LEGO announces Clone Trooper helmets!

Posted by ,

LEGO Star Wars launched the Helmet Collection in 2020, although examples from the Clone Wars era have been notably overlooked. Fortunately, that changes this year:

Clone your own icons with new LEGO Star Wars helmet building sets – marking 20 years of the Clone Wars

Revealed ahead of Nuremberg Toy Fair, the LEGO Group has announced two new additions to its popular series of Star Wars helmet building sets, both linked to the 20th anniversary of the Clone Wars – those events in the Star Wars galaxy which kicked off in the 2002 film Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and continued in the animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

LEGO Star Wars fans will soon be able to join the Grand Army of the Republic by building the instantly recognisable helmet models of Captain Rex and Clone Commander Cody, two iconic heroes from the Clone Wars as they arrive in two new sets for fans, available from March 1st.

75349 Captain Rex Helmet

  • 854 pieces
  • £59.99, $69.99, €69.99

The 854-piece set based on Captain Rex’s helmet captures the iconic blue trim and range-finder of the 501st battalion’s clone captain, one of the most famous characters in the animated series The Clone Wars and second-in-command to Jedi General Anakin Skywalker.

75350 Clone Commander Cody Helmet

  • 766 pieces
  • £59.99, $69.99, €69.99

Clone Commander Cody’s helmet is recreated in a new 766-piece set, bringing to life the striking orange detailing of the helmet that appeared prominently in many episodes of The Clone Wars, with Clone Commander Cody standing alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi as another commanding officer of the 212th clone battalion.

Each set is highly detailed and features printed nameplates of each character, making them perfect collectables for any LEGO Star Wars fan and the perfect build-to-display models to mark this milestone anniversary for the Clone Wars.

“For two decades, the Clone Wars has shaped a hugely important story in the history of the Star Wars saga, and we feel immensely proud to be bringing two of its key players to life for fans around the world,” said Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Design Lead for LEGO Star Wars.

“These rewarding, relaxing builds should be able to take pride of place for any LEGO Star Wars collector and offer a new way to create, display and enjoy these iconic characters who played such a pivotal role in many stories that we know and love from the galaxy far, far away…”

According to research from the LEGO Group’s global ‘Play Well 2022 Report’, 80% of adults are looking for new ways to unwind and relax (80%), with the majority of them (92%) wanting to unwind and find their flow through activities that are related to their hobbies and interests, including beloved product lines such as LEGO Star Wars.

Since 2020, the LEGO Star Wars Helmets portfolio has continued to grow with iconic helmets recreated from the Empire, dark side, and others. In March 2022, the company launched its latest two products: 75327 Luke Skywalker (Red Five) Helmet and 75328 The Mandalorian Helmet.

The 854-piece LEGO Star Wars– Captain Rex and 766-piece LEGO Star Wars– Clone Commander Cody helmet building sets are available from March 1st from LEGO.com and LEGO retailers priced at €69.99 / $69.99 / £59.99. Each set has a recommended building age of 18+.

Both look decent, making them different phases makes sense in some ways (so not too similar to each other) but then hurts the uniformity with them not matching. Would have been fun to have them both able to build either phase (though I imagine incredibly difficult)

Not got any of the helmets so far, and while I do like Rex (as a character, front of model looks a little flat), that is unlikely to change.

Now where is a Rex Minifig...

Cody looks good. Less sure about Rex. The “jaw” part of the helmet reminds me of a segmented caterpillar.

I’m so happy about those two! I’ll get them as soon as they’re out.

By in Latvia,

I can't believe they actually made CapnRex101 set.

Is it that late? Okay, I'm expecting some great Ep6-sets to come!

By in Poland,

How are they both $69.99 if there is almost 100 pieces in difference between them?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I really like the SW helmet sets and these two look like great editions. I'll definitely be picking these two up.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Cool but I think it would've made more sense to have Cody be phase 2 and Rex be phase 1

One's a bargain.

Are these considered Prequel Trilogy helmets or Clone Wars? I don’t believe haven’t had any Sequel Trilogy helmets yet, where’s Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, etc?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I’m so modifying the Cody one into a generic P1 helmet! The shapes on that look absolutely superb. Rex’s one is fantastic and long overdue too but upon closer inspection has a few shortcomings around the chin area. Still, it’s a fantastic model and absolutely perfect for Clone Wars fans.

