LEGO Lord of the Rings to make a comeback!

Posted by ,

LEGO has published the names of around 150 2023 sets on its customer services instructions portal today.

For your convenience, I've added them to our database, which now lists 165 sets due for release early next year. I've had to guess the theme for some of them where LEGO has not specified it, based on the set numbers.

Among the more interesting additions are three sets with the names of Lord of the Rings characters numbered in the 406xx series, which suggests to me that they could be BrickHeadz.

Yah ! Lord of the Rings and/or LotR Brickheadz. I made a normal Gandalf, Saruman and Raddagast a couple of years ago and attempted a 3x3 Frodo. Mixed results....

I am 99% certain that the ‘Ice Dragon Creature’ named polybag is part of Ninjago, as they’ve done microscale versions of sets as polybags for several years now and one of the new sets coincidentally has the exact same name (except the ‘Zane’s’ part).

I've heard it's 3 BH sets and a big-money Last Homely House.

RSOTD a coincidence then @Huw?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Dog Park and Scooter sounds like a great polybag to get a variety of dog molds. More dachshunds, please! Speaking of dachshunds, I love the dachshund with the prosthetic wheels in the Friends Dog Rescue Center (that may not be the exact set name… I navigated away and have a short memory).

Really happy for everyone excited, I know a lot of people want this. me? i'm not too fussed, but I do like some fantasy builds. excited to see what it brings, and I hope to be as pleased with the builds as everyone else is now.

Surely the one we're all searching the list for is the 2023 modular?

I don't particularly care for Brickheadz, but I really need LotR Lego to make a comeback. The last time they were in production was during my dark ages when I wasn't getting any sets. I know there are rumors of a large DTC Rivendale set, but not sure of anything else yet.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yeah, Brick Clicker reported that these would be brickheadz, with 10316 likely being a Rivendell set with a rumoured $500 price tag. So hopefully we'll get more sets for LOTR.

Brickheadz and a collosal set most folk can't buy ... Big whoop.

Where are the normal sets and affordable battle kits? There are so many things they missed the first the around that would make great building sets.

Putting all the eggs in one £500 set feels like a miss

I’d love if they released more regular-sized sets too. I never understood why they just had the big massive sets in The Simpsons line and not regular-sized sets and vehicles, they could have had that series going for years.

"Now, where to begin? Oh yes, in a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." And hobbits went to: Rivendell, Minas Tirith, Minas Morgul, Meduseld, Mount Doom and just for good measure give us a Barad Dur! So many great locations to recreate in Lego - bring it on!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh wow. That's a pleasant surprise. Most of us will take LOTR sets in any form.

2 or 3 BH, I don't remember well, I don't really care about them. But it seems to be a big D2C Rivendell set. I hoped for Minas Tirith :(

By in United States,

Maybe we'll be lucky, and the three named sets are dioramas like this year's Star Wars sets instead of Brickheadz (ugh). Could easily see the Balrog as a Bigfig, but undersized as a Brickhead? Nope. Still, incredibly excited about this.

But I wonder if the Balrog will include a burnt leaf.

Agreed. I’m getting fatigued by all these big-ticket items… certainly makes me enjoy the hobby less. Part of my joy was in making random store visits, picking up an item or two, and having it be like a weekly treat. Now, I have to budget for weeks/months, with very little engagement in between…

I happen to agree with you, it is a very welcomed feeling when you can have smaller sets, can't believe we are calling $150 sets smaller now.

Warg Park and Scooter would be intriguing.

Brickheadz? Easy pass.

By in United Kingdom,

This is the way.

(Am I doing this correctly?)

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I seen pictures of these over a month ago, sure i saved them too....

