this as a GWP outside of driving FOMO. Probably will just buy it for $30-$40 on the aftermarket like the Ideas boat promo.

And Ninjago has had their Legacy sets reimagining old designs, I can't see why Lego can't make a small theme of updating/upgrading old classic models. Keep it exclusive or whatever, but I don't like constraining outright sets like this to promotions.

Part of it is that yes, apart from the false dichotomy. I want to pay $25 for it instead of $150. The other part is availability - if they just outright sell it, I can get the model outside of a literal *fifteen* day window, without paying resellers.

LEGO would charge at least $30 for this set, if not $40 if it were a real set."

I'd rather pay $20-$40 price to Lego than spend $160 on sets I didn't plan on buying just to get this promo.

Don't get me started on scalpers that will get this GWP only to sell it and not to genuinely enjoy it as a part of their collection.

For €150 you could probably buy 4-6 of this set directly instead of 1 GWP, that's why.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can get people being miffed at this being a GWP to begin with - people would easily be interested in buying multiples of this set to build out a new Forestfolk village or army. That really won’t be feasible for most people - heck, the current GWP thresholds aren’t feasible for MANY people.

Seems like GWPs are best left for standalone models, or something relatively generic that you could build from a standard collection of parts. Who has a ton of Forestfolk shields lying around?

What are you talking about 15 day windows? We'll be lucky if this lasts the morning. Remember the latest Bricklink offering; everybody was saying: "like a lot but these sets are so expensive". Results: Lego sold I believe $17.2 millions worth of these 5 sets in a few hours (10000 of each).

If this is available from 15th to 30th of June, then there is plenty of new stuff to get it (Transformer, Harry Potter, City farm sets, Technic Ferrari, Art, Architecture, and many many more - most themes in fact)

I like this and will try to get it - I want the farm sets and a few HP but it will not be a big deal if I do not get it.

On other news, the USS cardboard has been extended which probably means either: (1) not enough good stuff to buy at the time of the promotion or (2) spending threshold too high for what it is. Seeing this set will not help because buyers will most likely delay their purchases until this set is available - I certainly will. In fact, I hardly ever buy a Lego set (directly from Lego) until there is a very good promotion to go with it (sole exception: Saturn V)

If you send a dark brown tree to Lego as an Idea submission, they will return it as a light brown tree - because dark brown is too dark and Lego is all about whimsical vibrancy and unspoiled innocence but black trees are fine, they are not too dark.

Finally, there is one more thing to notice: the hole/center of the 0 in the 90 year of play. In this case, it is the head of a forest man, on the classic set it is a 2x4 brick. How many variety will we get???

Gravatar

Sell the set that you'll buy in order to get it. Let's say you need to spend $150 to get this GWP. Do that, and sell the $150 set for $130 - Someone will get it because it's cheaper, and you'll "pay" $20 for the GWP.

I do like the idea of extending the "legacy" concept to lines outside of Ninjago. Pretty sure there'd be a market for that.

People want GWPs at different spend thresholds. If everything is a $5 polybag, buyers will feel like they’re getting shortchanged when they buy $250+ sets that can’t be broken up into multiple purchases that net multiple copies of any GWP on offer.

@HOBBES:
But this tree is from the Black Forest, where they grow hams. Also, it’s a direct reference to a set that predated widespread use of brown (one barrels with lid, 3x spears, 2x shields, one bow, one quiver, and one hat are all you get in 6054), and there isn’t a single brown tree fortress in the entire Forestmen subtheme. I think Dark Forest’s 6079 may have been the first.

Doubt it. To this day, Lego does not officially recognize that there is a strong demand for Castle, Pirates and Classic Space. (probably could say the same for Adventurers and Rock Raiders)

Clarification: some people may be tempted to say that Lego produce a lot of space stuff. True but "Classic Space" is: grey wings, blue fuselage, trans-yellow windows, yellow and black stripes and uni-colour spaceman (with a classic helmet - hence the name). Finally Classic Space is not part of a Lego Movie theme with a minifig with a fake broken chinstrap and a fake faded space logo but rather its own independent thing.

