Chinese Traditional Festival sets unveiled!

Posted by ,

LEGO has announced the latest selection of the always-impressive Chinese Traditional Festival sets, at the fifth annual Chinese International Import Expo.

Four sets comprise the 2023 range, celebrating the Year of the Rabbit. Maybe the most exciting is 80111 Lunar New Year Parade, which contains no fewer than seventeen minifigures, one of whom appears to be wearing a purple Classic Space helmet and air tanks!

The range will be available on the 25th of December in China and should be released shortly afterwards worldwide. View these sets below...

They look great, but.. where is the mech? :/

OMG a Purple Classic Space helmet and airtank!!!

By in Australia,

Love the printed Boba tea
Adore the purple spaceman
It amazes me how the CNY sets continue to be a great line of sets not just for a casual audience but for us fans as well

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Besides the space helmet and tanks, I also see a pirate hat and castle helmet: a nod to all 3 classical lines.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Brilliant sets as expected. Modular might have to wait until February.

Please pinch me to check I'm not dreaming the Purple classic helmet and air tanks...

I don't know... To me it looks just like regular blue. But if it really IS purple, that would be amazing!

And I just missed that purple CMF torso :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

I may try and pick up that tree as a good foliage boost depending on the price... Otherwise, there are some fantastic new torsos in the parade set! Also, is that the second time we have gotten the Thanos head?

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Very excited for the Lunar New Year parade. Seems like they have wheels underneath, which is very similar to what we chinese called as ?? (Basically platforms decorated with stuff and goes on street parade with a whole lineup of them)

Lunar new year display looks meh for the price they are charging. Seemed a tat small to me but nevertheless still interesting.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

that giant baby minifigure head is creeping me out, for some reason xD

aside from that, those are some really beautiful sets...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The parade is a definite must have for me. It also fits so cool to my Lego town 'Monkie Town'. The other two sets are this time so 'you can buy, but you do not have to'. Good part donors.

Interesting that Lego is now releasing a set about Chinese culture for Duplo as well.

@darthnorman ... The mech is part of the new Monkie Kid sets, not the New Year releases.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

80110 will be the first Chinese New Year set I'll skip (except 80101 and 80102, not available here anyway), as I don't find it really appealing or usable in a city-like set up, unlike the previous sets. 40648 is a nice surprise, as I thought we'd only get the Rabbit GWP; now we'll see whether the former is a GWP too, or an add-on like the Chinese Brickheadz.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

They're okay, but not nearly as good as 80105 or 80107 were.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What do the oversized minifigure heads being carried in the parade represent? Masks?

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

None of them was visually appeling for the first look but I have just noticed last carrige of the 80111. How clever TLG :) It is just a celebration of the main themes, castle, pirates, space, town. The most important is the missing part of the purple spaceman from 71032-11. Well done TLG!

By in Sweden,

It was mentioned in Jay’s brick blog that there are things moving on the parade wagons when they are pushed, do you have any more info on that?

Beautiful sets as usual, although I spotted a sticker in the parade which makes me a bit nervous

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

A bit controversial to include a printed bubble tea piece in a set glorifying China considering bubble tea was invented in Taiwan (which is its own country regardless of what China thinks).

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Money tree looks really good, but I can’t say the same about the parade. I prefer the sets that more closely resemble buildings or locations like the Temple Fair and Chinese Gardens. The other two I don’t really care for.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Atuin:
Compare to the giant 1x2 plate above and to the right, or the Castle guy's legs. I know purple, and those are dark-purple.

@SG_BRICKCOLLECTOR27:
The American term for these is a "float". There are also some weird terms for specific types, like falloons (balloon towed on a float) and balloonicles (self-propelled balloons).

@Legonk:
I see a few stickers. The stand for the rabbit guy clearly has a sticker of a rabbit right below him. The purple spaceman's curved tile also has a sticker. They're out of focus, but the studs on the giant LEGO plate and brick are probably stickered logos, and the Pirate probably also has a stickered tile. I _think_ the curved banner at the front of the drum float is stickered, too.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Is this the first year that we don’t get two Chinese minifig scale sets?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Love the money tree.

Oh, and the Lunar Parade is about twenty levels of self-aware Lego meta-humour. Love it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I feel lied to: Money DOES grow on trees!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can we talk about the lady looking at her cell phone _while_ being part of a parade? Unplug, lady! Be part of the moment!