Gravatar

I hope they’ve got the prong thing in the right place on this helmet (I never did understand what the issue was but it seemed a lot of people were angry about it).

One is overpriced and the other one is even more overpriced. And I mean that completely seriously.
I have always felt all these helmet sets do is take up Star Wars spots resulting in fewer sets of ships and things my sons and I would actually like to build.
When the first helmets were announced I thought "cool"... until we saw them on display at a store and I found out they were downsized to fit on a hamster. If they were actual size they'd be expensive but at least they would make sense. Idk.. and then lastly, have some glaringly obvious stickers just for fun.

So the leaks were real, huh.

By in Netherlands,

The press text is absolute garbage though. Like wtf does ‘adults want to relax’ have to do with ‘star wars fans come get your favorite characters’ helmets’? And man, marketing this with the 20th anniversary of AotC is such lame bullcrap. Cody didn’t appear until Episode 3 and Rex didn’t even exist before the Clone Wars aired in 08. Literally nobody will care anyway cuz they just want these sweet models yet LEGO marketing went through the trouble of finding something to ‘celebrate’ with these models that were obviously planned way before this ‘milestone’ played any role. And did they forget it’s already 2023? The ‘Clone Wars 20’ icon looks even dumber now. It already did because nobody remembers AotC as ‘oh yeah that’s when the clone wars started right?’ Or thinks of TCW as ‘right, what happened in the 2002 film’. Now that I think about it, the Clone Wars were actually introduced back in 1977 when Luke asks Obi-Wan about it. So what exactly is being celebrated? It’s not the first introduction, nor the titular series or even the real anniversary of the first on-screen appearance of the clones (which already would be a massive stretch as that geonosis battle can barely be considered a ‘clone war’).

Okay maybe it’s time I got off the internet for a bit now.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I normally don't get the helmet sets as I think most of them look terrible (though I think I'll be sorry in the future for missing out on the Scout Trooper) but these look really great to me, if imperfect. I quite like the characters and the colors so I may pick these up.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I so not want these it is not even funny. The boushh helmet is kinda neat though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Man, I really wish Captain Rex's chin came a little farther forward. From the side, it looks smashed in.

I thought for sure Captain Rex would be my first helmet set when I heard the leaks, but now I'm not so sure... :(

Lemme geuss. @CapnRex101 is going to be buying... The commander cody helmet.

just kidding

Same technique as on the stormtrooper helmet. A case could be made for updating the design since this is a few years newer, but I'm okay with the uniformity if it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really think these helmets look great but unfortunately I'm not going to buy them because the cost of $70 a piece would buy me 7 501st BPs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think they look great, but I'd rather spend my money on minifig-scale sets.
I bought the Boba Fett helmet on sale and was given the Stormtrooper. I might build these from my pieces- the stickers are unimportant.

If these sell well I could envision LEGO releasing a generic clone helmet with several extra elements that allow for customization. I feel like this is more likely than releasing another helmet from a specific clone.

Both helmets look awesome! These are the first from the helmets series that I'm considering to buy.

Yes, they missed a really opportunity to be innovative and include extra pieces so that both helmets could be rebuilt in the alternative phase.

Overall, look good though.

It's hilarious that this blurb spins deeper out of control by mentioning AotC, when the anniversary is actually 20 years since the 2D-animated Clone Wars micro series, but yeah either way it's marketing nonsense. Nothing they're doing to mark the anniversary stems from that 2D show anyway.

When it comes to marketing and comments to fan media, the Star Wars team has complete disregard for any attention to detail.

That said, the products themselves don't suffer for it. These helmets look cool and it's nice to see Prequel era stuff get some recognition and love.

Gravatar

Wow a lack of comments moaning about how expensive Lego sets are!

The sets look as you would expect, but I don't know who these characters are.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Why is Cody with a Phase 1 helmet?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

They look quite good.....except for the stickers that already look terrible in these official images. Seriously, how hard can it be to make better matching colors? Or if they really are incapable of doing better, please stick to clear backed stickers.

