Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 19

Posted by ,

Our second Hoth-themed item appeared on day eighteen and ample material to draw upon from the icy planet remains, including certain subjects new to Advent Calendars.

Let's open the door and see what comes next...

75184 Star Wars Advent Calendar was released in 2017 and did include an AT-ST, although that example was the bulkier iteration featured in Rogue One and Return of the Jedi. This rendition is instead intended to represent the lighter version from The Empire Strikes Back. Differentiating the two is difficult at this scale, but I think the cockpit is recognisably smaller here, relative to the legs.

The walker is connected to a 2x2 plate with two studs for balance, but its legs are articulated and the cockpit section could be rotated too. Moreover, the weapons are adjustable because they are each attached using a single stud, while another stud represents the access hatch on top!

Overall - Despite its tiny size, this AT-ST captures superb detail and is even recognisable as the design from the Battle of Hoth!

I like the greebling bit with the skate and the two blasters. That works really well at this scale.

This, again, seems to be about on-scale for the turret that we got yesterday. It's hard to find a lot of photos of AT-STs at Hoth, and I'd say in real life, the AT-ST is a little taller than the turrett. It's probably good enough for microscale work. So, good show, I say.

Pretty amazing what they've managed to represent at this scale! And the legs might be about as poseable if not more poseable than the full-sized version!

I'm a bit torn over the use of the side armaments. They're oversized here and while they couldn't have done much better on this scale, they're kind of making the model visually busier than it needs to be. Maybe it's just the angle used on the photo of course.

Surprising to see such an esoteric vehicle represented in an advent calendar! A real deep cut.

it's neat, but at this scale i'm not seeing the difference

@Binnekamp:
They’re sorta serving double-duty, as they keep the head from being too skinny.

Not really. 75322 Hoth AT-ST came out at an affordable price point in January, so it should be on everybody's radar, and I designed it too. Hence I considered it fair game for the advent calendar.

I agree. The skate ear is inspired and the little piece for standing is nice. Strong work, Commander. Radar checked, sets acquired. AC appreciated.

Best Star Wars advent calendar for years, only one duff model so far (the obligatory weapons rack) so hopeful for the remaining five.

I think that was intended to be sarcasm; the AT-ST being one of the more common vehicles to pop up in Lego SW

I always thought the terrain was "inhothpitable" for walkers on Hoth but what do I know!

75322 is a great set. I was hesitant to buy another AT-ST but the probe droid was too cute to resist.

You learn something new everyday: that there was a distinction between the Hoth-AT-ST and the Endor-AT-ST is new to me. Wookieepedia, here I come!

It's just as adorable as the one from 2017, that's for sure.

As far as microbuilds go, this one looks accurate enough to its source material for me to enjoy. Love the asymmetrical detailing on the sides of the cockpit.

@BrickCommander:
Judging from the comments, though, the general fanbase is still learning that there were two different AT-ST designs in the OT. The fact that all three depictions of the Hoth AT-ST came out this year (30495, 75322, 75340) means they would have all been designed before the first of these three sets hit stores just about one year ago. It also makes me wonder how recently you guys learned of the difference. I mean, the theme hit drinking age without seeing even a single instance of this variant. I would think you’d have jumped at the chance to design something untouched from the OT, and seeing three unique takes on it within a calendar year suggests that’s exactly what happened.