I adore the pink (cherry?) blossom, and it looks like the rabbit float has some kind of movement mechanism!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I'm bound to agree with fellow users who are not thrilled by the 2023 CNY sets. Maybe Lego has spoiled us with great sets in the past editions, and now this selection just seems below par, for some reason. I'm not saying the sets are disappointing, though. The Lunar New Year parade has a really nice feel (and lots of interesting minifigures - the purple spaceman overall!), the money tree is a great display piece, but overall I'm not blown away with awe as I have been for all previous CNY sets.
And I'll probably end up with just getting 80111 because the theme in general is one of the best new things around in the Legoverse.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Will there be any BrickHeadz or animal GWP? I hope so, they were my favourites.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@sir_vasco:
Pretty sure the girl in front of her is doing a video call with her grandparents on a tablet. Smartphones can be used for things besides surfing the internet.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I actually like the three non-Duplo sets. 40648 looks nice and has good foliage elements, 80110 looks very attractive with the 3D design (I love the Koi and the flower) and again has good parts - I hope we get an explanation of the printed red 2x2 Round tile Chinese characters?
80111 has so much going on that looks great; the rabbit (I suspect bowing and spinning as the wheels roll?), the Lego green dragon, the minifigs. I think I noted the number of stickers in the sets in previous years but there's more than we can expect to be printed?
Health & Safety should have a word with the red MF at the front; serious facial burns when those firecrackers blow! ;-)

I'll tell you, all the existing blue elements shown in the picture seem realistically blue, whereas the spaceman looks darn purple to me.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I really like the parade set! If that holds up when more pictures are revealed and they keep the price reasonable I'll probably get that one. The other sets also look great for what they are, they're just not something I'm interested in.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love these!! I love the colors, building techniques and representation.
Though it's about time that they branch out and start representing other cultures as well. I would love to see Cultures of India, South America, Canada, Africa, New Zealand, etc. LEGO isa worldwide brand and there are plenty of markets that want sets that represent them as well.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

The parade looks very fun and colorful. It also seems to have mechanism that wobbles and move the figures on trailers! And those purple spacey things, wow, nice one!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

While I was hoping for another building set like the previous couple years, these sets still look fantastic and (minus the duplo set) will absolutely be a day one purchase for me!

Hey, they're letting us complete the purple spaceman they started with the Alien Creature torso! Now we just need a grey and green helmet and tanks of both to get every torso into a full suit!

The Everyone is Awesome has a purple figure, with purple hands. The torso is available on Bricks and Pieces for about a dollar.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I dunno. The parade looks like chaotic smorgasbord that will not display well.

I kinda like the squares with the decoration, but probably not enough to buy it when there is not enough display space in my house. They might make a nice gift to the right person, though

By in New Zealand,

I feel like this needs to be pointed out every single year in response to the vaguely xenophobic comments. Irregardless of politics Chinese New Year is A Big Deal not only for people in Mainland China, but also for Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong and of course the greater diaspora.

The 2023 sets look… fine? Somewhat lacking in coherence compared to previous offerings. Amazing parts packs though!

There is already a green spaceman from the exp suit set back in 2014 I think it was.

Also, we now need a plain purple space torso, or to get plain purple arms and replace the ones in the ailen

By in United States,

While I really like the Parade set (will get it), and I appreciate the attention that LEGO has given to producing Chinese themed sets, I really wish they would spread the love and do the same thing for other cultures. I understand that China is a growing market, but what about similar products for other countries? How about having an international series highlighting celebrations from various nations. This could be achieved with several sets released throughout the year.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I've already got several of the Chinese New Year sets from the past, and the Parade is definitely highly attractive. Would go so far as to call it a must have. Not only for the purple spaceman...

I'm going to pitch that, no, criticizing China as a country is not "xenophobic" as long as it's plainly separate from Chinese culture. Given that China lays claim to an independent people and is likely to invade Taiwan to re-assert that ownership, as well as their sham claim of the artificial nine-dash line over the South China Sea, it should be understandable that Bricksetters are nervous about Lego associating with a tyrannical hegemon. (I don't think I've seen any Russian Lego sets yet, and people would probably be *very* askance about those.)

I can agree that the color fidelity isn't the best in the pic posted here, but there's another photo of the box art, and it's very definitely purple.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I really like the parade. The Lego wagon with the lego dragon and brick and pirate, knight and spaceman is a cool addition, but the best parts for me i want the most are those creepy pink maxi heads and that rabbit headgear. So awesome!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Some real beauty there. I have all the CNY sets and have enjoyed each quite a bit. Can’t wait to get more info.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pretty surprised LEGO is continuing with these China sets. …Must be some pretty easy cash for LEGO to be whiling to risk the potential Mudd on the face if China moves on Taiwan.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@TheLegoManic:
The green Spacemen from the Exo Suit have modern helmets. They’re currently the only color that can’t be built with either a retro or faux-retro helmet, although the only blue version of the latter has Benny’s broken chinstrap.

