Awww, what a cute little planet killer!

Definitely a downgrade from last years May the 4th promo. It's not bad but it really should've had a minifigure included.

Why oh why is the stem piece for the superlaser not trans-neon green... you couldn't have put at least one exclusive piece in the set? I wish LEGO gave us more to be excited about on May 4th.

Looks good to me, and should be relatively easy to convert into the original Death Star if you wanted to.

I'd guess a spend threhold in the region of £160-175 given the piece count.

Gravatar
By in United States,

How much time do you want to bet before someone makes a DS I or Starkiller base using this as a blueprint?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Needless comment:

I want some Lego Star Wars High Republic sets. Not just the 4+ set. I mean adaptations of the books.

The franchise has been around for over two years and is projected for another two, so strike while the iron is hot.

An ant would be about the size of a Star Destroyer at this scale.

I like it. After all, I’ll never be able to afford the UCS Death Star… and I am 100% fine with no minifigure. I really don’t see a need for it here.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Looks pretty good, but definetely a step down from last year’s (which IMHO is the best May 4th promo they’ve released). Maybe include a stand with Moff Jerrjerod?

By in United States,

I agree that this is a downgrade from last years excellent Vignette with the exclusive Aunt Beru minifig. This looks allright, but they could and should have included an exclusive minifig with this, like Moff Jerjerrod or an Imperial Dignitary. Will have to see what the spend threshold is for this, if it is too high I will probably pass. The only sets I am interested in purchasing this May the 4th are the Mandalorian Fang Fighter VS Tie Interceptor (can't wait for the Tie Interceptor!!!) and the midscale Executor, so if the spend threshold is above those I'm out. The rest of the sets coming out are pretty lackluster and ludicrously overpriced.

By in United States,

That's no moon. It's a thermal detonator!

@LJ_McGowan:
Flower stems are made in polyethylene because the slender stems would be (much, much more) prone to breaking, otherwise. It appears the main beam is trans-bright-green, in which case regular bright green would have been a better choice for both the flower stem and the lime(?)(seriously -> ???) Apollo stud. What's worse is they've already made the Apollo stud in at least two transparent colors.

@Wasthereonce:
I've got three. I'm good.

Gravatar

It’ll go perfectly with my Millennium Falcon 1x1 round tile in grey.

Brilliantly played……I think I see a freak gasoline fight on the main flight deck.

If this was a standalone set I'd buy it in a heartbeat. As a GWP... eh not too fussed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

When are they going to reveal the TIE Interceptor. It’s already been sold and reviewed, & the show’s over now, so it would be a good time to give official images.

Coin yesterday, Thermal Detonator II today... These things take time, and apparently time is measured in days. They're trying to build up anticipation, so expect announcements to come at a steady pace until they've run out.

I'm not convinced that Lego could mold a piece in transparent plastic with those very thin stems and have it not break easily. Plus molding a piece in a new color is much more difficult that printing one.

This is amusing to me considering that I was planning to get 75356 for the May the Fourth promotion. Talk about out of scale with each other!

Expected to be $150 so no higher than last year.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

I love the packaging

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I prefer this to last year's one. Yes it contained a Beru figure and has a little sideways building but I found it quite a boring build. Whereas this one looks like you need to look at the instructions while building.

Gravatar
By in United States,

From the way this is designed, it looks like they expect some people would want to convert this model to be the Death Star I and that's a really nice touch!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looking forward to next year's GWP where they include a minifig and get accused of only doing it to bump up the spend threshold. The minifig will either be of an obscure character, in which case it's boring and lazy, or a popular one, in which case it's greedy and should have just been available for purchase. If it is then made available for purchase, it is too expensive or else not expensive enough and so didn't do the model justice. And should have included Darth Revan. Or possibly someone from the Legend of Zelda. And it should be free. But not free like this where it's free but you have to buy something, but free free where they just give it to you for no reason. But not free free free because then scalpers will take it all. So just free to me. No one else.

Why doesn't TLG value me as a customer? Also TLG is evil.

In all seriousness, I really love this set. Probably my favourite GWP they've done. Will look great on my desk.

On a human-scale, or even an ant-scale, the size of atoms is beyond comprehension, but this much-quoted saying might help: there are more molecules of water in a glass of water than there are [the volume of] glasses of water in all the oceans of the world.

This little model is made up of billions of billions of atoms; it's a heck of a part-count!

I haven't done the maths, but this is possibly a Death Star for bacteria.

(Also: just put the sets & coins & whatever on sale, LEGO; artificial scarcity is a crock of bum-mud.)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Super excited for this set, I never had a chance at the UCS Death Star 2 so this will be a perfect alternative.

