Result: Which classic set should be re-imagined for a gift-with-purchase?

Posted by ,

LEGO has produced updated versions of several popular past sets as promotional items recently, representing Castle, Space and BIONICLE.

There is obvious potential to release many more and numerous options were nominated, twelve of which advanced to our poll last week! More than 4500 votes were submitted and we are now ready to announce the winner...

Winner: 6265 Sabre Island - 814 votes

6265-1

  1. 6265 Sabre Island - 814 votes
  2. 6067 Guarded Inn - 774 votes
  3. 6755 Sheriff's Lock-Up - 519 votes
  4. 6350 Pizza To Go - 423 votes
  5. 5938 Oasis Ambush - 378 votes
  6. 6923 Particle Ioniser - 349 votes
  7. 6898 Ice-Sat V - 329 votes
  8. 6034 Black Monarch's Ghost - 247 votes
  9. 6594 Gas Transit - 243 votes
  10. 4940 The Granite Grinder - 207 votes
  11. 6155 Deep Sea Predator - 182 votes
  12. 6410 Cabana Beach - 149 votes

When considering historic LEGO themes, Space, Castle and Pirates instantly come to mind, so 6265 Sabre Island taking first place is not wholly surprising! While the baseplate would probably be missing from a modern recreation of this set, I expect the transition would otherwise be quite smooth, doubtless maintaining the colours associated with the Imperial Soldiers' buildings.

Additionally, I am pleased to see representatives from six different themes occupying the top six places, rather than one or two themes dominating the poll. I think any could be modernised with relatively few compromises and all would be deserving of such treatment.

Are you surprised by these results? Let us know in the comments.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the Sheriff's lockup ended so high on the list. Almost all of them are neat choices though.

By in Serbia,

Are there new features? No comments on this, but I have a countdown till time out?

Wow...

No one cares for these polls... they should be a great free insight, but hey are not used...

6350 Pizza To Go is peak classic Lego and would fit nicely within a normal Lego city. I prefer real life builds than historic

This is a deserving winner. However, I didn’t pick it because I felt that 70412 from 2015 filled that niche.

I wholeheartedly agree. Pirates had the best line of the 2010s vs other classic themes like Castle and Space. It was a few years too early though! Castle definitely got snubbed with Nexo Knights and Space got the shortest end of the stick with Galaxy Squad and Alien Conquest, all fun themes and sets but they did not capture the classic feel or aesthetic.

By in Canada,

I would most likely do whatever it takes (meeting threshold - with some limits of course if it gets ridiculous) to get about 9 of these 're-imagined' sets.

I was able to put together a 'fairly decent' Sabre Island on Stud I.O. in next to no time with existing parts only (2 parts were not 'currently' available in the required colours).

But apparently Brickset population is not representative of the population at large so I guess this 'research' does not help much - regrettably...

Hopefully LEGO will hear our Sabre rattling.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The top 6 sets surely indicate what themes we'd like for LEGO to continue/return to. And, yes, I did vote for Sabre Island.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Considering the renewed interest in Castle from 10305 and 40567, I could see the Guarded Inn being a gift with purchase.

Not to mention that the Bricklink Castle was sold out (double the allocated amount) in a few hours.
Castle is not my theme but anyone with a pulse can see that there is a huge (if not persistent) demand for that theme. While I don't build in that realm, I really enjoy seeing others' creations.

By in Netherlands,

Wow, for once a list I can mostly agree with....the top-5 exactly matches my personal top 5, and the other ones aren't that far off either.

Hop Lego listens, please (re)make these sets and not as GWP!

Gravatar
By in United States,

woo hoo, almost 150 votes for Paradisa!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

41705 : Heartlake City Pizzeria is probably the best current alternative to a pizza to go, similar sized building at least.

Yes it's Friends, but minidolls don't mean those sets cannot be used with minifigs, or vice versa.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Poor select of chooses results in poor an outcome. Clearly no strong front winner. If you want a Pirate themed set to be next re-imagined GWP set then it needs to have pirates in it, not something other than pirates.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ha! On the plus side of “tied for last place”! Take that, Paradisa!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Wait there was a poll last week?