Don't kill the messenger just yet but I believe not all reseller(scalper) are bad. I am not one of them but hear me out:

Say, Lego put a value of $25.00 for this set. An individual buys a few sets he/she would normally buy and ends up with a couple of this. He/she then decide to sell it for $30 to recoup a part of his/her costs (basically getting a rebate like he/she could have gotten at Target/Walmart/Amazon/John Lewis/etc). The extra fee pays for the time to place the add, handling and all that. Technically, this is also rendering a service to those who want this set without having to buy a larger set. Where it gets bad is when the asked price is significantly above what is the established retail value.

Gravatar

Don't worry, I don't think any rational person would ever group people doing what you're doing with scalpers who buy a set and instantly put it on ebay for ludicrous prices. You're providing a service in making something cost effective to people not wanting to spend the GWP threshold which is opposite of the greedy people who buy something like a Bricklink set just to hold it hostage until someone pays them twice the cost.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh! We better be able to get this here!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've always wanted to get my hands on a Forestmen set, and have been planning on parting out Castle in the Forest for a while now, so this is a dream come true!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@HOBBES:
“/s” usually works. “/sarcasm” if you want to make sure you get the point across. Plain text is safest, if you’re not absolutely certain it will play nice with the site software, and it’s less likely to cause problems down the road if an update changes things.

As for Classic Space, I believe I determined that less than 25% of all official CS sets used the blue color scheme, and that it’s not even the most common one. None of the CS sets my brother and I got used the blue color scheme. The first set I got like that used light-bley and came with Benny (which is the first time a blue Classic Spaceman came with a blue spaceship).

Regarding the popularity, sure, those themes were 1980’s popular. Star Wars kinda raised the bar on that, and now the vintage themes are fighting above their weight class. Kids just don’t care about them, and AFOLs don’t buy enough to make up the difference.

And there’s a difference between resellers and scalpers. The latter try to scoop up as much as they can with the sole intent of flipping it for a huge markup. Resellers covers those who sit on their copy for years before selling it, or sell off stuff they acquire by coincidence of timing, or even buying up Used lots to separate into individual sets to unload. If someone already plans to buy something, and happens to land a GWP in the process, I don’t see any problem with selling it. I’m even a tiny bit sympathetic to those who scooped up the Ulysses to cover the expense of the Discovery, if they couldn’t otherwise afford to buy the Shuttle. But if the goal of any purchase is just to line their pockets with money, I’m not going to shed any tears if their packages are misdirected. Or rained on.

By in Canada,

@PurpleDave

I am pretty sure the situation I faced (removal of /sarc) was because I used "less than" and "greater than" characters chr$(60) and chr$(62) as used in a HTML tag. These characters are usually a big no-no when you are validating user input. If needed in the future I'll just use "/sarc" as I can see now that it works.

As far as classic space goes, I probably have a much narrower view on it than most people. To me, Classic Space goes from 1978 to 1982 inclusively. The theme had a few consistent items for many years afterward but it seems they tried to be different as well and the clear break took place in 1987 when they released dual colours torso (Futurons I believe). Fundamentally (to me), every theme that has its own name is not Classic Space (my opinion only). While I love Blacktron I, this is not Classic Space. I also very much like M-Tron vehicles but definitely not the minifigs (I like one-colour spaceman). Lots of great subthemes in there but again (to me) Classic is just the first few years of Space. I understand that a great many people will dispute this - I'm no authority on this, this is just my view of it. For those 4 years, the spacemen are monochromatic and only two (enclosed) spacecraft were not blue with trans-yellow windows (6929 and 6890 and borderline not Classic to me). For such a narrow tranche there can only be so many people born in the years where these would have been available and fitting with their age. That is why I understand that Lego might not be interested to produce a set for such a group - keeping my fingers crossed for 10497.