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't care what line they are, heck, I've never even considered buying a single Friends set but I'd preorder every single LoTR Friends set if that's the route they went.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s going to be a set that almost costs a thousand dollars, isn’t it?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I remember the LotR brickheadz rumors were Aragorn and Arwen and Gandalf and Balrog. I don't remember a third brickheadz set, but that isn't to say that there won't be one. There is also supposed to be a $500 Rivendell set. That all being said, I don't remember who was leaking this information besides that it wasn't Promobricks. So this could be completely wrong. Hopefully they have some regular playsets as well.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes! I've never purchased BH but if done right, I just might get a LOTR one. maybe. Super hurray for seeing LOTR comeback.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@goldenguy880:
They already have the LotR/Hobbit licenses. TRoP would likely require another license.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As some who normally buys $20-$100 worth of Lego a year, it's going to be an expensive year next between LOTR, Indiana Jones & Jurassic Park. Guess I'm going to start saving now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hopefully they do a few regular scale sets too. Last time around I wish they would have made Minas Tirith, Balrog, Barad-dur, Rivendell (I don’t count the $30 set) and Osgiliath. If we get any one of those 5 that would be awesome. 5 years ago I thought this theme was never going to come back so even a couple sets are welcome. I hope the Rivendell rumor is true even if it is $500.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Still disappointed that the IDEAS Middle Earth map from a couple voting cycles ago didn't get chosen.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m excited not for the Brickheadz specifically but the fact that LOTR is back. I’m very interested to see what else they do.

Gravatar
By in United States,

We shall see what happens. LOTR is THE theme for me. HP brought me back into LEGO and LOTR kept me there.

As us fans say on message boards they are missing X, Y, Z but I guess we will see what they offer us. I'd love more battle packs like the Star Wars sets released this year. A handful of Orcs/Uruks, another with Rohan, another with Gondor, Elves...etc. It would be so amazing to army build. Every fan would buy multiples. But I guess I won't get my hopes up until anything happens. I'm sure the $500 set will look amazing, but at that cost, yeesh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm probably doing this wrong, but my wife and I are very happy to see 40646 Daffodils, since those are her favorite flowers.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Me personally I’m not a big LOTR fan but I am a very big fan of Brickheadz so as always these and any other New wave of Brickheadz will be a welcome addition to my collection.

From falconbricks.com I think it’s the following for the LOTR Brickheadz:

40630 Frodo & Gollum
40631 Gandalf & Balrog
40632 Aragorn & Arwen

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yay, LotR is back! Oh, brickheadz. Here's hoping it's -really- back... Come on, Minas Tirith!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have zero interest in Brickheadz. And a $500 set would be even worse. You would think Lego would conduct surveys and do market research to find out what they’re fans really want and not just produce sets at the two extremes. In fact, they could save money for their marketing department and just look at all the sets that reached 10,000 on Ideas. I can’t imagine that this is what the vast majority of people who bought the original sets would have wanted.

However, this does mean they have the license once again so perhaps we can get some more play sets in the future.

Rivendell = Last Homely House

I hate BH, too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

No interest in Brickheads. Will have to see what the big set will be but way too expensive!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

For lotr I am ok with just a large set every 2 years until we have all the main large scenes completed in brick form. BUT we also need battle packs to give us armies for the scenes. Oliphant and balrog and a bunch of big fig ogres with variety. So much that can be made into battle pack sized sets to compliment those large buildings and scenes.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I'd be excited but you just know that if LEGO does more LOTR sets they'll all be massive and expensive, like a $2000, 20,000-piece Helm's Deep set with 50 minifigures or a life-sized Gollum or something stupid like that.

Crikey, if those images are correct, Brickheadz continues to mangle more characters. Why do they persist with those cold, dead eyes...?

And that is NOT the brick-built balrog I've always dreamed of.

Gravatar
By in France,

Brickheadz? Who cares about this crap? The only thing worth waiting for is the D2C set (was hoping for Minas Tirith, but now the rumors say Rivendell)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don’t understand the appeal of BrickHeadz, other than being cheap. The images of these have not changed my mind. Let’s hope the Rivendell set will live up to expectations.

Lord of the Rings would be amazing to see again from LEGO, I really hope they decide to make more than just BrickHeadz, which I will also buy