Well, it doesn't matter. Lego is apparently so poor and those sets so impossible to just sell like any other normal sets that they can barely allow themselves to sell small sets celebrating their own history as GWPs. That was only a few times. So I wouldn't hold my breath for more to come.

In fact, I don't want them to. If they're so unsellable and bad for their profit margins then I'd rather they just stick to their guns. Don't produce wonderful affordable-sized things only to make them only available for those with a lot of cash to use in that limited time anyway.

Or if they do, at least give a head start and just give a yearly overview like they used to.

41379-1 is one of the best restaurant ever made (outside modulars). You can take this and put it in a city layout without any alteration - except for the figs. I always thought this set was too expensive in Canada for what you get - unsurprisingly, you can now get it on Bricklink for cheaper that the MRSP from Lego at the time.

Comparable or better than 6376/10037 imo.

By in United States,

I love the baseplates that had multiple colors. They were so cool.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Cabana beach was my vote, I love the pastel colors and the sunset aesthetic. Paradisa has never really had anything else quite like it since.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted for Sabre Island, even though it wasn't my _favorite_ set of the bunch, because it complements the last two GWPs nicely. Also, I really need more Imperials to face off against our several pirate factions, and unfortunately my dark ages ended right after the last wave of pirate sets left the shelves.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would be surprised if they offered the Guarded Inn. It would be interesting to see if they re-produced the molded piece or used red and black bricks to recreate the inn. I would love a western set. It would be great to have more cowboys.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have ten of the twelve sets (though my Guarded Inn is the 2000 rerelease).
I'd be happy with any of these, whether as GWP or regular set.
Sabre Island's printed baseplate could be easily replicated with a blue 16x16 plate with tan and green plates, perhaps with the outer row of tan being tiles to represent the smooth sand at water's edge. The 2x5x6 wall panels could be brick-built, with a few dark red 1x2 masonry bricks here and there.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I did not vote for the guarded inn because I'm sure they will make a real set similar to the Lion Knights Castle for it in a few years.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I approve of the top 4. Considering we had Castle and Space, Town and Pirates are up for reboots.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I still think you missed a lot of classic historic themes like Fabuland, Trains, Duplo and Technic for instance.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oasis Ambush middle of the pack?
This gotta' be re-made to compliment the new Indy sets coming out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh, and LEGO, make sure we all get some ViP points for this marketing we participated in ;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I somehow missed this poll, but my vote would have gone to my first-ever Lego set, 6034 Black Monarch's Ghost!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’d pick up either of the top two. Castle and Pirates had a surprising amount (100%) of space parts.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

I'd love either Sabre or Guarded; I have the former and have made my own version of the latter, but anything that gives us modular castle walls and stuff that can be reconfigured into other buildings is fine by me.

I do love the rebooted Forestmen GWP, would love to see how they do an Inn or Island.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Glad that Western made it so high on the list. I had hoped Oasis ambush would be higher. And I'm a little surprised Granite Grinder was above Deep Sea Predator.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’d love any of the top 3. Each from one of the most iconic retired themes.

It seems unlikely LEGO would do a Town tribute as the theme was simply renamed City in 2005 so it was never really retired.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

As a vintage pirate fan, I'd be very enthused for a modern remake of Sabre Island similar to how the Forestmen GWP was done. It's not too big for a GWP and can be done using modern pieces.

FWIW there are multiple "modern" Sabre Island MOCs on Rebrickable. MOC-137879 looks pretty faithful to the original while using modern parts (apart from the old figures), while MOC-71657 takes the concept to another level. Was thinking of building both to accompany my original Sabre Island kit.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’m surprised at the comment that one of two themes could have dominated as every option was from a different theme. Perhaps one could argue two are from Castle and two from Space, although neither space-related is from true Classic Space. If there had been I imagine that would have been in the top three.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Cabana Beach was last! What is this evil witchcraft?! :/

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really wouldn’t be disappointed with any set from before 1998-ish. Even themes that didn’t really excite me back then; I have really enjoyed these remakes.

Ah…no. I think my Routemaster bus is bigger than that. My LEGO Store fills two baseplates, plus anywhere from 2-6 baseplates for parking.