I'm curious about the superlaser, it seems to be a trans-green bar in a trans green cone. I thought this was an illegal build technique, since the two polycarbonate parts generate so much friction they are hard to pull apart afterwards?

I think (and please correct me if I'm wrong) that this is a consequence of the new transparent plastic they've been using for a while. It's cloudy and scratches easily, but it does permit this technique... Personally I don't think the trade-off was worth it, but there were some upsides.

It's alright, but I don't think having the photo of the Death Star II on the back does it any favours whatsoever.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall of Lego Product Development meetings when they decide on what is going to be the May the 4th promotion. When was this idea pitched as this year's promotion, and what other ideas were out there? Is next year's already decided?

For that matter, how does Lego decide what Star Wars sets they will be releasing? I know they have fixed price points they need to fill, but sometimes ideas come right out of left field. This year's, as the ROTJ 40th Anniversary, i get the DSII. Last year, Beru's kitchen, where did that come from?

Gravatar

Or they just don’t want to spend extra money and want to do a new set with less effort. I mean who cares what the color is. People will buy it anyway.

It was a tie-in with the Landspeeder that Luke Skywalker uses to travel from the home he shares with his aunt and uncle.

By in United States,

For some years now I've celebrated May 4th by buying and building a Star Wars set, sometimes big, sometimes small. This year I see being no different. Not sure I'll necessarily make the spend threshold for this GWP and I'm fine with that. I might buy it if it were for sale directly, it is nifty. And if I miss it (and decide I want it), there will be a legion of sellers or maybe I can trade someone something for it at a con.

@NathanR2015:
It probably was, for a time. I believe it was around the time they switched from extruded to injection-molded that they changed the blade material to a much more expensive plastic that didn't have this problem. While it was a simple thing to ban the practice in official sets, it was an unreasonable expectation that consumers would never do so themselves.

@MisterBrickster:
I'm not deeply versed on all the different plastics they've been using, but I don't believe the plastic they'd been using for 4L bars in recent years is the same plastic they've now switched to for everything.

@Ridgeheart:
I doubt they would have molded it in TNG, even if it wasn't being retired. It's a PE part for a reason, and transparent plastic just isn't going to be flexible enough to keep the part from breaking, probably even inside of the sealed box. Still, they could have done a much better job with the colors used. For one thing, there's a lime Apollo stud. They've molded that same piece in trans-orange and trans-light-blue, so why not trans-bright-green? The flower stem could have been molded in bright-green, which would be a better match for TBG.

@Talint:
2022 was the 45th anniversary of the original SW film, so stuff focused a bit more on that film. This year is the 40th of RotJ. Next year I guess they could do something for Ep1's 25th (yes, it's that old), and the year following will be the 45th for Empire (and 20th for Ep3). 2026 will be a gap year, and then it wraps around to the 50th for ANH (and 25th for Ep2).

Anyways, they've done tons of stuff for Ep4, which doesn't leave a lot of prominint stuff to do to commemorate these milestones. Beru was a big deal because Shmi is probably the only female character with more screen time who still doesn't have a minifig. They'd done Owen twice, at this point. He's easy to work into a Sandcrawler set, which is where both of his minifigs have appeared. Beru? Not so much. Literally the only time we see her outside of the Lars home or adjoining courtyard is when she's a burnt skeleton. The Lars home, however, sits mostly underground, is quite large (compared to Obi-Wan's hut), and doesn't see any on-screen action.

I'm not aware of this being an issue with MABS like it was with Polycarbonate. Anyways, I'm still hoping for the Apollo stud in clear. I have a bag full of the 4-petal flower in clear, but while it's useful for some things, the lack of a fully hollow stud limits its usefulness. Instead, I've mostly ended up using them in weird ways, like jellyfish tendrils.

So a lot of people are saying pass, but I hope it still is available since finally there is something I will want as a freebie. Granted, I am worried about price point. But I suppose I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Thankfully it looks simple enough I could just build it if I can't afford it since I don't need the printed brick underneath.

Promo runs May 1-7, so if they’re already out, they’ve got a serious problem in their hands. GWPs have had their target threshold raised in the past few years, which definitely isn’t popular with this crowd, but it has helped slow down the pace at which they’re handed out. Where in the past, it was always a good idea to wait up until the minute the promo went live and get your order in ASAP, they no longer tend to be sold out of GWPs by the time people start waking up the next morning. I’d still suggest not tempting fate, and place your order earlier rather than later, but that’s as much about them not running out of sets you’d buy to qualify for the GWPs as it is for the actual GWPs themselves.

Gravatar
