2023 Super Mario sets revealed!

Posted by ,

LEGO has revealed seven Super Mario sets that'll be available from 1st January next year.

There are new character packs, expansion packs, a creativity toolbox, and a whole host of new friends and foes for the plumbers to interact with and defeat.

View images of the line-up after the break and in the database.

71413 Character Packs – Series 6

Make the LEGO Super Mario levels you build even more fun with 8 collectible Character Packs. Each Series 6 pack contains a buildable character with an Action Tag. Maybe it’s a Blooper with 3 cute baby Bloopers, a Green Toad on a tropical beach, or an Ice Bro. Perhaps it’s Birdo, a Bramball, a Sumo Bro, Spike or a pair of Cat Goombas. Open the pack and find out!

71414 Conkdor's Noggin Bopper Expansion Set

Can you conquer the Conkdor? Jump on the trigger in front of this huge character with its long neck, big beak and cool glasses. But watch out – as soon as you land on the trigger, the Conkdor will try to bop you. Defeat it by stomping on its head, then leap on the springboard to make it rise again!

71415 Ice Mario Suit and Frozen World Expansion Set

Put on the Ice Mario suit to power up for action in the frozen world! Skate on the ice and throw ice balls at enemies. Launch the Cooligan into the ice block to smash it and reveal the Goomba. Defeat both enemies to collect your coin rewards!

71416 Lava Wave Ride Expansion Set

Get ready to ride the lava wave! Jump on the Lava Lift and keep on rocking on the red-hot wave. Just be careful not to fall off into the flames below. And watch out for the Fire Bro in the nearby tower! Knock the Lava Bubbles off the crests of the wave and defeat them and the Fire Bro to collect more coins!

71417 Fliprus Snow Adventure Expansion Set

Get ready for a supercool Fliprus snow adventure! Knock the snowman’s head off to fell the Red Koopa Troopa. Skate on the ice – but be careful not to slide into the water. If you get cold, sit by the fire to warm up! Defeat the Freezie to reach the hidden frozen fruit. Battle the ice-ball-flinging Fliprus, then give the baby penguin the frozen fruit as a gift and hang out for a while!

71418 Creativity Toolbox Maker Set

Add extra detail to your LEGO Super Mario world with the Creativity Toolbox Maker Set! Recreate Super Mario grass, desert and lava levels with iconic mountains, clouds, trees, pyramids, flames, a Checkpoint Flag and more. Combine these LEGO elements and builds with your Starter Courses and Expansion Sets or use them to make displays for the included Wendy, Blue Yoshi and Goomba figures!

71419 Peach’s Garden Balloon Ride Expansion Set

Fly around Peach’s Garden in a hot-air balloon! Discover a Super Star Block in the smoke coming from the chimney of the Blue Toad’s house. Knock the top off the fountain to reveal a Coin Block. Part the clouds over Pom Pom and topple her. Hop out of the balloon, throw the turnip and claim all your coin rewards. Oh – and look inside the balloon for a hot little surprise!

As usual, I want all of these. Remember when the line was first announced, many people said "no one wants this, where are the minifigures, no one will buy these?" Now we're working our way through all the Koopa kids. I'm very glad the line has legs.

By in United Kingdom,

Probably a smart move to make the character packs more substantial, and having fewer of them.

Oh, these look great!

There's a lot here I've been hoping for—Ice levels, for starters, but also Birdo and regular-size Spike and Sumo Bro in the character packs, a Conkdor, Pom-Pom, and Wendy Koopa! Now there's only two Koopalings left to appear in Lego form!

Some interesting new parts, too—short "BURPs" and cracked ice tiles in the ice levels.

I love those cat goombas! I wish I didn't have to brave the world of blind boxes to get them. :(

By in United States,

Another Koopaling, lets go! Also two Goombas in one blind bag? That's cool! Many of the series 5 characters were bigger than the first 4, which sorta made up for the higher price tag. Having multiple small characters instead is neat. Fire Bro is cool too, and most of these sets are cheap. Nice!

By in Canada,

More fun for those who like this theme but:

It seems to be an expensive theme for completists. This started just in 2020 and there are already 126 sets (a bit less if we remove the doubles in character packs and bundles) - let's say 110 sets in just over 2 years is quite a bit no?

As always I like this kind of stuff anyway for new parts and parts recolour.

By in Netherlands,

I hope there will also come a new large set like The Mighty Bowser. Already got a nice collection with the NES, ?-block, Mighty Bowser, Atari and the Sonic set.

By in United States,

Dang, there's some great enemy designs in this wave. Sumo Bro, Cooligan, Conkdor...

How many Koopalings are left by the way, I think just Roy and Morton? I'm losing track of that one.

By in Netherlands,

Those look great fun, and nice designs for the "system" .
Not my thing to make those mario levels but I can see the fun in it for sure.

Bricklink should have you covered (eventually)!

Would you look at how everyone wants these now.

Nah, I think the complainers got tired of whining about every set announcement and just kind of moved on. Notice how this article doesn't have that many comments (yet?).

Y'know, I could just be not paying attention, but I feel like the comments section on this site has been less whiny in general lately? Even when a set warrants complaining about, like the recent Hulkbuster, the critical comments seem to be more constructive now than they used to be on this site.

By in United States,

These look pretty good! I don't plan on picking anything up as I'm a minifig man myself, but the wave as a whole looks really strong!

I have noticed it too. Although I wouldn't get my hopes up until we have the Star Wars and Marvel January waves announced. Those seem to attract complaining more than anything else. I guess Ideas as well...