I am no longer selling Lego. I offloaded a few extra sets maybe 7-8 years ago but got burned so badly by eBay that I ceased all activities as I was so frustrated/enraged/flabbergasted by their behaviour - I'm more careful with what I buy so I don't have to sell it later.

Spoiler alert; it will

Gravatar
By in United States,

@HOBBES:
Oh, I meant exclusively sets featuring pre-Futuron Spacemen. Everything that followed is Space, but not Classic Space. But Classic Space never really nailed down a consistent aesthetic like Futuron and everything that followed. It had something similar to Futuron in sets like 6980. Sure, that follows your restrictive era, but even from the first year there were a lot of sets that were just light-grey with no blue. Yes, they do technically fit within the blue color scheme, but they lean a lot closer to the aesthetic of 6891 than 497/928. So the four basic divisions were what is commonly assumed to be _all_ of Classic Space (blue with light-grey accents and trans-yellow canopies), what probably fed into Futuron (white with black accents and trans-blue canopies), the forgotten color scheme (light-grey, occasionally with trans-green canopies, but usually with none at all), and “miscellaneous” (random mixes of all three of these color schemes).

But consider the following:
462/897 from 1978
442/891, 452/894, 885, 886, and 889 from 1979
6821, 6841, 6861, and 6901 from 1980
6801, 6822, 6842, 6870, and 6929 from 1981
6880 and 6890 from 1982

None of these sets fits the stereotypical CS color scheme. Most don’t have any blue or trans-yellow, and a few of the later ones have white and trans-blue, sometimes mixed with light-grey.

By in Poland,

So many people in the comments seem to think GWP are hard to buy, or very expensive. Apart from from StarWars GWP that are reserved for StarWars buys over 200$ ALL of the GWP are easily obtainable from secondary market for a small markup (compared to the official retail worth indicated by LEGO). If you don't want to spend 150$ to get this FREE you can EASILY buy this from ebay or bricklink for 25-40 bucks once its released. And the whole idea that LEGO is making GWP to reward AFOLs is just nonsense. GWP are meant to increase sales not to please fans. Lego is a very sucssesful commercial company, not a charity shop ;)

Gravatar

By in United States,

Aaaaaahhhhhh! Whew. This was the only location-based Forestmen set that I did not acquire back in the day, and it has always been a gaping hole in my collection. Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice to see some comeback on Castle, let's hope we'll see more.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@thor96:
I think you are underestimating how much Castle AFOLs want (multiples of) this set. 10,000 copies of the Forestmen Bricklink set 910001 sold out less than an hour after release (I don't think this happened for any of the other Bricklink sets). Forestmen-specific minifigs and pieces tend to sell on the market for more than those of other castle subthemes. The sheer demand will likely ensure that secondhand sales of the GWP will be at a higher markup than previous GWP sets (which were not revivals of popular discontinued sets/themes from the past)

If this ‘lack’ of sentiment is the reason TLC does not produce Castle sets I would like to see some hardcore data. Most Idea sets target a very small niche compared to the total of LEGO consumers. I am willing to bet the fanbase for a revival of the Castle theme (or pirates for that matter) is a lot bigger than for most of the Idea sets.

Anyhow I love this new set. I got the original as a kid, so the both of them next to each other should be an excellent display.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@kmvk83:
They don’t really hand out hard data like that, but they did let the community know Legends was a flop, when many AFOLs would have sworn it was the best thing since sliced bread. They’ve also done new Space, Castle, and Pirate themes since Star Wars launched, and several of the designers have expressed fondness for the vintage themes. So, either you believe with all your heart that they are just withholding these themes to spite you, or you accept that they have looked at those hard numbers and concluded the market just isn’t there. At least not enough to warrant opening a spot (or several) in their product lineup.

If you go to a physical store, the rules are supposed to be one per customer per day. If you can hit multiple stores each day, one per customer per store per day (for however long they last).