CapnRex looks particularly sticker heavy, so maybe it would be too much to ask for all prints here (although some for those diagonal lines would have been nice). But looking at Cody, there appears to be only a single sticker on the front, would only a print for that be unreasonable?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I definitely like the Cody helmet better than any of the others I've seen in this collection so far; that said, it still doesn't especially tempt me. I do like that some of the 'adult-targetted' sets are available at < £100 price points, but...

If I was going to spend £60 on Lego, I'd still rather get something a little less static than a helmet to display.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Interesting that both helmets are strictly Clone Wars material!
I suppose we're reaching the start of the era where the folks who grew up on CW actually have money? If so, I'm looking forward to seeing more products from it!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The two clone helmets look quite good, and I shall doubtless buy them as I have all the others in the series, but I'm not excited by them. The Boushh helmet is quite another matter though. Despite being one of the first rumours no pictures have leaked which is very surprising (although it does lend weight to the theory that LEGO themselves are behind many of the "leaks"). Probably because it relates to the original trilogy but Boushh is easily my favourite.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I understand why they chose Rex to be P2, but it feels weird to have Cody be P1. I don't any helmet sets, but if I were to buy one, Cody would absolutely be my first. Then I would see how to mod him into Rex. I'm looking forward to the customs. As to the price...ouch. It's nice to see them branch out more though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@bnic99:
Buy two of each, and it should just be a few color swaps to convert them. You might not get all the necessary parts in each set, but blue and orange shouldn’t be that hard to source. Sticker sheets are also an easy swap if you have both.

70€ each? Ahahahahah no.

These are worth, at most, 50€. Definitely gonna skip them unless I find them with a massive discount that brings these down to a fair price for what they are.

Yesterday I had a coworker come up and say he knew I was into LEGO stuff, and then wanted to know if these were real. Oddly, he doesn’t care about the prequels at all (even though he’s the right age), but it’s the animated series that he wants them for.

Then I would highly recommend the 08 Clone Wars series, the later seasons are some of the best star wars TV content there is,
(TV as in not books/games, because then 1991 Thrawn Trilogy/Kotor)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really wish that the Clone Wars 20th Anniversary was actually about the original Clone Wars multimedia project since it gets underplayed so much these days. We could really go for an official, not-sold-by-exploitative-market-manipulators play-scale Muunilinst 10 gunship, a UCS Azure Angel, or a set based on the Battle of Hypori, Defense of Dantooine, or Ambust at Ilum, which wouldn't be too much of a stretch since all three events have canon equivalents established in modern external media. Clone Wars 08 should get celebrated too, but it shouldn't monopolize this specific anniversary.

Hopefully someone will come up with instructions and an extra part list for a Phase 1 Rex alternate build of the retail Phase 2 model.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Feeling like they should have switched the Phases for each other. That would align with Rex being introduced as a Phase 1 clone and Codys introduction in ROTS with Phase 2 helmet. That's what most fans picture in their mind when thinking of those characters, right?
I want to know why there has been no Phase 1 Rex in all Star Wars merchandise since the cancellation of a Hasbro Phase 1 Rex Vintage Collection figure around 2013. It's honestly like they banned him along with Oola and Slave Leia. Not to ruin anyones fun when the overdue Phase 2 Rex with rangefinder minifig finally releases but he was the poster child of the 2008 show and the Phase 2 Rex everywhere reeks of recency bias when there could easily Rex figures of both phases available.

They could have also made a Phase 1 helmet set and a Phase 2 set and included pieces for Shiny, Rex and Cody in both, maybe even a few more legions and commanders. Would have even enabled them to charge more per set with all those fluff pieces, I know how they love doing that for every set whose entire selling point is one or two minifigures.

Rex is UP THERE with my favourite Star Wars characters. I have never got a helmet collection set before, but Rex may be the reason I start!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I cannot wait for these to be released.
Read on a few places that it would have been nice to include the parts to transform the characters to different clone phases. An interesting idea. I wonder if Lego considered that at any point.

as soon as I saw that was for the '20 years of the Clone Wars' I literally Laughed Out Loud. Star Wars the Clone Wars (which was release in 2028) is a completely ("completely" might be a bit of a over reaction) differed show than Star Wars Clone Wars (which was release in 2003). In the 2003 show there were no p2 Clones, or even a Captain Rex.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

They’ve done well with Cody, but Rex seems a bit flat. He might be the better character, but Phase I seems more suited at this scale.