I’m not sure how it is in other countries, but the Mario sets tend to go on clearance quite quickly in the UK which knocks a good 20-30% off each set. Still not cheap, but definitely a good saving and I’m more than happy to pay the clearance prices for these. I haven’t noticed it as much with the most recent wave though, so I might have to pounce on them at retail price before they leave shop shelves.

I used to be one of those complainers, as regular readers will know.
But recent negative developments in my family have necessitated a reorganization of priorities, hence I don't waste my time on even more negativity elsewhere anymore. Must try to keep a positive outlook.
Nuff said.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Awesome sets! Conkdor is especially impressive for such a small model.

And LEGO Birdo is all I've ever wanted...

Well, that attitude is actually a rather positive way of looking at things, but the reason is quite unfortunate. Hope those personal matters work themselves out for you!

Same here (besides the "creativity toolbox").

And I admit I was one of these naysayers people at first, but this theme grew out to be one of my favourite Lego themes, and I collect it all. They're so creative and joyful.

It's also, luckily, one of the easiest themes to find on sale and/or used., at least where I live. 30% is normal for these, and used sets are to be found all the time on marketplace for cheap - so not that heavy on the wallet to collect.

By in Norway,

Not my cup of tea, but these all look great!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looking over the set images again - Birdo debuting is great, but I'm not sure that making her a character pack was a great idea. That one is going to be a LOT more desirable than the others.

Love the Blooper Nanny + little Blooper Babies

EDIT: Another observation, the Peach garden set seems pretty well-timed with the Peach Gardens course expected to debut in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe very soon. I wonder if that was intentional? Probably not, but it's a fun thought lol

Gravatar
By in United States,

$24.99 for the ice outfit? Jesus I though Mario was expensive enough already...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This theme is still going? Oh well, good luck to those who like them

"And honestly, I think this wave might be what gets me into the theme and Mario series in general properly (outside of the character packs that I was already getting.)"
Regarding the Mario series itself, I would definitely recommend Super Mario 3D World as a starting point. It's an accessible but much richer game than New Super Mario Bros. U, plus it's a source for many of the subjects in the Lego Mario sets.

And honestly, I always thought that 3D World's levels kind of looked like Lego models :-D

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope that 71416 Lava Wave Ride Expansion Set works with a crank. If so, I'm going to adapt this design to be a Sea Dragon amusement park ride.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The new character packs look great. If Lego figures out how to sell me all 8 with no doubles I'll gladly buy them.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Ice pieces?! New smaller ice rocks?
So cool! Will pab them for sure in the future!

Gravatar
By in United States,

That Lava Wave Ride is cool! Rather, it's smoking hot. LOL. And the Creativity Toolbox looks to be so fun. I know my 8 yr old nephew would go bonkers with that one.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Perhaps someday LEGO can figure out how to distribute sRGB images for use on the web. At least the boxart images have the proper color. Some consistency would be nice, though.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

This looks like a strong wave of sets! Very fun.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Oh yeah baby! I need little Spike en Birdo the most. But i like all sets. The ice world with its weird ice plates look better than the beach world with Dorrie. I am a it behind with some Mario sets, but lego is going to get some of my money with these sets again.

Oh i need that blue Yoshi as well! They need to make more shyguys though in different colors

I think part of it may be that most of us are now pretty well in agreement on the “too expensive” front. With the price increases and many bigger sets feeling too expensive, even more so than usual, we all are kind of feel the same ways. Thus, any negativity and complaints don’t feel as bad or ugly. Things do seem more civil.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Yay Birdo! I was very pleased I got Iggy this year Ah ha! Iggy and Birdo are the characters my family used in Mariokart. (I used Luigi but he's too expensive).

Have we had a Diddy Kong yet?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Wake me up when there are minifigures.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

See, LEGO found a way to keep the Power-Up Packs alive without wasting ideas, if the original Power-Up sets had been similar in design with an enemy to build or even the Power-Up item in LEGO form then we might have seen a nice continuation of them. I fear that my desire to grab as many sets as possible from this theme is going to drive me to the brink of madness.

I'm afraid you will be sleeping for a while... Our best chance for Mario Minifigures will be around the release of the movie. Even then, I'm not sure it will happen. Although I still think they could do a Mario Kart series. The only other time we might get figures is through the next D2C. Honestly, I would prefer Zelda minifig sets, but that doesn't look like it will happen for a while either.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I love how bright and colourful this theme is.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Great sets.

@GSR_MataNui:
Yeah, but they’re both furries, so make sure nothing’s going on when you open the sack and peek inside…

@ItisNoe:
Nah. I bought a handful of “blind” bags after palping them. Most of them were multiple copies of the Lightning Bolt Battle Pack. I was working on a vignette of Billy Batson transforming into Captain Marvel, so the timing worked out nicely. Mostly I just hit up PAB to order any pieces I’m interested in. Even a theme like Galidor gave us a really solid click-hinge design that’s still in use today.

Same here. I bought several of the Super Mario sets (and character packs) at 40 to 50% off, and at that price they make for great part packs. Lots of interesting pieces, prints and recolours.

It's not that at all. These are just some really nice sets! I clicked on this link expecting to see more of the same, and finding validation that I was pretty much done with Mario.

But, damn! These are good! Just when you think you're out, they pull you back in.

Still holding out hope for some minifig characters to supplement this line. Think how popular the Bowser set would be with a few minifigs thrown in.