Gravatar
By in United States,

And the one I voted for ( 6898 ) is square in the middle. That said, I wouldn't at all mind a re-imagining of 6265 , as I am a Pirates fan. Bigger space fan though, which is why I voted as I did, as well as the fact that I didn't have the original. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing how they'd re-imagine any of these, considering how many retired parts there are among them. I'd especially like to see how they'd do the drill in 4940 and the arms in 6155 . I'd like to see a re-imagined 6034 both to see how they'd do the doors, and because I want one of the newer ghost pieces.

@PurpleDave said:
"Ha! On the plus side of “tied for last place”! Take that, Paradisa!"

And now I'm picturing the Aquasharks surfacing just off of Paradisa's beach and wreaking havoc...

@Chadbello: Considerind 40567 used current pieces and 40580 didn't even bother to mold and existing piece in a unused-for-years color, I think they'd stick to the current parts palette.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just about all of them would be great choices. Classics that have stood the test of time. I'm partial to the Space ones of course, but both Space and Castle (and Pirates, somewhat) have gotten a lot of love these past few years. Throw one to the town/adventurer/other crowd, they deserve some love.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

I'm leaning towards Castle and Space themed sets when it comes to reimagined sets. Because reimagined Town sets will look like modern City sets and I don't think it will have the same affect.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

No offense, but I prefer re-released sets to re-imagined sets.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Nice to see Western theme get some love & make it into the top 3. Be nice to see something different.

But how much more would you be willing to pay overall for the old moulds that need to be created for the now long retired parts, even though the sets would be very similar?

I enjoyed the recent modern GWP based on old sets. I went for Sabre Island, simply because Castle and Space have both been done as GWP so if another one was made, Pirates makes sense.

They probably would be cheaper than the sets for sale in Bricklink.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Lego_lord: I tend to agree. Maybe something like 6355, that City hasn't done much of (Not that Town did much, either: there are only ten Town sets tagged "Hose." Although that's more than City: it only has four, and two of those are horse trailers!)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m in the minority, I suppose, as I have zero interest in the top 4. They would not drive me to spend (2x mind you) the threshold that I did, to obtain two of the Blacktron GWP. Top 5-7, are of interest, however. =)

We need a Ginny lego set!

3 of those are also from 2022 and 2023 (2 horses and 1 foal), and City and Friends have been synchronizing subthemes more and more, so perhaps more horses are on the way for City.

Yes, it was weird, but wasn't it cool? I also loved the robot storage under the wing, the crane arm, and the storage container that was more than the standard box-with-magnet.

By in Belarus,

remasters of classic sets is a big field to play on. I (brickverse) may model line of MOCs and show it to you at my flickr. What is good about it all is that it is relatively not effort-consuming, to remodel sets, so it may come out fast in big numbers. I already know, for instance, how my remaster of Model Team famous red-white truck with plane set will come out. It's now only to sit and model what's in thoughts is already clear, in stud io. So, I'm thankful that this trend arised and gave me idea to rework some of classic sets that I used to play with in my childhood. Leg godt is about saving traditions, remembering classic approaches and reviving them from time to time. Also, in face of harsh reality we currently find ourselves in, connected with all horrible things I rather not name - it is valuable and important that we still have much in common, all ppl from around the world. And one from these uniting things is our childhood, we all played with bricks. We all played well with Lego. Some of us, which why we are here at brickset typing comments and reading articles =) - some of us still enjoy building with Lego bricks. As I do, and you, many, and, hopefully, majority of visitors of this wonderful web-site.
P.S. I hope Pete Dornbach, Frantisek Hajdekr, fellow MOCers will also join in and we will see their remasters of some classic sets. I'd like to hear from them about this too. May be Blackert and Savelsberg too will find time.
P.P.S. Just realised I also have a clear idea to remodel classic Technic 8042 set, blue with pneumatics 4 in 1 set. It used to be my favorite Technic set, bought to me by father at birthday, when I became 6 years old and was already into Lego for 2 years.

So that explains the change of Friends

41708: Roller Disco Arcade was the secret hideout of Friends-Tron and somehow a dimensional time shift happened.

More evidence of Friends-tron can be found in the pink room in 41704: Main Street Building , where a standard issue Blacktron-2 Lamp was found in white/black and neon green.

I absolutely would have voted for that."

Hilarious!