Maybe they should’ve done Rex akin To 76215

Yeah, I've not been a fan of the helmet sets to date (the Boushh one is tempting, though), but the marketing copy provided for these clone helmets is really egregious and really dashes any hope of this "anniversary" highlighting scenes and characters from the OG "Star Wars: Clone Wars" show that did premiere 20 years ago. I guess I'll treasure my Anakin's Custom Jedi Starfighter from 2015 all the more.

For those dinosaurs of prequel-era Star Wars fandom like myself, the timeline goes a little like this.
May 2002 - Episode II: Attack of the Clones premieres. The "Clone Wars" ostensibly begin! In other media (the comic books, in particular), publications begin to release with the "Clone Wars" branding.
2003 - Full launch of "Clone Wars" comics, novels, and tie-ins with the Cartoon Network shorts series, "Star Wars: Clone Wars". I remember the series beginning in November and running the first 10 chapters (up to Anakin engaging Asajj Ventress's starfighter over Muunilist). Of particular note in this time period is that while the multimedia campaign for "Clone Wars" covers toys, LEGO produces a sparse amount of sets related to the Clone Wars, and even these are really from Attack of the Clones, not the comics, novels, or cartoon series.
2004 - Comics and novels continue; General Grevious is introduced in the last chapter of "Clone Wars" in April 2004 during the Battle of Hypori.
2005 - Revenge of the Sith premieres in May. The comics and novels wrap up the "Clone Wars" campaign. In April 2005, the final batch of "Clone Wars" shorts are released, although these are longer (12 minutes) than the ones from 2003 and 2004.
2006 - With the saga "complete", Lucasfilm turns to the "Dark Times", the Knights of the Old Republic, and beyond in multimedia publishing. LEGO still trundles along with a few more sets related to Revenge of the Sith in addition to mainline OT sets.
2007 - Not really a good time to be a fan of the Clone Wars. It is seemingly forgotten, even though Lucasfilm Animation has been hard at work for a couple of years on a new CGI show titled "The Clone Wars".
2008 - Well before the movie "The Clone Wars" premieres in August, LEGO releases a new set featuring a hitherto-unseen Jedi Starfighter for Anakin Skywalker. A hideous visage marrs the minifigure's face, a sign of horrible things to come. Full launch of "The Clone Wars" sets arrives in the summer. And we're off to the races!

So you see, it is correct to say this is the 20th anniversary of a "Clone Wars" multimedia project. But in the pursuit of the almighty dollar and the short memories (due to young age) of the fans, LEGO seems fine with just presenting the Clone Wars as this thing that only got on people's radar in 2008. Whatever. A small part of me will continue to hope and pray an Obi-Wan in clone armor on speeder bikes dueling IG-lancer droids somehow materializes.

@The_Sly_Fox:
I think converting either of these helmets to a different Phase would require such a ground-up rebuild as to be prohibitively expensive. Just looking at the two helmets, you’d need as much as 50% of one set to allow the other set to be converted. Much easier would be color packs that allow you to turn Rex into Cody or vise versa. Or a white color pack that lets you make a generic helmet. I already have my own recolor in mind for one of these helmets.

@Lego_Lord_Mayorca:
I remember being excited about the first Clone Wars series, until I realized I couldn’t set my DVR to record them. I think I had to wait for the two DVD releases to actually finally watch any of this. And regarding 2008, I remember there was a massive digital countdown clock at TRU that let you know precisely when SW:CW merch was allowed to be sold, which included the Twilight. And the “movie” was a last-minute thing. All they did was stitch together four related episodes that were already complete and ready for broadcast. What I heard at the time was that it was a late request from Lucas himself, so not something that was planned at the start.

Gravatar

Tricky part with swapping Rex to some other P2 clone would be giving him standard P2 eyes. I'm sure someone can do it, though

Yeah, what an absolute joke of an "anniversary celebration". It would be like doing an anniversary for the OT and only releasing sets of the added CGI creatures from the Special Editions. This is not what the Clone Wars looked like 20 years ago-- 20 years ago, it was something actually worth celebrating.