@ResIpsaLoquitur:
They did Russian LEGO sets already. Don’t you remember Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Meh.

Wake me up when LEGO produces an American Independence Day Parade set with a big troop of drummers and pipers in Revolutionary War-era uniforms complete with tri-fold hats and a big Betsy Ross flag.

Well, those were *Soviet* sets, anyway, although I'm not even sure they had any distinct communist markings on them.

So glad to see the Chinese New Year theme continue. This line continues to be one of my favorites from LEGO. I get all the sets every year and these new ones look spectacular as well. Can’t wait to build them and put them on display!

By in Canada,

@PurpleDave Um...didn't 71708 contain a 'fine' version of a blue faux-retro 'space' helmet...I got a few from B&P a loooong time ago...

Beyond that, like the sets; hope the part find their way into places like Bricklink and B&P...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the parade, I will probably get that one but the others don't appeal. I think it would be a nice seasonal display in a lot of people's cities for Chinese New Year.

The brick built fish and flower display in 80110 look great, but without minifigs I don't suppose that will be a particularly good seller in the West.

Also, why does the money tree have a set number in a different sequence? Is it going to be a set available in a different way or for longer than the New Year sets?

And granted, yes, they were the Soviet Union back then, but it’s pretty clear that Russia was king among equals."

I'm still surprised they did Indiana Jones at all, and are picking it up again for next year. The Soviets did horrible things in the real world and are almost on par as far with Germany as evil atrocities go. Artificial famines, Stalin's purges, outright massacre's of innocents during the War... Nobody will ever know how many died, but I'll be willing to bet it's either at level or close to 1930's - 40's Germany's crimes against humanity.

Yes, I understand the sets / films are not based in reality (the Ark has never been found and Crystal Skulls are just superstitious nonsense) but that doesn't mean what the governments they are representing in those children's toys didn't do horrible things, that should never, ever be forgotten.

Gravatar

The parade looks fantastic and will be added to my Lunar New Year collection. The Money Tree and Lunar New Year Display look nice, but fall outside of what I usually collect. Definite maybes. Im not the target audience for Duplo, so no.

@brick_r:
Apparently, it did. I don’t remember hearing about that. There’s also a dark-bley one in a Creator set this year, which is the first instance I’ve seen of something being attached to the dimples like they did for the Yellow Castle knights.

@Murdoch17:
The history lessons I had in school tended to focus on the atrocities of Germany during WWII, and those of Soviet Russia after the war. I do remember hearing, once, the number “20 million” attached to WWII-era Russia. But while they weren’t really our ally, they were the enemy of our enemy, and we weren’t really looking for excuses to dive right into another war.

Crystal skulls have been debunked, for sure. The Ark is, I believe, considered to be factual objects by historical standards (the Torah, Bible, Quran, and any derivative texts collectively count as one source, but a second independent source is required by modern standards). The Grail, if defined as “the last cup a man named Jesus drank from”, must certainly exist if you can prove the man existed (again, second independent record required). I have no idea about the Sankara stones. I don’t know if they were made up for the movie, or based on something historical.

As Crystal Skull (1957) jumped forward several years from Last Crusade (WWII), I expect IJ5 will do the same from Crystal Skull. I haven’t been seeing much info about the film, so I don’t even know if there will be Soviets involved in the story.

Supposed to be set in late '60's, among other times. ;-) Back to the German villain's again. (They should have never done Crystal Skull, and this will only be worse, IMO)

Germans? In the late 60’s? By that time, East Germany was basically the Toadie to the Soviet Union’s Scut Farkas. They didn’t seem to pose much of a threat beyond a statistically questionable performance at the Olympics, and to their own citizens’ attempts to defect to West Germany. And West Germany had embraced more of a capitalist/rock & roll lifestyle, to the point where they didn’t pose much of a threat to anyone besides those whose success derived from the survival of the East German government.

By in United States,

I feel like 80107 Spring Lantern Festival was the high point of the line. A great set that ALSO fit into modular buildings (and, as a baseplate-and-a-half, worked well to offset the equally sized Assembly Square set).

The parade looks like it's got some nice pieces and minifigs, but in the end it's just loose parts that will likely end up in the part bin and not part of a permanent display like 80107 is.

It's also going to be wild times on Bricklink soon after this set comes out and all the big BL sellers buy it to part it out. Heaven knows how much that helmet and airtank will sell for!
